  • Streaming pioneer Netflix is making a business decision by limiting accounts to just one household thus putting an end to password sharing.
Tech expert Marc Saltzman says Canadians could continue to share their account with others but it’ll come at a cost. “…Netflix was growing in popularity they were increasing market share up to about 250 million users worldwide but it’s estimated that about 100 million out of those accounts are from those who are not paying its password sharing and losing to the tune of $7 to $8 billion a year.”
Only premium members can add 2 more accounts. With premium priced at $20.99/month and each additional account at $7.99/month that’s just under $37/month.
The streaming landscape has changed with Disney+, Crave, Amazon, and sports streams racking up consumers’ bills which have forced some to delve into the illegal market.
If you are one of what seems to be many Canadians who are dropping Netflix in favour of other streaming platforms, sources with CHCH News say that almost every other service could soon be following in Netflix’s footsteps when it comes to blocking password sharing.

As soon as I got the notification from Netflix that this was gonna happen, I went online and I cancelled my subscription. That’s $20 I’ll save each month. I barely watched it. Anyway, the main reason I had it was for my daughter who doesn’t live with me, so if I can’t share with her and what’s the use to have it?

Why not just pay for it for your daughter?

OK so we got prime, Disney, clutch, go ahead Netflix impose your Canadian charge for everything, with bonus charges on your program, when your profits drop, you'll see the error of your ways.

What a bunch of techically ignorant programmers that work for Netflix. When I bought my subscription it was because I could take it anywhere and be guranteed good tv in what ever hotel I was in. Now they want it tied to a location. Why is it not tied to a liimited number fo devices? They do seem to know when I sign on with a different device.

"cracks down"? But password sharing was never wrong XD, it's my account so I do with it whatever I want, if they don't like it then they can refuse the service to me, I have the same shows online for free and just gotta deal with a few bothersome ads...

Actually, you agreed to their TOS when signing up, which states among other things that you are only allowed to share your account with people who live with you, and that you can share your account with people who don't live with you if your subscription tier allows it.
Edit: I meant exactly what I said. You say it’s your account and you can share your password if you want? Well, yes and no. Yes, you can, but only with people who live with you. But otherwise, no you can’t. Netflix specifically prohibits (as of 2018) password sharing with people who don’t live with you.
