Good Mechanic + Bad Parts = VERY Bad Situation | Toyota Evap System Problems

- A Combination of a good mechanic and bad parts basically reverts you back to the same as having a bad mechanic.
In the shop we have a 2007 Toyota 4Runner which was diagnosed correctly but a counterfeit part caused the diagnosis to derail and go back to square one which is why it's in our shop.
In this video we run some tests on the Evap system, a system that most folks and mechanics still don't understand or can diagnose properly.
I'll do my best in this video to explain Toyota's intrusive EVAP system, How it works and how to diagnose some of it's common problems.

A helpful hint on tighten gas cap message or small e vap leak is to put some vasoline on the filler neck and some on the O ring of the gas cap it may help.
This actually does work with very small leaks from old original gas caps and if you have a slightly rusty filler neck where the cap O ring sits
don't use petroleum based products (vaseline) on any rubber parts (o-rings, etc) as it breaks down the rubber. can use silicone grease instead.
Dielectric grease or silicone paste would be better imo
@@efil4kizum yes. It’s silicone based and won’t hurt the rubber
Or ....You could just buy the new OEM cap for 35 bucks and be done with it.
You are not just a mechanic, you are an instructor. Thank you.
Oh man, I would really love to have this guy as my local mechanic. Nothing but respect ! Greetings from a Toyota Hilux owner !
you'd like waiting 2 months to . . . nothin :) nevermind.
Agreed! Hey AMD, wouldn't you like to move out to California, specifically the famous Silicon Valley? :-) Just kidding, thankfully I have two mechanics I trust completely that are only 15 minutes from my house.
Hell NO. I have a Honda😂
@@dddpvt Ford V/s Chevy is SO 1967. ...
@@_Ramen-Vac_ *Good deal! No 'puter to screw up.
The Car Care Nut does very thorough work and we’re grateful for it in the repairing of our daughter’s 4Runner. Thanks again
AMD, you're a treasure to us Toyota owners. I've learned a lot watching your videos over the last couple of years. Unfortunately my health has deteriorated and I can no longer work on my Toyota. I'm at the mercy of my Toyota dealer for service that I trust has been done correctly. I'm only about 5 hours away from you and I seriously have considered getting an appointment and bringing my Vehicle to you to check out. Keep up the great information, we sure do appreciate it!
I drove 17 hours to his shop one way, worth it to get things done right
I hope you get well Keith
Do it.
Make a daytrip out of it and spend the night in a hotel when he's not slammed and hotel rates are low.
Take yourself a nice relaxing drive and a nice vacation, while AMD takes care of your car Keith. It will be worth every penny and every bit of time, both you and your car deserve it.
If can do light mechanic work on my 02 Tundra like brakes, struts, shocks, Radiator, spark plugs, do I have enough experience to do the timing belt and waterpump replacement? Or do you recommend a dealer? Local shop? Thanks. Love your channel and have watched for 2-3 years! 😂
As a Toyota guy (just bought my 3rd to add to my other 2), I really appreciate seeing there are still Toyota techs out there. Being a tech myself, it's good to have a quality resource available. Great production too. Excellent camera work and a VERY clean shop, also shows the care you have for your work. Keep it up man.
Need help in finding on line Toyota/Lexus parts, reputable, I’m in the Houston area and these dealership part clerks are horrible, I keep my composure, but it’s a shame in there customer service, professional courtesy etc, but I’m sure that’s how the dealership wants it, to get you in and swallow your money. I’m so sorry for the naive customer who is getting ripped off. Hopefully next planet and life all of us good people are there.
Your sarcasm in checking the counterfeit, MORE EXPENSIVE gas cap is priceless. I learn so much watching your videos, even for models other than my Toyota. Thanks for all you do!
Thanks, as always, for both your teaching and advice. I'm learning finally not to be so cheap when it comes to replacing a part with OEM parts for keeping our Toyotas a long time.
That's a sweet 4Runner! It really belongs in TCCN shop. Nothing less will do.😅
Love that charcoal color
Is it yours? 😂
Wish there was a mechanic/shop like you around here. I don't drive Toyotas but none of the shops around here have the passion and integrity you have.
Fortunately I found that I live only 7 miles from his shop in Homer Glen, IL
100% truth! I'm old enough and made enough mistakes buying cheap parts, that I only put OEM parts on my Toyota and Honda vehicles. A great example was I bought CV-joints for my Honda Odyssey at 121,000 miles because they were cracking and popping every time I turned due to being warn out. Instead of going with the OEM I went with a set from Autozone. They didn't even make it 30,000 miles and it was right back to a knuckle popping horror show. I bit the bullet and went to Honda and did OEM like I should have, and now I'm at 211,100'ish miles on that 2008 Honda Odyssey and never had a problem again.
I got an '05 4runner for real cheap because some shop quoted this guy $1,300 to drop the fuel tank and fix a little tube with rodent damage. I just got some fuel rated hose for $1.50 at autozone, crawled under the truck and replaced the old plastic hose that was very much accessible without dropping anything.
That's a lot of money for two or three hours' worth of work.
@@troy3456789 Yeah it's very strange that I could see the hose, reach the hose, and somebody said "we gotta drop the tank". The previous owner was a pretty old guy who didn't really know much about cars so that could be a factor.
@@LaughingCarrot The age of the previous owner really is immaterial and irrelevant in this case. There's oldsters that are car experts and oldsters that know nothing about cars and do not care about vehicle care; same with any age. We don't get to choose what we care about and think about; all we can do is witness it.
I had the same exact problem with my tacoma. Amazon sucks, I had to go to the dealer...
What year Tacoma? I have a 2017, and I am thinking about just replacing the gas cap as preventative maintenance.
I had this experience last year with my mom's '08 Corolla. Replaced gas cap with one from Amazon. It looked identical (including strap). The EVAP code returned :-( The Amazon cap was
*Wisdom on display here. 99% of the time all the cap needs is a new Viton O-ring. Plastic metric calipers can tell you all you need to know. Cheers!*
I have run into the same issues with aftermarket parts. Especially using them on Asian vehicles. American cars seem to be more forgiving. Probably because they already have cheap parts on them LOL. Thanks for another great video.
This comment is stupid
We had a 2000 Chevy Venture van bought new. You know you are in for trouble when you had to replace passenger side tie rod ends and sway bar links every couple of years. Turns out the tie rods were dry sockets by design and the sway bar links were weak. They could not handle the rough pavement on the edge of country roads.
Bottom line, we spent more on that van than it was worth a couple times over in the 11 years we owned it. If I had it to do over again I’m not sure what we would have purchased but it would not have been a GM. Our last GM was a 2007 Pontiac G6. We sold it to our daughter after 5 years and 100,000 miles. She spent a year in Minnesota with it. When she returned to VA it needed thousands in repairs due to gravel and road salt damage. At that point we sold it for very little and bought our 2013 Highlander. Still have it w/ 145,000 miles. 👍
I always love your concise way of explaining things, I am always learning. Thanks as always!!
Parts is the secrets for less cost and safety also !
AMD, thank you for all the videos! Huge blessing, I have 4 RAV4’s, 1 Sequoia, you’ve made keeping them healthy much easier and economical, not to mention the time savings.
Bought Xtool D8, and quick jack system because of your excellent videos.
Late to this channel, fellow bass player and Toyota nut. AMD, your ethics, integrity and respect for you labor is very inspiring and oh so needed in this day and age. Thank you for sharing that!
After see some Mecanic in my area to fix my Tacoma , I have the pleasure to book appointment with TCCN , he is very professional, he is the best , thanks for fix my Tacoma , now my Tacoma run like new , thanks
I have learned so much from your channel, thank you. I have a 2021 Toyota forerunner that I absolutely love. I’ve followed your guidelines for changing engine oil from the very beginning and undercoat it on the first day I owned it from things that I learned here on your channel. so I say thank you, and God bless.
Great video Amd. I actually have been dealing with this same issue on my 04 Camry 3.3. Got an “oem” gas cap online and the P0442 and P0456 codes came back. I was chasing my tail looking into the purge valve, hoses, etc. I revísited the gas cap and ultimately realized that it was counterfeit. A whole lot of time wasted for a fake part. I went to the parts store to get an aftermarket gas cap and so far so good 🤞🏼 moral of the story is that just because it says OEM does not mean that it is a legitimate part. In my opinion, it’s best to get certain parts from the dealership.
If only there was a Toyota mechanic like AMD out here in Sydney, Aus. Kudos to you, proud Hilux V6 owner.
I love when you post 4runner content, specially with 4th gens! They are such reliable vehicles when treated with lots of love. You forgot to mention when living in rusty areas to check your fuel tank straps! I just checked mine today, although the undercover for the fuel tank isnt that rusty the fuel tank straps tend to rot off
If only every mechanic was like this guy, as my c300 manual is getting older i find that the dealer mechanic are increasing not caring about the car even though i plan to keep the vehicle mint. I kind of have to do most things my self to make sure its done right.
I’m SO happy my car will be there next month. It will be a little bit of a road trip from Detroit, but I couldn’t think of a better place to get my Rav worked on. I’m looking forward to see the shop in person and get my car fixed with the best Toyota mechanic in the world. 🙏🏻 Love the channel! Keep it up.
Great video very informative. My 2010 rav4 v6 is throwing 14 emissions codes about every 300 miles. Been waiting for the snow to melt to get under and check it out. I'll try your tests thanks!
I'd LOVE to see a video on Techstream, I've used it a bit and saw videos, but I'd rather have a comprehensive video from my new best channel when it comes to my car 😊
Keep up your good work, and we'll keep enjoying your videos !
Hi AMD, a great informative video you have excelled again in your clear explanations of the issues of buying after market parts. Just on the side, my new Xtool D8 arrived today after watching your recommendation on the Xtool. ‘ I hope ‘life is good’ as you say. 👍👍👍🇦🇺
You are amazing my friend, your knowledge is unparalleled.
Video was great and came at an appropriate time. Thanks!
What is the most difficult Toyota mechanical issue you ever solved? Feel like you know Toyotas inside in and out so it must take a lot to surprise.
I’d have to say a certain 2014 Camry that had an intermittent gps issue not moving when the car moves. It took a couple of weeks of going wire by wire while driving around and waiting for the problem to show up
I'd literally pay any amount of money hourly to have somebody like this guy maintain my car. The peace of mind, knowing that your investment is in good hands is worth it
This is very insightful. I am actually having similar EVAP leak in my Ram 1500.
AMD: I used your suggestion to diagnose a bad wheel bearing on a Highlander. Hold onto the strut spring, rotate the tire and feel for vibration in the spring. Worked like a charm. Thanks Much.
I always listen to you. I put factory pcv in my wife’s 1016 Camry and drive belt .
+1 on the aftermarket axles. I put one on my 2017 ES300h after about 220k miles. Made noise from day 1. Bit the bullet and paid the ~$400 for the Lexus OEM. Solved the problem. Super quiet now.
For preserving the frame/underside, I cannot recommend Fluid Film enough. I treat over 150 cars every fall in NE Ohio, and it WORKS
Glad to have TCCN installing a transmission cooler on my Tundra TRD Pro today!
Love this channel. Keep up the great work. T4R ftw!
Great video. Original parts! Thank you.
Thanks to people like Mr CCN and a few others that I follow on YT I can't tell how much money I have saved watching your videos , I learned how to change my serpentine belt, spark plugs, brakes , and I even fixed code PO456 ( small EVAP leak) after testing and looking for a air leak I looked at my gas cap seal and it was full of cracks... $25 after I bought a new gas cap and del code ... 4 months later CEL didn't came back on Ty Mr CCN 👌
Excellent as always !
Thanks😊
As an import automotive technician, Toyota /Lexus gasoline caps comes with their respective tethers. Aftermarket’s gas caps do not work, go through emissions testing like we do in our area, it most likely will fail. Go OEM always regardless of the make of your vehicle.
Ahmed, another great video, cautioning against using aftermarket and counterfeit Toyota parts. You should link your counterfeit Toyota parts video to the description box.
Love my 06 4Runner. 330,000 miles and still goes strong.
He is excellent mechanic. I bought a new defective gas for evap leak. I was racking my mind to figure out what was wrong. I bought gas cap from Toyota and e cap code was corrected. Thank you! Thank you!
Always putting out Great Videos.
Dude!!! I have an ;08. I have often thought the gas cap was faulty on mine, I get the CE light...sometimes it goes off, but sometimes it doesn't. And I have thought man, it feels like it comes off too easy. So thank you for confirming it shouldn't be that way. I just went to a dealership website and order an OEM from them. Hopefully that corrects my problem
Gas cap came. By the time I started the truck on the 3rd time, the CEL light cleared. This OEM cap definitely feels different when un-screwing it. Thanks again for the vid. :)
Very informative! God bless you!
I purchased some fake OEM iridium spark plugs from EBay before.... Never again! Got a P0456 on my RAV4, got genuine Toyota Gas Cap and purge valve canister, ran a few cycles and got rid of my code. Great video as always!
Great info as always!
Learned the hard way about counterfeit parts when I used a “Honda” branded timing belt kit I got off eBay for the family Odyssey for a routine timing belt change. 15,000 miles or so later it broke, bending several valves and requiring me to take the head off for a valve job. You better believe the next timing belt, water pump, pulleys, etc. all came direct from my local Honda dealership.
Yup, I had the same Amazon gas cap fiasco and got a dealership gas cap and it fixed it on our 4runner. I currently have the light on my Tundra and replaced with a Toyota one online but same code persists so need to do other diagnosis.
Did a lift on my '08 Had to replace the axles up front....so went with CVJ Axles. Good for lifted 4Runners.
This happened to me with an aftermarket ABS wheel speed sensor on a VW. Had to buy it twice and learned my lesson.
Great video! I learned something today!
You are an excellent teacher!
Thank you for the video bro👍
thank you for sharing with us
i really appreciate it for your hard work
god blessed you
My friend I buy a new Toyota Camry le I change my accord after everything you teach us and I live far away in homestead Florida but anything I need to fix in the future you are my mechanic I don’t trust any other including dealers, thanks for everything
May the LORD bless & keep you also Man! What an incredible gift you have been given!
Might be worth moving to Chicago to get your Toyota fixed my AMD!
'99 corolla with 430k and '06 is250 with 224k. I learned my lesson. Now I go to my local Toyota and Lexus dealerships and pick up the parts myself. The parts bags have my name and all the order details. A great feeling that's worth the extra dollars.
I am chasing an incomplete evap I/M readiness check that has no codes. Brand new gas cap didn't help. Passed emissions so I am not pressed.
Thanks for the video. The evap system is complex and this helped.
Best wishes.
Best Toyota Lexus channel on UA-cam 😉
Excellent all around! I’ve got an 08 4Runner with 230k miles, both axles need to be replaced. I’m debating the small fortune for originals, the only time I’ve ever debated using an original Toyota part.
Thanks for you’re videos it is really helpful . I am from Oman ( a country near Dubai ) here we get a lot of American written of cars with very less miles . I personally own two cars from America which have been through major accidents . Camry 2007 le and Lexus es 350 2015 both of them run very good . My Camry has done 480k kms ( around 280k miles) no major issue and only burns oil and rides like a car should . My Lexus es has done 300k kms ( around 182k miles ) no issues yet just replaced sparks plugs and compressor once that’s it . I am really impressed how cheap you can get this cars and they last really really long time . Planning to buy a Rav4 In the comings years :)
Exceptional video again.
Hi 👋. And thank you for what you do.
Thanks again for sharing.
I might have you look at my 4runner soon.
Great video!
That knock off part at 5:00 kills me😂
Ahahahaha..."but just for science sake"....around here it's "shits and giggles". I was sure that was going to come out of your mouth, love ya AMD, another great video, you're the best!
Have I got a story for you. I've been filling up my mother's 2016 Highlander and noticed how tight her cap sealed compared to my 08 4runner. So, back in April I found your video.I thought when I get a code, I'll go oem. Yesterday, my dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Had Advance scam for codes and they came up with p0455. I now had a reason to buy a new cap and went straight to the dealer and purchased one. I installed it and reset the computer. Now, 5 starts later, I still don't have a code.Probably saved $200 or more to get it diagnosed and fixed. Nothing beats oem.
Thank you Sir.
The look on AMD's face when he was describing that bogus gas cap reminded me of the look my dad gave me when I goofed up as a kid! 😂😂
This happened to me just last week. Bought a gas cap on Amazon, with good reviews, for my 2010 FJ cruiser. Put it on my Toyota. First time I walked by after driving, I could hear a sound from it. I did not think much of it. Seen this video. Went back to have a closer look. Sure enough not only was their a hissing sound, but it sounded like a pump running when the car was off. When I got really close, you could smell the gas leaking. Big thanks to our Toyota guru here.
Awesome video format, Ry! I’m excited to see some video on the black X (Blackie?). What kid of fuel mileage do you get when towing with the Ram vs regular driving?
Thanks!
I can't wait for TechStream video!
regarding the axle, i remember another video you made that said if possible, keep the original axle and repair it, due to the issues with cheap replacements.
Yes, I believe that is just what he said to repair them with a rebuild kit.
I just had this conversation with a technician at my dealer's service department several weeks back and he also confirmed the rebuild with the kit.
Good video, I was looking for an explanation of the process toyotas go through to check the evap system, but around 16:36 you bring on the leak standards on the screen, but 20 thousandths is .020", not .20", etc.
i really wish your shop was closer, id be honored to have my lexus serviced by you
So enjoy your video's .
Good advice AMD 😎😎👍👍
That's a sweet 4th gen 4Runner.
I just discovered your channel and subscribed. Awesome video work and information! I recently bought a 2007 Rav4 with the v6 2GR-FE engine and found your videos on it very helpful. I did notice the official Toyota owners manual for this engine says to use 5w-30 but for my 2011 Highlander with the same engine, the owners manual states to use 0w-20. Why are there two different motor oil viscosity? I'm in the Northeast, so I figured I could use the same viscosity for both cars and use 0w-20.
You Sir , are Toyota God ! In my family.we all own one and refer each other to what you taught us.😂😂Thank You!
Great video
Well done nice explaining greetings from Iraq.
Great video AMD!, counterfeit parts aren’t worth it. I would only want OEM for EVAP problems.
Sadly on my 4 Runner I got a toyota oem gas cap $40 failed in 3 weeks, Got a cheap one it seems to work fine several months in... I really hate the way the cap connects on the 4Runner I prefer a screw on....
Love the videos, are you aware of a additive that Toyota uses in the differential? I usually just swap the fluid only.
First! I've had good luck replacing just the rubber gasket. A simple search will find it. So cheap you can replace it many times ias needed
It's not just the gasket. Sometimes it's the internal valve itself. The fuel cap has a vent that can fail as well.
@@LynxStarAuto yes they do, however I have not seen this yet at 350,000 miles
@@LynxStarAuto It may be possible the gasket wears, dries out and leaks before the valve goes bad. The valve itself may be robust.
I deal with this all the time, I always suggest oem parts and explain it will be 2-3x the parts cost but it likely will last the same length of time as whats on the odometer when it failed. People freak when they find out a oem cv is 4-800 bucks and he oem rebuild kits are several hundred per cv so they want aftermarket cv thats under 200. Therefore I have to explain that the am cv might last a week or might last 2 years, either way they will pay the labor cost over and over even if they want the one with lifetime warranty. I even try to explain that a used CV is better than aftermarket but all they can see is that shiney lifetime warranty.
You are missing out on good money and good results not offering simple frame and floorpan coatings. pressure wash out/off the loose rust/dirt/old paint then allow to dry and then apply ospho, wait 24 hrs then spray apply two coats of corroseal and your done. This method can last over a decade if the cleaning and application are done right and trust me its not rocket science. You simply keep track of materials and charge actual labor time to complete minus drying times. You will need a few things and a custom spray tube for boxed frames but that is easy enough to make yourself to work with commonly available tools.
Another great video but with one concern for me. When reviewing the front end and the rust present, applying an undercoating was mentioned. If this means the black gooey sometimes rubberized spray-on stuff I'm against it. It may trap in moisture and seal in the rust. You can do something like Krown but I'm a big fan of Fluid Film. Basically apply it once and touch up annually as needed. The Navy and Coast guard have been using the stuff for decades. It has a bunch of other uses as well.
Fluid film! Not really a fan of coatings you can’t easily remove or wipe off
@@TheCarCareNut I'm hoping that means you like it and other undercoatings are what you mean when you say they can't be easily removed. I use Fluid Film on battery terminals, hinges, latches and other moving metal parts. First learned about it from a guy that restores vintage Class 8 trucks. He swore by Kroil as well.
@@tomd5010 *Whilst loudly disparaging tar/asphalt-based coatings, Ahmed has spoken favourably of Fluid Film in past videos. Kroil! $45 now for 20oz can but works like nothing else. Cheers!*
I have become so addicted to these videos! I have a question, I upgraded the brakes on my 3rd gen Toyota Tacoma, to a front and rear Stoptech disc brake BBK. Does it make a performance difference to do a brake bleed with techstream? Or is it OK to do without it? I would love to hear your opinion I feel like you’re the most knowledgeable Toyota guy out there 🙌
If the brake bleeders were not open it shouldn’t make a performance difference to bleed them
@@TheCarCareNut thank you very much!
I had someone come in needing a new seatbelt(pre-tensioner). He bought one from the wrecker and asked us to fit it. A quick look at it revealed it had been "deployed" already.
Thank you!
Counterfeit Chinese parts strike again. Well done AMD. "I've never seen that part number on an '07 4runner" badass, sir!
Love your videos. But learned something huge today..it's a little thing but was concerning to me - my wife's gx460 makes a humming/buzzing noise when it is off for a while in the garage. At first, I though it may be the air suspension running tests or something - but now, based on this video (and since it is a toyota) - it would make sense that it is the Vapor Pressure Test running... Thanks man! One day can you do a video on the 3rd gen Tundra's and how they have the bed rust out from underside? I've had mine for years (east Coast salt/chemicals) with a spray-on bed liner and the rails and attachment points rusted out from underneath. from what I have read...it's common from design. (even though they sprayed my frame...they wouldn't touch the bed).
