The 3 Best Hikes on the Road to Hana: Secret Waterfall Hike, Pipiwai Trail, and Black Sand Beach!

- We set ourselves a challenge of running the three best hikes on the Road to Hana in a single day. Between the Black Sand Beach, the bamboo forest Pipiwai Trail (and the nearby Ohe'o Gulch/Seven Sacred Pools) and a secret waterfall hike recommended by a local, we spent a spectacular ten miles out exploring the Road to Hana waterfalls, beaches, and forests. Added bonus of trail running : avoiding all the major crowds that are typical along most of the Road to Hana stops. If you're looking for more hikes and some of the best stops on the Road to Hana in Maui, these three trails will not disappoint!

@@LiveHardxLoveHard Hi, I successfully hiked Villager, and not even one cactus poke, LOL. The Solomon Trail runners did great. I attempted to do Mile High, through Rattlesnake Canyon yesterday out in Anza Borrego, but when we came upon a 40' foot dry waterfall I failed twice at my attempt to climb up. The rock was too smooth and no handholds to get a good grip to pull myself up. The summit was unsuccessful for me. I am going to do my research for another way up. I hiked out of the canyon and I still did 8 miles, but seems like so little compared to our usual hikes these days. But enough about me, how was Maui? It looked amazing!!

Honestly, once of the coolest short hikes we've ever done in out lives -- probably top five of all time hikes of under 3 miles.

We both used to sleep in, but once we discovered the beauty of getting out on the trails early, our bodies just started naturally popping awake early, as if to tell us "Lets get out on those trails!" Haha that's the way to take the initiative, Liam 😂 And not to worry, we're planning out our summer and fall schedule and there will be many warm days and polar plunges into icy lakes coming up! This week, though, pretty sure you'll be happy about the snow when you see the monster we are climbing!

So basically, you park like you're going to Kopiliula falls -- there's kind of a bridge around there you go past and park. and then it's to the right (if you're facing the direction of the falls rather than the ocean) of where the Kopiliula trail is. Not sure it's technically a legal public trail, but the locals told us it was cool and it totally was. And Black Sand beach is freaking epic -- that's the one we'd most recommend if you haven't done it. Go right when it opens, be the first one out there. One of the prettiest, most spectacular coastal run/hikes we've ever done. ❤

That’s just spectacular footage. I love Hawaii. I’ve probably said this, but you need to do Kalalau. My favorite place on earth. And not Hawaii, but for beach hikes, the Olympic coast in Washington is amazing too.

Haha yes!! We absolutely do. We made a mini version of our “trail fails” as a YT short a little while ago, but we’ve got tons of fails from the past year now haha. We’ve actually been thinking of making a whole outtakes video at some point just to really keep it real around here 🤣

Haha that's ok -- Adam laughs at me for this all the time too, but now it's super funny because I always point out where he does it too on super slippery or steep terrain. Nothing funnier than a 6'6'' jock running like a little girl on camera! But in truth, it really does help me balance on the steep stuff. --E

what kind of hiking boots are good for running?
That's a good question. Of course it depends on the runner, but we both love the Salomon X-Ultras as a flexible hiking boot that is sturdy enough for any trail but also super easy and comfortable to run in. We put a link to them on our gear page.

@@reijicoast4175 Not too much so far. Our encounters with black bears have always been peaceful. But when we venture into Grizzly bear territory we will probably bring bear spray with us just in case.

Did thd mosquitoes feast on you at the waterfall?
Honestly there wasn’t too much of a mosquito problem… it definitely helped that we ran on the trail and they had a hard time catching up. At the waterfall itself they didn’t seem to be too bad, although it’s been a while so maybe we’ve blocked them out of our memory 😂
There’s no “secret” waterfalls anymore on (or off) the road to Hana. Acquiring a USGS 7.5 minute angle topo map and I’ve found them all over the years.
That sounds like an extremely fun project!
