Starts off calling out and looking around as if to say "Hey, anybody free for lunch?" Hearing no response, he tries again. Nothing. "Screw it," he thinks, "I'm gonna go back pecking!"
Very good footage & sound... I've been hearing this call around here (Greater Vancouver area, BC) in the last few weeks and finally figured out it was a Northern Flicker (I often seen them each spring, typically at ground level near grass yards, but I had never *heard* them...) Thanks for posting...! :)
This is the bird that keeps waking me up in the early mornings. For some reason they think my house is a potential nesting/storage place and they drill LOUDLY on my house. At first I thought some robber was trying to break into my second floor by drilling. Then I went outside and saw this bird.
I had several flickers in my yard years ago (I thought they were golden flickers because they had golden/yellow feathers but also had the red stripe behind the head and a black necklace on front neck). I was thrilled to see one back this year in early spring, but hadn't seen it since a bad snow storm we had recently. I heard this same call this video demonstrates this morning and wondered who was making it. I'm hoping the flickers are back after a decade of no sign of them.
Red is my favorite color and I wish we had the western northern flicker woodpeckers where I live cause he wears a red mustache LOL and awesome video by the way :)
I heard this walking to my bus stop one day and it creeped me out you can say it isn't scary but when you aren't expecting it hearing a clicking noise can really creep you out.
Crow : Do you mind stop calling someone, im trying to take a nap! Woodpecker : Shut up, I an not talking to you! Crow: Well you are, duhhh! Woodpecker: *woodpecking*
great vid ... I have one visiting my yard . wasn't sure what it was . since I live in Texas I can assume that the bird has migrated here for the winter . thanks for posting
Wood: Please , no. do not harm me, I have a family I cannot be pecked Woodpecker: *Caws to the sky and looks daringly at the wood* Wood: *holds breath* please do not peck me good sir! Narrator *(In a British accent)* : Ah but it is in the woodpeckers genes to peck wood, It is all he knows, and subconsciously it gives him joy and pleasure. His Father and the one before him to the beginning of time has pecked wood, the tree knows this, and knows the woodpecker may have no mercy, yet the tree lies in wait for what will become of him. Narrator: As the woodpecker begins to peck, the tree screams in pain, and the woodpecker knows he is causing the tree pain, but cannot stop for it is his duty in life to peck trees.

You’ve obviously never had them on your house at 7am.
Especially good when it's on top of a streetlamp housing. Nice and loud. Well, not as nice, but impressive. :)
It don't matter what time of day birds are amazing. And just the strength agility and pure awesome oh these are totally cool
Not to mention the crow in the background amazing

The bird doing the pecking is a male and is announcing to any nearby female that he is 'available'.
Love this beautiful bird and its noise lol. These birds are everywhere In my homestate Connecticut I hear them all the time early morning
Ah yes the sounds of my home state.
Wow. The flicker stayed on for so long. Nice footage!

"Right here Officer, this is the bird that has been waking me up the last several mornings by pecking on the roof of my house."
A calming break from the world thx for this
Thanks for this video. It helped to positively identify a bird I saw clinging to the side of a Doug fir in my yard.

Wood: Please , no. do not harm me, I have a family I cannot be pecked
Woodpecker: *Caws to the sky and looks daringly at the wood*
