  • Dr. Sasha is a psychiatrist specializing in ADHD who has ADHD herself. Today she joins your hosts to discuss her journey with the diagnosis, med school, and becoming a parent. Dr. Sasha breaks down the three hallmark features of ADHD and the various ways they can present themselves. She explains how she stopped taking her medication when she went off to school and felt like she had a stroke as she fell to the bottom of her class-by a lot. Her and her father then dove into ADHD research so she could fully understand what was going on. She explains the shocking gap in the average age of diagnosis between genders, and how people (especially women) can be diagnosed with anxiety or depression in place of ADHD because of their symptoms. She offers advice to parents potentially facing a diagnosis and emphasizes the importance of recognizing your own patterns. She also touches on ADHD and dating/relationships, and discusses her book and ADHD management app to help people with ADHD.

I can’t even begin to express how much this resonated with me!
As a woman just diagnosed with ADHD in my 30’s after spending almost my entire life wondering what’s wrong with me-both socially and academically-Dr. Sasha hit on so many things that described my experience to a T: from all the different ways my symptoms were written off as other things to having not even suspected ADD/ADHD as a possibility because I did manage to “succeed on paper” even though my mechanisms for everything from studying to participating having just been my own work-arounds to my inability to do things the “normal” way. More importantly, I’m glad she is able to help with both understanding why we function the way we do and how to work WITH that in order to have a career, relationship, etc. These are things I've wondered if I would even be capable of and have just recently begun to probe into with my own counselor--and like Dr. Sasha said, the first step is just plain understanding why we are the way we are vs. the way I've been fighting against it for so long.
    *also, a couple other notes:

-I think the diagnostic dilemma is an interesting one: While on the one hand, I fall into the category of someone who completely overlooked the dx for most of my life, I’ve also seen the newer awareness lead to a lot of self diagnosing amongst my peers, and even heard a case where a NP diagnosed someone based on a description of symptoms alone. While I DO think the awareness of this condition and the different ways it can present is important, I also think it’s important to go through the proper channels [ex. refer to a psychologist for testing] when ADD/ADHD may be indicated, rather than just jumping to the conclusion that someone has a disorder whenever there is a struggle with focus, impulsivity, etc.

-I was surprised by your shock that someone with a condition would then specialize in that condition, because I think this is quite common! I’ve known so many people who completely change career paths after going through something because they want to use their own experience to help others facing the same sorts of challenges.

You know I have adhd and I’m a 27 year old male. And what I like about her story is that like me even though we both have ADHD we still did something that was challenging and was successful at it. I spent eight years in the army and became a noncommissioned officer right now I am working with other veterans to help them with their own psychology for a living.

The one thing that hit me the most was Tay’s question about ADHD bringing about depression, something clicked about my depression when she said that, thank you for that insight. When you explained how this podcast is going to be about mental health when it started I thought that was wonderful, but I didn’t expect ADHD to be covered! Thank you all three of you for this video!

I got diagnosed with ADHD in... 2008 or so, when I was around 9 to 10 years old and I got medication and so on. It was always fine, I knew I was different but it was okay Kind of...
And now, almost 15 years later I only start to understand what it means to have ADHD and I just started learning how to work with it instead of against it... understanding ADHD is the most valuable thing when you have it... it helps so much... it is kind of mind blowing.
I love this episode. It is so calming and free from stigma. ❤

I was diagnosed at 5 and i relate so much to Dr. Sasha. I did not know what was wrong with ne or understand why i was different. The therapists back in the 90s and 00s didnt really help with that. I had to learn on my own and its been a struggle.

This is the episode I didn’t know I needed as I basically diagnosed myself w ADD at age 19 then everything made sense. I brought it up to my provider that I have been seeing since I was 2 & it was never even considered…
Also I can’t tell if Tay is wearing scrubs (which makes me excited) or wearing loungewear 🙂 as I refer to my scrubs as glorified pajamas 🤣

I’m a female and I was diagnosed the same day as my brother when I was around 10-11. They would only give my brother the medication for ADHD even though mine was worse.
I barely graduated high school and found college a lot more easy (it was subjects I actually liked). But my gpa was still super low even though I was working so hard and turning everything in on time. Tests and papers were what tanked my gpa. Because I struggled with finding the attention span to actually focus on the task 🥺

I love that you guys talked about lived experience and how sharing that with others in similar situations help not only them but ourselves in our recovery within mental health. ❤ I have been working in the mental health field since I was ❤ with high risk youth and now adults sharing lived experiences and guiding people. I'm a huge advocate for what worked for me may not work for you because coping and self care is not one size fits all. We try and learn if it works or doesn't and then we either use it or try something else. I was just recently diagnosed with adhd and honestly since the diagnosis and learning about it has helped me identify the patterns Dr. Sasha mentioned. As a result it has strengthened my marriage with my husband as he is also learning that I wasn't just angry or "crazy" for lack of a better word but experiencing the environment and everything in a different way causing over stimulation and me to "snap" or burst out. This is the first episode I've watched of your podcast, and I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. I love that you advocate for mental health it's something that wasn't talked about growing up, and I was left feeling like I was the problem or crazy. I love that it's being talked about more and is giving young children teens and adults a place to feel supported and learn about it so they are not left wondering what's wrong with themselves. Keep up the amazing work you're doing. I will definitely be watching more! ❤

Hey Tay and Taylor lautner, I know you probs get like 1000 of these so you will probably never see it but I’d like to take my chances. I’ve been watching and readings twilight since I was really young (although it was probably not very appropriate I still did) and to be honest with you since the beginning I was team Edward, but I think that’s because I wasn’t seeing the bigger picture. Over the past year I’ve realised that Jacob was the right option. Through that I started doing more research on you and your beautiful Wife Tay and realised how amazing you two are for eachother and honestly I’m a huge fan of both of you. Tay you are legit a beautiful human with an shining personality and even though I’ve never met you just looking at your content on instagram and your dogs instagram and your AMAZING podcast I cannot stop listening to, i realised how perfect of a human you are you’re really a shining star I admire so much even through the way you completely respect the friend shop Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift have and it’s actually beautiful how respectful and kind you are. On the other hand Taylor. I’m a huge fan of your work! Especially twilight it’s my comfort show and I love it so much! You’re such a kind and caring person and you have such a bright energy that just makes me feel happy and safe even if it’s through a screen. I can see how much you care for Tay and how respectful and kind you are toward her. I admire you so much in ways you can’t imagine. One being how even though you and Taylor Swift did date and I’m not sure if it’s a rumour or not but she didn’t treat you how she should’ve but you still have an outstanding friendship with her and helped her in the I can see you music video and coming out at her concert. I wish I could’ve been there it would’ve completed my life to see you, Taylor and maybe even walk past Tay if I just happened to but I couldn’t even get tickets in my own country 😞. (No hate to Taylor swift I love her music and her so much and I’m sorry if it came across that way I didn’t mean it like that) You two both are such role models and I really wish to be like you one day. Even though I don’t know you, you’ve both changed my life for the better and I appreciate you both so much.
