Brit here, most record shops in the UK do have the records in the sleeves. It’s only the ones in central London that have them behind the counter because of thieves.
It’s only in central London and some other city centres where vinyls are kept behind the counter. Most record stores in the UK keep their records in the sleeves, just like in the USA. I live in suburban London, so I shop for records in the suburbs and central London. But also outside of London. The majority of shops I go to have the records in the sleeves. I’ve never seen a shop outside of the centre of London that keeps records behind the counter.
Haha I had no idea that in America the records are kept in the sleeves, that's really interesting. I'm pretty sure we keep it behind the shelf to keep the vinyl in best possible condition 😁
Im from Leeds, UK and a couple stores here do that sleeve-display-only thing too. i think its also to the reduce damage from the vinyl being moved about so much. i like it
Shame you didn't check out rough trade west while you were in Notting hill, I'm gonna be working there this summer hopefully! If you come back then come visit!
Too Many Records upstairs it is! But they have this really cool downstairs section downstairs where they sell second hand stuff, I've seen some rare stuff there before!
bristol has one of the biggest record fayers in the country. its 4 times a year and is 3 floors filled with thousands of records. they open early for the serious collectors. its at the colstan hall. any UK collectors, this is a must
great video. The empty sleeves must be an English thing. here in Manchester there's a great shop for second hand Vinyl and CD'S. Loads of rare stuff for amazing prices but both formats are empty sleeves as you found and also the CD'S (100s of them) are filed by letter only not band. You have to know what you're looking for and take a chance on the quality of the discs but I've made some great finds there!
my local record shop has them behind the counter so people arent touching or scratching the record unless its brand new and sealed and they only sell decent condition records so theres no need to look at the disc
I flew lightly for this trip, just a backpack and my shoulder bag with clothes. I shoved my backpack (empty) inside my shoulder bag and had the bag of records as my carry on. Kept them underneath the seat in front of me for the duration.
Nice video man! Really digging freelance whales. Hey this is a side note, what are your thoughts on Ben Folds? I just saw him in concert, and he alongside Andrew Mcmahon from Jack's Mannequin are easily the two most influential artists on my own playing. I can't get enough of his crazy innovation in his music!
Cool vid, alot of interesting finds, makes me want to go check out the record shops in England, I really don't know any of the groups you picked up I'll have to check them out. Well I do know Pearl Jam they are a local group. Subbed you and look forward to checking out some more of your vids. Later -Ron
Random PJ fact of the day: Pilate was written by Jeff after reading a book about Pontius Pilate being alone in the mountains with his dog after banishment for his part in Christ being crucified.
Awesome video! I have been curious of how you categorize your records on your shelves. Do you sort them by genre or by alphabetical order? I currently have my collection sorted by genre, but it gets tricky when there are bands that do not really fall into a specific genre.
You got London vinyl stores wrong. The vinyl is behind the counter to stop it being mishandled by arses who do not handle an album/single they do not own incorrectly or evenly violently. Plain and simple. Ironically you are encouraged/advised to look at the album if you are interested in buying but, guess what, a lot of people then mishandle them. I am a regular in Reckless Records in Soho and they have the patience of saints.
weve got countless gems of record shops in the northern quarter, full of amazing records from bands such as joy division, the smiths, the stone roses et cetera, with shops such as the vinyl exchange and picadilly records in manchester being the standout ones, and overall it is a beautiful city despite some regarding it as a bit grey and dismal; and it has a great musical heritage.
affleck's palace and picadilly records in manchester are the best, but i would say there's more places for records in london like rough trade and reckless.

thanks for clearing that up
I don't know if you're aware, but you made this same comment on this video three years prior.

Reckless records in Chicago has their records behind the counter like that

Makes sense. It has pros and cons!
Daaaaaamn! Crazy good haul there Matt! Congrats on all the vinyl!
Thanks Michael!!

First, loving the "awake" tycho shirt! Second I have been looking for sculptures "toad blinker" for so long! Super jealous!
super rad you came to vegas and went to zia!
Interesting finds might have to check them out
Shame you didn't check out rough trade west while you were in Notting hill, I'm gonna be working there this summer hopefully! If you come back then come visit!
I heard that Rough Trade was almost entirely new vinyl. I'm mostly interested in used.
Too Many Records upstairs it is! But they have this really cool downstairs section downstairs where they sell second hand stuff, I've seen some rare stuff there before!
The records at Reckless Records in Chicago are also kept behind the counter. Flip through the empty sleeves and then get to see the record at checkout
Interesting! They probably took the method from the UK store (which was the original)

new mercury yeah I think it's a British thing 😁 I know they do it in liverpool and Edinburgh as well.
next time go to All Ages Record Shop in Camden town. It is an amazing vinyl store
I just picked up People a couple of days ago! Really great EP, although it sounds more like Feels than Sung Tongs.
Still haven't spun it yet, but sounding like Feels is certainly not a bad thing.
my local record shop has them behind the counter so people arent touching or scratching the record unless its brand new and sealed and they only sell decent condition records so theres no need to look at the disc
Cool finds, didn't snag any Smiths stuff?
I'm interetsed in your method of traveling by plane with your record pickups..how'd you store them on your way back?
I flew lightly for this trip, just a backpack and my shoulder bag with clothes. I shoved my backpack (empty) inside my shoulder bag and had the bag of records as my carry on. Kept them underneath the seat in front of me for the duration.

I dig Ben Folds/Ben Folds Five but beyond the singles I haven't really given him a deep dive, musically. I love anything Andrew though!
Surprised you never went to Rough Trade or Banquet.
Next trip, more stores!
Banquet Records is my local :D
pop in for a cup of tea next time!
Id love to go to Zia Records & HMV. They always have exclusives they won't ship to u.s

That's awesome! Never knew that.

Excellent question. I actually am going to be doing a video on this soon so look forward to that :)
Too Many Records Awesome! I'm excited to see it! Your channel is by far my favorite, keep up the great work!
nice Tycho shirt
if you buy the sevan swans lp it comes with that 7 inch
Actually the LP comes with I Went Dancing With My Sister / Waste Of What Your Kids Won't Have

That is weird I live in Doncaster in England and the only record shop in Doncaster is HMV and they have the records in the sleeves
Because too many albums go missing in shops - people do take them and walk out without paying
Do you find yourself seeing the price of a record in a store and the looking on discogs for the market price before you buy?
Zia records is awesome
Go to Manchester next time
What's there?

Big up Piccadilly Records Vinyl Exchange and Clampdown!!
There some good shops in Afflecks aswel such as Vinyl Resting place
Does anyone have any recommendations for more “uk exclusive” records to look out for in the area?
shout out zia records
Why don't you contact the people you bought the EP from and ask them to send you the other disc that should have come with the half you have.
My guess is that the other disk wasn't there, which is why it was priced at one pound.
Went to England didn't buy any British music 🙄
otropic....?what next.....things are going away from music more about shock
It's a combination of theft and damage, and habit. BTW Your crazy is average, or mainstream finds. Be careful not to mislead.
