My dear grandmother taught me to knit when I was maybe 10 years old…..I knitted a bit in college, but after my daughter passed away I took it up again as a therapy…..I know my grandmother never knew, but she saved my life that day when she took time to show me what to do with that yarn……every stitch of every favorite shawl is a tear….

My favorite things I have made are the clothes I have made for my 5 children. They are all having their babies now and I kept a diary of all those little things you'd never remember and the clothes I made them. Golly, the wash of memories! How bitter sweet now! How I enjoyed stitching, and knitting things for them, the kitties and dinosaurs. What a privilege to be able to do that and hoe lovely to see them all in use once again.❤

I'm always so interested in hearing how people learned to knit, crochet, sew, embroider, etc. It's almost always a story of women and I love that. I have started teaching my daughter to knit just as my mom taught me and I hope it's a gift to her just as it was to me!

Thank You so much for selling such beautiful kits. You are an amazing person🤗🤗🤗

The Christmas Cast on Box has beautiful yarn colors for January. My fondest knitting memory took place three years ago when I was teaching my seven year old granddaughter to knit a scarf. She sat on my lap and we video taped it, so upon playing the video back her expressions were priceless as she concentrated on the knitting while trying to watch us being taped. She would be winking one eye and making hilarious expressions through out.

My memories involve my Nana teaching me to knit when I was a little girl. Even though I didn't carry on with it then, I returned to it when I was grown up but I always remember my Nana being so patient.
And as a result, that led me into new crafts along the way, quilting, embroidery, water colours and new friends made too. Such a wonderful creative world I am lucky to be part of...so much inspiration for us all to share with each other. Love and hugs Sue xx

My auntie Doris taught me to knit when I was a child. My tension was always so tight that the stitches barely moved, but she didn’t give in. She would knit for me as a child and eventually she knit for my children. Doris is no longer with us but now I knit for my grandchildren. The baby blankets are my favourite things to knit for them and I think of my lovely Auntie Doris with every stitch . The hours of joy that knitting gives me now I feel is all thanks to her and I am so grateful for her patience in teaching me and the love that she showed ❤ As for book recommendations Ruth Hogan Keeper of lost things. I absolutely adored this book 😊 x

My favourite project in recent times was the Dust of Snow wrap by Helen Stewart. I made this using your beautiful Peonies and Sweet Pea set. One of my favourite stitching items is a hand stitched hexagon crib quilt I made for my firstborn in 1977. We enjoyed it so much and over time I knitted severals scarfs, good memories. I have a happy memory of crocheting my first blanket - I made a trial one so I knew what I was doing for the ‘proper’ blanket, and it turned out so well that I gave it to my baby grandson and it’s very well loved and used. Was lovely to see that even a slightly dodgy first ever project could end up being a favourite in spite of it’s novice maker! And I completely agree that seeing the items we make evoke memories of what we were listening to at the time - it’s a happy reminder of time that you have taken to completely relax - bliss!

I was taught to knit by my Mum and knitted through my teens then again when my daughters were little. I then helped run a brownie pack and we taught 24 little girls to knit! I drifted a bit but then in later life I now knit constantly! Socks are my main joy and I buy wool on holidays and remember where I was and what I was doing as I wear those socks! I knit for the family and also send off a parcel every Christmas for a charity. I adore hand dyed wool but financial restraints these days make me keep special skeins for special patterns and projects. Knitting is definitely my happy place! X

At junior school, when I was about 10 years of age, the girls did knitting for a lesson once a week, I remember making a pair of mittens in this knitting lesson. I was so eager to finish the second mitten, I kept stretching my work to get it to be the same length as the first one I’d made. Consequently the second mitt was about half an inch shorter than the first but I was so pleased to have completed them. I still have that pattern but have lost count of how many pairs I’ve knitted in the 57 years that have since passed but I still remember how happy making that first pair made me.

What fun it is reading everyone's comments. We all seem to have similar feelings - warmth, coziness, togetherness, and interconnectedness that aurrounds creating something with our hands for others or ourselves. My mother was probably the most knitworthy person in my life. She was nearly beside herself with each new pair of socks I'd knit and wore them constantly, proudly proclaiming to everyone she saw that I knit them for her. My girls and granddaughter are also lovely about the knitted items I've made, but it's my mother I often think about when I pick up my needles. Thank you as always for a lovely podcast. Interestingly enough, my college dorm mate and I had each earned a knitting badge in Brownies: for making a potholder. In our first year as roommates we decided we should take up knitting and asked her mom, Agnus, an avid knitter, to guide us. With input from Agnus, we selected a mitten pattern, knit flat on #7 needles. The mittens did have a few scattered lines of colour work , which Agnus advised would just be a distraction and may possibly cause discouragement on our initial and feeble attempts since our first square project completed 8 years earlier at age 9. So, Agnus wrote out the pattern by hand, with pencil, on the back of a yarn ball label, converting it to a mono colour design. She sent us on our way with needles and suitable yarn from her stash. My roommate and I put our heads together and with joint input, came up with a method to cast on, and away we went. We did call Agnus from the payphone in the hallway to solicit help with picking up stitches for the thumb. It was so exciting to bring our nearly completed projects to Agnus. She taught us the mattress stitch to sew up the sides of the mitten as, they were knitted flat on two needles. Ta-dah! We were so proud. And in love with knitting. That joint adventure was in the early winter of 1976. Recently, a group of my college friends spent the Remembrance Day weekend in a cabin for a get together. It was so wonderful to be immersed in the friendship and love for 3 days. And the assortment of fibre arts was marvellous. Rug hooking, knitting and crochet projects surrounded us. Accompanied by watercolour Christmas card crafting, pencil drawing portraits and of course the cooking of many delicious meals. My roommate and I have been constant friends over the decades and we treasure the opportunities when we can sit together and work on our needle and yarn projects. She now has arthritis in her hands and more often turns to crochet as the hook is less painful to manipulate. Agnus died 5 or so years ago. I still have, and treasure even more now, that yarn ball label with her handwritten instructions on the back. 🧶

Hello, Sherry! As always, your podcast is so inspiring. Your yarn and your makes are stunning! My favorite make ever was a humble granny stripe crocheted blanket. I used a magic knot ball with mini skeins and scraps, and the constant changing of colors was mesmerizing. The repetitive nature of the pattern was so calming and soothing. Every stitch was a joy, and the blanket makes me smile every time I see it. My next one is going to consist of a lot of your yarn, Sherry, as I have a plethora of mini skeins from you. I am very much looking forward to opening my beautiful Sherry Iris adventure calendar and adding to my SI mini skein collection. Happy Holidays!

I love the way you get distracted by birds or Willow😂 it’s like being in the room with you chatting and gives a sense of your daily activity. We have just adopted a black Labradoodle, very different from our cream girl who we lost suddenly last year. (You are right, you don’t get over the loss, it’s always there like a weight but you just move on. She is 12 weeks now and eats everything too.
Your Winter beckons colourway is particularly beautiful and I should love to see a sample knitted up. Is it non superwashed? Have a wonderfilled Christmas . Valerie

Your thinking of Ken Folletts books brought to mind a famous quote from Sigrid Undset: "Though custom change a lot, everything that the times suffer and people's beliefs change, and they think differently about many things. But the hearts of men change absolutely nothing in all days".which I think is very true. I love Ken Folletts books, but as you say they can be tough to listen to sometimes. Give Sigrid Undset a go, you might like her books about Kristin Lavransdatter. As for knitting/crafting memories... most of the women in my family has been knitters, and my great aunt always used to knit socks, and as a child i thought that was a very booiring thing to do. I learned to knit when I was 6 or 7, I knitted clothes for my dolls, all my My Little Ponies, and a couple of swaeters for myself, but not socks. However forty years later, as soon as I have finished a pair of socks I have to cast on some new ones.

I am a 24 hour carer for a very disabled husband, very stressful, so knitting with beautiful Yarns is my essential destress! My favourite garment is one I made up myself. My granite sweater, inspired by large granite boulders on the coasy. Main colour is grey and white marl, with gold and moss green colourwork, inspired by the moss and lichen on the boulders. It reminds me of all the lovely visits we made before hubby was struck down.
Thank you for your lovely gentle podcasts x❤

Another lovely podcast Sherry, thank you! My current WIP is a cosy comfort blanket holding lots of your yarn double and I’m loving that and then I’m torn between starting Kay’s reading shawl or Sandra Paul’s new snowflake design that’s coming with your advent from last year (I’m always a year behind and spend a year admiring the yarn and thinking of the possibilities)! If I do Kay’s though, I’ll be asking for a custom dye of some sparkly yarn though - not sure if you do custom dyes?! 🤷‍♀️😉 Hope the lights switch on was fun?! 🎄🐾
