- KTM, Yamaha and BMW have all announced they're going to be making bikes with automated gearboxes soon - but who really wants them?
I'm not really much of a football fan, so I took advantage of empty roads the other night to catch you up on the channel - what bikes I've booked in, what I'm planning for my MT-10, some tour plans and a bit of a debate about automatic bikes. Vloggy vloggington.

I've been riding for nearly 60 years, first bike a 150 Bantam. Since then, I have never been without a bike, the last two being an MT10, and an MT09SP. I am 75, and still totally committed to mototcycling. Unfortunately, I have been diagnosed with Mesothelioma, as a result of asbestos contact in my earlier career, a treatment side effect causing severe nerve damage to both feet. They are both completely numb, and I simply cannot change gear. So the Honda DCT is an absolute godsend - it allows me to keep on riding. My NC750X dct may be slower and more of a budget bike than the MT09SP, but its not that bad. So yes, I need an auto bike.

My younger fit self would have agreed with you.. But regretfully both myself and myself now suffer various ailments and disabilities.. So bike choice has to be considered carefully.. My wife has a Rebel 1100 DCT, which has made her biking experience enjoyable. Indeed I am considering a similar change.. Thankfully there are more choices available today.. So we can continue doing what we love for a few years longer..
I'm getting arthritis in my hands so a DCT gearbox is an absolute boon. You don't complain about cars with DCT gearboxes in fact it's seen as a performance option, why should bikes be any different.
It's all part of teeing up punters ready for the transition to electric bikes, and you of all people should know that Tim.

Honda proved that the market wants automatic bikes.
My wife who is 52 years old had to sell her bike because of an issue with her left wrist so she can no longer use a clutch. She will only be able to buy an automatic or clutch less bike. With an aging population and arthritis becoming an issue I am surprised we don’t see more automatic bikes.
The venn diagram of War Bores and Bike Bores has a big overlap. Those of us in the middle of it will continue to enjoy the great content!

Great vids, as for auto boxes in bikes, we'll have you ever heard someone say the MT07 doesn't need a quick shifter even if every other bike in class does. Yes I am old school

Basic lazy people like me, commuters, makes for better pillion experience and it's just a nice option to have
People don't have to buy it if they don't want it basically
Why not? Its the best thing in a motorcycling world after a long time. More people will start riding, because its more comfortable and easier to ride and commute. For touring its also a great option to have both automatic and manual option. You can still buy many manual bikes, nothing will be/is taken away from us.

Auto cars used to be a rarity - remember 3 speed auto boxes that would take 3 minutes to change to a fresh gear?
Now they're at least as common as manuals if not more so once you get above the super mini class etc

And it’s new riders that desperately need to be attracted or motorcycling will become an increasingly niche activity enjoyed only by us old gits until they ban it completely!

Really? A broken wrist is one of the most common accidents out there. How about three operations and multiple plates, etc to correct the left wrist? Really?
I'm 54 and I am currently recovering from knee replacement surgery. I am losing communication with my lower leg so for me, because it's my left leg, shifting will be more of a problem as my arthritis progresses. So yes I will need an auto transmission at some point so it's great to have a choice.

I'm a huge fan of auto bikes. I have a DCT Honda & a 1250 GS. The X-ADV 750 is my goto bike, it's brilliant fun and a lot of that is due to the DCT box. Remember the only reason we have gearboxes is due to the limitations of the internal combustion engine. For me it's just faff I don't need in my life. The fact most manufacturers have auto's or have announced they're are coming says it all 😎
So yesterday I found myself snarled up on a single carriageway road, heavy traffic exiting Goodwood festival of speed (forgotten it was on). Hot, slow, stop start narrow back lanes and streets on a Triumph Tiger 1200 GT Pro………it did cross my mind that the option of an auto would’ve been useful. I’m past 60 and that Triumph is a bit of a lump in slow speed situations (clutch is heavy), hand ache, leg ache, and ball ache because the seat rolls you forward and in so doing squashes your bollox. However, I would still like the use of a clutch, so Honda’s new e clutch would’ve been perfect.
Intersting question on automatic bikes. I'm only just on my first automatic car, and it's a game changer. From my point of view, as someone who hadn't ridden a bike untilI I was 50, using a clutch can take some getting used to, and as with cars it would be ideal when in traffic. I think the most intersting development is hondas eclutch, which offers the best of everthing, no risk of ever stalling when setting off, and the gears change when you want. I think the heavier the bike the better this technology is, as you have the confifence of two feet on the ground util you're moving. If it attracts more peple to bikes, it cant be a bad thing.
@@matthewcocker4940 thing is it shouldn’t be one or the other. Manufacturers could easily make everyone happy, they just don’t seem to want to.
I have had my licences for bikes/cars and trucks for 45 years and never owned or wanted an automatic anything. I drive/ride my vehicles, not just steer them. Human and machine in harmony and making sh*t work the way in which is was intended by its maker is a skill. I think that unless for a medical reason etc that necessitates an auto anything buying an auto for a motorcycle over a manual is a consequence of the 21st desire to have all things done as quickly and painlessly as possible. For me, and I think you as well, the act of riding a motorcycle is food for the soul and the very thought of using an auto gearbox somehow cheapens the whole thing.
I’ve been riding for over 50 years and well over 500 000 kilometers on many types and brands of motorcycles. Hated DCT on my Africa Twin at first; respect and love it now. But, here’s the thing: My manual shifting muscle memory is so “automatic” it was very difficult for me to learn how to use DCT. Suffice to say that the time and learning I put into adjusting to the difference was well worth the effort. Still enjoy shifting the old fashion way (on most bikes) but the new trend towards “automatic” is more than alright in my books.
With you 100% Tim on the automatic bikes point, I have DCT on my Goldwing and on a big old lumbering touring bike like that an automatic gearbox makes complete sense for relaxing riding but on any other bike I really don’t get the point - like keyless ignition the answer to a problem nobody was asking! I've got a DCT NT1100 and really like it 99% of the time. The only time I don't like it is trying to do a clockwise u-turn because I have short legs and I can't drag the rear brake to calm it all down. I love twisting the throttle and having the the gearbox bang through the gears. Sometimes it carries too high a gear into a corner but I can use the down-gear button to sort this out. I do wonder why so many manufacturers are making automatic gearboxes and clutches though. My next bike doesn't have to be DCT or automatic either, I'll see what I fancy next time.

Bought a DCT Africa twin when they first came out because I had a broken thumb which took 6 months to heal so couldnt pull in a manual clutch. Loved the transmission for the 2 years I had it. Would buy auto again.

yup i would consider an auto box ..but id have to test one out first..will prob try the new GSA when one becomes available
I love the content you put out,Tim. I really do. However, I'm a little surprised at your views regarding auto-bikes. 'No hardship in using a clutch lever...'....Some riders have great difficulty in using a clutch. Those that have numb feet will never know the joys of using a quick-shifter... because their impediment won't permit it.
Like everything else, bikes are evolving, and some form of auto transmission will be part of this evolution.
Whether one is a lazy individual and can't be arsed to change gears or those that need genuine assistance, such bikes are here to stay for sure.
Trikes are used by a lot of disabled bikers and they're generally accepted. Why not an auto-bike?
Let's consider others less fortunate and not deny them the joys of motorcycling, albeit in a limited way.
I might’ve come across too negative! I fully understand they’ll be a boon for the less abled, but I just wasn’t sure there’s a big enough market to justify the R&D costs! If it means more people can ride bikes for longer (and, erm, bikes that aren’t Hondas!) then it’s all good!
@timrodierides Perfectly valid point, Tim. Costs involving R+D would indeed play a major role in such technology, and I fully concur.
This topic appears to have generated healthy debate, and that's always a good thing.

@@timrodieridesmaybe you might want to make another video and put that point across and pose the question to manufacturers why they don’t just make everyone happy by retaining a clutch and adding paddles as well (BMW), oh yeah cost.
If I had to guess, I'd say it's to do with the ever reducing emissions regs. Can't say it's something I'd want though. I'd be happy with a quickshifter

I agree. Auto boxes are an aid to meeting emission regs in cars and bikes are on the same path albeit a few years behind. Last year I bought my first bike with an quickshifter and I love it. When giving it some I can’t keep up changing gear manually so the quickshifter means I can keep it on the boil. Re auto box, maybe not yet, but it’s just a matter of time before I come around to the idea. When that time comes I’ll probably wonder why I waited so long 😂. Love the videos Tim.
That's a reasonable point you and some others make in this column. However, there are those who have difficulty in changing gears owing to some form of disability, as mentioned in other comments here, and such auto-bikes would make their motorcycling far more accessible and enjoyable.
So, with respect, how about thinking of others instead of focusing on yourself?

However, many will be able-bodied and, therefore, able to take full advantage of a bike's technology. Some of the wording just appears to be a little biased toward themselves and, so, do not seem to consider those not so fortunate, that's all.

Interesting. Knackered my left hand in accident and can’t operate a clutch lever safely, so auto all the way for me! Have a dct Africa twin, great bike and still has the heart of a proper bike 👍
Same here, a dozy 80 year old pulled across a dual carriageway and shattered my left wrist. That was in 1971. As a result of this arthritis has finally caught up with me. I am in my seventies now but still tour and ride all year round. Yes I was pissed off that I had to sell my GS, my CB1000r and my XSR 900 but life goes on and to be honest if carrying on doing European tours, a couple of weeks at the TT and touring in the UK (off to Scotland on the 27th) means I am on a NC750x dct so be it. It did over 15,000 miles with me last year. Rather that than sitting at home fading away.
With auto bikes I think it depends on what bike your after and for the purpose. It suits some bikes like a goldwing and for serious tourers but not for all. I'm the same though mate with cars, we drive characterless appliances now. Bikes like you say are still raw. I've got a 20 mt10 and love it
I do, and I buy a new one every few years or so. The last five years brought new KTM 1290 SDGT, 390 ADV and '24 HD Street Glide to the driveway. The new Honda e-clutch looks really good,and I'm tempted to try it out.

I love auto boxes in cars (who can be arsed rowing their own gears, especially in traffic?) however not my thing on a bike, I like the input and control of a manual box, plus auto transmission is heavy which is undesirable on a bike. However I wouldn’t mind trying Honda’s E-clutch, that looks cool as it’s optional but could be handy for urban riding.

I wish I wasn’t interested in football, be very quiet for a ride this evening. I decided to go and polish my own MT10 during the penalty shoot out v Switzerland, it didn’t need it, I just couldn’t face the stress of penalties! Toying with going for ride later! #wimp!

I agree, of all the body styles and car types Ford could produce.... even the fugly Cougar was closer to what the new Capri should have been.... but I think it should have been something looking more like the MG Cyber GTS, which looks mint.
I think the demographic of motorcyclists has skewed older and older with younger people not getting into it. I know the kids in my life want nothing to do with manual transmissions on cars. I think they might be targeting younger new riders with the automatics to get some growth back in motorcycling?
Love the vlogs as always. On the Harley debate, I’d say go and test one of the big baggers from their touring platform, full-on Harley and embrace it, you’ll probably find you love it once you’ve got used to its quirks. The new sportsters may be a bit too close to what you’re used to and you’ll pick up on the shortcomings more. As for automatic bikes, there’s clearly a market and none of the manufacturers want to get left behind. Sadly the R&D costs will get passed on to all of us whether we want them or not. Very much looking forward to Vosges trips, it’s on my list to visit soon.
On the auto question - it’s surely a logical extension of the quickshifter (that we all love). I’m surprised that with a QS we don’t yet have the equivalent of paddle systems or buttons on the handlebars to do away with the foot lever?
You'll be amazed how quick the resurfacing will take when sombody else's insurance company is picking up the overtime bill.
I think urban commuters might be a market for automated manual bikes. Perhaps you have the auto for the commuter, and a normal manual for the fun/cool weekend bike?
Sit in a traffic jam for a hour and then you see where the auto clutch comes in . Absolutely nothing lost and everything to gain with the Honda E Clutch .
Surely the idea of a motorbike is to not sit in traffic for at all?
You need to get an exhaust for your bike. I also have an MT 10 SP and couldn't believe how quiet that thing was. Graves exhaust solved that issue for me 😊
With the onset of arthritis in my hands, in particular at the base of my thumbs I am thankful for anything that reduces stress on them and and my wrist. Oddly the suspension help as its BMW's paralever setup so I don't get the dive under braking as i did with my Tiger 1220 or the RS I had a short while which had conventional forks/suspension. So going to an automatice gearbox would reduce the stress on my left hand. The ACC worked well in dual carriageways and also meant less braking input from the right. Oh the joys of beiong the older biker !!
I love driving an automatic lorry at work - but, it doesn’t make me want an automatic car, or especially an automatic motorcycle! So far, I’m ok, with fully-functioning wrists, knees, ankles, etc. Therefore, I definitely don’t want anything automatic about a bike, until I have to!

Hey Tim, i also love how things bike are changing, the innovation, different styles different gadgets for want of a better word. I also love all the adaption ie auto bikes, if it allows more people to get in to biking then bring it on! Loving the content, also a bit of a war nerd myself so these videos are great. Just on the edge of saying yes to a MT10sp too - I’m actually one that likes the looks. What’s the motorway stuff like on the MT? Is it uncomfortably windy?
It's fine for me - obviously you're sitting in a 70mph wind but it's not buffeting over a screen or anything. I like it!

A bike that has little, to no reviews of any consequence, the Gen 3, KTM Duke390. I know not your usual bike to review, as small CC's are very overlooked in the Macho, ego trip world of bigger is better. I've had a good share of bikes over the years and I find the pocket rocket Gen 2 KTM 390 awesome fun. Do a review of the Gen please?
Auto box not for me, takes a lot of fun out of it and like you said, a QS and blipper, is hardly difficult!!!

Hey Tim, I like your unique style of bike reviews. I’ll even watch bikes I’m not interested in. I love the WW1 / 2 history too. As for auto gear changing flippery! Great for those who need it. I’ll pass and ride it myself. 😊
My dad is 61 and has very bad mobility in both legs and artritis in his hands. He can only ride scooters (he owns a forza 350) so i think there is definitely a market for automatic bikes. Its a hobby for ageing people like it or not.. young people simply cant afford 10-20k motorcycles. And the older generation has an increased demand for comfort and automatisation based on their needs.
Really interested to hear about the MT-09 SP and whether the fancy suspension is worth it for a ‘regular’ rider on the road.

Automatics are handy for disabled riders so it's nice to have the option.
But my problem is that the more tech they throw on bikes the more unreliable and expensive they become- also I'm a firm believer that reducing the skill required to ride a bike will lead to more accidents when the tech inevitably fails to do what it's meant to.
I really enjoyed your war bike series. My plan at some point is to start in Normandy and end up in Berchtesgarden, via the vosges, Ardennes etc. Keep it up Tim. I also went out for the first time since getting back from The Deutche last week and OH MY GOD the UK roads are shite. And NO I do not want an automatic or electric bike!

I owned a black JPS 3.0L Capri back in 84. An amazing tail happy low sleek, exciting car. That pile of sh1te SUV doesn’t deserve the name Capri.
As for auto gearboxes on bikes, a few years ago I would have said definitely not. As arthritis progresses on this 60 year old MT10 owner, I'm thinking auto may eventually come in handy. Let the buyer decide. 👍
If it gets more people to consider 2 wheels, I'm OK with it. I doubt I'll own one but it's nice to have options.
Two views of the motorcycle “automatic”; I’m an old fart, carpal tunnel and arthritis have led me to search out bikes with cruise control, quick shifters, and heated grips, just so I can ride longer in comfort 😉. And when you consider, unless you were purchasing a performance automobile here in the US you’d be hard pressed to find one with a standard transmission since the early 2000’s, leaving us with a generation that has no idea how to ride a “manual transmission” motorcycle, and therefore might not even consider getting into the sport 🤔.
Automatic is great - as long as it‘s not only automatic in the future. Personally though I even skip a qs.
I’m not a car enthusiast, I’ve had both manual and automatics and I prefer the latter. I’m still fully able bodied and I have no interest in an automatic motorcycle, neither have I any interest in quickshifters and autoblippers. Getting the downshift right on my shaft drive motorcycle is a feeling that I enjoy. But looking at the comments, I seem to be in a minority.
With all of the automated safety systems in place in so many areas today, yuou would think that there would be a system that tells drivers when they are leaking diesel....seems like an obvious thing.

Who wants an automatically shifting manual bike? Presumably anyone/everyone who options a quick shifter? From what I’ve read the only differences are that you have the option to go fully automatic when you feel it would be beneficial & you don’t need to use a clutch when coming to a stop or slow manoeuvring. As best I can tell, this new tech can only be a good thing & is them logical next step from quick shifters…
Nope I got a quick shifter and still like changing gear when I want, a quick shifter and an automatic are completely different animals.

I’ve tried DCT on bikes. Very clever but not for me. I love manual plus maybe quick shift. Keeps me connected with the ride. DCT disconnects me no matter how hard I try to like it. Each to their own though.
DCT and electronics (Don’t need DCT to do auto) are just fancy quickshifters. DCT Hondas have a manual mode and finger paddles. Honda originally made the DCT bikes available with a gear lever sold as an accessory but hardly anyone chose to fit them Had they fitted them as standard we probably wouldn’t even be having this discussion today. However they chose to save the manufacturing cost of fitting them to all bikes instead. Put the e-clutch and a gear lever on the DCT and everyone would be happy but manufacturers always seem to want to alienate someone to save a couple of quid (ie BMW who are not fitting finger paddles to their system).
Would love your views on the CF Moto range, esp the 799 CLX variants, if you can review them, Tim
Non-enthusiasts that want a motorcycle but never learned to drive manual may want an automatic. I've spoken to many people that won't try a motorcycle because shifting is intimidating. In the USA, a lot of younger people have never even seen a car with a manual transmission. If I was commuting on a motorcycle, it would be the top option on my list as traffic here is terrible.

On the subject of MT10 mods, have you looked at dropping the yoke through the forks a line of two to put a tiny bit more weight on the front for better handling? I know it was a very popular mod on the old ones and when I took the SP out this week I was surprised to find it felt a bit reluctant in really tight corners.
Did it to my 2023 'base' MT-10 and can confirm it helps if you're interested in quicker direction changes, etc. R1 rear shock is where the magic is at for aggressive track riding (along with higher rear-sets), but unnecessary otherwise.

@@Neutronb0mb I pulled the forks through the yolks 10mm and turn the bar risers 180 degrees. I'm away from my bike working on the road, so I'm not sure how many rings. But yes, very easy and easily reversible.
I understand the attraction for some for an automatic, BUT not for me. Clutch and shifting is part of the allure. I’ve ridden both, but no thank you automatic …. (By the way, GET OFF MY LAWN!! 😄)
Tim, agree in many ways. I like and prefer manual gearboxes both bikes and cars and it’s part of the whole engagement. An auto doesn’t know when you are wanting an overtake or about to navigate a corner. The future looks bleak car wise. I don’t want an EV, hybrid or auto. Thankfully there’s many an exciting and affordable bike for the time being.
Funny but every auto car I have driven knows when I want to overtake, it is called kick down.
It’s not instantaneous no matter how good the box is. Advanced driving is all about forward planning and anticipation. Whereas the ‘kickdown’ is far from it and delays being in the right gear at the right time or otherwise holding a gear to pre-empt something ahead.
I'm not a car person myself, but I hear at least BMW intend to keep on with combustion engine designs (unlike Audi...). Interestingly, out in the middle-east they are gearing up and joining forces to design new combustion engines, stating - engines will be around for a very long time!
Personally, I'm no fan of all the gizmos on bikes. I prefer to self-service my stuff. My fear is the option to not have this stuff on the bike will disappear...
@@christopherreed442the manual change on my dct box is instant, also you can rev it out in every gear. It’s basically a quick shifter, however the auto box in standard is very pedestrian, the sport mode is a a lot smoother and guicker. Both are brilliant in town, heavy traffic etc but on the open road my bike is always in manual. Especially in the Alps, the Picos et al because it’s better to select the best gear for the situation.
My opinion is….
Cars are becoming less fun, so more people might join you on two wheels for their kicks.

Agree with you. I think a quick shifter/blipper is the closest I would want to get to an auto on a bike. Even in cars I have automatics for everyday and a manual GR Yaris for fun. Off to the Vosges tomorrow!
Like many “experts” I have heard and seen comment on the “automatic” bike trend totally self centred “I’m alright Jack, so nothing should change” attitude. No empathy for others whatsoever . You even answered your own question when you talked about your own experience at the racetrack, ACCESSIBILITY. You even reference toward the end those that can no longer use a clutch and yes there are many who give up for just that reason. Apparently accessibility only applies to motoring journalists at racetracks where apparently it is cool.
I have a DCT because, due to a non-bike related injury, I am physically unable to use a foot lever shift.
The question shouldn’t be why do we need auto bikes but instead why do manufacturers make us choose? That is the question you should be posing manufacturers. With everything now becoming ride by wire and auto bikes should be as simple as an actuators for the clutch and gear change, some form of switch to select gearing(foot and paddles) and an engine management unit to control things then all bikes bikes could be run in auto or manual mode, no need to choose. The problem is manufacturers keep leaving bits out, ie BMW not including finger switches.
Why are we getting quickshifters ...
Other than medical reasons, definitely not an automatic bike. However, wouldn't have anything else than an automatic family car.
The problem with continual developments to make bikes "safer" or easier to ride you're going down the car route which as you say is boring.
As long as I’m not forced to buy one, because I have zero interest in it. It will end up like Porsche where you have to spend more money to get the manual.
Why? Well for one, maybe not just yet but eventually these automatics will be faster than any manual shift bike just like cars. Porsche’s dct is way faster than it’s 6 spd stick. Now one thing cars don’t have are quickshifters but I’ll bet that the autos will be even faster

@@timrodierides Well I'm not an adventure rider but I could see the possible advantages of an "auto" on any dirt or trail bike, not thinking about the changing of gears

It may be sooner than that, you don’t know what life will bring. Just recently one motovlogger has lost his left foot in an accident and intends to ride sure he will be happy with auto or semi auto bikes. I myself can’t use my left foot due to nerve damage many rears ago. But it is not only limb damage that can be overcome as there is a lady on Facebook who has recently bought a DCT bike because she has a brain condition which meant she had to stop riding but having less to think about with an auto means she can ride again.
Be thankful you can do what you do but don’t think you have to be 70 before you find a use it may come sooner than you think, but let’s hope not eh.

Maybe the auto boxes are to slowly get people into electric motorbikes as they will clearly be twist and go. However definitely not for this biker.

Auto's are not for existing bikers , it's to attract new converts who left foot and left hands are not programmed.
Or more to the point older ones whose hands or feet don’t work like they used to, clutch hand arthritis is fairly common. With me it is nerve damage that stops my left foot working. Don’t worry you might be there one day.

There are undoubtedly existing riders that can benefit, but I think the manufacturer's are less worried about legecy riders (myself included), and are looking to the youth. Look how Harley is battling as their demographic ages and no youngsters want what they are offering. The Play Station / Xbox generation want no more effort than they experience with a gaming console.
@@fred3527 I think they are looking in the wrong place. Looking round my local area there are plenty of teenagers on scooters, etc. the problem is they are attracted by cars (weren’t we all for obvious reasons) and, let’s face it, bikes are toys or a hobby and for that you need disposable income and most youngsters and even older that is becoming a rarity. More to the point is the significant cost of bikes these days hence the rise of Indian and Chinese made bikes.
As a new rider, would really like a auto/amt bike as opposed to scooter.
Maybe the manufacturers are gradually giving up on designing new engines because of electrification 😢 & have to offer something else to attract customers.

Tim, I'm not a fan of the Automatic transmissions on motorcycles. None of my friends who ride bikes are riding DCT motorcycles, nor do I hear them say "my next bike will be an automatic" Perhaps we need to ask who in the motorcycling industry is pushing this. Perhaps the same people who are choking the life out of every gas powered vechicle - Read EURO 5+
Honda sell more DCT bikes than manuals of the bikes where it's available. Also, While there are plenty of test riders who didn't like something about the DCT, it's very rare to find a comment or review from an OWNER who doesn't love it.
Auto bikes....?
I am old (ish), I ride and like modern bikes, auto box has no interest for me, selecting the right gear is part of enjoyment of riding, I don't want to dumb down the experience.
It's manual cars and bikes for me and always will be. Operating a real manual clutch is an important part of an engaging driving experience. I don't want riding to be easier, simpler and lazier with an auto box, and nor do I want a more intrusive annoying technology .
