    Hi, I'm Dr Tasha
I’m a Doctor, Breast Cancer Surgeon and Medical Educator. After 20 years helping people to understand and overcome breast health problems, I’ve seen first hand the fear, frustration and stress that my patients go through.

Doctor Tasha, thank you so much for covering lobular. Its such a misunderstood disease, that behaves very differently from ductal. With a high rate of recurrence in 15-30 years post diagnosis.
I'm young to have it, and feel a bit like its a ticking clock now, my personal situation means my 10-15 year survival stats are 50% (source: Swedish whole population data: and the mortality only includes deaths caused by lobular BC, rather than all cause deaths).
For a BC that accounts for 12-15% of cases, it only gets 1% of BC funding research. I can't find anywhere in the UK that does FES PET scans (flouroestradiol, rather than FDG PET), yet these are standard in usa, Canada, Australia, europe, etc.... and the gold standard for finding even micro-metastases.

I would like to share an MRI will NOT accurately show where in the breast a lobular ca linkage is present.. my MRI showed 1 location of lobular cells. When surgery was done there were actually 3 areas of lobular areas within the breast, with 1 area measuring 5.5 cm.. staging went from 2 to 3 and mastectomy being needed.

Unfortunately, even the best scans we have at the moment will not be able to pick up small areas of cancer. These areas can only be visualised under a microscope once the specimen is removed. Perhaps in the future we will have a way to accurately detect extent of disease to the mm.
