As The System Alliance expands they find themselves biting off more they can chew in The First Contact War; an unfortunate incident that will go down as the official First contact between humanity and an new alien species.
Join me as I dive into the events that would define The Alliances formative years, as part of the galactic community.

Not even attempting contact with an unknown species just killing them is not a great move.
The reason why it wasn't allowed to open mass relays was because off the rachni incident if I remember my lore correctly. For the Alliance the opening of new relays was a way to learn new tings as that is how they got there in the first place.
Maybe not the smartest move but mostly innocent from the Alliance while the Turians just did go to the kill. I can't blame the Alliance for retaliating after.
Turians can pretend all they want they just can’t resist having a fight!
When researching this video the information on how the conflict began was scarce. This is why I think many would love a First Contact War game.
My theory is the Turian patrol commander was one of these pro aggressive Turians who was just spoiling for an excuse to attack.
I think it could make a good movie. I don't think there would be to many characters from the games so casting wouldn't be to painful.
It wouldn't be good most likely but if it was it could bring more attention to Mass Effect like how the Fallout show did to the Fallout games.
What is the point of having the strongest fleet if you don't use it?
@@TFAric oh yes! It would make a great premise for a movie.
@@MTJDisorder It is not too complicated so it should be possible.
Then an end credit scene of Caville as Shepard as he is the king of the nerds :D
It is much easier to make a film if you have a set point, making one based on the trilogy would be hard, it would have to be a TV series and would be hard as people would complain about Sheps gender and paragon/renegade.
@@MTJDisorder
Like at the incident that started The Earth-Mimbari war.
Shout out to human fighter carrier vessels. Council races only used fighters as scouts or long range interceptors in small numbers to augment cruisers and dreadnoughts. Ww2 on earth demonstrated the vulnerability of "big gun" navies to advances in aviation. Swarms of strike fighters could do a lot of damage at a lot less risk of men and material.
When the alliance counter attacked, swarms of fighters carrying torpedoes launched and overwhelmed turian capital ships. They closed in evaded the weak fighter defenses, and slipped disruptor torpedoes through the shields and hit the shield emitters themselves. Same for engines and the main guns. The ships weren't destroyed but were effectively neutralized and were sitting ducks for alliance vessels.
The tactic stunned the turians and council races and the rushed to quickly adopt fighter and antifighter capabilities.
Yes! One of the reasons casualties remained so low also!
Excellent shout out!
"You're marking the end of the first contact war with a protest!"
Lol forgive me you’ll have to clarify
Is that from pinnacle?
@MTJDisorder its what shepard can say to charles seracino in the wards near the end of ME1
@@user-ew9gk9zj5e omg the Terra Firma guy! How could I forget!
@@MTJDisorder that's the one
I loved how they made humans equally aggressive and militaristic as the resident military race Turians. Most fantasy universes make the humans the boring avg race. No, mass effect makes humans the americans of the universe.
And Humanity's introduction has so, so many more impacts. In a short 26 years between the First Contract Was and the events of the First game, they introduced several new technologies that changed combat, both on the ground and in space. My favorite of which lore-wise is Medi-Gel. It's technically illegal by Council laws against generic engineering (this info comes from the in-game Codex entries), but it's far too useful for military forces, including all Cidatel member and council species, that the council can't order it banned.
Oooh! Thanks for the info. Will have to break that down in part 5. Will be sure to shout you out! 🤗
@@MTJDisorder you're welcome. i spent hours in like 2012 when my parents finally let me play the game just reading and re-reading every single codex entry. Another notable thing off the top of my head is the introduction of the capability to mass launch small one-man pilot spacecraft from dreadnought size ships outfitted with massive hangers instead of big guns, creatively called carriers.
The fact that all contact with Aliens is not just within living memory, but a direct experience of basically anyone the same age as Anderson, is not well presented in series. Its my only major problem with the world building that humans do feel very entrenched for a species only about 30 years into Citadel Space.
The way I always looked at it was that it’s all part of the forced evolutionary design of the reapers.
I think it's well established that some species have a problem with how fast humans got their sea legs in space, and even got on the council
@@nemanja98rs yeah exactly. Who knows how long the reaper process had been gnawing away at making sure humanity rose to the top to become the next reaper.
Combine that with the fact no one even knew the reapers existed probably creates the perfect melting pot for a general resentment.
There are lots of examples on aliens having issues with how fast the humans are growing both in occupied space and political power.
@@JayEm1325 found Din Korlacs burner account 😂 😜
Such a great piece of world building that shows how corrupt and incompetent the council are. At best you could say the Turians assumed it was Batarians that were attempting activate the relay, but even in real life police are required to identify themselves before taking action even when it would be disadvantageous to do so. So the Turians had no excuse for firing first. Not to mention the war crimes they committed and received no backlash for. If humans in ME1 pulled a stunt like this they would’ve received punishment, likely sanctions or even having their embassy closed on the Citadel
Right? And according to Liara it’s us who are perceived as the bullies 😂
There's a suggestion that police identify themselves, They don't have to for every operation. It really depends on the country as well.
Not a good idea to just start a war with an unknown species. Turians were lucky that humans were not far more advanced. The smart move was to open a dialogue explaining why relays cant be activated.
Oh the deal is we actually *were* that advanced; the extended ME lore basically goes like this: the council at the time was getting reports that basically amounted to, once they realized who they were actually dealing with, that humanity by itself could fight all of council space to a draw or a slim victory; and it was basically going to require uplifting the Yahg to stop us from doing so.
In other words: the Turians kicked a hornets nest.
@@Vaprous by far more advance I was thinking more on par with the reapers power. 1 reaper ship would have won that fight without breaking a sweat. 6 would have teabagged the councils entire military forces.
Turians were lucky we've sent the Alliance instead of Helldivers
They coulda used some democracy I agree.
I believe that Turians should have known better than to fire first then to ask questions later, because for they could have known Humanity could have been a major threat to the Citadel Space, and humanity first interactions would have been hostile. Really the Turian should have gotten a really bad reputation by the other citadel species and client races for the Turians being such strict law enforcement officers.
Wow that’s a really good point. It’s like the galactic equivalent of getting in the face of some dude at the bar and it turns out he’s a black belt in Taekwando. 😳
The turians were absolutely in the wrong on this one. There was no attempt at dialogue with unidentified ships from an uncategorised species.
Perhaps that is simply how their culture and military operate. Or perhaps the person in charge of the ships that intercepted the Alliance attempting to open the relay was more trigger happy than most.
While unending curiosity and a thirst for ever more resources and territory are parts of human culture, which is why they kept opening relays. As you said as well, humanity were not aware of the existence of the Citadel species and thus did not know about their laws regarding relay activation.
It would be like going to another country, not realising there are laws regarding how you open doors, and the police shooting you because you opened the door wrong.
But the fact remains, the turians shot first and didn't bother to ask questions until later. They also showed no regard for civilian life, though that may be due to their culture where everyone is part of the military, so they lack such a distinction. I'm also fairly sure that using orbital debris and/or asteroids etc as impact weapons is forbidden or heavily frowned upon by Citadel law.
If that was the case, that means the turians shot first and ignored any other first contact protocol regarding an uncategorised species, they then used illegal weapons against a civilian population as part of terror tactics.
Not sure how anyone can look at this and think the turians weren't entirely or fully to blame.
The Turians being very hostile makes sense if they assumed they were going to be attacked anyway. IRL soldiers when they encounter people they aren't familiar with can open fire as protocol if the other people get too close even if they're just women and children. Break down of communication between species would be enough to open fire, if they were assuming the other side is trying to ram them.
If it exists, it belongs to humanity.
Now I understand Liara's motivation to become a shadow broker, because information is the key to success. If the turians would have tried to communicate with humans before attacking them then it would probably turn out just fine but knowing our human nature, wouldn't we do the same? Unknown is the humanity's biggest fear
Excellent comment!
This video is an account of the accepted truth of how the events unfolded. Which at face value yes clearly shows how a lack of understanding and proper lines of communication resulted in a near catastrophe.
However, when reading some of the spin off comics and books and even some of the in game data-pads there is more than just a suggestion that there was some shady business going on that might have caused this to get out of hand.
It’s funny that though archeology was her profession she didn’t really care about it. Finding out what happened to the Protheans was her true obsession. She almost had a sixth sense for knowing when something didn’t quite add up.
As soon as Liara and the crew of the Normandy unraveled an ancient galactic conspiracy that took over her motivations.
Bioware used to be masters of writing, character & species building, & simply making amazing space opera games.
Then EA barged in, assumed control of Bioware, & it's steadfastly gone to sh!t ever since...
Well, I can see the point of view the Alliance had. I mean the chunk of the galaxy that is Alliance space is almost, I would say 10 % of the galaxy. Imagine the size of that chunk. So naturally they thought "Yeah, the galaxy is mostly empty and devoid of life". The Turians handled the situation wrong. Even if they didn't speak the language, there would have been an opportunity to at least halt the Alliance by trying to talk to them.
Agreed. Super irrational from the Turian patrols perspective.
Second fleet arriving to shanxi:
Frak around and find out!
Oh Frak ya bud! Great comment 😂
I love the attitude of the Alliance, they truly make humanity proud
Great video! I will have to play these games one day. I have the full edition, but its all about time.
Opening fire at an unknown species might be the dumbest thing you could do. So my headcanon goes with an idiotic turian captain dragging both races into a conflict because he couldn't handle his quarian wine.
The Taurean’s messed with America’s ships. There was only one way it was going to go down.
As a TV series first contact war would be such a great story..
Great video by the way 👌🏾
Thank ye kindly! Yeah the consensus seems to be it would make a good series. A lot of potential for side stories with all the stuff , Anderson and TIM get up to during those events.
That video was terrific, thumbs up and subbed.
Thank you very much!
Have to agree with the Turians. It wasn't a war it was just a conflict.
Some would even say it wasn’t a conflict. I’ve always personally understood the Turians angle because it’s true no other species just treated the galaxy like a playground like humanity did. Policing action is a good description. And when it started to get out of hand they did the right thing by getting the council involved.
Excellent comment! 🤗
They attacked unprovoked because of a law we had no possible way of knowing about and invaded our planet. They also didn’t get the council involved. The council realized what was happening after they started gearing up for a full scale war and forced the Turan’s to stop. At no point was their response reasonable or proportional.
@@UncertaintyLaw oh absolutely never suggested it was reasonable just that I get why they don’t see it as a war.
Also when I say “get the council involved” I mean like as though they were Bradley cooper in the hangover.
They f**ked up 😂
Awesome video. Great job!
Thank you so much!

wait, those wre all the casualties? not really evne a conflict, more a skirmish
Right? I was pretty shocked to see those were the numbers when researching for this. 😂
Not a small number for a 21st century ground war but for a planetary war you’d expect the numbers to be way higher.
How many people does a single alliance and a turian ship have? 10? 20?
@@Mestari1Gaming
well, the alliance commited a whole entire fleet and turians answered in force, the ground siege of a colony is also not without casualties.
There must have been a retcon, right?
Maybe.
In the original release and first ports of ME2, there are datapads that explains it differently.
The initial cause is the same.
Alliance, relay activation, Turian patrol, that's all the same.
Location and time period are different.
There’s a few inconsistencies here and there. Most of my research is from the codex entries as they are in the Legendary Edition.
The majority of my sources point to a 3 month period sometime in 2157 and for the location to be primarily the colony of Shanxi.
The location of relay 314 is entirely up for debate.
Ah yes, the first contact war, or also known "that time the Turians pissed themselves when they realized they just attacked not a fledging species that just discovered FTL, but a peer nation who had the capacity to require the entirety of council space *and* uplifting the Yahg if they wanted to put them down".
You ever wonder *why* humanity is allowed on the council despite barely joining? Its because our military capacity before First Contact was so high that we easily rivaled the rest of council space combined. Like our first instinct was to agree to Dreadnought limits and then turn around and make a shit ton of carriers to circumvent said limit.
Asari and Salarians breathed a collective sigh of relief when they realized we weren't like the Rachni or Krogan and could actually be diplomatically appeased and were even friendly when not pissed off about a major war crime incident.
Humanity wasn't tough shit. They were more like North Korea. It's got fighting men, they can kill and win some battles. But they don't have a snowball's chance of victory. However, they are a real nation, with a real army better than some third world backwaters.
bout time 😁
REMEMBER SHANXI!!
i want a game of this setting but a real time with slo mo like aliens dark descent

I have a streamlabs dono button I used when I used to twitch stream. I’ll track that down and share it in the video descriptions moving forward.
I still prefer ME1 over any of the Sequels.
It went from an RPG to a shooter real quick.
And don't even remind me that Andromeda exists.
It's free real estate
Hard to argue with that 😂
Why do spaceships in Mass Effect have wings? They are just a huge waste of space and materials.
Same reason as Star Wars probably cause it looks cool 😂
They are also capable of flying in atmosphere which might be something to consider.
@@MTJDisorder Star Wars isn't really science fiction. It's more of a fantasy universe set in space. Also yes, some of them can fly through atmosphere but they don't do that in the same way a plane does. A plane can't hover and it has to accelerate in order for its wings to work. Spaceships use mass manipulation as their means of flight, which does not require wings. Helicopters, while not being comparable to Mass Effect's space ships, also don't need wings, because they use a completely different flying technique.
@@BarelloSmith lolol I’m just making excuses you’re totally right 😂
@@MTJDisorder I know, sorry for taking it too seriously! 😅 Sometimes I get to hung up on details.
