I realize that this was 3 years ago, but I have to leave a comment. I am disappointed with the extreme negative light on needing an antidepressant, how awful that is, feeding into the stigma of mental health challenges. As AJ experienced, they can be helpful at a real time of need. Also disappointed in both of you talking down about a mental health hospital and the people who work may also have mental health issues, like they are not allowed to be real people. Sort of like AJ being judged about teaching valuable information about health because she carried extra weight. Oy vey. Judgement is the devil. Let's remember that we all have our paths, challenges and purposes. Who are we to judge? There is a place for many different everythings - we can all agree that diversity is critical to our wellbeing! In a world with so many people suffering with mental illness, please don't make it wrong to lean on medication. And by the way, at least 95% (I wanted to say 99%) of the people I have seen get off "psych meds" especially Lexapro, are able to come off when they are ready with no physical problems, especially not like a doll who is being squeezed and her eyes and ears are popping out! Maybe you, AJ, had extra sensitivity for whatever reason, but that is NOT a 'normal' response. This kind of talk scares people to reach out for help if/when they may need it. Rich, I speak to you and your obvious negative leaning and judgement around mental health care as well. Not many people live the luxury of the lifestyle you and your circle lives. Put your money where it could be used and help support people who can't afford organic foods or supplements that could be good alternatives to medications if sustainable. I will get off my soap box now. I do love the RR podcasts and suggest them often. That is why when I saw this I just had to speak up.

I first came across Chef AJ when I was searching for a recipe online. I thought, “This woman is far too extreme!” and although I’d given up meat by that time, I thought I would never go as far as she did, avoiding oil and sugar and salt. Over the next few months I found myself going more and more in that direction as I researched the whole-food plant-based diet (which I’d never heard of till I watched one of her videos with one of the famous doctors as her guest) and now I’m 100 percent on board, apart from the salt. I have a medical condition which requires that I add salt to my diet in order to keep my electrolytes in balance but I suffer from low blood pressure so the salt does not affect me adversely.
I had heard snippets of Chef AJ’s story but never the whole thing from the beginning. I share several elements of her story in my own life and can really identify where she is coming from. She is an inspiration to so many people. I have also been in situations where the only explanation for my escaping them has been down to divine intervention. My mother always used to say that nothing you do or experience in life is ever wasted, and this has certainly proved true in my own life, and I think in Chef AJ’s. If she had not gone through all those traumas and problems, she would not be in a position today to help so many people. “Spared for a purpose” really means something!
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful interview. Definitely one to save and re-watch again and again!

I had a vegan German chocolate cake 14 or 15 years ago at "Old Dog, New Trick" in the French Quarter in New Orleans. I didn't eat dessert at the time ---- ever. They pushed it on me so hard, and I refused. They eventually demanded that I eat it for free because they wanted me to try it. It was amazing. It was sweetened with fruit juices, and the frosting was made out of whipped tofu and carob. It was so light and delicate --- you not only didn't feel heavy inside after eating it --- you actually felt lighter.

Hearing that her dad had a TBI is so sad and scary. Unfortunately, this is very common behavior after a traumatic brain injury. I feel for her because I’ve spent time working on a neuro unit with several people with TBIs and they are often completely disinhibited and aggressive. Unless you’ve witnessed it, you can’t possibly fathom the extent of these behaviors.
