  • Modern maximalist designer Philip Mitchell reveals his talent for blending collections, family heirlooms, contemporary art, and accessories in visually creative environments that are brimming with personality, color, authenticity, and warmth.

The Tartan Topiary is supported by its viewers, thank you. A purchase using the link above will help in our efforts to continue providing book reviews.
The elegant, clean classicism of Philip Mitchell’s style is on full display in these homes, where he masterfully incorporates a wide-ranging mix of antiques, vintage collectibles, and contemporary pieces-everything from inherited furniture collections to modern art-in rooms that are filled with memories and warmth. As a master of what he calls modern maximalism, Mitchell embraces the challenge of taking wonderful things that a homeowner already has and making more of them. Once Mitchell has established a connecting thread among a variety of disparate pieces-whether through finish, material, scale, color, texture, or line-he starts the process of building the relationships that bring a space to life.
Brilliant photographs take readers on in-depth tours of nine homes, ranging from an elegant Upper East Side pied-à-terre to a classic cottage on the water in Nova Scotia. Mitchell’s personal narrative in elegant text enlightens, while his takeaways accompanying each home help readers understand how to blend new and old, mix colors and patterns, and fill a home with an eclectic mix that is truly their own.
Also, join me at the end of the review to see what I purchased at my local historic preservation salvage shop. It's almost 300 years old!

I like the antelope print as the room already has a lot of tartan and it's a modern neutral, which is nice contrast to the antique frame, as well as complimenting the actual animals in the room. I'm sure I heard one designer say that every room should have something in animal print.

I stumbled upon your channel just a few days ago, and have found myself binge watching here and there, gathering so much inspiration, which has led to much fiddle faddling of my own cherished treasures. I simply love your channel! XO PS- I vote for the chair upholstery with your monogram. The Monogram would definitely accent the Tartan plaid... Tartan Plaids were a form of "monograms" for each Family Clan in Ireland and Scotland... Everyone KNEW what Family u were from just by looking at Ur Plaid.... Thts the Story Ur foyer evokes...
Every room should tell a "story" no matter how small....

I just discovered your channel. How fun to have your viewers participate in your chair upholstery. I really love how Phillip Mitchell creates a collage with the various collections of wall art. I particularly love the cover of his book with the punches of red on the large painting balanced by the red sconces on either side of the fireplace. The room has so many different colors but it pulls together beautifully.

I LOVE the 18th century Irish Chippendale chair! And I am just now seeing this video that was put out 8 months ago: but I think an antelope print or even the other more subtle animal print fabric---with a monagram in a font that resembles the design in the backsplat---might just look FABULOUS! I saw people throwing away Queen Ann Chairs today. Maybe someone died and things were not valued? The chair can have a monogram ergonomic pillow (rectangle). The seat can be antelope. I would consider a tartan difficult to be placed in every room when needed. A tartan seat cloth draping the seat (I have a dark cat) is removable. A monogram can be stained! One never knows when an ulcer will erupt like in downton abbey. My Spellcheck never watched that show.
