PIXEL SLATE REVIEW 1 YEAR LATER: Finally Super Fast! Best Black Friday Deal ($450 for EVERYTHING)
PIXEL SLATE REVIEW 1 YEAR LATER: Finally Super Fast! Other Reviews are WRONG! Best Black Friday Deal
Love the fact you are going back and giving honest reviews for everyday users of these tablets and devices. Other youtubers are too quick to dismiss any product that is not a Mac or massive gaming rig.
As far as the Pixel Slate, this is now an awesome deal! I would splurge a little more for the SP7 bundles being offered this season, but at this price point it’s a great portable device.
Unfortunately it’s a discontinued product so I would be leery of getting it knowing it won’t get any attention in 2 years.
How do you mean? It'll get the usual 5 years of support or whatever it is (I guessed the number) and the same ChromeOS updates all Chromebooks get.
I’m thinking of resale value and support.
It’s a Google product so resale value won’t be much of an issue; look at what Pixelbooks go for on the used market. Even before the $450 BF sale, finding Slates for lower than $350 used was very difficult, so I think that this might retain some decent value as well as the recent announcement that it’ll be supported through software until June 2026.
It's discontinued for very good reasons. I have a slate and it's the worst tablet ever made. Over sensitive touch and bugs galore. I used my iPad 2 mainly because the slate only makes a so so tablet but an okay Chromebook. It always needs a keyboard.
@@bradavon Google states it's until 2026.
Love this video. So many other reviewers will revisit a device 6 months to a year later but no one really did this for the Slate. I picked one up and your video was a big influence. So far I'm loving it. I can browse the web and download all the Android apps I'm familiar with. The deal is just insane. It also introduced me to the pen. It's something I would have never spent money on myself, but I'm glad to have it included for free.
It's a shame the software lag only got fixed 3 months after launch. By then reviewers didn't care and even Google had announced they're pulling out.
I guess that's why you shouldn't release products that aren't finished.
Just picked up the i5 version. Glad someone did an updated review... Can't believe there's a bigger google fanboy than I, lol.
Aye I am a Google fanboi too lol
I just snagged one at the stupid sale price with kb and pen for like 579 for the i5. Are you still enjoying it? How has performance been for you?
How is the Pen performance for drawing? The palm rejection?
@@techorange1141 sadly, pen performance is a majorly mixed bag. There are some apps that work quite well (squid, sometimes Google keep) but others (Incredible) are insanely laggy at times. Like I could have an entire word written before the ink starts drawing out, and the palm rejection is terrible and constantly picks up my palm and flings me too a different part of the page, etc.
I think the reason is that squid is programmed with Active Pen support, so it can ignore any non finger input (can use finger as eraser but it knows that your palm isn't a finger) and those that aren't programmed in this way just provide a horrible experience.
Sadly, I ended up returning mine as the pen input issues were a deal breaker for me.
@@ijmoney4539 : Thanks. So in your opinion, Pixel Slate is Bad in Hardware for Pen or ChromeOS is still not Good for Pen?
I'm glad I came across this video, thanks for posting. I missed out on the black friday deals but there are still heavy discounts out there. I just ordered the i5 version. Another reason to choose this over an Android tablet is updates. Since this is a chromebook it will be supported through 2026.
Google made a HUGE fucking mistake giving MKBHD the celeron model. what were they thinking???? He single handedly put the slate line out of business.
Thanks for this updated review! I'm thinking about switching to this since it's on sale (you get the m3 version, the keyboard, and the pen all for $500!). I'd be switching over from a 2012 MacBook air so I don't know if it can do everything that I do on my Mac but I'm willing to give it a try. Thanks!
I have the I5 model slate and it can do everything your MacBook air can do and more. The Linux apps takes the slate to the next level.
I also have an i5 version of the Slate, and left behind a 2012 MacBook Air 11". You can definitely have one replace the other, but, of course, that ultimately depends on what you use it for. There are some things that I miss about the MacBook (which I still have), and there are some things that the Slate has that the MacBook (of any era) can’t touch. Of course, your mileage may vary.
Thanks for the update! I just ordered the mid tier i5 model! The m3 was out of stock on the Google Store.
I did too. i5 , 8GB, 128, should be excellent. Should be even better than the M3
Same. Can't wait to try it out.
Me too!
I just bought the same one guys just wondering if it's been kind to you
I paid £680 for the gboard and pen included as the m3 was sold out
I just got mine from the sale and I'm really happy with it. The only thing I don't like is the keyboard case, and it is AWFUL. The keyboard itself is fine, but it's useless if you want to type on your lap or use this as a regular tablet. Sadly, there are no other cases available at this time. I hope Incipio brings back the case they originally sold for it. It looked perfect.
The Brydge G Type keyboard is what your looking for.
Yeah $450 for the m3, keyboard, and pen is a fire sale. I had to pick one up myself. You didn't even touch on Linux Apps. I've been using a Samsung Chromebook 3 15" with just a Pentium and it runs Linux apps quite well considering the number of virtualization layers at play. ChromeOS runs Firefox now with ease. There are also good deals on the Samsung Tab S6 right now. $550 with keyboard case is a nice price, not a fire sale though. You basically can buy a Pixel Slate and Tab S6 with pens and keyboards for both for the price of a Surface Pro X without a keyboard or pen!
Quality of the audio: This Ain't It Chief!
ITS FUCKING RAW
SAVAGE
GOTTEM
Lmao
To those who skipped to the comments to find a summary of the video, it is a serious go. As in, GO GET IT NOW KIND SIR.
I ordered the m3 with keyboard and pen for $450 today. I already have a Pixelbook...but I was always intrigued by the slate. For this price it's hard to pass up! My Pixelbook is WORLDS better after 2 years. I'm guessing the Slate is dope now.
And it is great.
I purchased the Core i5 version on a Black Friday sale. $1000 reduced to $650. Personally, I'm interested in a powerful tablet alternative to the venerable Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 or Galaxy Tab S6 (no headphone jack). I could care less about using it as a notebook. I am not interested in the keyboard. I want a power users tablet with a fantastic high PPI screen. I was impressed with the screen. But for some reason the default brightness is so low, you can barely use it. It took several minutes to find the setting.
The reviews are correct! Always listen to MKBHD. Even though Google corrected the initial horrible slow performance, I have never been so frustrated 😤. Chrome OS is a mimick of iOS. Just a grid of icons. I was quite unimpressed. I much prefer Android or Windows 10 on a tablet.
It does not work properly with Nova Launcher. It does not support widgets. The recommended widget workaround is ridiculous. It does not support Roon. It's does not have a headphone jack. The OS experience reminded me of Windows 8 - is it a desktop OS or a tablet OS? Lastly, you can tell there is a severe lack of effort on Google's part to improve the product any further and address consumer concerns outside of the initial slow performance. Google has officially announced that they have given up on tablets and it appears nobody is maintaining the Pixel Slate. It's abandon-ware. I hated using it.
The product is so unpopular, I could not find a single decent case outside of a sleeve or keyboard cover. Not even the reliable MoKo made one. Ridiculous. DO NOT BUY! RMA. Not recommended!
I got an m3 and i5 2 keyboards and 2 pens for $1000... That is freaking insane
I will start saving up to get one
Any performance difference between the m3 and the i5? Benchmarks are close
I picked up the i5 once the deal went live. I was thinking of getting the Pixelbook Go but I’d rather use the tablet in bed instead of a clamshell for UA-cam or any streaming. If the Go was a convertible I might’ve gotten it instead.
Watching this video nearly a year ago prompted me to get the pixel slate. It's very smooth and love I love it. Google improved the device so much from launch. Thanks for your time doing the review!
Thanks for doing an update on the pixel slate. Very few of these videos out there. I just got the m3 deal and it's an amazing tablet! Take the first bunch of reviews lightly, which I understand because it was very buggy. A year later, Google fixed the bugs and the slate is at a great price! Win win!!
I'm very happy with my pixel slate. Great device for me. Glad to see positive review.
This is such a good deal and I can't believe the tablet alone is now almost double the cost.
I agree, all the reviewers were giving it a hard time because they just didn't want to acknowledge the product for what it was and give it time to develop a little more. I've been using chromeOS for over 4 years and within that 4 year time I had so many huge OS changes in that time of ownership. It get major overhauls every 4-6 months reviewers never talk about this because they never use chrome devices for longer than the week that they have time.
to be fair, when you buy a device, it should work fine as intended right away.. its a finished product, not an early access game.
Thanks for the updated review. Other famous reviewers should follow.
I purchased the bundle from Best Buy and I know it's only been two days but in terms of hardware and quality build it's one of the best devices I've purchased in a long time. With the keyboard and pen thrown in, it's a quite a deal. I looked at other chromebooks in this price range and they didn't have the same build quality and solid feel. The display is beautiful and I really like typing on the Google keyboard despite the fact it's unsteady when using on your lap. It works great on my desk which is where I plan to use it primarily. Thanks for this great follow-up review.
Literally hit the buy button today for the M3 version, with pen , and keyboard for $499. My Acer Chromebook 15 has been amazing with it's paltry 4GB of ram. I can only imagine what the experience will be when I receive it Friday (expedited shipping).
Passing the Acer down to my nephew that lives with me, and the chromebook he now has I'm passing to my niece for her Roblox addiction.
Received a Tab S6 LTE a week ago, and look forward to using both of the devices as replacements for my Acer, ipad Pro 10.5, Surface Go , and Macbook Air 2013. Selling all of those devices, because I've realized I'm happier with Chrome OS and Galaxy devices.
Great review!
Would it be better to get a refurbished slate and keyboard or a refurbished pixelbook?
Twospoopy4Yee slate is better than the book
They should’ve waited and released it like this.
With their name, we might’ve been able to get another good option for a tablet
Sean Sheffer - defender of misunderstood tablets 🥳.
j/k, keep up the good work Sean!
That's me! Haha I can't help myself - and now I have too many tablets lol
So true. He bothers to find out what they do well instead of solely concentrating on what they don't. The tech community is entirely to kind on the areas the iPad is shit. You've only just been able to plug in a thumb drive. There's still no mouse support.
The Chrome OS is at v81 with greatly improved tablet interface as of April 2020. I also prefer the bridge pro over the keyboard folio, for lappability and use in bed. 😅👍
IN 2020 ITS GET EVEN BETTER ON THAT TABLET OMG
Good thing I waited. Ordered the i5 version with Brydge keyboard.
I head great things about the Brydge Keyboard and the trackpad - let me know how you like it!
The official keyboard was a major complaint point. Google would've fixed it though with the next irritation. I'd get the Brydge keyboard too.
Same!
@@SeanSheffer I know it's months later but the Google keyboard is far superior. I absolutely love it. No you can't use it on your lap. The trackpad is awesome. The keys are great. The any angle screen is great.
Good video, however to everyone blaming other reviewers for forgetting about this device, realistically you should blame google for being late with fixing issues. Why release something when its not a good experience yet
I am definitely considering picking this up at Best buy! I think the 450 price, it is most definitely a bargain. Thank you for the updated review!
You keep referencing Marques' review of the slate, like he was wrong. He wasn't. They sent him a product that was promised to be a rival against the ipad pro. Instead they gave him a product that had unbearably lag, and a terrible user experience. He also said that it was a SOFTWARE problem! Not the celeron. Yes, they may have fixed most of the problem, but you also said they are ditching the slate, and focusing on other projects, so my take on that statement is that anyone who has purchased this product is left dead in the water with no more updates. I couldn't believe that google actually released something that worked like this out of the box. But then again, look at the pixel xl? Or youtube rewind...
Got my eyes on this package for boxing day in Canada. Gonna be perfect for stadia at work!
A shame that I could not find a way to order the slate where I live.Kinnd of just gave up and bought an Acer chromebook tab 10. Quite happy with it tbh
Thanks, I actually think this is the device that the surface pro x actually completed with. This makes the most sense!
Yep. There use cases are similar. The fact the iPad is shit terible laptop is lost on people. Both Surface and the Pixel Slate are excellent laptops and good tablets.
Thank you for doing this. This thing is BEAUTIFUL and all of the complaints are with software which obviously can be patched. The M3 performance will work for most people. I just picked it up, that deal is incredible.
Yeah this model has been pretty good for me so far. I'm a power user so the battery doesn't last as long as it should but the performance is pretty good. There isn't a lot of attention online apart from largely negative reviews from a year ago. Android apps are hit or miss but the linux vm is pretty sweet.
Hey there, could I use this to teach English online? As I need a laptop to run the program from my browser, I can't teach from my iPad.
Jacob, if your language program can run on a browser on a laptop or desktop, you should be able to do so easily on the Slate. Its browser is a full desktop version of Chrome, not a mobile version, so you should be okay. I’m a big Apple guy, but I’ve had the i5 version of the Slate for eight months now, and I’ve been impressed with its capabilities. One point, however: if you’re teaching online and need to use the camera, be aware that it is very mediocre (one of my few complaints about the Slate).
Awesome , thanks for the update. I will be picking it up today.
Android apps that don't scale to full screen can usually be fixed by putting them in a window and maximising again or in a window and manually resize the window. A handful don't scale but most do.
Thanks for doing a recent review. I just got the Pixel Slate and it's awesome. None of the UA-cam reviews are helpful.
I have wanted this! I felt a review in 2020 was needed. So m3 would be OK?
Wish I had seen this sooner. They're all sold out of the m3 version.
Same boat here :(
In and out of stock just keep an eye on it! I picked one up great purchase!
bestbuy is selling the core M3 version with they keyboard and pen for $449 still and its in stock!

Good luck!
Best buy and Amazon sell them with the keyboard and pen!

How about the Pen for drawing? And the Palm rejection is good?
I use the Google Pixelbook Pen on my i5 Slate and have had no issues. I mostly use it with Squid app and Google Keep, and I like it better than the Apple Pen on my iPad Air.
@@The_Silver_Fox : Wow! Can you make a Video for that?
Which keyboard should I go for with the bundle? Please help!!
10:50 camera is still running. wtf
Chrome OS is more powerful than people think.
It seems that Google did not understand that its rival's audience uses a tablet normally that has the option of using a keyboard and pen. They insist on making a notebook when Apple has already put applications for various functions without losing its personality.
I can't believe it's not buttery smooth
I'm interested in purchasing a Pixel Slate, but I'm not sure if it's buttery smooth.
I mean unbox therapy and mkbhd reviews had date stamps. Don’t have to keep referencing there’s, which was valid at the time.
Questionable use of "buttery smooth"
Thank you. Just what I needed to see
You test multitasking opening and closing one and the same app?
Bruh Google selling it for $499 with free keyboard and pen!
thanks im getting the version one up from this
Can you still get this anywhere for this price?
My Pixel slate has been cycling between red, green, yellow and blue I'm not able to get pass this loop hopefully someone can help me .
can you use connect a mouse to it?
Yes
Best Buy has Surface Pro 7 bundle right now. i5 10th gen, 8GB ram, 256GB ssd, type cover and pen... $999.
Microcenter $799
They using it as tablet experience, detach the keyboard and use the full gesture and feel the lag ma dude
you mention great high res display but netflix for instance does not even support above 1080p. you sure disney plays at 1440p or 2160p? i doubt it. this device also does not support hevc/h265 hardware decoding.
yep just got one and the lack of those hardware decoding really sucked for me
Nobody can fault reviewers and customers from not going back to check this thing out. Google did a HORRIBLE job by sending out crappy Celeron units and even the reviewers who went out and got the more powerful versions still had a crappy experience. It's not the job of the consumers and reviewers to follow up and make sure a product doesn't suck. Google has one chance and they blew it.
Would you recommend this for school?
Hey I wanna ask is it just for casual uses like android gaming or streaming and reading comic basically I just want to use it primarily as android tablet no editing or drawing
And seller in my country sell it for 293 usd only
Great review! I like that you revisited this tablet. You're gonna have to shave your head eventually though buddy.
This is the best and most relevant review I've seen so far. I just bought the Pixel Slate i7 version with 16 Gigs of RAM for $679. Is that a good deal?
i think that configurationaunched at over 1000 dollars so yes
This a great video! Love your review you deserve more subs!
Should I get this or the Samsung S5e?
Of course this. No comparison
Is that the m3 versión?
I don't care how much they are now, for a computer which was designed as a premium product, buttery smooth should be by default when the machine came out in day 1. Google should blame no body except itself, especially consider how much they worth now.
those review when it first release are not wrong. reviewers need to review what we get them on sale not what we are promised in the future.
can it download kinemaster please answer
To bad, can’t find that deal anymore. $500 for just the slate alone. 😂
I really thinking of buying this one.. Thank you for the good review..
3:20 'buttery smooth' pulls down a window at like 2 FPS. facepalm
I bought and returned this two weeks ago. It was so stuttery I was shocked
I am considering buying the pixel slate and thank you so much for your up to date review. and could you please tell us more about the pixel book pen since it is not free in UK.
The secret is out now , the prices are going back up
Every single swipe gesture you did was followed by a laggy as shit animation with you saying ‘buttery smooth’. WTF. Are we watching the same video?
Why anyone should listen to mkbh guy , it’s your personal preference if you want it . I enjoy mine , I prefer it over the iPad Pro 2018
they should continue this tablet back
great review, can you run the app invoice2go
i dont understand is google dumb
why waste such a great product
But is it it now?
recent apps animation is still lag and awful to me
Internet reviewers literally killed this product 😡. Because they reviewed it like they reviewed the Surface Pro X. It doesn't run full Photoshop well . It's a fail. Morons. The keyboard is terrible but this would've been fixed with the replacement. The Slate always was decent.
I've never paid attention to the youtube hate. I bought the Pixelbook on day one...and still love it. I grabbed this to have a second media screen. Can't wait!
You say the animations are buttery smooth, have you SEEN the iPad pro?! It's in a league of its own. Even your down swipe drops frames to about 15 it looks. Not good.
64gb space? $500 64gb space? NO SD SLOT at all.
Don't waste the money on that thing. Buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 instead. Its currently discounted by $100 off. Great 2 in 1.
Bloatware bloatware bloatware
MKBHD has the power to kill a product
pixel slate or surface pro x?
It's a $450 device vs a $1,200 one with keyboard and pen. The price difference is so huge you can even compare them.
@@Tiralful old post, but FYI. I went with m3 pixel slate. I love it BUT given hindsight I would buy the surface Pro X for that price difference hands down.
The form factor is amazing. I didn't realize how much I hate not having the touch pen tablet keyboard interface in other devices. But Chrome OS is a complete waste. It's like the worst of all worlds.
Awrsome review man!
Invest in a mic, dude. Volume all the way up.. still kinda quiet lol
That is not buttery smooth
I can't believe it's not buttery smooth.
@@jtstevenson81 I laughed out loud at work when I read this and everyone looked at my like wtflip 🤣
I’m glad Google fixed the Pixel Slate, but I’ll stick with my iPad Pro, especially since iPadOS is still a better operating system than ChromeOS for my use cases. I wish Google still makes tablets so the iPad has more competition. Only Samsung is truly competing against Apple in the tablet market with the Tab S6. The Surface Pro is, technically, a tablet that competes against the iPad, but it’s more of a laptop because you need the keyboard to make it useful most of the time.
you need a better mic my guy...
I'm seeing this, and I still wouldn't call it buttery smooth, although it isn't as bad as a year ago.
I still prefer my iPad Pro 2017
I edit 4k videos with no clue at all. It's just fantastic
I will never buy anything Microsoft again ! Apple has great running products because they control production and iOS but, their software is limiting for what I would use a tablet for .
I'll keep my GPS and live with the glitches until Google fixes them all . I would never trust Microsoft to fix anything !
The fact that Google stoped making tablets to consentrate on their software is the right move .
Thanks for telling the truth !!
Excellent review
