WEAK BUT WILLING [1929] - WILL KING, JEAN HARLOW

Following my previous Christie Comedy upload, I present another from his tenure at Paramount Pictures. This film stars Will King, a popular dialect comedian from the burlesque days, alongside Dot Farley and silent screen comedian Billy Bevan. This great pre-code comedy features some fabulous prohibition-era humor, with the hiding away of alcohol when the authorities show up. Pre-code fans should also look for an early appearance by an unbilled Jean Harlow as the seductress, wearing the dress with a very revealing neckline, who sits just behind Will King, this was one of her last appearances in two-reelers before she took the film world by storm as one of the early 30's greatest sex symbols.

An amazing document, not only for Jean Harlow's brief but unforgettable appearance, but because back in those pre-PC days, the late 1920s, it shows that you could still make fun of Jewish immigrants and and their broken English without offending anyone. Fancy Brice and Eddie Cantor had done the same on Broadway with great success , but it wouldn't be too long before the "Jewish comic" disappeared from the screen. Our loss.
