I’m getting a lot of angry comments about this so let me clarify: the jazzy style and her laying back in the beat was not a critique. Just a comment. And I thought it sounded really cool. But for that one line (a couple of other places but mainly this line) she was rushing it, forcing too many syllables into too small a space. She sang “I don’t wanna hold it back again,” (7 words, 9 syllables) but the original was written “I won’t hold it back again” (6 words, and only 7 syllables). That’s why it sounded rushed… because it was. I think I made it clear if you watch to the end that this was my favorite performance of hers that I’ve seen so far because of the sincerity with which she delivered the message, but nobody is perfect. I ask you to consider how young miss Jordan would feel if she read comments insisting that she’s perfect and never makes mistakes. Imagine the pressure that would put on such a young person. To be expected to be perfect all the time. I might suggest recognizing and accepting that she is human and, as such, has every right to make mistakes, grow and learn would be a kindness to her. She is remarkable but she is also human. And I think she would be grateful for that acknowledgment. Thanks to everyone for watching, liking and commenting on the video. It means the world to me.
I've heard some refer to Angelina singing at the start as "back phrasing" which is a jazz technique. I don't know enough about jazz to be sure that's relevant. I remember being shocked when Angelina belted out this tribute to Whitney. Shocked. I never saw it coming! Nice reaction 🍁
Reactors have an expectation that they are witnessing the best a particular artist has to offer at any given time, and they are justified in believing that. Fans who follow Angelina know that what they hear is just a moment in time. Maybe she can do better. Maybe she could have done better that same day if it mattered enough. I prefer to think of it as we are being shown the scrapbook of a genius but, whereas conventionally that glimpse into the past only happens when the genius is widely recognised as such, we are seeing the 'past' of a future great in real time. I was today reminded of Angelina's rendition of Dylan's 'Make You Feel My Love' as popularised by Adele. It was peppered with timing issues stemming from her needing to read the lyrics from her phone. Nobody, not even a non-singer would serve that up as a finished article and say: "This is me; the best I can do"; it was obviously not even rehearsed! A second run would clearly have become better and maybe after a third or fourth she would be ready to go into the studio but that's not what it was about. She may never even sing it again. Guys like Egil and Ivan are hired accompanists who get utilised as their employer, Angelina, sees fit and are with her for a limited time. Evidently the camera rolls much of the time in case magic happens. Maybe her fans' voracious appetite to be privy to everything she does is what motivates her to upload stuff that nearly every other singer would consign to the cutting room floor, who knows. I believe her fans appreciate the insight, identify the beauty and potential amongst the flaws but most of all recognise Angelina's uploads to various platforms as diary entries not designed to compare or compete with performances achieved with three days of studio time and all the technology and engineering expertise multi-millionaire artist and producers can throw at a project. I recently watched an old interview with an artist called Yigal Ozeri. I had never heard of him before but his talent is that his paintings are almost indistinguishable from photographs, which you would think would make him much more highly regarded than another artist faced with the same subject, who flicks his paintbrush at a canvas a few times, signs it and puts it in a gallery. Yet that doesn't necessarily seem to be the case. So maybe perfection is overrated anyway. His photo-real paintings, for all their technical merit, certainly struck me as rather soulless . . . and nobody has ever accused Angelina of that.
@Cliff That’s the term I was looking for! Lol. I have and will keep emphasizing that the music side of performance is not my specialty and while I have been around it pretty much my whole life and have a great love for music as an art form, particularly the terminology escapes me. I believe this is exactly what I was referring to. Thank you for giving me the words 😊
Repeat after me. 12 yrs. old. Brilliant. We're watching a young girl traveling down the road to Superstardom. I wonder what we would have seen if we had watched Whitney perform this song at 12. That's a video I would give a million to see. It's so sad that Whitney is no longer with us because it would be priceless to know what she would have thought of this performance of her signature song.
Great reaction my friend. And I think you're absolutely right that she's behind her normal dragging in the part you mention. I'm hearing the same every time I hear this performance. Also at one point later on. You ARE allowed to say that. It's a REACTION channel after all. I'm one of Angelina's biggest fans and promoters here on YT, and I didn't see your comments as a critique. People need to calm down :-) Now, there ARE a few things to consider in this performance. Like you said, she sings to a karaoke track. This is the result of a one or two take recording. She is recording from her house, without any kind of post processing. She was very late 12 or had JUST turned 13 here. As we all know, the lungs are FAR from fully developed at that age. Now, at age 16 (as of January 10th), her lungs probably still aren't, scary as it may sound :-) When hearing this performance, we will have a very vivid memory of the original recording, done by a 29 year old Whitney Houston (R.I.P.), in an extremely costly studio production, where each and every (if any) minor imperfection has been polished off. THAT's the benchmark, and in that regard this is a stellar performance in every meaning of the word. I'm looking forward to your next Angelina reaction. Love from Norway :-)
Thanks for reaction. Very Educational. Angelina Jordan is 12 here in video, however her professional beginnings started at age 6. You will may find it interesting to see her singing in a professional studio for the first time. It shows! Mind blowing! JUST PURE, RAW, TALENT AND EXCITEMENT. Heads up AJ is known to perform a song1 or 2 times smashes it out of the park. Keeping in mind that she is multilingual as English is not her first language. THAT BLOWS MY MIND. AGE 6! #AngelinaJordanHurtstudioversion (4:06) #AngelinaJordanIwhohavenothing (3:44)
I love your interpretation that Angelina was singing this one for us, her Angels. I think she always does. She's so appreciative of her fan base, giving us special treats like her Valentine's Day cover, and her wonderful Christmas concert, which Republic Records specially arranged as an online ticketed event, and their musicians enthusiastically supported her in performing. This is one very special artist in the making, and we will all be able to say we were here at the beginning.
You haven’t listened to enough Angelina to fully understand her style. There are no dialect issues here. One of her greatest strengths is her phrasing. She didn’t give you what you expected, but she rarely does. Jazz is in her bones, even when she’s not in that genre. She is very often behind the beat-it’s completely stylistic. You’ll also see, if you watch more of her videos, that many are like this one-one take, with a musical track or acoustic guitar behind her. This is not perfect, but it’s what we love so much about her. At 12 years old, she takes on a huge song, and gives us the raw vocals. This song is noteworthy because it’s a very rare example of Angelina going right to the edge of her range. On just about any other song, her vocals are effortless, her body relaxed with no visible tension. If you want to see her making a song her own and hear a magical performance, try her cover of Rihanna’s Stay, or Adele’s A Million Years Ago. Absolutely stunning.
100% agree ! Another good example would be her cover of I'll always love you, it's not a Whitney song but her cover is more known than the original so it's a good way to see what Angelina does when she arranges a Whitney song. She was a bit younger than here and only had a guitar besides her. ua-cam.com/video/eml4tIAqWUY/v-deo.html
I understand and agree with what your saying to paining. And the jazzy style and her laying back in the best was not a critique. Just a comment. And I thought it sounded really cool. But for that one line she was rushing it. Go listen to it and then count the number of words. She sang sung “I don’t wanna hold it back again,” (7 words, 9 syllables) but the original was written “I won’t hold it back again” (6 words, and only 7 syllables). That’s why it sounded rushed… because it was. I hope this clears things up. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@tnae we’re in perfect agreement on what Angelina sang, and there’s no right or wrong here. Angelina altered the words in the original, but for me, it didn’t sound rushed. It sounded like Angelina injecting some of her own phrasing and her own touch. My point is that she does this in other songs. You can hear it in her covers of Feelin Good, where she holds back, but then adds some additional wording to the line in the same manner. It’s intentional and stylistic. You may prefer the original wording, but Angelina often alters cadence.
@@tnae I' would quibble with calling it "rushing it" because it has pejorative implications. It's true she put more syllables in that line but the end result was, as you admit, was cool sounding. So I think her interpretation was an upgrade, both in the way it sounded and the meaning it conveyed. In fact it's probably my favourite line in the song. I have other criticisms of the performance, I found the top of her belts to be a little strained. I would like to hear her try it again, I'm sure she will someday.
Angelina has been 'professional' since she won NGT at 8 years old. She is doing a cover, she is is 12 years old and she changes things to her way of doing it.
Ceci Dover, a jazz singer and vocal coach from Barcelona Spain and reactor, felt the same issue that you did, but loved the performance all the same. She is at home in her "Music Corner" and this is Whitney Houston! This was a pracitce session, per musicians who accompany her, she pics the songs for her videos an hour before taping the songs. And usually does them in one take. You should see here more polished performance of this same song the video that came out about 7 days ago where she is in Norway in a red suite... you will see the maturity and true colors of her voice in this song, here she is singing to the music track in the original key sung by Whitney Houston which is higher tone than what Angelina's voice is used to. She has become a chameleon in adjusting her tone, but here, she was just testing her vocal range, so you will see some break in her voice where she lost her breath... so you are not wrong, but you need the context to appreciate the power of her rendition
ANGELINA JORDAN now 16 years old - Signed with Republic Records only 14 years old. Her first album is at work with Republic Records for release. Born and raised in Oslo, Norway; this world-renowned singer has earned fantastic reviews for the amazing breadth, depth and maturity of her vocal talent that simply belies her young age. She started singing when she was only 1 1/2 years old!!!! Angelina’s videos have received over 1 billion views on UA-cam and almost 2,5 billion views on Facebook. Amazingly, her passion for music began at just one-and- a-half years of age when Angelina first saw Whitney Houston on UA-cam performing I Will Always Love You. Whitney - and later Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington - became her first major musical influences. At the age of seven, Angelina auditioned for Norway’s Got Talent performing Billie Holiday’s Gloomy Sunday. She won the competition with the show drawing record TV audiences. Not surprisingly, throughout her rising career, Angelina has featured in prominent media outlets including TIME, CNN, BBC, and People while also performing on the U.S. network TV shows Little Big Shots and The View.
As well as singing before Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, charitable causes to which Angelina has given her talent include the Rainforest Alliance at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and Ein Herz für Kinder in Berlin where she helped raise over 21 Million Euros for children and families in need. This multi-talented singing prodigy has also written a successful, illustrated children’s book in her native Norway making Angelina the youngest published author in the country’s history. Based on the true story of when she was six years old, Angelina met a homeless, shoeless girl. After they talked for a long time, she gave the girl her shoes and vowed never to appear on stage again wearing shoes until all the world’s children had them. Since that time, Angelina has always performed barefoot in public. The reason they still take it fairly slowly is that she is only 16 years old - This in agreement with Republic Record, the family, and Angelina herself. She is now working on her record. Angelina has already sung in many countries, and all important people in the music industry know who she is. They only need to press the button when the time is right for the next step. No point in "burning out" a 16 year old jewel of a singer and I think many people forget how young she really is since she is so mature for her age! Angelina’s videos have received over 1 billion views on UA-cam and almost 2,5 billion on facebook. Give credit to Angelina Jordan by subscribing to her official UA-cam Channel !!
There's nothing off in this performance ! It's her appreciation of one of her favorite singers ! Angelina is doing what she does always singing the song the way she wants to ! This is her only take of this song ! She's phenomenal !! She's only twelve in this performance ! Her English is spot on as good as anyone' out there ! It may not be a perfect performance but it's so fantastic ! My god she is that good ! We love her !
I definitely think she had not practiced this song alot, it was not a finished performance but what we got was stunning. The richness and fullness in her voice and then belting out crystal clear high notes. What a talent, peerless
Yes! Those high notes (particularly early in the performance) were intensely powerful. And as I said in the review, the message of the song (obviously a love letter to her fans) and her commitment to that message was truly special. From that aspect I think I regard this as the best performance of hers I’ve seen (regardless of the slightly unpolished nature of the vocal performance). Thanks for watching and commeting.
A few months after this David Foster asked to sing at a benefit concert and there is a short clip of them working on this song. i am sure she does it better after that ,he is such a perfectionist. He wrote it , arranged it , and produced it for Whitney.
Please react to My Funny Valentine next. You can’t see her singing, but you therefore can concentrate more on her vocals in this one. So far as I’m concerned-perfection!
Hi! Thank you for reacting to this performance by Angelina. Others commenting have already told you the circumstances of how these recordings come about and how Angelina has in her head how she will sing a song but often change it "on the fly", so I will leave that type of comment behind and just be satisfied by saying that I admire your honesty. There are far too may people reacting to Angelina, and others, who calculate what the performer's fans want and "fake" it. They never receive my subscription and get an instant push on the Dislike button.,
The problem with the third line of the bridge is that the lyrics are: " I won't hold it back again..." and Angelina sings : " I don't want to hold it back again.." She innocently tries to cram 9 syllables into notes that are written for 7. For a non-native English speaker recording in her house on her own with a recorded track and killing it I might add, this is a major "no big deal". I'm 71 years old and she is more talented , unique and versatile than anyone I've ever laid ears on.
Angelinia arranges all her songs on utube usually in one take and the way she wants BUT not to mimic and be the original. That is why it sounds different.
We "Angels" like to describe her imperfections as perfect. I wouldn't change a thing about this performance! I am looking forward to the day that she performs this one again, when she will undoubtedly have more gas in the tank.
Yes, I'm always suspicious of 'perfection'. She ... she, is perfect. Am I contradicting myself? I love her - not her singing. Something like that! love to you.
I’m a huge Angelina fan but often times her pronunciation of certain words is off. I wouldn’t get upset at people for pointing it out. Some people get blinded and over protective. It takes nothing away from her performance and her ability to touch my soul with her singing. Don’t let over zealous fans get you down. I appreciate your review. Keep at it my man.
AJ never misses a beat, she sings to her own beat. Although she tries to be faithful to the original, we cannot compare her with Whitney, they are different artists. I see her calm, confident and controlling her breathing well, but I've read that it's not her comfort zone, that it's a bit forced, hell! That she is 12-13 years old and her vocal cords are half-formed! Someone please tell me who, of any age, has even come close to this quality, personally I don't know anyone, and I would appreciate someone clearing my doubts. What result would we have if this went through the arrangements of a good sound engineer in a studio, like the original album and the soundtrack of The Bodyguard? By the way, I'm of the general opinion that Whitney is one of the best singers of all time, but I have never heard her reach these octaves when she sang this song live. (The gods of music have her in their glory)
Yes you could say that she was gearig up for a pro career at that point. According to her uncle/manager he sold everything he had and moved to the US, scouting the waters in LA. The rest of the family soon followed. It took some time though to get her the opportunity of achieving the needed publicity push in the US. A fan later managed to get an interview with her guitar player at age 12/13 in LA, Ivan Mendez. Sounded to me that she loves to make it up on the way (she's that crazy good), so there's probably no rehearsing involved with this video, too.
She speaks perfect English with very little accent so we can deduce that the “dialect” thing you mentioned I think is more about Angelina manipulating the word structure to suit the emotion she’s trying to deliver. I really enjoyed your reaction..excellent. Thank you 🙏
It depends on what you mean by "perfect English". For many years, Received Pronunciation (RP) has been what is called the accent traditionally regarded as standard for British English. For me, as a person born in England and living in New Zealand since 1962, Angelina has an American English accent. See my comment in response to @Michael Amrose.
@@alberttenfootwhat I meant to say, and not stated well, is that to my ears Angelina doesn't have any traces of a nordic accent which I think this reactor was referring to when he mentioned dialect.
@@kevingood4644 Ah! I certainly agree that she has lost all her Norwegian accent, mores the pity. 😞 My apologies for reading into your comment, which wasn't there. As a matter of interest, do you think she has an American accent?
@@alberttenfoot No worries Albert..I have all the respect in the world for you. Yes I do think she has picked up a slight USA accent..she’s has musical ear so it’s not so surprising I think…
GREAT REVIEW! She was barely 13 when this was uploaded to YT. Agree with everything you said. She did drag behind the beat early in the song and that is a natural style for her and the part that bothered you a little does seem like she needed to catch up to the beat. If she had her own arrangement instead of a karaoke track this would not be an issue. When she performs with a guitarist she tells him to follow her and with a track she must follow the track. I am mostly impressed with the softer notes and nuances between the high notes, which she hit perfectly, and the landing of the song. You can also see in her face she struggles with her breathing but if you just listen to the song and not watch her it would be barely noticeable. She did use the camera very effectively as well but she has always been camera aware since very young. Here is her onstage performance of "FEELING GOOD" at 10 years old, almost 11. She owns the stage and you'll see how she knows to use the camera while performing her own arrangement of the song. This 10 year old performance is simply perfection! Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/p8kAL-sGJx8/v-deo.html Thank you, I really enjoyed this review!
Angelina is well known for creating a finished product in one take. We have no idea how much she practiced this song before making this video but it is quite likely she only did one take. Angelina challenged herself around her 13th birthday and did Whitney proud.
Angelina is ( especially for her age ) a very talented singer but, here, she is singing over a prerecorded track of hers, so , it's a second take at least. Her articulations doesn't match the words and sounds. This is not a critique... it's just a fact. 💕
It's rare to see Angelina push herself vocally to the edge as she does here. With her high musical IQ I'm sure she was pleased with this incredible performance,as a 12 yr old, especially knowing that one day she will easily eclipse it.Absolutely loved the reaction, the thought you put into it.
It's common when singing jazz to sing on the backbeat. She sang this song at a couple of charity events with David Foster (co-writer and producer of the song) so I'm sure if she records this again it will be perfect in the style she wants to sing.
....and that's what we come to realise after listening to Angelina for a while. She sings "in the style she wants to sing" as you put it because, for her, it is intuitively the way she feels the song deserves to be sung to release the total emotional content of the lyrics.
Yes there are 2 arrangements she has done at age 16. Please check out her black & White Studio version 👌 Also her LIVE. I would reccommend you watch her Performance last to see for yourself any differences to her studio. please react to these. links below #AngelinaJordanIhavenothingstudiolatest #AngelinaJordanIhavenothigLive
I just want to say that, while I agree she sings this with sincerity and commitment, I don't believe it's a "love letter to her fans." Rather, I believe it's a love letter to Whitney Houston. First, she always acknowledges and appreciates her influencers (those artists from whom she has learned so much). Also, she subtitled this video "a Whitney Houston Tribute." Finally, while some say she did this to prove to her doubters that she could belt, I believe it's equally likely she did this to show Whitney that she has learned to sing in her style -- as she has done with her covers of other artists.
It could be both. What he said certainly fits with the way she reaches out to the viewers during the performance, and with the deep affinity and gratitude she feels with her fans.
Good one George. If you don't mind, I like to take it a step higher - as we know, she enters another world when she sings (endless and full of happiness and so on) - as she has so clearly said. It is 'life' - oh, what to call it! Lao-tse described it as, 'the invisible creating the visible' - let's call it a 'being'. That One is in us - I think that's the One she is singing to. I now she waved to me! And suspect she was waving to you too. :)
@@jonathanparson1650 When I think about her "other world" the person that comes to mind is Eckhart Tolle. He would probably say that what she does is become totally present. Athletes call it being "in the moment" where there are no distractions, there's no worries, no ego or self-consciousness, no hurry, and creativity and peak performance just flows. That explains how she appears to be able to craft and caress every note effortlessly, how she can be so uninhibited. She seems to enter a different state of time. We are pulled into it, willingly.
Angelina says she goes to a different place, which she described as a beautiful, infinite world full of happiness. Fortunately for us, she loves to go there, and take us with her. I can't say that I know what this place is (or is like) but I believe many others, including philosophers and elite athletes, have tried to describe something similar. Whatever it is (and is like), it clearly is real for those who experience it directly.
this cover from Angelina is her out of comfort zone, but remember, she always sings songs, covers or originals,in her way, with accent, thats Angelina, and her cover of i put a spell on you shows her genius way with worlds,to make it special, and in this cover, with her strong voice, belting, shows her skill of great talent, and Angelina never try to sing like the original artist, she always sings song in her way, remember that,a amazing cover,12years old
This is far from a perfect performance, but it many ways it is one of AJ's most impressive videos. At 12 years old, she tackles an incredibly difficult song in homage to Whitney Houston -- one of AJ's role models -- who had perhaps the most pitch-perfect female voice in pop history. Hang in there through the negative trolls -- you have to say what you hear and what you feel. The vast majority of AJ fans can take it without griping.
I was very impressed by this performance overall. I hope that was clear. There some things technically, vocally that she had to work hard for, that’s true. I think I commented during the last chorus “breath” because it looked to me at least like she was struggling a bit with her breath control. But come on, like you said, this song is MASSIVE and she’s so young. I was overall blown away. Thanks for the encouragement. I have had some unkind comments in the past but he majority if the AJ fan base (like you) has been kind and quick to forgive me if I’m simply ignorant of a fact about young miss Jordan. I sincerely appreciate your graciousness.
As you will see, Angelina redefines (in large ways and small) many of the pieces that she chooses to cover. I think intentionality is always present even as Angelina here spots Whitney 16 years (13yo vs 29) and still goes toe-to-toe and note-for-note with her. Stay on her journey, your respect and awe is sure to grow as she is one of a kind! And not to put too fine of a point on it, if you want to hear "what's in your head" go listen to Whitney. It is neither Angelina's job nor intention to duplicate pitches/tempos/tones and styles
As an angel myself, and as a life long non-professional singer with some training, I agree with you, and go one further. She clearly had a stumble on the words and rhythm during that one phrase. But I don’t care one beat (see what I did there?). I loved this performance!
She told in an interview, its more difficult to sing Covers of well known Songs than sing own Songs, because you compare it to the original. Therefore she tried more and more her own version. Look at Billie Jean or California Dreaming, it sounds very different in her own style, more fixed on the Story. And of course Bohemian rhapsody 💃✌️
I think what the problem is you're expecting her to duplicate the song she doesn't do that she does it her way in the end product is always excellent !!!
I've never heard Whitney Houston perform this under the same conditions as Angelina! Still, some try to compare the two. Whitney, 29 yo, in a professional studio with sound technicians etc. An unknown number of shots, and maybe days later, it is done. Angelina, 12 yo, in a home studio, one shot, done! Of course we can compare, but I do not know if it serves any purpose. I appreciate both Whitney and Angelina. / A Swedish Viking

She decided to sing "I don't wanna hold it back again" versus simply "I won't hold it back again"; a couple of extra syllables. Difficult to say whether she changed it intentionally or just believed those to be the lyrics. As for rehearsing; she's not that perfectionist who sits and rehearses a UA-cam or IG upload. You'll often hear her make mistakes, especially when she is reading the lyrics (which I don't believe she is doing here) but her mistakes don't end up discarded like better-known singers are - she posts them anyway and moves on to something else. The two main guitarists she has used as accompanists in the past both attest to the fact that their sessions generally involved throwing ideas around until they arrived at a song they were vaguely familiar with. Once the chords were worked out and she decided on a tempo and other finer details, they would simply start the tape and see what came out. Rarely were there more than a couple of takes and any repeat was usually because the accompanist erred. When Angelina messes up, she is either unaware (pronunciation) or unfazed (cadence). but what separates her from the rest is she doesn't hide anything.
Totally agree with you. Angelina is the most transparently honest singer out there. She has complete self-confidence in herself as a person that she is prepared to reveal everything - "warts and all". I doubt there is another singer who would have the courage to do that?
Angelina has some nice live performances from outdoor, Norwegian summer festivals in 2017-19. Some of my favorites from those are "Loving You", "It's a Man's World", "When We We're Young". Also, her TV performance of her original song "Shield" from when she was 12 y.o. is cool.
Great reaction, now that your a fan, that makes you an Angel, Welcome to The Music World of Angelina Jordan! I don't mind the critiques, I'm a huge fan, but let's be honest, she is human, even though her singing makes one think she is from another Planet, LOL, God Bless!
I believe many of her covers when she was 12 years old and younger were done almost as 'homework assignments'. Many, we are told, were done in one or two takes. Whether she tasked herself with these or they were given by a teacher/coach I do not know. The guitarist in some of them has described in interviews how they were created - Angelina browsing through her phone and finding a song, asking if he knew it, them spending 10 minutes or so working out an arrangement, then turning the camera on. In these covers and others with pre-recorded backing she seems to push herself in a different way in each one.
You need to jump to this past year. Angelina's past ...so much talent and great to review and listen and get invested that someone so young can be that talented. However, the 16yr old Angelina is the one that will show you where she's going. Both her original music, and her covers (including her Tic Toc's). from ages 15 through almost 1/2 year @16...is what you need to check out next.
I really enjoyed your reaction and analysis. Angelina did this much earlier in the same year she did Bohemian Rhapsody on AGT-C (which was actually recorded in Oct-Nov, 2019) while she was 13. Although it is one of my favorites of her performances because she handles it so well, it is not a song I have ever really liked much. Also, having watched many versions performed by Whitney Houston, I have never seen a live version where she hits the high notes (or, even attempts to) that she did in the movie "The Bodyguard" and that Angelina did in this performance. Agree with you about that phrasing you repeatedly rewound and commented on. It seems awkward. Oh well, Angelina is famous for doing this kind of stuff in one or two takes, while reading the lyrics. She has gut-wrenchingly amazing skills.
Very original analysis. I enjoyed it. No worries about the critique. That's why we tune in. I've heard this probably 100+ times, recognized the same rushed line but never knew it was a change from the original. In her defense, jazz singers often add, subtract words and syllables which is what makes jazz so interesting to listen to. Nice job. Looking forward to more reactions.
Hi dear Brandon I’m from Mexico and I follow in your UA-cam channel and I love your emotional reactions❤️ more than anything when you react Lara Fabián, ohhh my God I’m a huge fan of this espectacular, magistral an amazing artist, for me the best!! Please react to a video from her. The name of the video is Lara Fabián-Medley live-Chabada-1996, this video is from a tv show from France and the people call for phone and they ask Lara sing them, this video it’s fantastic a piano and her voice only... don’t miss it please!! Kisses and hugs!!😘😘
You never get angry from me . Lol .I agree with your reaction .I thought she worked hard in this video than any when I first saw it a couple of years ago .I would love to see her redo this now that she has grown a lot .
Angelina has performed ‘I Have Nothing’ three times (I’m grouping all the live versions together). The original- ua-cam.com/video/eTcvvO6B3Io/v-deo.html - has 14.5 million views and the live version - ua-cam.com/video/AqtIVYFjapQ/v-deo.html - has 1.3 million views in less than 3 weeks, it is the Official version - ua-cam.com/video/iX0g99jN26U/v-deo.html - has more than 200,000 views in three days. Not only is the Official version the best it has the potential to vastly outstrip the other versions by the end of the year if not earlier. I personally think the Official version is better than Whitney Houston’s version.
Her jazz background let's her play loosely with a "beat". Edit: no anger in my comment. ;~) Just be kind to the passionate angels here. I also hear most of the song being "off" beat. Honestly I don't think it's from not rehearsing, but just her style.
This is her 12-year-old version which is great. She sang this in the same key as Whitney and you could mesh them together and there would be almost no difference note for note. She redid this last year. 1st she change the key and brought it down 3 semitones. That allows her to use more of the depth of her voice which Whitney doesn't have. 2nd: She now owns this song. You can find both a concert version and a 'live' recording with Rob Christie on the piano.
I’ve listened to her rendition of this song several times, and I always thought there was something screwy about the following line…(however, I understand the point you are trying to make about her being a bit behind, but this is done on purpose). At the beginning, I think she is doing it to sit on the back step of the notes , however, If you listen At 04.06 , I’ve just listened to those few bars on Whitney’s version. Whitney sings “I won’t hold it back again”, and angelina sings “I don’t wanna hold it back again”, which means that she’s technically a word too many, for the notes available, which makes it sound very rushed.
This one she did it to 13 second time she did it was 16 and she did a live several times in Norway live concerts as she considered one of the best singers in the world now it’s on Republic Road age of 14. She really several albums when she was at
This version at age 12 can be mapped to Whitney's voice perfectly. Later she lowered the key by 3 semitones which allows her to better use her lower register. There are 3 versions of this, a video, a studio recording and in concert. As for her timing it shows you are not familiar with jazz (It wasn't a language problem. She speaks perfect English and has done so since she was 4 or 5) . Some of Frank Sinatras band members hated it because he frequently changed the pace of songs during a performance and it is common in jazz. It is also common in jazz for singers to change vowel sounds and to not finish off a word to accommodate the way they want to sound. Except for nasal and lip consonants (ng and em) consonants shut off the air flow. You don't hear this kind of voice in stage, opera, rock or country but you'll find it in blues, jazz and R&B.
I've commented before on your AJ videos and support your views either way. Some vocal coaches have praised her for her timing, comparing her to Sinatra for singing off time, even to the annoyance of the bands. Other vocal coaches have observed the same, sometimes critically. The question is how much this takes away from the listeners enjoyment. Typical listeners, such as yourself, have been blown away by this performance and, for some, moved to tears. I concede that near the end she seemed a little tired vocally, but the techniques she displayed overall were impressive. I still encourage and support your honesty. For me, as a subscriber, I'm weighing whether your reviews add anything for me. Still on board.
She's been speaking English since she was 2 or 3. There's a clip of her when she was 5 showing off her home in Norway and she speaks English as well as any American 5-year-old. She does substitute vowel sound to suit her voice and control of her breath. There's only one place where I think she screws up. When she sings "House of the Rising Sun" she sings "My mother was a tailor, she suuud my new blue jeans" instead of 'soood' my new blue jeans. The O vowel is a much easier note to carry a strong voice than the E.
Tchibadi tchabadi, this performance is absolutly amazing, 12 years old, for me better as the original...and its at home not in a studio like whitney...with many records, angelina makes in one time a masterpiece for ever, i love it, her emotion with the whole body, unbelievebel haeavenly 👑♥️🌹🌟
I enjoy honest reactions. Please continue. Art is subjective and I respect other's opinions, especially from those who are educated and experienced. Only "fallen angels" would ever leave a nasty comment. She seemed "off the beat" because she sang extra words that are not in the original, creating a cadence that sounded rushed. I know some "angels" out there will disagree, but she is not perfect! (it's impossible to get any closer, though) She does make mistakes. She sings extra words in the 2 versions of "It's a Man's World" (although it has little effect on the cadence) She got some of the words wrong in her "Gloomy Sunday" audition. Does any of it detract from her prodigious talent? NO! This girl is, imho, THE GOAT singer. And the best part is, there are decades of songs to come.
dave here. The reactions were on target. Okay, few too many interruptions but accurate. You caught up to it being a great voice. You like Celine Dion. You need to hear the Prayer, both by Pentatonix (best) and Marcellito Pomoy (just unbelievable). You also need to hear Home Free because you will appreciate the voices and arrangements. Have fun.
If I may. In checking this out, it seems to me that Angelina was forced to do that, for if you check the copyright lyrics it reads "I will hold it back again" which doesn't make sense, so she apparently 'corrected' it. Listening to WH's original version I'm not sure if she sings "I will" or "I won't" which would make a difference. It would seem that AJ saw the copyright version and fixed it with 'I don't wanna' probably not thinking of 'I won't'.
Angelina Jordan has been a professional since age 8 and is very comfortable in front of the camera - A great example is this performance of Feeling Good at Age 10 - Notice how she is aware of the camera and the audience and pays attention to both: ua-cam.com/video/p8kAL-sGJx8/v-deo.html
I don't think they moved to the states yet so this was done before Bohemian Rhapsody and her signing Republic Records. This might have been done in her home.
Thanks Brandon for the reaction. I think i'm in the minority here. I just did't find that so exceptionally spectacular. She has quite a few rushes and lates rhytmically, maybe because she concentrates those notes to hit. She hit those high notes yes, but it was a little shaky here and there. And i know, everybody is now pointing out she was 12 at the time. That may be so. But Glennis Grace was 11 when she sang those Whitney songs. And never took any singing lessons. To give a little perspective. And look now, Glennis is probably the best there is today. BUT...About Angelina, she has a very Big chance to be a really great singer if all goes well in the future. She is musically talented, that's for sure. But it's still a long way.
Dude she's not trying to duplicate the song she doesn't do that. She changes a word or two in a lot of her songs.. and she mispronounces a word once in a while. Most of all she does it her way and most people are fine with that !! Oh and BTW she speaks five languages !!!
Have a record of the edge of 14 with republic records makes in Los Angeles California should be going to private school in Los Angeles California and performing her record company republic records. They sang only the best of the best she’s in really really good hands 14 she signed
Go to Oslo Norway, where she’s singing this song to live. I don’t have a link with me but you can file I was Laura Angelina Jordan. I have nothing you’ll find it it’s very popular she’s 16 and this one anything
She went professional she was 14 and sign for a public records. Shortly afterwards you did that I got talent champions think that was Lauryn Hill brick road hello song but she turned professional days you’re 14 when she’s having republic records.
Who can go from the heights of Whitney Houston and also be as relaxed doing the lowest of continuous low register singing that she does when recording an Elvis gospel classic 'How Great Thou Art'? There is no one on the planet who has ever shown me they can do something so versatile.
@@TTkingsman You're like others who can never give me one name of any singer......ever......who comes anywhere near the intricate singing of different genres that she has posted on You Tube. Time to face reality, for you're living in some of a fantasy world ot just like to spout out nonsense.
@@ridgemanron Firstly, i don't know in what planet you are living to not know any other vocalists singing different genres. Secondly, it's not the main thing to sing different styles or different kind of music. If you do your own thing great that is enough. Angelina just have a long way to become a great singer. She is talented and she has potential. I'm not so sure of her voice though. She is young so it remains to be seen... If you haven't heard of Lara Fabian or Glennis Grace, i suggest you to seek in YT. It's a good place to start. For Angelina to become as good as those two...well... For now...i doubt it very much. She just doesn't have that voice. But hey, i might be wrong about this...she is still very young.
@@TTkingsman She has been called the most impressive singing talent by none other than Quincy Jones who said he hasn't been this impressed by anyone since Michael Jackson. You show me where these singers you mention, who I have heard, compiled a catalog of music as diverse as Angelina in her 'over 175' presentations that include Jazz, Soul, R&B, Country, Gospel, Pop and when compared by vocal expert Andreas Grussl to Adele in his video 'Is This Better Than Adele', regarding 'Easy On Me', he breaks the song down, part by part, with each singer being examined and proves Angelina performs the song far superior to Adele. Now, I don't know if you comprehend the greatness of Adele, but the world does......and Angelina can 'out sing' her while still being a teenager. Angelina is the most versatile singer of different genre singing that this planet has ever produced and it's laughable that you could discount this ability in a singer which we both know, no one else has ever matched. The only reason you imply that it isn't important,is because you know full well that there isn't a singer you could ever hope to find who can match this young girl.
@@ridgemanron Wow. You really are a fan of her. And that's okay. But if you say her studio rendition of easy on me is better than Adele's...i rest my case. I suggest you listen that again with ears that not belong to a big fan. Versatile...hmm maybe. Her jazz, soul, R&B and Gospel covers are however quite similar stylishly so it does not matter what type of music the original is...That's her style of singing. And like i said it's not the main thing to sing all genres. But if you like her, that's good. I have a little different taste and opinion of a singers voice and singing style. Those two women i mentioned...i'll stick to them. I don't think they need any catalog anymore...
Hi, thank you for your honest POV. Angie has too many gifts & talents to mention. She uses her AP ability when she wants, she uses back phrasing when she wants like she did in this song, she'll even do tremolo or do her customize laryngeal vibrato with 3 semi tones when she wants etc etc. She's a kid doing a tribute to WH & at her age while still acknowledges us the fans. She did this in her music corner (as she calls it) in her bedroom. Just think WH was 29 with a full grown voice & several takes to get the movie sound tract down. Even in concert it wasn't as good, even though she sounded great in concert. I know this isn't her best, for she was pressing her upper limits & her vocal stamina. She was raw & open with us. Angie likes to play & experiment with music & sounds etc etc to use & or try for the future, Most artist would never do or try this. It was just get deleted. Angie is upfront & original & honest with her fans. We have seen so many of her songs & what she does with them Even when she's walking in a car garage singing acapella or down the neighborhood street. (remember English was her 3rd language she learned out of the 4+ she knows.) Alot of us do respect you POV & some o get but hurt & some are just fake Angie fans & or trolls, but I think you already know that. You should try these one from Angie. “Lovin' You” - Proysenfestivalen 21.07.2017 Angie’s (11) from “Just Want To Make Love To You” originally written by Willie Dixon 1954 (There’s the Trimmed & enhanced version ua-cam.com/video/qvmrvEdYSOY/v-deo.html & covered by Muddy Waters & a lot of other big name blues singers also. Angie changed the lyrics & made it more age appropriate & also made it really awesome a bit modern style blues with a nostalgic feel also. You’ll see she’s opening her concert with this song. “A Natural Woman” Acoustic (Aretha Franklin Tribute) ua-cam.com/video/rt6KhBxiaDo/v-deo.html she’s 12.5 yo.
Yes your closing comments say it all. Technically perfect, no, beautiful performance - yes! I have a feeling that this was put together rather quickly. Angelina was meeting up with David Foster (not the first time) at a charity event in May 2019. I suppose it's only fitting as she had never sung one of his songs before. David did not need to be impressed, he was already a fan having heard Angelina sing "What a difference a day makes" back in 2015 in Singapore ( then 9 years old). Angelina has used backing tracks many times, but generally her best performance are with live music, often just acoustic guitar or piano. There are so many performance to choose from, you have a long journey ahead of you if you wish to really understand the talent and passion of Angelina Jordan.
Great reaction. On that line that sounded a bit off, I think the problem is it had more syllables than the previous rapid ones, and there were too many to fit comfortably into the beat and the amount of time for it. But maybe she would have gotten it to sound better if she had rehearsed more.
And that's crazy that you caught that.. but you are right..
I subscribed !
People need to calm down :-)
Now, there ARE a few things to consider in this performance. Like you said, she sings to a karaoke track. This is the result of a one or two take recording. She is recording from her house, without any kind of post processing. She was very late 12 or had JUST turned 13 here. As we all know, the lungs are FAR from fully developed at that age. Now, at age 16 (as of January 10th), her lungs probably still aren't, scary as it may sound :-)
When hearing this performance, we will have a very vivid memory of the original recording, done by a 29 year old Whitney Houston (R.I.P.), in an extremely costly studio production, where each and every (if any) minor imperfection has been polished off.
AGE 6!

Suspicious minds she killed it
You haven’t listened to enough Angelina to fully understand her style.
That's right. She's infallible already at age 12.
100% agree ! Another good example would be her cover of I'll always love you, it's not a Whitney song but her cover is more known than the original so it's a good way to see what Angelina does when she arranges a Whitney song. She was a bit younger than here and only had a guitar besides her.

Great reaction to our Angelina Jordan.👍🏼💕🎼.
Thank you. This one was special. I’m excited to see what’s next.
Absolutely beautiful!!!😍😍😍
They never receive my subscription and get an instant push on the Dislike button.,
Beautiful... there's NOTHING this little girl can't sing!
You haven’t listened to enough Angelina to fully understand her style.😊😊😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👍👍
Nice and best reaction..I love her singing songs.👍
That Angelina smile is enough to make the flowers bloom!😍
My apologies for reading into your comment, which wasn't there. As a matter of interest, do you think she has an American accent?
@@alberttenfoot No worries Albert..I have all the respect in the world for you. Yes I do think she has picked up a slight USA accent..she’s has musical ear so it’s not so surprising I think…
her cover of 'I Will Survive' by Gloria Gaynor at 10 is very impressive .
Thank you, I really enjoyed this review!
@@alberttenfoot Absolutely! If you compare AJ with WH's singing of the verse, AJ's version has much more feeling and is not as structured.
Yes there are 2 arrangements she has done at age 16. Please check out her black & White Studio version 👌 Also her LIVE. I would reccommend you watch her Performance last to see for yourself any differences to her studio. please react to these. links below

It is common for her to lay behind the beat, play with the pacing. She does this stylistically to my estimation.
A Swedish Viking
tell me you're not comparing Angelina Jordan to Whitney Houston. not even a Whitney's League especially with falsetta which Angelina has none

You're absolutely right about the 'her own arrangement ' bit. That would really blow it out of the universe.
She is known for doing her performances in 1 take. Rarely 2 and almost never 3.
Republic Records says she is 1 of only 3 in the world who can do that.
I couldn't have said it better and thanks to you I don't have to.
Totally agree with you. Angelina is the most transparently honest singer out there. She has complete self-confidence in herself as a person that she is prepared to reveal everything - "warts and all". I doubt there is another singer who would have the courage to do that?
You said it! Not a mistake, just a rephrasing. Angelina will take her liberties, big and small.
Angelina has some nice live performances from outdoor, Norwegian summer festivals in 2017-19. Some of my favorites from those are "Loving You", "It's a Man's World", "When We We're Young". Also, her TV performance of her original song "Shield" from when she was 12 y.o. is cool.
It doesn't matter. She always do her own thing. She always slow down her song. Just loving what she do.
Fantastic reaction and review, thanks so much for sharing! 💖

Is there a compilation of her TikTok’s floating around UA-cam somewhere?
She does a nice arrangement of I Will Always Love You. There's a rehearsal video of that with live guitarist
Like your style insights and critique
Very original analysis. I enjoyed it. No worries about the critique. That's why we tune in. I've heard this probably 100+ times, recognized the same rushed line but never knew it was a change from the original. In her defense, jazz singers often add, subtract words and syllables which is what makes jazz so interesting to listen to. Nice job. Looking forward to more reactions.
A talent beyond this mortality.

Please excuse us AJ fans, we're not angry, just passionate.
Edit: no anger in my comment. ;~)
Just be kind to the passionate angels here.
Whitney sings “I won’t hold it back again”, and angelina sings “I don’t wanna hold it back again”, which means that she’s technically a word too many, for the notes available, which makes it sound very rushed.
that explains it! TY

This is a tribute to her fans.💗
She's been speaking English since she was 2 or 3. There's a clip of her when she was 5 showing off her home in Norway and she speaks English as well as any American 5-year-old. She does substitute vowel sound to suit her voice and control of her breath. There's only one place where I think she screws up. When she sings "House of the Rising Sun" she sings "My mother was a tailor, she suuud my new blue jeans" instead of 'soood' my new blue jeans. The O vowel is a much easier note to carry a strong voice than the E.
No own arrangement I think she meant it to be a tribute
(it's impossible to get any closer, though)
She does make mistakes.
She sings extra words in the 2 versions of "It's a Man's World" (although it has little effect on the cadence)
She got some of the words wrong in her "Gloomy Sunday" audition.
Does any of it detract from her prodigious talent? NO!
This girl is, imho, THE GOAT singer. And the best part is, there are decades of songs to come.
Call back phrasing is popular in jazz

It’s called backspacing she’s jazz artist back from originally I stay in jazz all the time but she said they were they know it’s called back
She is not a native English speaker. Her mother tongue is Norwegian, How do you rate her as a performer in a language that is not her own?
Oh and BTW she speaks five languages !!!

these singers you mention, who I have heard, compiled a catalog of

Jazz, Soul, R&B, Country, Gospel, Pop and when compared by vocal
expert Andreas Grussl to Adele in his video 'Is This Better Than Adele',
regarding 'Easy On Me', he breaks the song down, part by part, with each
singer being examined and proves Angelina performs the song far superior
to Adele. Now, I don't know if you comprehend the greatness of Adele, but
the world does......and Angelina can 'out sing' her while still being a teenager.
Angelina is the most versatile singer of different genre singing that this
planet has ever produced and it's laughable that you could discount this
ability in a singer which we both know, no one else has ever matched. The
only reason you imply that it isn't important,is because you know full well that

As I understand it, Angelina called this cover a Tribute to Whitney Houston, so there’s not much (if any) rearrangement to the song.
Hi, thank you for your honest POV. Angie has too many gifts & talents to mention.
She uses her AP ability when she wants, she uses back phrasing when she wants like
she did in this song, she'll even do tremolo or do her customize laryngeal vibrato with
3 semi tones when she wants etc etc. She's a kid doing a tribute to WH & at her age while
still acknowledges us the fans. Angie likes to play & experiment with music & sounds etc etc
to use & or try for the future, Most artist would never do or try this. It was just get deleted.
Angie is upfront & original & honest with her fans. We have seen so many of her songs
& what she does with them Even when she's walking in a car garage singing acapella or
down the neighborhood street. (remember English was her 3rd language she learned
out of the 4+ she knows.) Alot of us do respect you POV & some o get but hurt & some
are just fake Angie fans & or trolls, but I think you already know that. You should try these
one from Angie. “Lovin' You” - Proysenfestivalen 21.07.2017 Angie’s (11) from
“Just Want To Make Love To You” originally written by Willie Dixon 1954
(There’s the Trimmed & enhanced version ua-cam.com/video/qvmrvEdYSOY/v-deo.html & covered by Muddy Waters & a lot of other big name blues singers also.
Good reaction
Great reaction. On that line that sounded a bit off, I think the problem is it had more syllables than the previous rapid ones, and there were too many to fit comfortably into the beat and the amount of time for it. But maybe she would have gotten it to sound better if she had rehearsed more.
