Suggestion.... make your curtains wider than the window. That way the blackout curtains can capture more of the light from the window making your room darker.
Yes, another snoopy, nosy, unsolicited piece of advice: You have an awesome carpenter .... get him to make you some wooden outside shutters! They would also add some "decoration" to the house as well. Or, you could go online and learn to make some yourself! There are also inside shutters you could build.
Love the channell. Last week I was sat in my local pub's beer garden with my dog talking to a family of Danish tourists (who also had a dog). I told them I subscribe to a youtube channel by a Swedish lady who has a Danish boyfriend who lives on Svalbard. One of the daughters instantly said Cecilia? We spent the next 10 minutes talking about Grim. Keep up the great work of international relations 😂.
Hi Cecilia! I'm an interior designer and, when I design hotels or Airbnb without what we call in Spain "persianas", what I do is to put curtains from wall to wall, to blocked also the light that is reflected on the wall. That makes the room way darker than just covering the window :)
The person who starts shipping the roller shutters to Svalbard will make a fortune! I can’t believe no one has come up with this idea yet. They are easy to install by non-professionals. You just take the measurements of your windows and they will make you a custom roller shutter and send it to you. You just mount it on your window. There are countless tutorials on youtube. Just to get them from the mainland somehow. They are also insulated so they would also be useful in winter and during storms.

Soon the sun will set, and you'll all be put out of your misery. In Ireland, it's now getting dark at 10pm, and it's properly dark by 10.30pm. So the nights are closing in, and soon they'll be for you too. Best wishes !
Hi Cecilia! I live in Tromsø and as a French man, it was hard at the beginning but we bought some blinds that totally block the light in the living room and the bedroom. We close them around 21:30 and turn on the lights! And it works like magic!!! I highly recommend you to invest in good shades, it’ll change your life in the summer!!! Lykke til ❤
I'm in Ireland and I find the really long summer twilight to be difficult at times. Recently I got up to see the stars at 2am and it was still bright in the area where the sun had set (in Galway region so not the top of Ireland). I can only imagine the struggle of 24 hours daylight. Adore your videos and Grim!
I'm in north west Sligo. In late june, it dosnt start getting dark here until after 11.30pm and starts getting bright again at around 2.30am. Fully daylight again by 4am. Northern sky does not get fully dark at all. Thank God for black out curtains.
oh gosh I wouldn't sleep. I went to Hammersmith in Norway many years ago for the midnight sun and I found it impossible to sleep. I understand why Cecilia prefers polar nights.
Yesss! They are amazing! They make your room sooo dark it is impossible to tell what time of the day it is outside! My daughter's room (I sleep in here then she is travelling and babysit/sleep with her dog in here) I don't know what time it is, because the sun doesn't wake me up! Lol! ( : My bedroom doesn't have black out curtains. ) :
If nobody sells then, can't they ship them from mainland like they do other things, and install them themselves? Christopher is quite handy with things like that
@@sandimcintyre1574 they need the european style outside rolling shutters. They block 100% of light. Useful to roll them down in the evening and pretend it's dark, so not just for sleeping but relaxing in the evening
I don't understand the black out curtain situation. I live in Texas where the sun is very intense. The blackout curtains I have in my bedroom are nothing fancy or expensive. I bought them at Walmart! Years ago. When they are closed....my bedroom is as dark as a tomb.
@@margietucker1719 exactly. My daughter has blackout curtains and they work great. They keep her room very dark until she opens them up. Not sure why Cecelia doesn't get those, they are really inexpensive.
Your struggle with the constant light makes me realize that falling asleep (in most of the world) happens gradually, beginning when the sun starts to set. We're not programmed to suddenly put a cover over our eyes and boop! fall asleep. I experienced midnight sun in Sweden as a teenager. At first you think it's cool and interesting but that quickly wears off. 😁
Im always in a quandary about Svalbard. The polar day would drive me mad in white linen! I love the idea of polar night! But I'd almost take the 24-hour sun for the temperature! 50° !?!? Omg. This week, we hit 108° F with humidity in the 80% - 90%! That's 42.2°C!!! I watch your videos right now to say sane until autumn and winter! Love ya, Grimm!
17:39 try to see if you can find a thermal insulating curtains that can go behind your curtains. We use those in my son’s room and it definitely helps make everything darker behind his black curtains. It also helps with regulating temperature and noise reduction, but I don’t think you have a noise problem, but we use it for fireworks here.
Cecilia, get 2 or 4 more curtain panels and extend your rod to accommodate them. It will block out the light coming in from the sides.❤ Gorgeous day! Love to Grim🐶😘
I can feel how exhausting this season is but never get over the beauty of Svalbard and how lucky you are to live there. I hope you all stay for a long, long time as the thought of you not being there makes me so sad. Thank you Cecelia, Christoffer and Grim for all I've learned and come to love through your beautiful channel.
Hi Cecilia ! You could also try "old school" wooden sun screens to put on the ouside side of the cabin? It's fairly easy to make from wooden planks. That's what we use in the south of Europe : blocks the sun and the heat + you can leave the window open to let some air enters the room
Gosh Cecilia, I like this idea! They will keep your aesthetic because they look nice. Or, buy more cute sleep masks so at least you can match your outfits! 😊❤
Maybe try foil covered cardboard to put inside the windows that you can remove easily during the day and store underneath the bed or behind a piece of furniture. Or the next time that you are in the states, there are travel suction cup blackout shades that are in the nursery/baby section of stores like Target that do a pretty amazing job in my apartment complex with lights that shine directly into my windows.
Cecilia, I know I have written this each time you talk about the daylight but you need to invest in blackout shades. You can purchase some really beautiful ones but they are a must. Lower them when it would normally be dusk and nighttime so your body can adjust. Put them in you living room area🙏🏻😊
Those curtains are already blackout curtains, she said it many times. The sun is getting on the sides, and it's probably darker inside than we see it, because the camera automatically brightens the area.
She says they don't sell them there, but I don't know why she doesn't buy them elsewhere when traveling or have them shipped in somehow? I agree that it seems like it would be worth it to get what she really needs.
@@joyindrelie6715 Yeah, I wondered that myself. She ships a lot of stuff for a lot of money, so if this is such a problem, she should have figured it out by now. Unless, this is an annoyance, but not big enough to spend so much money on it, and she exaggerates it for the sake of the video and to prove some point.
I love your channel Cecilia!! I’d like to leave a suggestion if I may… I think you could post more about your daily life/routine, stories about your childhood, past travels, etc. I guess we now know a lot about Svalbard, and we are still here after all these years because of you 🥰🥰🥰
Came here to say this! When my brother lived in Sweden (he was very young and very poor) in his first apartment, he made dark panels and put metal strips on the wall... and magnets in the panels. Tucked them under his bed when not in use.
This is brilliant, thank you! I was born in the Yukon, and I grew up listening to stories about having to carry rifles into the one town there was, of how beautiful it was, and how BRIGHT and difficult the summers were when the sun didn't go down. Now I live in Scotland, and while it's not 100% dark and light cycles, it gets quite close to it. You live in a beautiful place. Thank you for sharing your home with us.
After being on Svalbard myself on Friday (only two days ago) I enjoy watching your videos even more. ❤️ It is so great to see the places in town that I‘ve seen with my own eyes now. I spent the first part of the day in town and hiked up to Blomsterdalshøgda in the afternoon (of course with two local guides with polar bear protection). It really was surprisingly warm, 18 degrees I think. It was such a great and wonderful day, and I will come back some day. 😍
I had a very dificult time being stationed in Fairbanks Alaska for the same reason . A lot of my squad mates suffered depression in the winter, but i was the opposite. I felt totally drained and exausted by august . If i got 3 hours of sleep a day it was alot . I couldnt wait for winter . Some people are different . Those long summer days were rough on me . Ugh .
I’d never thought about it being a challenge to have so much daylight. Australia is the opposite end of the globe to you and we don’t experience these kinds of extremes of day and night. I love your night mask and think it is a great option for sleeping, however I see your point about needing a reprieve indoors as this would prepare your body for sleeping. Apart from removable blackout curtains everywhere it’s a hard one. Hope you all get a good sleep, good night
You could put a sliding wooden door on the outside of the window. It is made of a slim metal frame with wooden filling. It slides on a rail, that is fixed to the outside wall, so you can open or close as you like. This is what we have here in our house. Very simple construction, someone with manual skills can make it on his own. Depending on how you build the wooden filling, it can have gaps and therefore let some light in or be shut completely. Easy to make, inexpensive and very useful!
I really do love Grimm. I don’t know how you manage sunlight 24/7, I know I wouldn’t cope. This isn’t my favourite time of year, and I live in the UK. I see the videos you post during polar nights and I would love that. Give Grimm lots of cuddles he deserves them.
Tip for shutting more light out: Put velcro on the edges of the curtain (the side that faces the window) and the other half of the velcro on the wall next to the window. When you stick the curtains to the velcro on the wall it holds it closer to the wall which blocks more light from coming through. We have an oddly shaped window and I get really bad migraines, and this worked really well for us!
I totally get the exhaustion - I have trouble with the month of August! Apparently, reverse SAD is a thing & it's my summer jam. Can't wait for cozy fall & winter!!
SAD is most definitely a thing in the summer months! I'm 45 years old and always loved cold weather and when it gets dark earlier...just found out this year that summer SAD exists. I've always felt very down and drained from maybe mid June until mid September (I'm in Wisconsin USA)
Great video. You can tell your a mother to a dog ... you give him a taste first of your food before yourself . Great views... love your enthusiasm ❤ grim
I remember that you got your Vit D checked during the winter time to see how low it got, I would love it if you got it checked at the end of summertime to see how high it was
This is kindof how I feel living in Colorado! We obviously don't get these long days, but we have 300+ days of sun a year, and I find it exhausting. We need more clouds and rain... Usually when we get clouds, they're gone in an hour or two. So there's very little respite. (Written while I watch, with a migraine, and sun blaring in my windows, through the blinds. Heh)
I'm in Colorado, too. (Southern) Luckily I live in an old adobe cottage. It's cool. I draw the curtains and just hang out in my cave some days. The sun is relentless here, for sure.
I live in the U.K and we don’t have anywhere near that much sun, we get cloud, rain, grey skies often and 4 seasons - not really a fan of the sun so it suits
As some who cannot have any light while sleeping but I rent...I use little velcro stickies (sticks to wall and curtain, velcros together) they are white the walls are white the curtains can move freely in the middle for the breeze but won't move away from the wall. 👌🏻 Strongly recommend. But also yes the right sleep mask makes the world of a difference 🤍
Blackout shades work really well, and no curtains are needed. Kind of an accordion design you can pull down when needed. Seems like you may not be able to get them on Svalbard, but we bought the kit and installed them ourselves. They block out all light. I was surprised they didn’t have these in Iceland when I visited and it was light at night when we were there. Will also keep the house cool.
We recently went on vacation to the Great Wolf Lodge. My 8 year granddaughter loved the theming.. including the "Northern Lights" arcade. She marched straight into the gift shop upon arrival. She picked out a rainbow unicorn wolf.. and named it Grim. We love your content. Thank you for educating us about your way of life and the challenges you face on Svalbard. It's fascinating. 😊
Yep, 45 years in Alaska was enough for me! The sunlight and the darkness was much more difficult than the weather temperatures! Right now I'm visiting family in Alaska and honestly... ready to go HOME to Utah!
Hi Cecilia. In the years of watching your videos, I can't recall any images of any bugs/insects, not even a spider. I can't imagine you're completely bug-free, so I'm curious: no mosquitos? ticks? fleas? flies?
I hope you all will feel better soon. I love so much the cotton and the grass - is so nice to see this side of the Svalbard nature - more lenient (the little family of goose was so sweet ❤). I am in The Netherlands and i have trouble in the summer months with 17-18 hours of daylight. It becomes indeed very tiring, with all the shades and blackout curtains. Is like the body don't want to relax, is in a constant go go mode. At least we have a lot of rainy days, it helps sometimes. Thank you for a 24 hours session of sunshine!❤❤❤
Back in Europe, especially in the Balkan region, there are shutters that you lift every morning, and they protect you from the light perfectly, it's literally completely dark inside until you lift them, and they protect the windows from possible storms. They are not expensive and they are easy to install and use. They go on the outside of the windows and doors. They are white but the way they are made, they stack up on top of each other, and inside the house /apartment you have something like a twill tape to pull them up or down. It's really a lifesaver in every way. You may want to look into them. I'll try to find a picture of them and send it to you in Instagram. I live in Mexico and they don't have them. Sun is so bright every single day that sometimes I wear sunglasses inside. So I know the struggle ❤
Im from the balkan region Bulgaria and i know those shutters but they are not good because in big storms they make a lot of noice when there is a bit of a wind around the house.
I imagine there is not much you can plant that thrives in a place where 50F in summer is considered hot. Most plants need more than 2-3months above freezing.
In a Marriot Hotel after a flight to return home got canceled….your content on YT& IG put me in a better mood. After a much needed shower… i grabbed my iPad to see what was going on in Svalbard. Thank you, Cecilia, Christoffer, and Grim. 💙💙💙Goodnight…long day tomorrow. I can’t wait to be home!
Here's a suggestion, I sleep with a lamp on because I'm somewhat afraid of a dark room. So to black out that light, I sleep with a sleep mask PLUS a small hand towel over the mask, I just loosely put it over top. And can I tell you it makes such a difference, ALL the light is blocked out, and I get a much better sleep. All the best!
I have never been so insync with Cecilia as I was in this vid. For me personally, IF I lived on Svalbard, my bedroom would be my dark sanctuary. There are plenty of windows to see the view from in the rest of the house so I would absolutely do a total black out screen on those windows. I live in the California Central Valley where there is copious sunshine in summer. I have black out film over all my bedrooom windows, as I am disabled and MUST be able to rest in the daytime as well as sleep at night. It is my dark sanctuary and I love it!!!
That is why I hate summer. The long hours of daylight, the heat and the social pressure to like the summer... I hate it. I can imagine that you are so tired from all that light. I have blackout curtains in my bedroom and livingroom. And when all that summerlight drives me crazy I shut the curtains in the room where I am and relax with a little lamp and a good book. Irma from the Netherlands
Exactly the reason why I hate winter, makes me feel so sad and lonely. I love when the sun sets late. That said wouldn't want 24 hours of day light for so long.
My wife and I dislike summer very much as well. We don't experience midnight sun as we live in Wisconsin USA, but the summers here are BRIGHT, and HUMID, and many days are well over 90 degrees Fahrenheit. We are cold & dark weather people...cozy time 😊
It would be cool if someone could make glasses/sunglasses that would gradually block more sunlight according to the time of day to semi-simulate the setting sun. Then, if you also had blackout shades, you could kind of create a sense of darkness/night that might help you sleep. Love your channel - Svalbard is so beautiful! ❤
yeah, maybe from wall to wall so they cover everything, no slit for the sunlight to pass through + overlap the curtains so there's no slit between them either. I have dark colored blackout curtains with less light blockage percentage in general (the fabric is not as thick as this one in the video) but that works well for me.
Hi, Cecilia! I just wanted to thank you for being so honest and real with your audience. Your vlog style is so refreshing, I've been watching for over a year now! PS, love the periwinkle blue 💙 💅
I love that your vlogs are chill and cozy and just nice vibes but also so informative!! The perfect mix for me. This seems so extreme, I would probably be so tired all the time! Have you though about installing (so maybe buying somewhere online and installing yourself) those anti-burglary blinds that you can just scroll up/down whenever needed? I think that would be very helpful!
I think you need different blinds, blackout Roman shades to keep more light out only when needed but better than foil on window. I can’t imagine 4 months of sunlight.
We have the same issue with the sunlight heating up the house. We're renting so we're limited to what we can do, but one thing I found that helps block the bright light and some of the heat is taking the living room curtains and folding the bottom up and tucking them into the window frame and sill. They are blackout curtains that hang down longer than the windows are, so I have to fold them up. It doesn't look super fantastic, but it does block out the light much better that way and stuffing them into the window frame keeps some of the heat out, whereas heat just accumulates in the space between the glass and the loose curtain if they're just hanging like normal. Next time you visit the mainland, take your window measurements and perhaps a store there has a solution that would work for your cabin. If you can maybe shield your living room with blackouts and put a temporary divider up at the kitchen (even a privacy screen may help), you could keep your living room darker, which will help the tv area and your bedroom be a tad bit darker too and give you that cozy dark respite you need I agree it's a lot of fussing, but you seem to be having a harder time with Polar Day the last couple years so maybe the fussing would be worth it. We've had a lot of sh** weather where I am, including a few bad storms this year too. Since the Polar Vortex reversed, I expected some changes but didn't expect more storms. Hope your week ahead is good.
Thanks for sharing! I was thinking for blocking out the light, you might get a custom made sliding shutter( similar to your barn door. Enjoy your week!
Measure the windows in your kitchen, living room, and bedroom. The next time you are in the US, bring your windows measurements and buy black out curtains. As someone who was a shift worker for many years and slept during the day, black out curtains were a life saver.
@ceciliablomdahl I feel your pain! I work on ships and have worked midnight to noon shift as well as working in the Canadian arctic in 24 hour day light. The KEY life saver that is 100% light blocking but also semi aesthetically pleasing is sticky Velcro tape. One side goes on your window frame, and you could put the other side on the back side of your lovely curtains. If your curtains are light blocking you shouldn’t have any more light coming through. If you get the Velcro tape in white it should blend in with your walls/window frame and not look too bad. If your curtains aren’t 100% light blocking you could always get a window size vinyl cover made for summer time, and tape the one side of the Velcro to that and the other side to the window frame, thus also blocks some heat, and you can just put it away in winter. This is what we have on a lot of ships in the upper cabins that don’t have metal porthole covers, it’s reasonable to price/make/get shipped, and it lets you sleep like a baby. I can never sleep with a mask on my face,l out of comfort, so I just make a sleepy tea, go into my ‘blacked out’ room, put on a podcast and boom within an hour I sleep like a baby until my body is ready to wake up again. Also remember, food tells your body what time of day it is too, so don’t eat any meals too close to bed time. 😊hope any of that helps!
When you're in the USA next you should measure your window before you go and have them get you a black out blind that is slightly wider than the window- to block the most light. They'll help you at a store with the exact best fit. I also liked the idea another commenter had about putting curtains further out. So I'd make most of that wall a rod and add panels to capture and cover that escaping light.
This is such so beautiful, I totally love your video's. I can see why you are so exhausted because of the daylight all the time and time does get away from you but, you could totally buy some black out curtains to try and help you sleep when it's daylight all the time. What an adjustment though, by the way Grim is so adorable. Maybe buy some fans to try and cool off when you are also trying to sleep and to cool you guys off and maybe your cabin.
I'm sure that you've already thought of this but I'll say it anyways LOL Have you tried putting blackout curtains all throughout your house during the daylight season. And then pick a time that you would start closing those curtains. It would depend on your regular bedtime but I would probably start closing them at like 7:00 or 6:00 actually. And only go outside if you absolutely have to with letting grim out, wear sunglasses. If you practice this the moment the 24-hour son started you shouldn't have any problem with sleep. Set your clock for what time you normally wake up in the morning and then open your curtains. Heck I live in Florida where the time changes every year and it's light until about 8:30 in the summer. I wake up very very early like around 4:00 a.m. sometimes even at 3:00 a.m. so I like to go to bed early. I'll close my curtains somewhere between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. so that my body can slowly get regulated to get sleepy at the regular time. Love❤your channel, been watching since the beginning ❤
Svalbard is so beautiful but 24 hours of sun would definitely be hard on me so I would definitely be Team Polar Night! ❤ Have you ever seen “Insomnia” with Robin Williams? Set in Alaska and you see him progressively struggle to sleep during the long sunny days. 😮
Trying to explain what midnight sun to someone who hasn't experienced it is hard to do. It's not about blackout curtains, it's that you're not feeling tired at bedtime and never can tell what time it is. The lack of sleep rhythm makes me exhausted but not sleepy. I have to make myself lie down in the dark with an eye mask on until I sleep, every night at the same time, or I get clumsy and have no brain. Can't imagine 130 days of it, had less than half of that in Whitehorse.
I would absolutely want to experience polar day to see what it makes to the body. Equatorial day doesn't suit me at all, sunrise at 4:30 or 5am but sundown at 6pm ruined my mood. Shorter days in the winter I can stand because I know that after 60 days we're back to longer days and enjoying sundown late in the evening.
It’s crazy, I remember almost exactly a year ago (first week of August) I commented on your video about how quickly summer had gone by and next thing I knew it was polar night. Goes faster every year it seems! Sending love from Horseshoe Bend, Idaho!
Another Sunday, another awesome video from Cecilia! I pre-ordered your book and can’t wait for October! I’m going to order more as gifts for people too because I love everything you do!
Yes, that! They're equally spaced in a line, so at first I thought they were to support power lines but none seem to be visible. Maybe you climb up the ladder if a polar bear comes by?
I travelled to Sweden back in 2015 and we had an early morning the next day. I was trying to fall asleep at 10:30 and it still looked like sunset! I had to draw the curtains and still had a hard time falling asleep! I can’t imagine how you difficult it must for you on Svalbard 😮
Here's what I do to block out heat and light. It's cheap and easy. I cover cardboard in tin foil and tape it up on my windows, shiny side out. I do this because I don't have air conditioning. I live somewhere that never used to experience hot summers until recently and this is what I do to keep my place cool on extremely hot days. The tin foil reflects the light/heat and the cardboard blocks the heat.I remove it at night, open the windows and let the cool air in. Since you don't have night, you could try this to block out the light in your bedroom. Collapse some boxes, put tin foil on one side, tape up and close your curtains. It will be darker. You can still leave a window open with this set- up. You could put the cardboard tiles up in your living room in the evening to make it darker. It's easy to take them up and down. I just use clear packing tape to put them up.
@@catherinekalev5983 Thank you! This is my survival strategy to get through the heat without having a lot of money. It works surprisingly well. The other thing I do is put fans in the windows at night and pull cool air inside. I'm cooling the place at night and then sealing it up like a tomb during the day. I have an 18 year old cat and want to keep her comfortable.
@@emryborge7027 Ha, ha. Well, I'm a few stories up so I think the people on the street are safe. I'm more afraid that people will think I'm crazy when they look up and see all this tinfoil on my windows, ha ha.
Have you all thought about the fact that Cecilia’s views are never average!!!! She lives in like an Arctic fairytale and then her mom and dad live in the dreamiest most stunning white mansion with the pool and all the things!!!! How great is that!!! 🙋🏻♀️
You poor thing! This summer seems to be particularly hard for you ❤ I have a chronic illness that disrupts my circadian rhythms, so I understand perhaps a little of what you're going through. Also, in Australia, we use blockout blinds to reduce the light and heat coming through the windows in summer. You could use them in addition to your current curtains. If you can order them from the mainland, perhaps your friend the builder could install them for you?
You can get IKEA shipments right? Get their track curtains. Install the track on the ceiling all the way across the room, maybe 2 inches away from the wall to let air in, and get their light blocking curtain liners behind some heavy duty curtains. The curtains should hang all the way from the ceiling to the floor and from one wall to the next in front of any windows. You could even hang them in random places in the house and take the curtains down when it's not summer, for example to block the kitchen off from the rest of the house.
Hi Cecelia and Chrisoffer! I feel you with the constant sun. We too are exhausted here in SC from the 100-115 degree heat index for most of the past 3 weeks. Now Tropical Storm Debby (my name!), is coming up the coast and turning into a hurricane so rain and wind all week. Although that isn’t a good thing we are thankful for the rain for our plants and flowers and the cooler weather. Side note: have you read the Covenant of Water??? I am reading it now and think you would enjoy it! Hi from USAa/SC💕🏖️
I watch channels from all around the world and EVERYONE had a stormy summer this year... Japan, US, Korea, France, us in Canada... I think this is an indication of climate change and how summers will be from now on. Good thing cuz I LOVE thunderstorms and diluvian rain!!! Haha except when lighting hits my 100 year old tree and a huge branch falls and blocks the street like Friday😮 thankfully it hit nothing and no one but it is about 10 meters long and one meter diameter at the base... huge!! The tree is still standing and seemed unaffected, except losing one of many branches...

I was thinking the same thing. I love their cabin’s white walls, but darkening them up in the bedroom might help with sleeping during Polar Days. 🌅🌌

Soon the sun will set, and you'll all be put out of your misery. In Ireland, it's now getting dark at 10pm, and it's properly dark by 10.30pm. So the nights are closing in, and soon they'll be for you too. Best wishes !
Omg!!! I'm jealous!
@@GouganeBarra-u4t yes it's near 10 and it's getting dark outside....soon it will be darker earlier
Lykke til ❤
Quelle chance... C'est comment de vivre sans eux? (⚫🟤)
Ask Santa Claus to drop off some blackout shades and curtains. I heard he lives close by😂
Christopher is quite handy with things like that
I was in Norway recently and all hotel rooms had blackout curtains .
Sleep masks are the easiest solution, but I agree that you still need to block out the ambient light.
(Same here)..got mine at Home depot, fairly inexpensive
@@margietucker1719 she explained that they don’t sell those in Svalbard and would be expensive to ship there
Everything has to be shipped to the island which is very expensive. So that is probably why she doesn’t have them.
Mine are from IKEA and is pitch black.
Grim is still like a puppy he is so cute, and I love Polar Night the best.
Wooden shutter? Brilliant idea?!
Or hurricane shutters!! They black out the sun completely and are easily removeable for the dark season!!
Gosh Cecilia, I like this idea! They will keep your aesthetic because they look nice. Or, buy more cute sleep masks so at least you can match your outfits! 😊❤
My Sunday morning relaxing tradition!
I love the view of Grim and cotton grass balls 🤍
Lol it made me think they were his little minions

Cecilia, I know I have written this each time you talk about the daylight but you need to invest in blackout shades. You can purchase some really beautiful ones but they are a must. Lower them when it would normally be dusk and nighttime so your body can adjust. Put them in you living room area🙏🏻😊
Yes, I am not saying that to be mean but I have never understood why they don't buy blackoutn
I think we say it every year
Those curtains are already blackout curtains, she said it many times.
I guess we now know a lot about Svalbard, and we are still here after all these years because of you 🥰🥰🥰
Put magnetic strips down the window frame and down the sides of the curtains! It’ll shut that light right out!
Came here to say this! When my brother lived in Sweden (he was very young and very poor) in his first apartment, he made dark panels and put metal strips on the wall... and magnets in the panels. Tucked them under his bed when not in use.
Good idea. Velcro strips would work too and help insulate in the winter. 😊
I've posted the same thing ❤ Saved my sleep in the UK where the days are very long and the nights are very short right now!
I use push pins
@@historybarf Does that not damage the wall/window frame?
Give Grimm lots of cuddles he deserves them.
glad to see "aw big stretch" is universal
GRIM is just perfect :) i love him so much
Tip for shutting more light out: Put velcro on the edges of the curtain (the side that faces the window) and the other half of the velcro on the wall next to the window. When you stick the curtains to the velcro on the wall it holds it closer to the wall which blocks more light from coming through. We have an oddly shaped window and I get really bad migraines, and this worked really well for us!
I love seeing doggos taking their people for a walk. The endless night or endless day wouldn't bother me as much as the lack of green and trees.
I totally get the exhaustion - I have trouble with the month of August! Apparently, reverse SAD is a thing & it's my summer jam. Can't wait for cozy fall & winter!!
Yes. Listening to Cecilia made me realize why I am so exhausted during the evenings in August.
Love the cotton grass there. It makes me think of Dr Seuss 💕
Yes! Horton Hears a Who!
Grimm standing on the field with this white flowers and the ocean behind😍😍😍
Blackout shades work really well, and no curtains are needed. Kind of an accordion design you can pull down when needed. Seems like you may not be able to get them on Svalbard, but we bought the kit and installed them ourselves. They block out all light. I was surprised they didn’t have these in Iceland when I visited and it was light at night when we were there. Will also keep the house cool.
Cecilia never has a boring episode! Never knew those little "cotton ball weeds" could grow there!

I can't imagine you're completely bug-free, so I'm curious: no mosquitos? ticks? fleas? flies?
That’s a great question! 😃👌

Hi Cecilia. Lots of love to you, Grim and Christoffer 💜💜
They probably would need to take those off for every winter as storms are pretty harsh in there.
Roladans. That’s what they are called
I love WILD it's great! QUESTION- Are people able to garden in raised beds? Do people do art in the area? If so, can you show us some of it please
Ohhh yeah…. Maybe even vertical farming???
I’d be more anxious with a mask and towel over my eyes than with the light off in the room
Blackout curtains are a must!! 😊All else fails, thick blankets and sleep mask👏👏😉 Such a beautiful view from your deck. 🤗💚
Agree , why not checkout ikea blackout curtains
Maybe you should consider blackout shutters or blinds and draw than at around 8pm to give your body time to wind down.
I'm in the Central Valley too, and in my bedroom I have 3 layers of blackout curtains to keep the light out but also the heat (115 etc.)
Me as well . I am in Canada.
I hate heat and bugs but midnight sun doesn't bother me at all 😁
Exactly the reason why I hate winter, makes me feel so sad and lonely.
you need to add two more panels and expand your drapery rods another 6 inches on either side.
yeah, maybe from wall to wall so they cover everything, no slit for the sunlight to pass through + overlap the curtains so there's no slit between them either. I have dark colored blackout curtains with less light blockage percentage in general (the fabric is not as thick as this one in the video) but that works well for me.
I love that even after nine years you're still in awe of the views. And even though polar day exhausts you, you still appreciate it.
I guess that's why it's called Long Year Byen = Being a Long Year. BEAUTIFUL!
Thank you so much for another video Cecilia! I hope Grim has recovered completely as well.
Be still my heart…I love Grim! He is so precious!
Thanks!
For the window light, we loved the Rolladens living in Germany. They kept it pitch dark when we needed a break from the light.
That's what I was going to suggest. They work great! It's probably expensive, but I would think worth the investment in this case.
Your videos are so peaceful to watch. Thank you for sharing content that really helps when I’m in the midst of my own chaos
If you can maybe shield your living room with blackouts and put a temporary divider up at the kitchen (even a privacy screen may help), you could keep your living room darker, which will help the tv area and your bedroom be a tad bit darker too and give you that cozy dark respite you need
I agree it's a lot of fussing, but you seem to be having a harder time with Polar Day the last couple years so maybe the fussing would be worth it.
What are those wooden contraptions (structures) lined up at 09:50? I don’t recall you mentioning them before. 🤔
@ceciliablomdahl
I feel your pain!
And reflective solar shades too! It makes it not as hot.
I'm sure that you've already thought of this but I'll say it anyways LOL
Have you tried putting blackout curtains all throughout your house during the daylight season.
Could you have a summer bedroom and a winter bedroom - it would mean a complete cabin reset every season but we know how much you love that!
I don't think I will ever get tired of your videos. I just love the peacefulness and charm you add to each video. I am so excited for your book!!
Svalbard has a bus? Maybe it's an airport bus? Those barnacle goose babies - so cute.
I will be coming to Svalbard in 334 days.
Are crossing off the days?
😂😂😂
I would absolutely want to experience polar day to see what it makes to the body. Equatorial day doesn't suit me at all, sunrise at 4:30 or 5am but sundown at 6pm ruined my mood. Shorter days in the winter I can stand because I know that after 60 days we're back to longer days and enjoying sundown late in the evening.
You don't need those little lights behind your bed in the summer. And if your cabin is so hot, use fewer covers.
It’s crazy, I remember almost exactly a year ago (first week of August) I commented on your video about how quickly summer had gone by and next thing I knew it was polar night. Goes faster every year it seems! Sending love from Horseshoe Bend, Idaho!
You need hurricane roll down shutters. They will also help with the strong winds in winter !! 👍
Another Sunday, another awesome video from Cecilia! I pre-ordered your book and can’t wait for October! I’m going to order more as gifts for people too because I love everything you do!
What are those wooden towers you are walking past out on the tundra where the "cotton balls" grow?
I am also curious about those.
Yes, that! They're equally spaced in a line, so at first I thought they were to support power lines but none seem to be visible. Maybe you climb up the ladder if a polar bear comes by?
The towers were used to transport coal from the mines to the harbour. Some of the cables and buckets are still there.
@@Radaos Thank you for your reply!
I was stationed in Iceland for a year. I know how hard it was for the polar day and night. But what an experience!!
Yay! Wait, you went to Husky Cafe without us?! 😊
Very creative. Love it.

Also, in Australia, we use blockout blinds to reduce the light and heat coming through the windows in summer. You could use them in addition to your current curtains. If you can order them from the mainland, perhaps your friend the builder could install them for you?
Thumbs up if it's N24 or DSPD! ;-)
The next time you go to Portugal or the US, take less stuff and buy the kind of curtains you can’t get there.
Yes they could buy them in Portugal and have them shipped over.
Salute to fellow South Carolinian! The actual forecast here (upstate) the other day was 108° heat index! Stay strong!
@@Cameron5043return salute! Stay safe up there!😊💕🏖️🌀
@@Crochetlady3-l1o you too! Particularly if you are near the incoming hurricane!
