WW2 Memorial Day and the Threat of Unexploded Ordnance: Russian Roulette (Dispatch 80)

  • With the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine holding, the city of Donetsk is slowly beginning to fill with people. As the fear of sudden death from shelling begins to fade - for now - a few thousand people gathered this week at the city’s World War II memorial for Donbas Liberation Day. The event, which commemorates when Soviet armies forced the Nazis from the region in 1943, featured veterans speaking about that conflict, as well as those fighting in the current struggle.
    In addition to being able to celebrate victories old and new, the people of the Donetsk region are now able to count the costs of the brutal fighting over the past few months. VICE News headed to the town of Ilovaisk to see how the DNR are delivering food aid to beleaguered residents, who for weeks have been without gas, electricity, and water. Not only are the civilians of the town facing a humanitarian crisis, the threat of unexploded ordnance from the fighting also looms large. Now, small but dedicated teams are trying to dispose of the ordnance before more civilians get hurt.

      Division are more cultural. In East Ukraine most are Russian speaking. In West Ukraine most are Ukrainian speaking.
      Add to this quite succesfull in economics Russia just other the border with strong leader and complete economic black hole in Ukraine with circus instead of goverment. Those peoples just do not see any future in Ukraine. They share Russian culture, Russian language, they see that Russia are much more succesfull country than Ukraine. Add to this that they were stripped of any political influence and democratic rights by violent coup in Kiev(and its second such coup actually, so peoples have know what would follow). Attempt to ban Russian language by new Kiev goverment was last straw that started rebellion.
      Main problem for rebels are that Russia are really reluctant to take them. Crimea was needed due to Naval base and you have seen how job was done(no casualties, peacefull and effective). In case of Donbass Russian govement cannot left East Ukrainians without support due to Russian population pressure, but at the same do not want to annex it. As result Kiev have false hope that they can crush rebels without negotiations.

    Now I think that I have a pretty extensive amount of knowledge on military equipment and techniques, but I may be wrong about this. So can someone with some professional level experience answer this? Not a pro Russian/DNR not a fps player that takes himself to serious. The DNR said that the mortar shell was supposed to destroy the railroad, but isn't that highly accurate for a mortar shell I mean it's in the middle of the track. Could that just be bad luck or purposeful? Why would they do that anyways, didn't they plan on taking the city back? I understand it was for cutting off supply lines but still isn't there multiple ways for the DNR to get supplies?

    Exacerbated the situation in the Donetsk Basin. During the last day backed by the Kremlin separatists and Russian troops fired up to 40 times the Ukrainian position.
    Linked with the authorities of Ukraine Dmytro Tymczuk military expert said that the separatists attacked, among others, the airport in Donetsk controlled by the Ukrainian army. Witnesses said that the shelling was carried out with a number of villages with a gun "Grad". Ukrainians managed to repel the attack.
    In addition, the separatists fired by launchers "Grad" and artillery several towns, among them Marinka, Jasynuwatę, Toneńke and Dogs. The local population militants explained that is responsible for the Ukrainian army. In addition, the Ukrainian separatists fired several outposts and camp in Debalcewie.

    Ukraine lost to putin, not rebels. Rebels cant buy or use artillery like the "rebels" did. It takes at least a year to learn how to use artillery with the accuracy they showed. Rebels also run out of artillery shells, these guys diddnt. Rebels run out of food and fuel, these guys diddnt. Rebels go home at night, these guys never did. Rebels have poor logistics, these guys were better than fedex. Rebels could not defeat a national military as easy as these guys did. I think it was all elite russian troops fighting. I think the real rebels played a defensive role only and did zero fighting the last several weeks. But, if the peoples will was for russia to invade, then it still counts.

    • @lukebruce5234

      @biggold8576 9 років тому

      Luke Bruce Im brilliant, youre not. It takes a well trained team to use artillery. These "rebels" did not have this kind of accuracy and sucess until 2weeks ago. And how on earth could they fire a endless supply of mortars? Rebels do not have vast supplies of these shells. It was like a bad Rocky movie. Just as they were about to get knocked out, they suddenly became dominant and couldnt lose. Use your head. Do you support putin? Russia? Or the separatist? Or all 3?

Sure, some of it was simple and sturdy, but otherwise the quality control was all over the map.

    So I don't understand why the rebels are so eager to return to the days of the Soviet Union, the Soviets didn't exactly treat the Ukrainians all that well, in fact when the Nazi's marched into Ukraine the Ukrainians were actually happy that they were no longer under Stalins rule. Furthermore, to the Soviet Union, Ukraine was just a military base the size of the country, that's it.

    Equal measures of cereal and sugar. What are they doing with all that sugar? That's over a pound of sugar per person per week. Half cereal covered with half sugar in the morning? Or is it grain that expands when cooked? If the shelling doesn't get them, the Cossack aid may lead to diabetes. And only one can of fish and two cans of stew--how large are the cans? I feel sorry for the poor citizens caught in the fighting between the two sides.

    I understand why you put the explosion at the beginning as a teaser, but what I learned during my time working at a local station was that this trick also lets the viewer know that the explosion will be the most or even only exciting part of the piece and so they may quit watching. I guess on UA-cam it doesn't matter so much because you've already gotten the view count but even so, do you think the advantages outweigh the risks? Thanks
