I see a lot of people asking what class, so I thought I'd throw out some advice for anyone new who is wondering (this guy is maxed out by the way at which point class is irrelevant) There's two kinds of casting. Spells cast with a staff that scale off Int (shown here) and Incantations cast with a seal that scale off Faith (not shown here). Some spells/incantations require both Int and Faith, but most are one or the other. Nothing in this game is class specific, this includes spells and incantations. They just have a minimum stat requirement to use, just like weapons. All you need the required level of Int (or Faith) to cast, and a good enough amount of FP from Mind to keep casting. For spells, if you want to be a pure spellcaster, Astrologer is the best starting point with the highest Int and Mind, or Prisoner who has a mix of Int and Dex for more of a hybrid style. For incantations, you'll want Prophet (highest starting Faith, and good Mind) for a pure caster, or Confessor got a more hybrid style of play with decent starting Faith. There's also some spells and incantations that require both Faith and Int so in some cases you'll need both stats, for this you'll just have to allocate the points you're missing in Faith or Int. Some special weapons work this way too. In terms of spell effectiveness, that relies entirely on your staff/seal scaling for example the golden order seal starts with d scaling in both Int and Faith so it's suitable for a hybrid caster. In reality though, the classes are really only your starting stats, gear and spells (all gear and spells can be acquired in-game so don't worry too much about that), any class can be built into anything you want depending on how you allocate your stats as you level, just some are more focused in a particular direction at the beginning so they make sense if that's what you were going for anyway. Also you can respec your stats later on, but not change class so your starting stats do matter a little here, but later on in the game it's really not that big of a deal unless you're going for a particular levelled min/max pvp build. There's a suitable weapon, spell or incantation choice available for basically any weird combination of stats you could think of, just some of the more obscure ones might take a bit to find. Personally, I'm running a prisoner build because I wanted to focus Int and Dex anyway, but I've also invested a bit into endurance to wear medium armour so I can ditch the starting rags but with enough levels even a class like hero which starts with only 7 Int could become a dedicated caster if they wanted, it just takes a bit longer in the beginning to get there. Same could be said for an astrologer that wants to become a Str based heavy knight with a few spells as backup. It's doable, just takes more levels in that direction.
