Alexandra and Erik Play the best Opening Hole in Golf │ Scotland Diaries Episode 3

- In episode three of the Scotland Diaries, Erik and Alexandra head south to play Machrihanish Golf Club. Not to be confused with Machrihanish Dunes, this course was designed by Charles Hunter in 1876. Although it was originally constructed as a twelve hole track, Old Tom Morris expanded the Club three years later to a full eighteen holes. Morris’ expansion of the course is highlighted by the first hole, which is often known as the best opening hole in the world. Upon arrival, Erik and Alexandra are greeted by Club Captain, William Ross. Ross, who has been at the club for almost 40 years, offers up a challenge aimed at making the famous first hole even more interesting. Tune in as Erik and Alexandra duel it out on the links, battling both the course layout and the wind throughout their round.

So many golf vlogs are: here I am, here's my distance, here's my club, etc...which I like! But this is a love story. The reverence paid to these old courses, and the game of golf, is just such a pleasure to watch. Wonderful work.
One of the reasons I have been playing more golf in the lock down is finding this channel and adventures in golf. I just want to play this stunning courses. EAL you showcase these landscapes amazingly well.

I think Scotland likes you Erik as the weather is generally very kind to you ! Yes it was windy but most of the time you get it dry ! A former work colleague told me about Arran and now I can add these to that trip. Another beautiful place you've visited and sold to me !

Loved Mach old. Played it in violent winds but what fun hitting 4 irons just over 100 yards. We drove from Glasgow and as T.S Eliot put it, the journey, not the destination matters.....what a journey but what a destination. Great vid. 👍

Thoroughly enjoying these Scotland videos! The whole country is a bucket list item for me. Machrihanish is the golf course that probably ranks top of the list for Scottish golf. St. Andrew's of course, but getting on is a punt and it's probably crowded. I really want to get a good sense of the history of the game and rural golf is such a big part of it. Eagerly looking forward to the next one - thanks!

Living in Scotland, I have had the pleasure of going for a two and a half hour drive round to play both Machrihanish and Machrihanish Dunes (on different occasions). I loved them both, although I do have to say that I think that the older course is the better of the two.

Did you play all the holes? The 5th , the 8th , the 10th, the 12th and the devilish 15th are just so much fun. The wind makes the 4th quite a challenge - it can alternate between a 6 iron and a lop-wedge. This course just plays in a thousand different ways subject to what the Atlantic weather generator decides to throw at you. Go and enjoy the challenge

Stunning places, amazing protagonists. Always enjoy your videos! And I love Scotland, unfortunately have to delay my next whisky and golfing stay until calmer times. The Machrie on Islay is on my bucket list, and these are on it now, too.

I'm so happy that you played and enjoyed these wonderful courses in such a beautiful, if slightly inaccessible, part of Scotland. I see that you are playing Dunaverty too next time - a quirky one-off gem with stunning views and one of my favourite places to play golf anywhere.
Makes me want to go back. Played Mac Dunes and Old Mac back to back in the same day and had a blast. Definitely not super easy to get to but totally worth it. I’d recommend hitting Shiskine On the way there or back if you have time.
Awesome place. Well worth the trip along the long and winding road. Play Shishkine on the way there. You won’t regret it.

Probably the horrible audio balance.
Great content but the differences in audio between the clips and music is hard to sit through.

Would love to play a round with you sometime (I beg everyone, even old TC too 🤣) but probably never gonna happen. BTW as you seem to carry your clubs all the time, what’s in the bag? I just don't understand how you get all these aerial shots without other players on the course. Are you reserving the entire place to yourself or is it that dead over there in the UK?
I have the same questions lol. Because sometimes when I play golf I see drones up ahead but I never see a course without anyone because if there aren’t players, there’s most likely going to be maintenance workers
To be honest, both golf clubs should be honored to be mixed up with eachother. Fantastic courses both.

I would say that Portstewart in Northern Ireland (between Castlerock and Portrush), has the best opening hole in golf.
When we can actually go visit there against, it will be so much sweeter! I can’t wait!

I thought Alexandra played a lot of Irish links? She acts surprised when you hit over a green and also upset about cross winds and blind shots. This is part of the fun.

In fairness, I haven't played Machrihanish, but I have to say that #1 at Sheep Ranch at Bandon Dunes is the best opening hole I've ever seen.

The levels on the audio are all over the place. Overlay music is too loud comparable to the speaking audio. Hard to watch when volume is up and down.
