Slim Aarons would definitely photograph your beautiful pool. Your attention to detail is amazing. You and your husband designed such a peaceful, elegant outdoor oasis. I love your review of the book. Scott’s landscape designs are extraordinary. Thank you Mary for another wonderful episode and making it possible for all of us to take a peak beyond the open garden gate.
Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment. That would be a great UA-cam Channel..."Beyond The Garden Gate". Also, I don't know if you are an Alfred Hitchcock fan but, in his movie, "Rear Window"- Jimmy Stewart's character was patterned after Slim Aarons. 🎥🎬
@@thetartantopiary Gosh, I didn’t know that and I am a big Hitchcock fan. Thank you Mary. I am going to watch “ Rear Window” again. Thank you for your fabulous channel and your wealth of knowledge. 💕Karen
This post is a testament to your vision, good taste and keen awareness that water and nature can transform a home into a sublime sanctuary. Scott Shrader would be impressed! Beautifully done!
Beautiful! Thank you!! 7 years ago, when I was 62, I finally got the pool I wanted for a lifetime. I had taught swimming for 20 years of my life, was an avid swimmer and rescue swimmer. We live in Maine and back up to deep woods and marsh beyond. I am so glad we finally did this. Your pool is spectacular and your surrounding gardens are too. I am sure you will be delighted for many years to come.
We haven’t been on vacations since 2003! We have no children, our parents have died, and our siblings and their children never visit. I would be happy with an endless pool, a walk in tub, and tile in the house on the floor. Saltwater sounds so healing! I watched this twice and my husband watched the pool install part with me later!
@@thetartantopiary For you to fulfill a dream is helpful to people who stopped dreaming. WE went through infertility and had 5 miscarriages., and 13 surgeries. We never lost our home, which happened to millions of Americans. We need to dream, and we need to have our feet on the ground with gratitude. There is no judgement. Mary, I am hoping life can get better, and I am thankful you have a beautiful pool, home, family and you are doing well when some people struggle. Bob and I are no longer in credit card debt. Whether we can save for a pool, come what may, is a dream that gives me a smile. I have a cousin with an endless pool and they enjoy it so much with her kids. Your video made me HAPPY. You are doing well.

There are pillows from old shirts that one can hug. I used to be a chaplain. I am retired and older now. I can see the pool in the back yard next to a gazebo. Mary gave me something pretty to imagine. I see a pool in the back yard now. It isn't there yet, but it may come about soon.
Mary, I love the design and wide steps into your pool and the use of salt water. Wishing you and your family many happy years in this gorgeous backyard retreat,
Hello Mary, I too got the willies watching the pool go over your house!!! LOL!! However, I must say everything turned out beautifully!!! I love it! Have a great day! Hugs! :)
Your yard is lovely! You are right, your pool looks like it has always been there. Your research paid off. We enjoy our pool...but, I cheated. When we moved into our home 20 plus years ago ( in NC as well) our 3 sons were very young. I didn't have the time or inclination to care for a pool so we moved to a neighborhood with a community pool. Obviously, there isn't the privacy of a backyard pool but it has worked well for us. I continue to use it almost daily in summer. Thanks for sharing your home. Always enjoy your reviews!
Yes- that was a smart decision. There is something about spending time by the water, even for a few moments, that calms and relaxes the spirit. Community pools are a wonderful thing. When I lived in Raleigh, we visited our community pool daily in the summer! 💦
As I was gathering the pictures for this video, I had forgotten how much of the yard had to be totally demolished for the pool to be installed. With a little care, it's amazing how nature can rebound. ❤️
Beautiful oasis !!! Enjoy it in good health. Let us know when your book comes out. Is not to late to go on your trip to Scotland. I love the striped cabana:)
Mary, I ordered all three books you recommended that helped you in planning your pool. Amazon will deliver in a few days. I’m so excited to get started. Thank you again. Linda from Pensacola Fl
Mary, I’ve enjoyed all your book reviews and have bought several after viewing your channel. Being from CA, I like to listen to your beautiful southern accent as you share so peacefully and personally your life and books reviews! Thank you!
I enjoyed this so much. I just love gardens. It was interesting to hear about the installation of your pool. It turned out beautiful and what a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the peacefulness
I love Slim Aaron’s books …. I do have the one in the photo. What an amazing photographer I agree he would definitely photograph your pool area❤ thank you for the wonderful shots of your house and review of books,Susan
Thank you, Susan. That book is over the top fabulous. Susanna Salk also has a book, although it's several years old, but it is of the same genre and includes some of Slim Aarons' photos. It's called "Privilege" and I think you might enjoy it. I bought a used copy last year. It's out of print, but not too difficult to find.
Wow, thank you for that beautiful story of your pool. I was not expecting that. I have spent most of the day digging out the invasive plant Goutweed and was looking for some inspiring garden images and came across your video. How relaxing. Your pool is beautiful. I don’t think I could’ve stayed to watch the pool be put in. I was nervous just listening to you tell the story. So glad everything worked out.
You are a girl after my own heart. I began watching UA-cam for garden inspiration a few years ago. I have several channel suggestions if you need any. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Although many of my book reviews are interiors I do have several garden book reviews that you might enjoy. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@thetartantopiary I love your style and yes, would like to hear your recommendations. Once goutweed is extricated, I am going for a more formal front yard with shrubbery. Think French style. I’m pulling up my rosebushes and putting down greenery, shrubs, topiary, etc. I am creating the garden in my mind as I dig out the goutweed and it’s rhizomes so carefully to get all the pieces of roots.
Thank you, as always, for this beautiful respite from the snow and albeit without the pool, looking forward to my garden. Keep them coming and I truly enjoy your tours after the books. 🤗
Thank you for the thoughtful comment. While we don't have snow- it will still be several more months before I get in the water. We are expecting freezing temps later this week! In the southern US March and April are like weather roller coasters!
Your landscaping is just beautiful! Are those evergreen trees aborvitae? This space looks so serene. I believe it would be hard to move from that spot!
Yes, Emerald Green Arborvitae "Thuja occidentalis" to be exact! I only know that because last year our house was on a garden tour in which all of the plants had to be tagged with their scientific names. I love those trees!
At our last house we had an above ground pool. Here we do not. If I could copy yours, I would do so in a heartbeat, but I remember the maintenance. *sigh*
That is one reason we opted for the saltwater pool. We don't have to winterize the pool in our location, so adding salt, emptying filters and the occasional vacuum is all we've had to do so far...emphasis on "so far".

Such a beautiful relaxing retreat in your own backyard! Thank you for allowing us into your personal space. I enjoyed every minute 😊
Thank you, we do enjoy it. It was an expense that we did not take lightly, but I'm glad we did it.

A pool was a major expense for us and one we did not take lightly. We saved and planned for this installation quite a while. I am so glad we did it.
