Interstate 95 (I-95) is a part of the Interstate Highway System that parallels the East Coast of the United States from Miami, Florida in the south to Houlton, Maine, in the north. In the U.S. state of Massachusetts, it spans 91 miles (146 km) along a north-south axis. It is the third-longest Interstate Highway in Massachusetts, behind I-90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike) and I-495, while I-95 in full is the longest north-south Interstate, and sixth-longest Interstate Highway in the United States.
Its southern terminus within the state is located in Attleboro, where I-95 enters from Pawtucket, Rhode Island. It intersects with U.S. Route 1 (US 1) and the northern terminus of I-295 within Attleboro, I-495 in Mansfield, and US 1 in Sharon before arriving at an interchange with I-93, US 1, and Route 128 in Canton. At this interchange, I-95 begins running concurrently with US 1 and Route 128 along a beltway roughly 15 miles (24 km) outside of Boston. While earlier plans called for I-95 to run northeastward through Boston along the Southwest Corridor and a more northerly portion of Route 1 known as the Northeast Expressway, these plans were squashed due to fierce community opposition. As such, Boston is one of only two major east coast cities that I-95 bypasses (the other, Washington DC, for the same reason).
While its concurrency with US 1 ends in Dedham, its concurrency with Route 128 continues as it meets with expressways including the Massachusetts Turnpike in Weston, US 20 in Waltham, Route 2 in Lexington, US 3 in Burlington (with which it runs concurrently within the town), and I-93 and US 1 in Reading and Lynnfield, respectively. I-95 and Route 128 split in Peabody, as Route 128 travels north-east towards its northern terminus in Gloucester, I-95 continues north and crosses US 1 in Peabody and Danvers. Within Salisbury, it intersects the northern terminus of I-495 and arrives at its own northern terminus, where I-95 continues into Seabrook, New Hampshire as the Blue Star Turnpike.

Have you all noticed that I-95 never goes through Boston. Instead it goes around the city to the west and north. That's due to the Southwest Corridor, north of where I-95 in Canton goes on the 270-degree loop ramp, was cancelled in 1972 due to then-governor Francis Sargent cancelling all freeway construction inside MA 128 except for the I-93 viaduct in Boston and Somerville.
Now that's what you call an example of a freeway revolt. The Northeast Expwy in Boston is still there, but was signed as US 1 and it was supposed to link I-95, but was cancelled. The expressway ended at a roundabout interchange.
@@CrystalClearWith8BE A upgraded US-1 northeast expressway expansion from Revere to Peabody. It would've been a better route than having it on the marshlands, saugus, lynn and peabody.

@@FLYSLATERYDER Not true. The closest I-95 gets to within the city line (MA does not use the term "city limits;" for that matter, neither does the rest of New England) is about 2 or 3 miles, from where it intersects I-93 / US 1 in Canton to MA 1A / US 1 South [former US 1 North]) in Dedham.
I keep watching these videos of these northern roads and they’re so nice! Pavement in good condition, lines look visible and there’s plenty of signs.. and if you disagree then you don’t leave in the heat. Our roads are nice but the hot temperatures really do a number on our infrastructure
While you're in the area, if you have time and the weather permits it, you've gotta check out the NH white mountains portion of I-93! Lots of killer views when it slims down to four and then two lanes.
Already headed back South now. Wanted to get that area but the blizzard was on the way when I was up there.

26:46 I guess US 3 does not like being recognized on its I-95/MA 128 concurrency.
It's a short concurrency. Besides, US 3 south of I-95 / MA 128 is a very slow mostly 2-lane road with many traffic signals. Very few motorists traveling on US 3 south from Lowell or Nashua NH would continue on US 3 once the standalone freeway ends.

When US 3 South intersects with I-95 / MA 128, overhead signage suggests that motorists going to Cape Cod use I-95 / MA 128 South rather than continue on US 3. From your I-93 video, note that the highway going to Cape Cod at Exit 7 is MA 3. The transition point between US 3 and MA 3 is at the Harvard Bridge which carries MA 2A, which you glossed over at the end of the Cambridge street video. What's interesting here is that MassDOT considers US 3 and MA 3 to be the same highway, with mile markers continuing past the transition. After all, according to that agency, "it's Route 3!" AASHTO and just about everyone else does not.

@뮤직컴포저 Reading MA is pronounced the same as Reading PA. So is North Reading MA, a separate town.
One thing I noticed about Massachusetts when I was there in 2019 is how big the state highway signs are when they are on freeways.

A rather screwy setup, and, as usual, politics is involved. MA 128 (the Circumferential Highway) was there before I-95. Older maps show planned I-93 and 95 going south from MA 128 through Boston. It's obvious the I-95 exit onto MA 128 was not to be a terminal exit, but that 95 was to continue north (you don't build a four-lane bridge and only use one). Then the governor cut off construction after the MassPike was continued into Boston from MA 128 (it used to end there). 95 was rerouted to run concurrently with MA 128. 93 did get built, and I imagine the Feds made it clear there had to be an Interstate into Boston proper, governor or not. There are no loop or spur routes in Boston and the immediate area. I-495 is essentially the second loop around Boston; I-95 is the first one. Then there's the service areas on 128. When the MassPike once ended at MA 128, the 'freeway' service areas were probably designed for those coming off the turnpike. We're talking 60-70 years ago there.

Yes, it bypasses Boston at approximately a 30 mile radius. Ironically, I-95 is also a "Boston bypass" but only because it's planned route through the city was cancelled.
