For those of you who have a dirty habit of picking at things to bitch about - you can pronounce ‘Cesta’ as ‘sesta’ (Basque) or ‘thesta’ (true Spanish) - so I did NOT pronounce it wrong.
Ninh Ly damn Ninh roasting the fuck out of the haters
Ninh Ly Took me two takes to see that the cestas are worn like a glove and not held like a racket. Nice video!
I just thought I'd put in a preemptive strike against anyone trying to bitch about one insignificant detail that I may or may not have gotten wrong.
It's getting to the point where these haters are becoming extremely predictable with what they're trying to come at me with.
Cheers dude.
Yes, the Cestas are handmade and cost a fortune. They've worn like a glove and attach to the wrist.
Both "seseo" and "distiction" modalities of pronunciation are "True Spanish" and accepted by the RAE.
What I understood:
1- pick the ball
2- YEET THE BALL
Ummm, yes.
You hero
YEET!
Ninh Ly and no
1-pixk up the ball
2-yeet the ball into the wall
3-watch ball bounce
4- pray you leave the court with a full set of teeth
I went to watch Jai Alai a few times when I was stationed in Miami. I had a hard time understanding it then, but this put it in a better format and helped.

That's because it IS Street Fighter Music. Casino Stage Theme (remix of Balrog) from SFV.

As an amateur pelotari in Miami I'm grateful for you doing this video. Thank you :)
My only criticism is that Jai Alai is MUCH older than the gambling aspect that surrounds round robin play.

Never ever heard of this sport. Still cool though.
Not many people have. It's only played in select parts of the world, but used to be so much more popular.
Ninh Ly why do you think it's not as popular anymore?
It found a niche as a gambling sport, but as other methods of gambling became popular and easier to access, Jai Alai fell by the wayside. Also, a players strike in the 80's all but ended the sport in the US. Shame really.
Ninh Ly Ahh, I see. That would make sense. It is a shame really. It's an intense sport. Real exciting to watch.
By the way, Thank You Ninh for all your outstanding work. I enjoy these. Been trying your tip about building a good rapport at work by using people's first name when speaking to them and it does work. :)
Ah cool, I'm glad my self help advice is useful to people. Great stuff!
The sport is also popular in South Florida in the USA (a jai alai game is seen in the opening sequence of the 1984-89 NBC police series Miami Vice).
This is an exciting sport to watch because of the sheer speed involved.
Yep it certainly is. In fact, I think Florida is the only state that plays it now.
I think it's pretty cool - and apparently it's an extremely difficult sport to play!
They use to play in Daytona....next to the track. Also was a dog race track there....not sure if still is?
Tampa had a jai alai fronton as well. Cigar City Brewing makes an IPA called Jai Lai.
Morgasm172 lmao is was very popular in Miami, it’s in casinos. Miami 1980s for sure

This sport was the answer to a question on "Hollywood Squares" (otherwise known as "Celebrity Squares" in Britain), which featured a rather racy joke answer. Here's the question asked to Joan Rivers, followed by the joke answer.
"Joan, you're watching balls go back and forth at speeds of up to a hundred and sixty miles an hour. In what sport is this?"
"Jogging."
Don't worry, she gave jai alai as her real answer, which the contestant agreed with.
Ha, that's cool! Joan Rivers ... what a gal. RIP missus.

This is possibly one of the most terrifying ball sports in existence, due to the hardness of the ball and the speed at which it can travel (record of 188 mph/302 kph). I used to watch broadcasts of Miami Jai Alai when I lived in New Orleans, and saw a number of players get badly injured by misplaying shots.

A sport where never in my 24 years of living on this planet have I ever thought this sport would ever exist until today thank you Ninh!!! does sound like it had some sort of southwestern Asian or some sort of middle east origin.
Believe it or not, Jai Alai is Basque (the dialect of language between France and Spain) for 'Merry Festival'. And yes, this does exist predominantly there. It was popular in the US especially as a gambling sport before it died a horrible death in the late 70's & 80's. A players strike all but ended the sport in the US and only a handful of working stadiums can be found in Florida.
I suppose you meant "marginalized" language with the term dialect. Cause how it was treated during the dictatorship of Franco I could get that pejorative term.
But if you strictly meant dialect as a variation between french and spanish that is so wrong. Basque is far older than spanish, french or even latin. Fun fact, it's origin remains unknown.
Its origin is in the basque country, a region in north spain - south france, in the west pyrinees, the mountains that separate spain and france, although I guess who knows hahaha. It is a quite isolated region, it has a"always" been here, but hey... auskalo! hahaha
Basque is not a dialect though... although I too dont get exactly what you mean by dialect. It has little in common with any other language in europe itself so... this is no catalan or galician where you can see similarities with the other languages that come from latin... this is completely different. Fun fact, this is how it is written... try to compare hahaha.
" Kaixo! Zer moduz zaude? Ni oso ondo nago! Atzo amarekin joan nintzen supermerkatura, eta gauza asko erosi genituen: piperrak, tomateak, tipula eta abar. Okela pixka bat ere bai. Gero nire arrebarekin festa batera joan nintzen, arrebak ez zuen bakarrik joan nahi nonbait, beraz azkenean harekin joan nintzen. Ei, zergatik ez, ezta? "
You are confusing Portuguese and Gallego (the latter spoken in a region adjacent to Basque country), which are widely accepted as languages with joint Spanish and French roots, with Basque, which is a completely standalone language. None of those languages are dialects. Basque is furthermore a language isolate - whereas Spanish, French, Portuguese and Gallego are all Indo-European languages from the Romance family of languages, Basque is unrelated to any other language in the world.

Here ua-cam.com/video/cNbZk1MkJ9A/v-deo.html this should help to understand it a little better
Not hard to understand really. Objective is the throw the ball back to the front wall with only 1 bounce and make your opponent miss. You can angle your shot off the side wall just have to make sure the ball doesn't land out of bounds if you do. Off the back wall over your head is called a rebote, ball is still in motion, so you would catch it and throw it back to the front wall still trying to make your opponent miss ua-cam.com/video/Nm7bfLVqOxU/v-deo.html

Very well done.
BTW, for those who talk 'knowingly' about the 'fixed' aspect, when I show people who think that way my analytical software, it takes less than 60 seconds for them to STFU.
Permanently!
Jai-alai is genuine, and if you work hard to understand handicapping factors (as a chess master might study opening theory) you can out-analyze your competition and win. FACT.
There are at least a handful of us wizards who LOVE this game and understand it at a deep level. Player skills, partner affinities, post position, simulations, and of course, the HUGE impact of the Spectacular 7 scoring system.

I think if this sport is to make a comeback in the U.S., they'd need to mix in set-based matches/tournaments with the round robin. Round robin and alleged fixing of wagered games (along with the strike) is what killed jai-alai in the U.S.. The best Basque players in the world playing 3-set matches would bring in patrons without the need to bet on games, the players always play to win, and hence the quality of play is far better. (It's rare to see really good points in wagered round robin play. But it's very common in matches in France and Spain.) This would bring in the fans, as a true spectator sport. It is like watching Roger Federer playing Rafael Nadal with cestas.
There are a lot of full-length Cesta Punta matches on UA-cam. The matches from Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz are addicting to watch. A full match usually lasts a little over an hour.
I totally agree!
It's a good sport and it's doing well in the Basque region.
It's a shame the players strike killed it in the USA, but I believe it can make a comeback.
I think they have to market and promote the sport a lot better and make it more exiting for spectators to watch.
But otherwise, it's a great game with a lot of skill involved!
Thanks for your input.
The player's strike alone didn't kill it... The fact that gambling was opening up on the east coast (Especially in Miami) through slots and table games, coupled with the fact that a bunch of new professional sports teams started around the time of the strike killed it.
It was a perfect storm. Also... MANY of the players in Basque still play in Dania, Miami, or Mexico.
Mexico even built a new fronton this year in the Federal District. The sport may live on elsewhere, but thanks to recent legislation in Florida Jai Alai is probably going to die in the next two years.
And that's coming from someone who plays twice a week in the only Amateur Fronton left in the USA (North Miami).
Wow crap, that bad huh?
Music2Die4 I have never heard of Jai-Alai until today. I'm familiar with LaCrosse and am a fan thereof, but because you recommended a few games, I'm going to watch and see how a full match plays out. Thank you for your recommendations on worthwhile games to check out 👍✌

Does the second bounce have to be inbounds, or is it sort of like ping pong where if the first bounce is in place the other team has to return it before the second bound (anywhere)? I'm surprised I'm not seeing more balls exiting the court off the right side.
Yes, the first bounce has to be within the court of play. If it bounces twice anywhere (including out of bounds), the point is scored.

This must be where we get the Street version of " Handball" that is played in the south and south west. The rules are simular but with a large rubber ball and just hands
Yes exactly. You'll find games with a common heritage and played similarly. This, handball, wallball, racquetball and gaelic handball are all similarly played.

As a Basque myself I find it funny that you call the sport jai alai, since jai alai is just the name of a "fronton" (you called it cancha). Which literally translates to happy party. Probably because the first fronton in America was called that way.
This modality is just one more of the Basque pilota. The overall rules are the same on each modality but the material used differs. For example, you can play Basque pilota that is the same but you have to hit the ball with your bare hands, pala (a wooden racket with no strings), remonte (similar to cesta punta but you cannot catch the ball with the cesta)...
That's what it's predominantly known as in the Western World.
I know that in in other parts, it's 'Basque Pelota'.

I remember watching Miami Vice and in the intro of the theme there is a short instance where Jai Alai is shown. Now it seems when that show was made in the mid 1980s. Florida or Miami more specifically was a stronghold of Jai Alai. But I am assuming nearly 40 years later. The sport has died out and is not played anymore by Americans in Florida. It is now a forgotten sport at least in the USA. Maybe back in the 1980s it was played in the U.S. but not anymore.
Oh by the way, nice video, well explained. Keep on the good work!
Thanks man.

Great video!
As a Spanish speaking person, some parts were funny.
The ball is called a ball, the court is called a court, and the pointy basket is called pointy basket. :D

Totally fun!
Is it just my weird memory or weren't they playing something similar to this in a scene in tron? Hand basket and all?
Edit: Yes ua-cam.com/video/MOllAzeZpuU/v-deo.html
Yeah I remember that one too.
Thats correct and they also play it in a Bud Spencer Movie
Also Mr Burns plays Jai Alai in a Simpsons episode after he receives a blood transfusion from Bart 😁

This is super cool
Hell yeah it is.
too much space needed for 2 vs 2 sport.
You could argue the same for Golf.
Well done. Thanks.
Thanks Peter, I appreciate the comment!
You check out the H2H this morning?
Draft picks at Magic City Jai alai are coming up in Aug. for the next season of Battle court.
I approve of the constant usage of fighting game music.
Thanks! Well spotted!

Carl! I can bet on how far away you throw Samanta next time! Mommy is going to make a good chunk of change, Mongo.
Kidding aside, I came across this sport through Dungeon Crawler Carl, a litRPG series where one of the protagonists is given this skill as part of the story. Such a cool sport!

Great video Ninh! Here's a suggestion - I know it isn't a very popular sport but you should look into creating a video about Tchoukball. It looks interesting and fun. Although I've never played it before. You do great work, and if you're planning on do something else with your videos just ignore this comment. You've helped me with so many sports, and I'd like to say thanks again for a great video. Thanks again. :)
Tchoukball a pseudo-sport that I have virtually no interest in.
Just like Quidditch, 360ball, Spikeball, BoTaoshi, Extreme Ironing, or some of the other garbage sports that's been requested.
Unless there's an overwhelming demand for it, I don't see it happening.
Oh, ok thanks for responding.

God, this game is awesome!
Wish this game exist in here, Southeast Asia.
It's played in some parts. The Philippines I believe have a Jai Alai court.
Yes it exists but as of the moment it is closed. Don't worry it'll be back very soon, maybe 2020 in Philippines. I will be playing as a pro too :)
I learned something new today.

Ive know of Jai Alai since I was a kid, just never looked into. But thanks to The Office Blokes reacting to your vids, I thought I'd stop by and see if you had one explaining the rules. At one time it was considered the fastest sport iirc.

It's actually quite an enthralling game to watch if you know what you're looking for. Shame it lacks popularity.

Great Battle court today. Wall warriors and renegades play. Tomorrow at 5
Sir, I Really like your videos. This Sport, "Pelota Vasca" in Spanish or "Basque Ball" in English, as it is also called (because of It's origin in the Basque region of Spain and France), is played on an Arena building called a "Frontón". There used to be a very nice one in my city called "Frontón Palacio Jai Alai", in Tijuana Mexico since 1947 until it went out of business in 2002. But still, It was played a lot here (and gambled on too), plenty of top players ("Pelotari" or "Pelotaris" plural) from Mexico and the US at the time played here (since Tijuana is a border town right across San Diego California it had audiences from both countries). After a renovation the building was kept intact on the outside (to preserve it as a part of this City's History), but inside it was changed to a Concert Hall venue. It was one of the places that made the "Avenida Revolución" Street Famous.
By the way, some of the variants of play have names like "Pelota Paleta", "Cesta Punta" or "Frontenis". And yes .... "Pelota" means "Ball" and "Cancha" mean "Court" in Spanish also "Cesta" means "Basket" and the Front Wall where the Pelotaris bounce the ball is called "Frontis".
Also on a different note, Back in the 80's I used to watch the "Miami Vice" Tv series, the Show's opening used to show a little bit of the sport being played with the famous Jan Hammer Instrumental (Crockett's Theme) playing on the background.
Yes, technically all your points are correct. I think I have a video on Basque Pelota coming up soon.
And thanks!

How is the round robin lineup or post order determined? Do players associated get a salary or is it based on winning matches?
ua-cam.com/video/VF_T65rVNH4/v-deo.html
they get a base salary and prize money for winning the game coming in second or third.
Thanks!
Anytime bro.
