- Curdle Motif @ Fairmount Park in Riverside, Ca covering Holland 1945 by Neutral Milk Hotel

UPDATE: Hey everyone. Sounds like there is a bug with this video that mutes it when you try to watch it on mobile. If you are a mobile user, try downloading the video, seems to fix the problem for folks in the comments. If you have the option to watch on desktop, that should work no problem. Hope this helps!
Hey everyone, I've had my notifications for this video off pretty much since I uploaded it but just wanted to say thank you to everyone for showering it with such love and praise for the entire time its been up! I was reading through some of these comments, feeling so connected to each of you through this video, I wish I could share more of this experience with you. Y'all are really taking me back to this moment with a greater appreciation for it so I wanted to answer a couple of recurring questions I've seen here too.
The band was called Curdle Motif consisting of the guitarist & cellist: Hassan & Rosie. Not really sure why they stopped playing together but they did not too long after this.
Rosie had that mark under her chin from taking a fall directly onto her face earlier that day at school.
Hassan didn't have a strap because she showed up for this show and forgot his guitar. He borrowed a guitar from my friend that I (half jokingly) suggested play a solo acoustic set from his band on a whim, but he agreed and came to open for Curdle Motif & Kepi Ghoulie.
The drummer is my buddy Armando who helped organize the show, those are not his drums, he was not in the band, nor did he really play drums (at the time).
This was filmed right outside the American Legion at Fairmount Park, hence the tank.
I recently caught up with Hassan at a Mountain Goats show where he thanked me for uploading this video. Seems like the video made its way back to him recently too to make him feel the same type of way we all do here.
Thanks again everyone, I hope I've answered most of your questions here!
Much love
🙏
Just wanted to say thank you, this video has brought much joy to me every time I've watched it. Stay safe stranger.
This is my favorite video to ever come out of Riverside, CA. Thank you forever
thanks for an update. I come back to this video once every year and this was a pleasant update to say the least.

Everything about this video is just fantastic; the couple in the background, the awkward exchange between the nerd dude and the girl sharing a cig, the literal fucking tank. And not to mention the absolute pinnacle of teenage friendship and a hell of a good time in the performance. Youth, man.
And then you grow up
wish I was able to experience this...
Yeah, this was fantastic. Watching them in the background was like a scene in a movie
i agree sans.
my self awareness scale went up to 100 seeing the kid play the guitar. he reminds me of me
pretty wack
the folksy impromptu-looking performance on the bank of a river. the whole audience singing along. the nerd shyly sharing a joint with a girl. the couple joking around in the background. the cute chick with bangs gently playing the cello. the snapback caps tilted to the side. the stoned guy in the hoodie quietly nodding his head to the beat. the kid on guitar singing and strumming out an indie banger like his life depends on it.
this video is the best memory you have of the 2000's that you never had.
Don't forget the tank!!! :D
well when you put it like that...

This is probably the most wholesome video I've found on this website. Which is funny given its simplicity. Just friends playing a song. It harkens back to a time where we where on the cusp of growing up, all we had to really worry about was school, and the occasional girl/guy. It makes me long for the same experience, I have a large number of friends but I don't know if they would ever have that same experience with me. This is truly a gem of a video

I've watched this dozens of times and only now just noticed they're playing right beside a tank. Given the content of the music, it's oddly appropriate. Everything about this video just fits into place, you know?
What hits me most is that cute couple in the background that just fit in so well with the song!
Couple in the back. 2 guys sharing a cigarette, bunch of people playing NMH.

I commented on this video a number of years ago, a much sadder versions of myself, longing for the childhood simplicity of this video. I've grown quite a bit, both in age and experience, and have come to realise you don't need to be a kid to experience this. There will be times in your life you'll wish you where in the past, and times you'll be excited for the future. I believe I'm inbetween those times right now, but I know the world is going to keep spinning, and that new and exciting experiences I never thought I'd have are waiting for me as I type this. I hope everyone in this video is doing the best they can, maybe they're still friends, maybe they've gone their separate paths, all I hope is its the best path for them all. And for you, the reader, I hope with all my heart you are doing the best you can, and that you treat the world and its people the way you wish to be treated.
God bless
Signed: a stranger high on nostalgia
thank you

Why can’t I hear the sound this was my favorite
I've watched this video countless times but I'm only now paying attention the way it was shot. I love how this is accidentally so beautifully composed. The performers are close to the camera but far apart from each other, almost like they're a frame in itself and the rest of the scene taking place behind them resembles a stage. This effect is mirrored as the couple right behind are also keeping a distance and standing still enough to create a secondary frame, which is concluded with the third couple at the far end, who are acting out an entire scene of their own. Aside from this, I love how fluid the connection between these couples/frames is. The couple is playing to an audience off-screen, they're not paying any attention to the rest of the people on-screen. Meanwhile, the couple sharing a cigarette are sort of just having a conversation, and the couple in the background is busy having moments of intimacy. That being said, both couples do react to the music played by the main couple, but never as much as everyone else. They sort of exist as these characters in a play/movie and the music not exactly entertains them as it illustrates their existence, and moments in which they react to the music are more like moments in which the music anticipates them. This "tunnel" effect (multiple frames reinforcing the sense of depth) in itself is wonderful. I do also like other details, like how the band facing outwards into the off-screen space is thus invinting an externality to the image, the guy with the cap who disappears off-screen as soon as the song starts and returns just as it ends (the guy going "WAAAH WAHHH" as the camera closes up on him), or the people who walk in and out of screen like drawing our attentions outwards and adorning our idea of what the off-screen audience itself was actually doing. The trees all aligned with the men's heads... Also the fucking tank in the background. Was the tank intentional? That genuinely feels intentional
It's an amazing composition of life itself. It's strange, it's natural, it's random and most of all: it's human.
This video shares the feel of the album itself for me.
this is my favorite cover of this song
I wholeheartedly believe that this is the greatest video on youtube
Haha. There's so much teenage win in this video it's hilarious. Love it!
I don’t think I’ll ever have a genuine human connection but this feels very nice. If I ever get better at being a human I want to do this with people.

been keeping an eye on this comment hoping for an update like this one. i’m so glad you’re doing better. i kinda echo the same sentiments have been having some ups and downs lately, but i feel more alive than i ever had and that has to be worth something
@@eirieldreamsthat's awesome. Even in the hardest of times it's still feels good to be alive so I know what you mean. I was listening to Anne Frank's diary last night outside walking in my small town and it was so surreal thinking about how that all really happened, all her normal teenage feelings despite her circumstances etc. I could really relate to alot of what she said as a teen myself and it's crazy to think that these people existed in the same world that we do because it feels in some ways disconnected from now but all the same very much connected to now and It gave me a very existential like feeling that was very comforting and is very hard to explain and to be honest I love it that way because it's so inspiring and the mystery kinda enhances that. Anyway the fact that she died so early really made me realize how fortunate I am to be alive and well which is something I'm always thankful for but the reinforcement really made me appreciate it that much more in that moment. I'm realizing this sounds like a journal entry of mine lmao. So I'll have to put it in there but there was this one specific passage which although I'm not religious spoke to me in certain parts and I'll put that here later. "The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quite alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. As longs as this exists, and it certainly always will, I know that then there will always be comfort for every sorrow, whatever the circumstances may be. And I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles."
Is it just me or this video has no sound every time I try to watch it?

Since this video, I've looked more into Curdle Motif and their music, as well as both of their other groups that they joined separately. Both of them are such great musicians, and this video shows something that I can't describe but that fills me with a wholesome and calm warmth.
