I don't know what your plans are for next year, but with that fantastic rooftop and all the natural sunlight, that is the perfect location for a container garden. Cherry tomatoes, the kind you held up, are insanely easy to grow and they keep producing all summer. You can either buy starter plants or grow from seed-it really isn't hard at all. I have lots of containers and besides tomatoes I grow cucumbers, green and purple beans, tomatillos, pumpkins, blackberries and raspberries, purple potatoes (yum).etc. I save SO much money every summer and I love you

I don't know how you guys define 'TINY, TINY' in Europe...but for an Asian like me, things I normally buy from the store are almost always good enough for 2-3 meals. There is another one where you can buy some items a lot cheaper than the 100yen Lawson store which is called まいばすけっと(MyBasket). If you happen to spot any of this store, I guarantee you, that it's gonna be worth your wile to roam inside the store(s) and compare the prices to what you normally buy.

Totally agree that it could be more expensive to make your own food than eating out in Tokyo, especially since convenience store food is just TOO GOOD!!!! And cheap! Double win! Love your channel by the way :D

sometimes I buy food stuffs at 100yen Lawson store(near where I live)...it has fresh vegetables and fruits as well. You can also buy them chopped (cut) and packed. If there's one near you..I would suggest a visit.

+1 for "about bikes in japan" video. Questions coming up in mind:
Have you bought it (if so, then for how much), or you're renting?
If renting, then how much will it be a day or a week, for example?
Should you use a bike lock?
For what do you use it, how often, from where to where? (just your overall usage scenario, that is)
Can you use it all year long? (i.e. in Russia we have too much snow everywhere in winter, so it's more of a seasonal thing)
How about far away trips - i.e. going to other cities by bullet train and then renting a bike there - will it be convinient? (or maybe it is easier to buy once and take it with you)
Can you rent a bike pretty much everywhere or not?
Are there any special bike lanes and how common are they?
Can you use it everywhere? (maybe there are some restricted zones or blocks or very bike-problematic places, so i.e. you were headed somewhere on a bike and then oh shit wtf its prohibited)

    • @NikolayKotlyarov
      @NikolayKotlyarov 8 років тому

Oh, yeah, I forgot: how about subway and suburb trains - can you take a bike there?

Nikolay Kotlyarov Simple shopping bikes with a basket in front are sold for as little as 10,000 ¥ (100 $). Bike lanes? Never seen any. People ride their bikes on the sidewalk! Never seen anybody taking a bike on a train. Public transport is too crowded.

The "I started eating lots of bananas because they're cheap" thing is SO REAL. xD I'm in central Japan, in a city surrounded by the inaka, and sometimes some fruits and vegetables are pretty cheap when they're in season. Onions are cheap. Cucumbers are cheap. Kabocha can be cheap. I usually find better deals in the local/farmer's market section of the grocery store. It's not the ideal, but sometimes it's cheaper to buy frozen fruits and veggies. Also, the school where I work has its own farm, and we pretty regularly harvest things like carrots, potatoes, daikon, etc. with the kids. I definitely take advantage of that when I can!
But actually, I had a question about your grocery haul...are you able to eat all of that stuff, like those tomatoes and those bananas, before they go bad? I feel like where I live, the produce is sold when it's at its best...so you have like 2-3 days max to eat it, in a lot of cases. Whereas in America, we usually buy things before they're ripe and then play the risky waiting game...If you have any tricks for keeping fruits and veggies fresh longer, please share!

The fruits and veggies are expensive, because the farmers usually throw away the items that aren't the "right shape", so what they sell is perfect.
Another reason is that sometimes, for Apple Trees, they remove some flowers that can produce Apples, to make sure the apples that are produced get the most nutrients.

Elsewhere in Japan is much cheaper than Tokyo... In Kansai there are still many old fashioned shopping arcades with grocery stores, and in the countryside there are decently prices farm shops and stalls in a lot of places. Still, Japanese people seem to ear more veg and see fruit as more of a treat.

Hi, Euhm I live in belgium (born and raised) and I don't know where you went to buy your groceries but the bigger shops are usualy expensive. But i usually go to Aldi or local supperette's they sometimes can be expensive if you buy out of season fruit/vegtables but if you watch out for this you can buy pretty cheap. Last summer i bought an entire water melon that was 2-3 kg for 5 euro and a 500grams of blueberry's for 1 euro. It's just a question of where you go buy. I don't mean to come off defensive . Just letting you know

Thanks for this video! I'm moving to Japan in a few weeks and wasn't looking forward to unsatisfactory grocery shopping that I experienced there before. In the UK you can buy a whole bowl of apples for 100 yen and somethings even less! I particularly liked how much meat it looks like you can buy from that shop. I'm gonna check that shop out, hopefully they'll be one near me but otherwise I'll travel

  • @АнастасияПривидение

This is the first video of yours I've seen and I love it, I'm currently saving to move to (hopefully) Tokyo but it seems so expensive 😅 I have a few questions )if you don't mind answering them: how long have you lived in Tokyo? Is there anywhere online where I can find the Kanji book you have in this video? What area of Tokyo do you live in? (I don't know much about Tokyo so I'm just wondering where to start looking) thank you and I love this video, I'll be watching more :D

My name is Reagan from NZ,
    our apples ranging from
    $0.99c ~$5 /kg
    That's¥78 ~¥383 /kg
    (Not just one or 2)
cheap doesn't really mean bad, sometimes it's because it right in the harvesting season so you only have to pay a little for the freshest fruits , same for the vegetables too.

200 yen for one apple: That is similar to around 200 US pennies, so around $2 US dollars ( $1.81 USD, or $2.40 Canadian dollars, to be exact, at current exchange rates). Yeah, food is expensive in Japan. And wages are not that high, at least not anymore.

I was suprprised though, as you said, that store sold in bulk? 4 carrots is not what I think when I think 'in bulk'! My grocery store sells half a kilo of carrots as the absolute smallest package size - but it costs about as much as the regular pack with 1 kilo.
