  • Hey kids!!
Today we play "Music Call". As a Music Director for Active Rock Radio, I get flooded with music from labels, promoters, managers, etc. and am asked to add the song to our rotation. Today, I show you how I would deal with someone sending me Majestica "Metal United" and whether or not I'd add them to our Rotation, which category of Rotation, and if it's dayparted.
A little insight into how Rock Radio used to be programmed!
    Links below and Enjoy!!

To be fair this isn't a "normal" Majestica song. To sugest a better one i would sugest "MAJESTICA - Above The Sky" instead.
Some fun facts though. The singer is also one of the guitar players in Sabaton who are way bigger (and better imo) then Majestica. And the drummer in Sabaton is married to Floor Jansen from Nightwish..... (just had to put that out there.... ;) )
Thanks for a great reaction as always though and greetings from Sweden!

I plan on doing a Sabaton song, just trying to narrow it down. I'm getting quite a few suggestions!! And I was told in my Nightwish reactions about Floor and her husband. Didn't know about the singer of this band being in Sabaton, so thanks for the help!
      Cheers from Nashville!

Yes, musically you’re spot on. However I wish you had paid more attention to the lyrics. It’s a song written and recorded in the middle of the pandemic, and it was written with the intention of calling for unity and solidarity within the metal community, particularly towards those who saw their means of making a living pretty much disappear for a while. THAT is what I love about this song. And that’s why there were so many festival shots. About their playing on a lake to a couple dozen people? Well, the video was also filmed in the middle of Covid restrictions.

Don't agree at all, first know they are fore hobby and FUN. The lead guitar/vocalist Tommy Johanssons main work is the lead guitarist in SABATON eat that, while chewing dirt........

I really like Majestica and Tommy actually has an amazing vocalrange. This one is not really representative for Majestica. The Christmas Carrol album is great, I wish your first reaction to Majestica was from that one instead.

Yep, they're just like Dropkick Murphies....
It's funny when someone thinks they've nailed someone down from one song, with utter confidence, and they're completely wrong.

    Tommy is great!
We have a word in spanish that I know doesn't have a perfect equivalent in english, but is perfect for him: "él es muy simpático".
Hopefully been from the south you know some spanish and can get what I mean 😅

Love this format and approach - hope you do more of these! Quite often I catch myself wondering about the radio appeal of this or that song, imagining myself in the shoes of someone in your position. Sometimes the answer seems obvious, but sometimes it's baffling. I hope you eventually do a Devin Townsend song, as I frequently wonder why he does not have a broader appeal, despite having some seemingly blow-up-worth gems in his sizeable catalog. Like Supercrush, or Spirits Will Collide, or Kingdom, or even Ih-Ah. Looking forward to more music calls! :)

“Bro Rock!” Ha! You called it for my intro to Majestica! I’ll again plug Alter Bridge as one of the best rock bands of this century for your future consideration: Blackbird, WordsDarker…, Cry of Achilles, so many more…

I have a band that virtually no one has heard of BUT they should be. Imperial Sin - in particular Manipulatorium. They’re a Polish metal band who’ve been grinding away since 2008.

You said to give it a Cher, so here goes. "Do you believe in life after love, after love, after love...", how's that? Did anyone else hear the Manchester United chant in this tune. Thanks for your analysis. Makes perfect sense.

I prefer "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves", but I thank you regardless!! I didn't hear the United chant in the song, but from the results today, neither did United.

Thanks for the breakdown on the behind-the-scenes of corporate radio. One the surface it may seem unfair but there really needs to be some way to process and manage what can only be described as an inundation of "unique" submissions. And yes, music is very subjective, even the most formulaic ones.

    • @TheWyldesidewithEricClark

Thanks for the comment! As a music director for rock radio, most folks don't understand how much music we are sent by the whole gamut of people...from labels to handwritten CD dropped in our box. And every band is "The Best Band You Never Heard!". And in Nashville, it's a tsunami of submissions. Hard to get through without being somewhat jaded. I get it, everyone in your circle says you rock and if I don't agree, I'm an idiot and don't know anything about music. And something bands forget: Who's paying for all this? Not you, yet. So you have to be ready to adjust and jump through some hoops along the way. I could go on, but I won't bore you!
      Cheers!
      Eric

so, with all Respect, you could read me the Phonebook of lastcattlepostbeforeendofworld, i really enjoy the tone of your Voice:). Majestica is exactly what you say, this goes on the boombox , when sitting at riverbank doing pigs on stick in summer here:) and they have variety, but somehow, 4/4. like pointed out. doesnt the majority of radio listeners go more for this earfriendly simple tone, instead for an ghost love score?

    • @TheWyldesidewithEricClark
      @TheWyldesidewithEricClark  2 роки тому +3

Thanks for the comment and compliment! And to answer your question: Maybe. This depends on how you built the "core" of your library/format. So if I'm normally playing more progressive sounds, GLS would fit with some of their music. Also, it depends on "daypart" or when the song is played. You can be a bit looser at night and overnight. Back in the day, we used the overnights to play full albums. DSOTM, Fragile, Zep 4, etc. But for the "drive time", most stations program in 15 minute blocks. This is because research shows the average listener to radio has it on for about 15 minutes at a time. This is you driving in your car to work, errands, shit like that. The percentage of "listeners" who have a constant stream of the station going are rare. Rock stations are usually on in Blue Collar work settings, and even then, how much is someone actually listening. So both songs/bands could potentially be played on an Active Rock station (modern rock with a classic/established core), but this is dependent on the programmer and music director really understanding their market/city. This is done through phones, live appearances, live shows, etc.
Sorry that took so long, and there is a lot more involved, but I hope that sort of helps!
      Cheers from Nashville!
      Eric

@@TheWyldesidewithEricClark . now i am flashed of the shier extend of the Answer, thx a lot! First off: take your Time, or if you dont have the Time, just dont take it to answer. i know, how consuming it can be when many sources want an response, you gotta sort, onm time or can be sheduled, high or low prime to do.
the time to listen i can just agree, getting my fems to work, the switch at latest after 3rd song, bcs commercial/ newsfeed/songs not apreciated. and this in mind , i hardly can imagine an GLS Bohemian rapsody or the Wall full as an Radio Song in Main Times, but some like an 3:40 Minute 4/4 Rocksong is drilled to my ears all the Time, or one of the now hip asian Girls, wich all sound the Same, what surely is produced and not artists fault. thx again, when you do the next NW i really be curious about your Choice and reaction, which also can be devastating, i honour the work , not the personal outcome. Till then, feel watched and commented :D

The Christmas album is good stuff. Floor, also has Tommy do the music arrangements of some of her covers. Tommy is a bit of a character himself.
This would get play in the old Metal Radio attempts like Z-Rock in Dallas, but those never get much traction in the US (Z Rock lasted what? 10 years?) or the side digital stations you can't get more than a few miles away from the tower. A shame, but thems the breaks.
For radio, I listen locally to The Lodge (106.9 Door County Wi. It's an odd eclectic Adult Contemporary/rock sorta station, they claim "Singer/Songwriter Rock), but more and more, my finger hits the tuner/aux button to mute it (I ride motorcycles so silence/road/wind/mechanical noise is not unknown for listening pleasure) and at work I use a downloaded stream from Radio Paradise radioparadise.com streaming only, former PD for Cali stations and very very eclectic and not what you will find in a commercial station. Plays AC/DC. Tool/Perfect Circle, Zeplin, Floyd etc but also Denge Fever, Allison Krause (often with Robert Plant), Blind Boys Of Alabama, plus Youssou N'Dour, Bombino, toss in some Senor Coconut, Texas Lightning, and the longer Prog that can't get airplay or the whole of Shine On You Crazy Diamond (all of the parts), as well as Mozart. Bach, Grieg etc. Bill plays very little that I go out of my way to skip/mute. Most of which would not be on the same over the air station, Commercial or "Listener Supported."
I'm really not a good target for mass market radio. Like you said. you need a shot gun (and really it has a full choke, because it tends to be too narrow for me), and well, a rifle doesn't work well for me nor even a Claymore mine, as I am the guy underground, firing the skeet and traps out in oddball random directions no one seems to be able to hit.
