What I love the most about this video is that it doesn't seem totally scripted. You can see him struggle in some parts to properly voice his thoughts.
    Patrick Stewart, I applaud you.

i wanted 2 cry myself. that was very bold and humbling of Mr. Stewart. Thank you sir, for starting up awareness for an epidemic worldwide!! I commend you Mr. Stewart as a life-long single man, I need to know the importance of treating a lady as an equal and not as a toy. I've never dated, kissed or married, but I've learned more than loved. Thank you, Mr. Patrick Stewart.

This is one of the most courageous actions a human person can do. I loved this man as the capt'n of the Enterprise, now I admire and have the highest respect for him as a wonderful human being. Thank you for this testimony, may it be heard in Spain where there is a severe problem of domestic violence.

Aishwarya Rai is my favourite actress and she played a character in 2006 in a movie called Provoked. It's about a Punjabi woman who was abused by her husband. Sexually, physically and psychologically. Eventually, she went into his room and set him on fire. He was fatally injured from the experience and died sometime later in the hospital. Her name was Kiranjit Ahluwalia and she faced a decade of serious abuse from her husband in London. His name was Deepak Ahluwalia. They indicted her for "murdering" him and were going to sentence her to a long time in prison, maybe even life without parole. But her helpers reduced the sentence to manslaughter and she only did three years in prison.
It's a good movie and it depicts Aishwarya Rai's TRUE performance skills. Kiranjeet didn't even have a bad time in the prison where she was sentenced to. She had friends there, mostly. Great film.

You can tell this issue hits real damned close to home with him, demonstrated by his real candidness and difficulty discussing the issue. Takes balls to discuss something like that and present it when your personally involved in it like he is. Kudos to Patrick.

Thank you for your kind words. I am doing fine and continue to find my peace by helping others who are in turmoil without direction and means of change and exit from harm.
I have rescued my children from an abusive mother, where alcohol played a major role in her ill ways. With tremendous difficulty, going against the powerful tides of discrimination against men, I succeeded in having primary care and custody of my children. A feat, that is very uncommon for fathers, who are usually destroyed!

This is a wonderful spot! It is great to see someone talk honesty about domestic violence. Now, if Patrick Stewart and his friends would be honest about AIDS and other STDS and if stars would actually come out of the closet, then programs would be more effective because the public would actually believe the supporters, as in this ad. Keep up the great work. This is why people respect Stewart so much.

What a beautiful man. I am a survivor of domestic violence. Most people don't get it and actually accuse the female of "you must've liked it or you wouldn't have stayed". They don't understand the threats that are made upon these women and don't understand the fear that is instilled upon them. My ex threatened to take away my little boy and actually did try. Before you divorce, if there is no custody agreement, so if he'd have taken him, it would've been ok according to law. We're ok now.

People shouldn't assume provocation, but provocation does certainly occur, because my mother would do it on purpose. She would antagonize my father with him telling her for several minutes that she's going to provoke him to lose his temper and hit her. She would do it on purpose so she could tell everyone that he hit her and turn everyone against him. Of course it would be absurd if I were suggesting that he shouldn't have just left the house instead.

Domestic violence needs to be eradicated! I grew up in a similar situation to Mr. Stewart so I can see where he's coming from and this needs to stop. I agree that governments need to step up in the same way as they do for anti drug, anti smoking, and anti child abuse campaigns but we also need to increase awareness and educate everyone that this behavior is unacceptable and that by doing nothing is the same as condoning it.

I don't think he's trying to say that only violence against women exists and others are impacted or affected, but he grew up with violence against his mom and that is what he can speak to intelligently. That is what he wants to solve because that's what destroyed his life. I guarantee if you asked him, he would say all domestic violence should be obliterated.

I witnessed many instances of wife beating as a child and adolescent. My parents were alcoholics and used to fight regularly. I personally had to wrestle kitchen knives, fireplace pokers, and on one occasion a gun away from my mother. My father just used his fists. My mother was beaten so long and severly that she developed trauma induced glaucoma in both eyes. I was an only child and never knew when my parents would come home drunk and begin fighting. Thank you Mr. Stewart, for your commitment.

No matter who you are violence and manipulation should not be forced upon another person. There are weak men and weak woman in this world. There are very strong men and very strong woman in this world. It is my hope that good should prevail because those who do nothing about it are just as bad as the ones who commit the violence. Ignorance is bless, but what is so blissful about staying idle in the face of violence and discrimination. To truly love humanity one has to truly love oneself.

I know how he feels. My father was very short tempered and he bullied my mum a lot. When i was in my teens he needed to find an excuse to cause an argument with her, so he'd use me as the tool. Then one day i just couldn't take seeing him bully her any more so i ran away from home hoping that it would make him leave her alone, remove the cause of the argument, remove the argument. Sadly it didn't work and he found other ways. She died of cancer last year and i am mentally scarred forever.

I appreciate the video and your honesty. I have read some of the macho comments on this page. I went through a bad relationship in North Hollywood, Cali in 2000. I had to go to the hospital. I filed restraining orders. He continued to stalk me and I eventually moved to Austin, Texas. The comments made by the macho men sounds like the response from my ex. The day the police showed up he was on the porch like nothing happened. I do have a form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from the event.

The situation is blown out of proportion. A small percentage use serious violence on a regular basis. Also there are levels of violence. The same with women, 1/5 is a huge number too. Violence from women is more often emotional abuse than physical. Like my above post, emotional abuse can potentially provoke physical violence. Your teacher is just passing on information from the government and you'll find that the goverment often exaggerates the truth. Another factor is stress.

Personally, I think it takes only one to be hurtful or violent, or to ruin a relationship, but it always takes two to make a relationship work, and love isn't always enough.
    .
Yeah, if people want to "fight," both have to want it, but when is it a fight, and when is it someone defending themselves from a one-sided attack? To me that's not a fight.

GoodDogNigel: I am a male survivor of Domestic Violence. I called the police no less than 7 times and on one occasion, after I called them they asked ME the VICTIM to leave! I refused and prevailed!
Men's suffering is NOT a FEW cases they are in the tens of thousands! Some mild, others severe.
You are right, women are not violent monsters and NEITHER are MEN!
According to hundreds of studies women and men initiate DV about the same. Source Prof. Martin S. Fiebert. with 30 years of studies.

@ThePennyPincher "A doctor said so" (even if he is from, London, England!) is not a study. Keep in mind, also, it's not just beatings that count. Physical intimidation and threats count too. And I agree, society often ignores female on male violence, but the solution isn't to dismiss violence against women, it's to recognize both. Some studies I was reading include the first few links if you type "domestic violence" into google scholar. I'd link it, but youtube won't let me. Easy to find though.

I agree. We need to take domestic abuse very seriously, but we should never forget that one is innocent until proven guilty. I obviously know nothing of your family, but when I was married to a woman who became excessively controlling, and I mean to a ridiculous level, I decided to end it. I couldn't live like that. Divorce takes courage, and it's always better than violence.

Violence is not only physical in a relationship, nor does it come solely from the male figure. such violence can come just as easily from one party in a gay relationship or from the female in a straight relationship. emotional violence is just as damaging if not more than physical. It is a hard thing to realize while its happening, it takes times for some to realize they have been abusive. its a very hard (if not imposable) situation to solve from with in the relationship.
