    In German we’d say:
DER SCHÜLER ist ein genauestens konstruierter, langsam, fast hypnotisch voranschreitender Film, der sich als mehr als nur die präzise Analyse eines kämpfenden, leidenden Künstlers entpuppt.

I think the movie tried to say that sometimes we have to self evaluate that whether we are worth , are we so talented. like his fellow student the lady she makes it big in her career thru classical singer.

I remember when Madonna's Ray of Light was released and her subsequent 'Cyberraga' song, many classically inclined people I know derided it for the temerity of plucking Indian classical traditions and fusing them with modern electronic music. That's the thing about classical music, isn't it? So laser-focused on technique and refinement that any creative improvisation or experimentation, or fusions, however soulful, will result in dismissal for transgressions. I sometimes wonder if practitioners within the classical fraternity realise that these traditions are in fact an outcome of frequent and fluid experimentations by their ancestors since time immemorial, with every generation finding ways to perfect these art forms. Thus, in our creative free will, the search for new musical horizons is inextricable.
The risk is of course the dilution of ancestral heritage/tradition, but at which point did we even consider it as heritage for the new generation to subscribe dutifully, might I add, painfully? Was it during their codification? Was it during colonisation that made the locals assert their national pride through classical music?
As you've said, its theme is universal. Reminds me of wonderful artistes like Joni Mitchell who was attacked by the media because she stepped away from playing folk and ventured into black musicality (jazz/afro percussions), thereby disrupting her 'sweet white girl folk singer' image as if that's solely her range. Or the genius Icelandic singer Bjork who gave the 'middle finger' to classical music for its lack of democracy towards unconventional music instruments to co-exist with it.
So what should classical music do? Keep abreast with new technology? Ingress into pop shows? What should it do to stay relevant and palatable? I'm amazed that this movie covers the conundrum between individuality, artistry, tradition and spirituality without at all being heavy-handed. It flows, as mentioned before, like the poetry of William Blake - of innocence of art purity to the experience of commercial reality and perhaps to a re-innocence undertaken by Sharad by playing the business system to promote the classics through USBs.
Ultimately, the market claims us all. Like the train 'music player' in the final scene serenading the passengers for his hand-to-mouth subsistence, so sits Sharad, staring out of the window, perhaps hoping to sell more to those willing to listen.
A wonderful movie and one of the best I've seen this year. And of course an insightful review by you. :)

You have spoken eloquently and from your heart. I think opposition for anything novel or a change in any field has been happening from times immemorial. When our ancestors codified classical music some people may have opposed it. I think it is a necessary trial by fire for any new idea.
This way you can make out whether the change has merit or it is just a change for change sake. The naysayers will discover loopholes and weaknesses which will be addressed and the progenitor of the change will become stronger as a result.

Thanks for taking your time out to share your thoughts. I think it's also about survival of Indian classical music as a genre by itself today - as scholarliness has reduced : even popular artists are only known for their renditions of century old compositions. With very little novelty in the genre, fusion is becoming more popular as its more creative.
Heard that Madonna song u mentioned, it was interesting ;) If you are interested in carnatic-western fusion u could check out a song by a band called 'agam' : 'dhanasree thillana'. The power of the drums and electric guitar compliment the composition quite well, in my opinion.

The movie did not attempt to answer any questions or did not try to take a position on what is considered a high art form.
    Questions like:
Is he actually talented or just a mediocre living in disillusionment?
Should “commercialism” of art form like the reality shows be looked down upon?
Is the Guru- Sishya (disciple) system intrinsically an exploitative system where the guru exploits the disciple for his own benefit?
Is over the top reverence given to the art form and its practioners just a load of BS (as one of the characters bluntly explains it)
Chaitanya’s strength lies in never trying to answer any of these but just lay it out for the viewers to decide for themselves.

You should watch "Court" Movie if you are interested in indian legal system...... Directed by chaitanya tamhane

  • @gmilind
    @gmilind 3 роки тому +1

This film is made by Chaitanya Tamhane whose first Marathi movie Court ( albeit much acclaimed at film festivals ) enraged me so much, for making a fool of me. I felt insulted about some one’s ability to take a serious film goer like me, for granted to this level.
Even K Bapiyaa and KC Bokadia had not done this to me ( viewer like me ) in such pretentious manner. At least they were upfront about it, when they made Mawali and Raja Babu type of films.
Chaitanya is at it again in his latest movie The Disciple , and he takes the viewer granted for one more time, and this time more boldly and brazenly and with coldness.
This movie is overhyped , pretentious, the narrative is sluggish and comes from the mindset of a director who wants your total submission at the cost of your attention and more importantly sacrificing & destroying every possibility of entertaining the viewer.
The result is a disastrously made movie which neither entertains and nor engages.
This is a typical film festival movie which is backed by a solid name like Alfanso Curaon who made Gravity and Roma and he is the producer of this movie too.
So, such brand name has ensured its visibility in many international film festivals and no one dare criticize it due to such heavy name backing it up.
Even Anupma Chopra was very guarded about being critical of this film, and she sort of shied away from using harsh words, which she is otherwise not afraid of using on films like Radhe.
This movie is full of long and wide shots which Chaitanya used in his movie court too, with an intention to bring theatrical perspective to the story, but with very little effect to the viewing experience or giving any dimension to the director’s vision.
Slow continuous still shots of 2 to 3 minutes with regular intervals on empty streets of Mumbai with long monologues or long duration classical mehfils shots of the protagonist depicting his struggle to strive at the artform, only make this experience thoroughly boring and jarring.
Such long shots make this film so long, that they work further against its shallow content and its stiff upper lip type approach to its presentation.
Javed saab had shared an anecdote about two types of films that are guaranteed to be definitely boring -
    First type - मैं मेरी फिल्म से आपको कुछ सिखाने वाला हूँ -
    Second type - आप ने ऐसी फिल्म पहले कभी देखी नहीं है .
I am going to add the third type to it - That you submit yourself to me (the film maker) and watch my film.
The disciple qualifies in all three types.
    Just avoid it.

@@TheJimmyCage I watched it. I didn't love it but I really appreciated the story. The scene with the music collector was excellent. And it's not often that we see a character who fails to fulfill their potential by the end. I also loved that they didn't make his guru the villian trying to impede his character. I was also happy that they highlighted the talent show girl. I've often said they strip people of the same uniqueness that got them on the show and make them more commercial. Commercial isn't always better but neither is a strict traditionalist like our main character.

Although i am sure you too must sometimes have faced an inner conflict if you should do trailer reviews like so many other channels do.
But that is where your strength lies, you are the one who has actually taken time out of you life to watch these films and then presented the review. So as subscriber i have much more respect for you as a presenter of this channel then i would ever have for those two min trailer reviewers.

I watched this movie and an interview of Andre Agassi back to back. Here is the link to Agassi interview
    ua-cam.com/video/RKD_rO1KjIg/v-deo.html
Both touched upon a similar theme. Agassi mentioned that he was forced by his father into Tennis world very early on and he hated Tennis even when he won Grand Slam. It was exactly a counter question to what The Disciple handles. That is: How do you love something which you don't like but you are good at (in this case Tennis). The Disciple handles the opposite issue. What if you are passionate about something but don't have talent to be good at it.
    Both are really interesting perspectives.
I really liked your review, especially you being outsider to this culture and this type of Musical world. A lot of finer nuances would appeal to people who are part of the system or understand this world.
