*Lenovo IdeaTab A8 & A10 Review* goo.gl/Vfuuhj _The Lenovo IdeaTab A8 and A10 aren’t perfect, but at a budget price you can’t expect them to be. What they are though, are tablets that simply get the job done without breaking the bank, and at the end of the day that is what really matters most._ By *****
Graydon Osborne Yea really, I understand they want to make it affordable, but they have to be realistic also, what the hell is 1gb of ram, its almost an insult especially for a tablet
Just want to say thank you!! Finally a good review on this product that covered the things I wanted to see. I rarely ever leave comments but I have been searching for far too long for a video review with good substance. Wanted to let you know how good of a job you are doing. :-)
proud owner of the A8. it's a good overall tablet. it's not performance driven for games but honestly, if you want to play high intensity video games get a console. lol i mainly use it to check my email, watch videos and read books
Though there is no APP drawer, we can make folders to dump everything into. The manual doesn't actually have any info on this. I discovered it accidentally on my own. Simply hold down an APP and drag it over another and release and the two APP's will be put into a folder. Open the folder to edit a name if you wish. I can't figure out how to change/edit the, "Owner" button in the right shutter menu. When we click on it, it reports, "No such Contact exists"... hmmm Also this A8-50 model has 4 versions and each have slight hardware changes between them all. The one I have on the box it shows two speakers and it even has the SIM and microSD image printed on the door flap, but when I opened the box. As it turns out the one I got only has 1 speaker and no SIM card slot. So the Dolby virtual sound setting can't be turned on without plugging in headphones or connecting a Bluetooth headset. The virtualization setting is minimal and not like an annoying echo. On some songs it was barely noticeable. Overall I am still happy with this purchase... I got it for $90 CAD.
Nice review thanks. As well as general tablet use I'd like to use it for tethering to my dslr in the studio. Would you say this is a good tablet for this, please?
Yes I have the A8-50 which I use the OTG capability to my Fujifilm HS50EXR camera which is a hybrid camera with manual control and even though it has a digital eyepiece and rotating 3" display I still like using the tablet to give myself an even bigger display...
I've owned it for a month and my overall experience is a pleasure. For those who just want something portable to watch movies, check email, UA-cam and play simple android games it's a VFM choice.
These are the first MediaTek things that I don't hate by the look of it, because the homescreens are not laggy. Yes, MediaTek 8 core chips also can't make scrolling smooth. So while I wouldn't buy this thing ever, because I'm a fan of custom ROMs, I would say it's OK for a person who has no idea what Android is.
I read somewhere that the A10-70 does not work with ChromeCast. Only Miracast. But Ive also seen that it does work with ChromeCast. Can you confirm either way? It is a deal breaker as i would use it for a media hub.
JoyfullJuneBug I'm using it right now! I love it. If you are using it as a comic resader you will not be disappointed. The pixels are great for reading comics. I have Comixology and it is clear and smooth. I recommend it highly. Do get an SD card since there is only 12 gig memory. Video is pixelated and just OK. I'd get it. I got mine on Amazon, and got a case for about $8. I hope this helps.
The Dell venue 8 feels like a better value with 2gb of ram. It's on sale right now at 159.99. All I like about the lenovo a8 is the front facing speaker.
got this just paid £68 in cash converters for 16 gig version I think its good sounds 9/10 and battery is excellent but is there much difference between this and the later version the A8 2 and also does the later version run lollipop cos this is kitkat and won't be updated to lollipop
Yes to OTG devices, and Yes to HDMI output through the micro USB port. I've used keyboards, mice, flash sticks and even an LED scope on the tablet and it all works fine. The HDMI capability... kinda pointless as the tablet only outputs 720p.
Nice to see a manufacturer putting front facing speaker on a tablet, but that's about it. MediaTek processors, 1 GB of RAM, and 720p display?!?!? Come on Lenovo!!! The Acer Iconia Tab 8 has an 1080p display, that new Intel processor, and probably priced at $199 with anti-fingerprint coating on the display and an aluminum material.
Speaking as a professional photographer the amount of mp in a camera doesn't matter much. It depends on the shooter. I can get just as great images on my 4 mp consumer camera as my 14 mp dslr camera.
I have the A8 but it's running Jelly Bean not kit kat. But a review on bestbuy.com said he upgraded it to kitkat. Can anyone direct me to an tutorial type website? First tablet really, the things I don't like I think are fixable ie:keyboard setup and the side menu that comes on. Please help
6:03 Who needs an APP drawer? Just make a folder and dump everything into it. SMH some people complain about the simplest of things we can easily solve on our own. Plus you either don't know about this tablet enough to be reviewing it, or you're an idiot when it comes to Android devices. I'm guessing the former... because what did you think that third home icon was for? The first is the Back icon, followed by the Home button and the third... never tried it eh? Thats the multi screen or history button which allows us to switch between multiple APPs and allows multi-tasking... Honestly do you really know about Android devices or you some guy reading a script and is soo oblivious to what Android can do, you probably own and prefer an iPhone... I have 4 folders on my A8-50 desktop. One for messaging and social media, another for Google APPS, one for Tools I use frequently and a folder for everything else. Or simply make one single folder and dump EVERYTHING into it... There you go you just made yourself an APP drawer... And YES we can drag the folders into the home menu area so it becomes the APP drawer you seem to be soo fond of. What you failed to mention is the Bluetooth 4.0 capability and the built-in active GPS chip which does not require WiFi to work. Both the A8 and A10 will actively search for a satellite and log in which it uses for its own built in map function which works like a Garmin device with speech for searching and announcing turns and routes. The A8 has three models, the A8-50, A5500 and the A80F. The difference is the A8-50 (as shown in this video) only has a single speaker on the front and only WiFi a/b/g capabilities. The A5500 has two stereo speakers and when using the Dolby control APP, the surround sound virtualization option can be accessed. In the A8-50 it won't activate if the single speaker is the output source, but it will when headphones or Bluetooth devices are connected. The last model, the A80F is harder to find as it has 3G capabilities but the WiFi is b/g/N plus dual speakers. Also maybe there is a difference for models purchased in Canada and the USA because my battery (Canada) was a 6000 mAh battery which I have since replaced with a 3rd party 6800 mAh one when the original one died. It is a mid range tablet so why you complaining it can't keep up with your high end game playing... I works perfect for my needs and I don't game, but I do use the Bluetooth with the Digital Dolby chip enhancements to as an MP3 device when I'm out and about. Sure beats draining my phone for music. I paired a set of Bluedio HT Turbine Hurricane headphones (Bluetooth 4.1). Plus I can connect both my phone, headset and speakers to the tablet at the same time. I use the mobile hotspot on my phone to give the tablet Wifi, and to pause the music when a call comes through. The Bluedio (Bluetooth headset) announces a call is coming in and allows the headphones to pause (not mute) the playback until the call is done. The tablet claims it can connect to 4 devices through Bluetooth at the same time, but I only have 3 devices so couldn't test that part yet. Like most stock music players, the Lenovo one is pretty basic and doesn't have any advance features so I use a 3rd party player called, "Black Player", an Ad Free - free mp3 music player with advanced capabilities including playlists and downloading missing iD3 tag info when connected to the net.
I don't get why people keep saying the Nexus 7 is better in value... the only thing it has better than the A8/10 is it has WiFi b/g/N, whereas only the A8F model has the WiFi b/g/N plus 3G which the Nexus does not have. Nexus main camera is only 1.2M front facing camera only. The Lenovo's have both a back and front camera. The front one is 2M but the back one is 5M. The Nexus is a 1.2Ghz Quad core, the Lenovo a 1.3Ghz Quad core, both are only a 1G RAM tablet. The Nexus is a 7" tablet, while the Lenovo A8-50 is an 8" tablet. The Lenovo has an FM radio with an FM radio APP... Nexus doesn't have this at all. Nexus is Bluetooth 3.0 while Lenovo is Bluetooth 4.0 Did I mention, the Lenovo has A-GPS the Nexus doesn't even have a WiFi based GPS... The Lenovo doesn't require WiFi or data to use it's built in GPS chip. It's built in native map APP is basically turning the tablet into a Garmin device with speech turn by turn directions. Nexus doesn't even have this. So how is the Nexus a better value... ???
Games on android or any mobile device suck balls. 99.9% of games are pay to play filled with pay walls and advertising. U cant buy them for good to enjoy anything. I lost hope that this trend of milking ppl will change.

1GB of ram... no thanks
Graydon Osborne these arent made for power users, its basically a media player and light gaming 1gb is all you need
Graydon Osborne Yea really, I understand they want to make it affordable, but they have to be realistic also, what the hell is 1gb of ram, its almost an insult especially for a tablet
Tor Guy Yep I agree. Most cell phone have twice if not three times that amount.... They could add another gig for not that much more.
Just want to say thank you!! Finally a good review on this product that covered the things I wanted to see. I rarely ever leave comments but I have been searching for far too long for a video review with good substance. Wanted to let you know how good of a job you are doing. :-)
I like how you split your work - Josh reviews the high end stuff and you the low-to-mid. And you are getting better! Great job.
proud owner of the A8. it's a good overall tablet. it's not performance driven for games but honestly, if you want to play high intensity video games get a console. lol i mainly use it to check my email, watch videos and read books
+Erik Gil so is there an update from android 4.2.2. to 4.4.4.?please answer me soon i need to know!!!!thank you so much!!!!

+jimmyking92 wich model did you buy ? I want the 8 inch version , does it has hdmi and 3G sim capability ?
tecknos africa Ι bought the Lenovo IdeaPad A8-50. It's 8 inch, has 3G sim capability but no HDMI.
thankx for the review. Can they run a full 720p movie without any stutter? what about a 1080p?
Guessing the next line is the B8 and B10. What are they going to do when they get to V8 and V10 with copyright issues?
These are the first MediaTek things that I don't hate by the look of it, because the homescreens are not laggy. Yes, MediaTek 8 core chips also can't make scrolling smooth.

very affordable and good review.5 star

Thank you!
Just bought the A8 from office depot for 109.99 after coupon. Seems like a good deal to me.
I read somewhere that the A10-70 does not work with ChromeCast. Only Miracast. But Ive also seen that it does work with ChromeCast. Can you confirm either way? It is a deal breaker as i would use it for a media hub.
do you get any problem with the SD card such as need to format or running apps of the SD card
Nothing can beat Nexus 7 2013 in value.
his voice is much like Marques Brownlee (MKBHD)
is this tablet better than a 2nd/3rd gen iPad?
hi
i saw lenovo a7600 tablet and it is 10inch does that mean that a10 is a7600 or is it another name for another type of tablet ?
thanx
Great review, I just ordered the A10 simply to read digital comics. For the price I could not pass up a 10" tablet to read comics.
Did you ever get one? I want one for my comics and manga too. I'm wondering if the pixelate or not?
JoyfullJuneBug I'm using it right now! I love it. If you are using it as a comic resader you will not be disappointed. The pixels are great for reading comics. I have Comixology and it is clear and smooth. I recommend it highly. Do get an SD card since there is only 12 gig memory. Video is pixelated and just OK. I'd get it. I got mine on Amazon, and got a case for about $8. I hope this helps.
Michael Perkins Yeah it does help, I'm going to grab one on Black Friday Thanks also for the comixology tip (b ^_^)b
The Dell venue 8 feels like a better value with 2gb of ram. It's on sale right now at 159.99. All I like about the lenovo a8 is the front facing speaker.
How do you arrange the apps in alphabetic order?
Can you play telltale games smoothly with the A8?
Hey, i have some issues with this tablet. Everytime i call, or someone is calling, this tablet's lcd shuts down. Please help.
got this just paid £68 in cash converters for 16 gig version I think its good sounds 9/10 and battery is excellent but is there much difference between this and the later version the A8 2 and also does the later version run
lollipop cos this is kitkat and won't be updated to lollipop
Does this tablet support USB OTG or USB to HDMI?
Yes to OTG devices, and Yes to HDMI output through the micro USB port. I've used keyboards, mice, flash sticks and even an LED scope on the tablet and it all works fine. The HDMI capability... kinda pointless as the tablet only outputs 720p.
WHATS A GOOD CHEAP TAB WITH VERY LIMITED LAG?
how to expand the Tab a8 with microSD if this android version don't support? thanks
8 inch tablets are perfect to carry around I don't care for smaller tablets

is that a vase or a nice green bong
Clicked on this video thinking they might actually have an AMD A8 and A10 Processor, wow wouldn't that be a day...
Speaking as a professional photographer the amount of mp in a camera doesn't matter much. It depends on the shooter. I can get just as great images on my 4 mp consumer camera as my 14 mp dslr camera.
And that once a device is a few months old, it's worthless and needs instant replacement. I can't stand that.
Can you take screenshots with the A10 version?
yes

I would find the extra money and get the Nexus 7.
