@@anju04aa Yup! Honestly I'm really proud of Chaitanya. Along with all the rave reviews and accolades, he's being interviewed by a guy who literally interviews the top dogs of world cinema. This really is a big deal.

This film is made by Chaitanya Tamhane whose first Marathi movie Court ( albeit much acclaimed at film festivals ) enraged me so much, for making a fool of me. I felt insulted about some one’s ability to take a serious film goer like me, for granted to this level. Even K Bapiyaa and KC Bokadia had not done this to me ( viewer like me ) in such pretentious manner. At least they were upfront about it, when they made Mawali and Raja Babu type of films. Chaitanya is at it again in his latest movie The Disciple , and he takes the viewer granted for one more time, and this time more boldly and brazenly and with coldness. This movie is overhyped , pretentious, the narrative is sluggish and comes from the mindset of a director who wants your total submission at the cost of your attention and more importantly sacrificing & destroying every possibility of entertaining the viewer. The result is a disastrously made movie which neither entertains and nor engages. This is a typical film festival movie which is backed by a solid name like Alfanso Curaon who made Gravity and Roma and he is the producer of this movie too. So, such brand name has ensured its visibility in many international film festivals and no one dare criticize it due to such heavy name backing it up. Even Anupma Chopra was very guarded about being critical of this film, and she sort of shied away from using harsh words, which she is otherwise not afraid of using on films like Radhe. This movie is full of long and wide shots which Chaitanya used in his movie court too, with an intention to bring theatrical perspective to the story, but with very little effect to the viewing experience or giving any dimension to the director’s vision. Slow continuous still shots of 2 to 3 minutes with regular intervals on empty streets of Mumbai with long monologues or long duration classical mehfils shots of the protagonist depicting his struggle to strive at the artform, only make this experience thoroughly boring and jarring. Such long shots make this film so long, that they work further against its shallow content and its stiff upper lip type approach to its presentation. Javed saab had shared an anecdote about two types of films that are guaranteed to be definitely boring - First type - मैं मेरी फिल्म से आपको कुछ सिखाने वाला हूँ - Second type - आप ने ऐसी फिल्म पहले कभी देखी नहीं है . I am going to add the third type to it - That you submit yourself to me (the film maker) and watch my film. The disciple qualifies in all three types. Just avoid it.
Interesting take. I appreciate your view but completely disagree. It depends on what the purpose of cinema, or any art, is to you - it sounds like for you that’s entertainment. For me art is about experience, and entertainment may be part of that. I did not find The Disciple preachy or striving for exceptionalism or demanding submission. It has the feel of early Gus van Sant with long shots slowly moving on to the protagonist. The writing was also elegiac, especially the last scene with the busker. Perhaps you didn’t find it so, but I found it rather meditative to think about confronting one’s own mediocrity.
@@ahanadatta9228 I respect your view with utmost sincerity. As veterans in the film industry have always said , the film is either good film or a bad film . The films that suit my own mediocrity are shataranj Ke khiladi , Agantuk ( and at least 5 more from Satyajit Ray ) , schinlder's list , sholay , Mashaal , Deool ( Marathi ) , Maqbool , Astu ( marathi) , DCH , Dil dhadkane Do , And most importantly to prove my mediocrity is at such a low level , I think 99% of Hrishida's ( Hrishikesh Mulherjee ) films are damn good films. These are just representative of what is meant by good films for me. In same token , my humble take is that Disciple is a bad film . Those claiming superior mediocrity ( it is always relative ) , will find disciple a good film. I wish them all the best .

Indeed we should thank the interviewer to have brought out the director's inner thought process.
Kudos to the interviewer.. he listened very carefully and asked some really interesting questions. A quality quite rare to see these days.
I loved this movie. I'm beginning to explore Indian classical music as a result of it, and it feels like the beginning of a rewarding journey.
Chaitanya dada , you made history , as far as Indian Cinema is concerned generally , and particularly Marathi cinema.
trust the intuition of the viewer... words of gold. we often forget that art is a two-way street.
