Introducing you to my experience on my psych rotation! This vlog includes the first two weeks of the rotation. It was a heck of a ride--went to urgent care, sad family news, stress, happiness. Hope you enjoy this vlog! I really like how i edited it :)
Greetings Ms.Southard, Fine Subject - Psychiatry which deals with the Disconnection between MIND and BODY.. Just Chill.. Hold on.. Take Care. With regards, RanjithJoseph (R.J)
I worked in psych for many years as a nurse - love seeing this rotation! Making sure patients follow through is hard in psych. Psych is important to all areas of medicine as mental health affects physical health and vice versa. And learning how to deal with psych conditions will help tremendously in other areas of medicine! Inpatient psych is sooo much different than outpatient. Our mental health system needs so much support ❤️
I’m on my nursing school Psych rotation! I also don’t have an interest in it, and was a little nervous. However, what helped me was being told, no matter what speciality you decide, mental health/illness is always going to come up in ur career. Which motivated me to learn as much as I can!
I absolutely love seeing your medical school journey unfold. I can’t imagine how difficult it can be to diagnose without relying on physical exams. Such an interesting rotation. Thanks for sharing 💛
I was a taste tester for trix yogurt a few times when I was like 10 andddd they alwayssss asked for feedback about the colorsss! I am very honored you like and appreciated the colors that younger me got to play a role in choosing lol!
I'm a psychologist so, needless to say, familiar with what you're going through this week. Psych is a different beast for sure, when I talk with my physician friends and compare our experiences. I've met an OBGYN who specializes in prenatal mood disorders and its fascinating for me to see how she links the two fields. Best of luck to you! And I'm sorry about your dog. I hope Rosie feels better soon ❤️
As someone who transgender I wish there was more people like u in the medical community your honesty is so amazing and brave and is helping me on my journey and learn its ok to speak doctors or pa or nurses without feeling ashamed thank ub
Aw Rachel I'm so sorry about your puppy dog, my family dog just passed away last week so I completely understand how that feels. Similarly, he was 14 years old and we just thought he'd live forever. Dogs are angels on earth, I hope Rosie recovers and you get more time with her:)
My dog had a generalized seizure on Saturday, I rushed him to the vet ER and he is fine now but I definitely feel the hug your pet tight comment because that is what I have been doing every second since Saturday. Good luck with Rosie, I really hope she gets better 🐾💕
@@RachelSouthard they really are amazing! It is not Leo’s first medical emergency, he is mind blowingly strong and it sounds like Rosie is the same! I will be thinking of her and everyone who loves her!
I loved the SOB moment bc that is me on every time I run up flights of stairs. I work in a Pulm Critical Care office and SOB is very common as Im sure you know! I'm excited to see when/if you will go on that rotation and how you will like Critical Care. Stay Strong! and don’t you forget to be kind to yourself! you are doing amazing !!!
I was just wondering this morning if you’ll upload a video about you psych rotation and here we are! So excited to watch! P.S. I was smiling to my ears when I saw your IG story about the interview🥰
I had to put my doggie down a month ago, she was also a mutt and lived till she was 14. Totally understand that feeling when theyre not doing well. Hope she gets better! As always thanks for continuing to vlog, youre a source of inspiration for me as I get ready to apply to medical school this cycle
I clicked this video so fast because I'm also on my psych rotation and it has been going by sooooo slowly. Thankful for all of the time studying during the day like you but I don't feel mentally or physically stimulated and still feel so exhausted from listening to patients talk the entire time. Half of the week is inpatient, which is much more exciting and only half of the day, but I feel you. Sad Rafiki. Love you Rachel! :)
having a beloved pet become sick or pass away is SOOOO sad!!! i have such admiration for vets -- i hope that she lives many more years and i have always LOVED your screen on your phone with her sweet paws crossed!!! [i think those are her paws anyway :) and i also agree about the motivation to work out to then justify a hair wash LOL]
So you're telling me that I am getting 2 consecutive videos from Rachel !! Thanks a lot ☺️. Can't wait to get to know some medical terminologies from your rotations 😇
Aw, I hope Rosie feels better! I had to put my dog to sleep in August and it is truly a rough experience to watch your pet experience pain and discomfort. So glad she's doing okay!
Ooh I feel like we have the same schedule cos I literally just got out of my psych rotation. I can definitely relate to this. Inpatient psych was a very interesting and different part of medicine that I don't think people see enough of. But still really glad to have the experience I did.
Hope Rosie recovers soon! Just wanted to put it out there that you are THE most motivating person i have EVER come across it's like your optimism radiates through the screen and that has helped me so much in the past two years that I've been watching your videos!
I guess only medical field allows the doctors👨⚕ to explore all the variety it consists of. And that's what I love about it. & to Dr Rachel keep going champ. ❤ from a indian medical aspirant
I love watching your vids!! Btw your skin is beautiful!!! Love your lifestyle, your diet (I wish I can eat like that 😂) literally my fav med UA-camr even though I’m in nursing school.
I’m happy that even tho psych isn’t your jam you’re still exposed as a doctor. I needed mental health care as a new mom for both of my pregnancys and post partum
Hey! I am so sorry that you are feeling sick. A couple weeks ago my throat started hurting and I waited to go get help for so long. I eventually went to the er because I was in so much pain. Turned out I had mono and tonsillitis. You should try getting tested for that!
Ohhh you really had me at the end. Virtual comforting hugs to you 🐨. You're a really strong and inspiring person !! Thanks for all these vlogs. Thanks for introducing us to the "Rachel" ☺️. And as always stay happy n take care of your mental health💪🏻💫
You are a beautiful human inside out. :) and oh yes can totally relate to the psychiatry rotations, they were very passive for us too. Hope you are doing okay really loved each and every line written at the end of the Vlog.
Just remind yourself that especially working in Ob you will be using psych! Prenatal anxiety, postpartum depression/psychosis. Mental health is huge in Ob and those who are struggling to conceive and those that maybe didn’t want to be pregnant. Although it might not be a direct correlation you can use these moments and techniques when working with your Ob/gyn patients! I really struggled with prenatal anxiety and I didn’t feel like my doctors were super helpful in assisting me through that
Definitely! In this week's upcoming video, I talk about how I've been asking the doc about PPD and such. Don't you worry! I'm making the best of these non-OBGYN rotations by learning as much as I possibly can about stuff that particularly pertains to my future patients.
I hope that you are feeling better Rachel, I'm sorry about your dog. What I tell myself with grief is that, they are no longer suffering in pain but grief is definitely really difficult and complex to process ❣️ I had a question about UWorld, do you make notes at the same time or do you just do the questions repeatedly?
Always stock up in Celsius at Costco :) they said psych was easy but it was definitely hard to get used to the flow of things, can’t beat the hours though. Sorry to hear about your dog, 💔💔
Ah yes, psych *pats DSM on bookshelf * It's actually a very interesting field. Although I'm biased because my specialty was in forensic mental health. But the way it can incorporate every aspect of a person's life and you combine knowledge of neurology and even pharmacology *chef's kiss* Neuro psychopharmacology will forever be one of my favorite courses from grad school. That being said I would never want to work in a therapist role so while my specialty is psych related, my degrees aren't specifically psych degrees. And yeah, no-shows and in general treatment adherence is a constant struggle in that field.
What's the song at the end of each vlog , if anyone happens to know please ? Also i love watching your vlogs Rachel, such a loneliness alleviating, calming experience because i go through what you go through
Hi Rachel! California weather has been a roller coaster the past couple of weeks and when that happens I notice my allergies get worked up. My tonsils get swollen when allergy season starts so maybe it’s your allergies causing your swollen tonsils ;) just a thought :)
I just recently found out I'm bipolar I was in the psych ward so they could watch me carefully All the doctors and nurses were very nice and made me feel very comfortable I was in there that was the first time I've ever been in the psych ward usually manage me as an outpatient but I was having suicidal thoughts on it happened but I'm doing a lot better now
Is there anyone else in medical school who is afraid of getting some diseases that you study yourself, especially psyche and cancer? I'm in this situation so often and honestly it's a real struggle for me to study these subjects although it makes me scared🙊 would appreciate some other experiences 🙊☺️
Hey Rachel aspiring medical student here, I have kids and so I was wondering on your third year with rotations and everything do you get assigned rotations somewhere close to where you live, do you get to choose where you have rotations or is it just random? Also what is the time frame you do rotations or does it depend? Also you should do a q&a!!!
I am so sorry for your dog. I wish she will stay as healthy as possible. I am always kidding about the old old dogs, with white hair and arthritis that you always believe they gonna die soon but they stay alive for years lol like old weird grandpas and grandmas. I lost 1 years ago my weird grandpa dog and its very difficult.

Just remember that while it was boring to you, it was possibly a stressful, scary, or traumatic moment in some patients' lives.
