"Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls" is the fifth single released by the American synthpop band Book of Love. The song was the first single released prior to the band's second album Lullaby in 1988.
"Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls" became the band's highest charting single at no. 90 in the Billboard Hot 100, and its only moment crossing over into mainstream pop. In the dance clubs, the song was a smash, and made it to no. 5 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart, spending 11 weeks on the chart.
"Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls" became one of the first songs ever to address the issue of the AIDS epidemic, featuring the lyrics of "strangers in the night exchanging glances, but sex is dangerous, I don't take my chances...safe sex, safe sex."
"We talked about AIDS at a time when people were not talking about it." -Susan Ottaviano
The B-side to the single is a cover of Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells", originally made famous as the theme from the horror movie The Exorcist. For the track, the band sampled band member Lauren Roselli crying "Mother, make it stop!", channeling Linda Blair's role as Regan from the movie. For the 12" release of the single, "Tubular Bells" and "Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls" were mixed together as a fourteen-minute medley by Scott Blackwell and Bob Brockmann. The album Lullaby also opens with a shorter version of "Tubular Bells", which flows seamlessly into "Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls", the second track on the album.
Lyric:
When I'm alone
and you're away
I just close my eyes
and I drift away
your warm body
is what I'm without
I just close my eyes
and I dream about
Pretty boys and pretty girls
pretty boys and pretty girls
(when I'm without)
pretty boys
(I dream about)
pretty girls
Stranges in the night
exchanging glances
but sex is dangerous
I don't take my chances
the boys I meet
say I look lonely
but I just walk on my
because they're only
Pretty boys and pretty girls
pretty boys and pretty girls
(when I'm without)
pretty boys
(I dream about)
pretty girls
In this day and age
in a city full of fear
with you by my side
together we can show we care
Spreading joy to the world
to every boy and every girl
Pretty boys and pretty girls
pretty boys and pretty girls
(what will we show?)
spreading joy
(where will it go?)
to the world
Vintage clothes black turtle necks, khaki parachute pants, mohair steel tipped leopard print shoes, clove cigarettes, calvin Klein obsession cologne, spiked hairstyles. Define my time club hoping and dancing to this song in the 80s.🤓
😏 go rewatch Hot Tub Time Machine 🌀
To my Glen. This was was our jam. You’re a piece of my heart. Forever
Weirdly this was barracks music at DLIFLC, P.O.M., CA, 1989
I used to absolutely LOVE dancing to this back in the day - it’s up there with Bizarre Love Triangle to me as far as great memories of clubs back in the mid to late 80s. Miss those days sometimes
Miss those days everyday. 😢 I'm 72 the 80s were the best. Started my club days at 35.
Damn, they were so, so good. This still holds up even after 3 decades. I played this as a professional club dj right after it was released, and I remember it tearing up the dancefloor. Only New Order's Blue Monday could match it in power and beauty at the time. Those were amazing nights.
This
Wouldn't it be Awesome if folks would make this kind of music again.
The next generations of ladies are thirsty for good dance music. They are thirsty for the 1980's beat but can only go to the past to find the good hits.
What if people could produce this style of music now, in this time.
It's a beautiful thing to reminisce on nightclubs back then. When this song came out. The truth of exchanging glances was euphoric❤
Yes indeed, that era of my life was the best! I was 24 years old when this came out. I use to DJ private parties and this song would usually get everyone out to dance!
I’m dropping it tonight on the dance floor in SF. Quality.
I was a junior in high school, and I remember this was so new and fresh
I'm 53 and it still sounds fresh. Such great times , thank you BOOK OF LOVE
✌😏 Freshman Here 😎📻
Saw them play in a club in Miami promoting their first big hit, BOY. Then again in Hawaii a few years later. The next day I met two of them on Waikiki Beach. They were chillin' and very friendly.
Live @ Numbers - my way back college years we drove in from Austin /UT - the three Beaumont escapees turned Longhorns wearing matching silver pants. Carrie Budd Nass you had us laughing the entire trip - Skip -David Andrew McGaffey my blasting out together Boathouse bestie buddy - thanks for the memories of that fun night (s) !! You both left this Earth way too soon (AIDS & Breast cancer) -you both were fighters til the end -I dance on in your memory, always❤️🏳️🌈⭐️
Impresionante!
Mother.... make him stop!!!.... 💃🏻🕺😎👍🏼
Ok seriously, this version is amazing!! All of you who also love this are amazing also❤
Many years ago, a friend of mine turned me onto Book of Love right after this and the 'Lullaby' album was released.
My favorite instrumental piece of music was and is Mike Oldfield's recording of 'Tubular Bells'.
This was the first song by Book of Love that she played for me..and I went nuts for them. The 'Lullaby' album is one of my favorite albums from the 80's. Still a favorite after 31 years. I was 21 when this album was released. I'll be 52 this year.
To Ted, Susan, Lauren, Jade...and to my friend, Merri...thank you.
A very powerful song imo
people probably already recognize the sampling in this, but it just occurred to me: the "mother, make it stop" is Reagan O'Neill from the Exorcist"
😏 yes it does sound a bit like the Exorcist 🔥😈🔥
It is, "Tubular Bells," after all. 🖤🖤🖤
Dancing on the speaker at Tracks in Ybor City, Tampa 1986. This song always invokes joy!
The comments are so wholesome! Wonderful song from back when I was hip.
I remember this song back in the clubs in Atlanta . Great memories
Listened to all this when I was a Goth kid - when it was very unpopular.
😂
I blasted these tracks (and the rest of Lullaby) in my teens. Obsessively. And now, at age 46, I'm listening and feeling so nostalgic that tears are in my eyes. Thank you.
Keep doing it, dammit! You're not the only one and you're making the world a better place by doing it. Thank you!
I use to dance to this back in the 80s when I was 21, this song is sexy, brings back good X-tacy memories
This song reminds me of the days at Houston's 6400 Richmond (Stereo Live).
1988-89 OP's Indianapolis. I was 21 and club music was everything! Danced many nights to this Classic.
I was there!!
Very underrated band. Their Witchcraft 12” is wikkid too. The BOL 80’s albums are must-haves for any synthpop fan.
Sire Records always put out the best 12"s back then.
Sire Records Rocked... Madonna and Depeche Mode... Hello !
Absolutely
You mean “Warner Brothers”?
1988 i was a junior in highschool school dances this was a fav
OMG! I still love this track. It remains amazing even after all these years. 🤩🍾🖤
I was too young for the 80s so I mainly heard this kind of music on goth nights in the late 90s and I was in love...
I lived in San Marcos, Tx and I happened to be in a gift shop and "Forever Young" from Alphaville was on the store's sound system. The guy working thought that it was a new song because it was on the Napoleon Dynamite sountrack, he goes "I love this new song." I respectively gave him the bad news, "this song is almost 30 yrs old." He was upset & shocked at the same time. But I looked real young for my age & he didn't believe me. I say look up Bronski Beat, Yaz,Depeche Mode, Level 42, etc. When I stopped by about a month later, all the 80's synthesizer bands were blaring over their sound system. He goes "Thank You for opening my eyes, I love this genre",I go "more like your ears buddy."
But this is completely not goth.
Goth clubs sometimes play 80's new wave like Depeche Mode, Alphaville, Camouflage as many Darkwave bands were inspired by them...
@@pdottie212fu no one said I would split your wig and bust them cheeks, but it would happen bitch.
@@pdottie212fu u mad bro??? Damn that line is older than this song. Please know your father has my pity sweetie
Great memories. Amazing band 💜
I remember dancing to this song at the Alaskan in Reynosa Tamaulipas. We would sneak out of the house Friday and Saturday nights and get back home as the sun was coming up. Times were different back then. Anyone else remember the Alaskan?
OMG...DO I Remember? We were there and at the Jet Set Fridays and Saturdays from my Sophomore year thru my Senior Year. Wild, crazy times. Mexico had no age limit for drinking i guess. We would then stop at Trevinos I think it was called to eat. Our parents never , ever having a clue we were in another country. lol.
✌😎 New Wave FTW , Keep It Old School 📻
Yes....in a moment
Incredible version
The 305 remembers
Una joya, muchas gracias por compartir. Saludos
OMG is all I can say.......GOLD
I'm 45, heard this for the first time the other day on the radio. I'm thinking it is a newly released track and come to find out it was released in '88 lol.
Club One in Dallas, Texas in the early 90's closed the night out with this and I cherish those nights out just dancing, no cares at all!
going in my mix lol @@annemurchison2441
LOVE. 🖤🖤🖤
Flood was a great Producer, did a lot of synth pop back in the 80's.
Thank you, poster. Huge band in my coming-up and coming-out years. Long live (as appropriate) the 80s and EMD. And Book of Love. Got me thru some serious sh*t back in the day.
One of the best songs from the "Just Say [Yes/Yo/Mao/etc]" compilations.
Definitely, though for the record this is not that version. The “Just Say Yo” version was the Regan’s House Medley that’s like 14 minutes long.
Those were great.
Back then I bought all their 12"s
amazing
I love this extended long intro version!
D'Hip House, Reynosa, Tamulipas, Mexico. Dancing all night and 5 dollar cover all you can drink. Great being an American teen in a foreign country

They did an awesome extended version of Tubular Bells when I saw them live back around 1990 or so. Shame no one seems to have recorded it and uploaded it.
The Old Plantation! In El Paso, TX. The O.P. dance till 4am on Fridays & Saturdays.
Amazingly good! I remember this song and the lyrics!
fantastic forgotten dance classic
Versión 12" clásica. Excelente!!!
Uncle Charlie's in Miami........they played this heavily. Crowd went INSANE.........
They played this at the old Metro on Landsdowne St. in Boston back then on Sunday Nights (Spit and Club DV8 would be combined into one club, and the cover would be an astronomical $15 in those days...but it was totally worth it to be in that club with some of the hottest bands and artists singing their dance hits. Now that venue has been torn down many years ago and replaced with a generic building behind Fenway Park's Left Field/The Green Monster that has no soul. I remember when Company B was there one night during the summer of 1988 and I thought I had died and gone to Heaven. Those days are now gone forever but oh, to have lived during that time as a 21 year old when everything was new and exciting.
We hung out in the same section of the music store.
Pretty on pink.....awesome..🤗
Lovvvvve this, reminds of of 8th grade dance.

Listen to this song and later Swan - "General Custer" was a perfect combination :)
Impresionante temazo de los 80. No lo había escuchado y lo descubrí el otro dia. Jajaja !!
summer of 1988 portland me, i was in the navy back then.
You know what is most beautiful and so in their time? (Besides the EPIC song!) It is a perfect song for the next gen because we have regressed as a society. They didn't know I would listen at 51 to a bi gender song now and feel is needs an extra amount of respect. Why? When we listened it was just a given, not a big deal. Ya know?
Houston Numbers nightclub making this happen on 6400 night!!!!!
Yes
Always, thank you Numbers!
Yes
I just discovered this song 06/2024
I landed on Earth a cowboy from Mexico, then a truck dtiver, and a Calif cop... Love this sound ....Whats "GOTH" ?
FORUM VIDEOTEQUE in Mexicali, MX. Lo MAXIMO!!!
Ok I'm desperate to understand. Is this an edit? I have the original 12 inch remixes of Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls. The track list as follows:
Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls (Extended Mix) - 7:19
Tubular Bells (7” Mix) - 4:23
Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls (7” Mix) - 4:45
Tubular Bells / Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls (Regan's House Medley) - 14:24
The ~7 minute version of Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls is not the Tubular Bells medley like in the 14 minute track meaning it does NOT start off with Tubular Bells like it does on this UA-cam post.
Is this an edit?
Perfect song making a very important statement in 1987!!
Thanks for posting!!
