      Maybe it evolves to the xenomorph we all know and love, when it's infected by the goo .. perhaps the protomorph is its original form prior to the xenomorph, then David modifies it's genome to include an exoskeleton and other genetic improvements to aid it in becoming an effective weapon? or the Engineers genetically modified the protomorphs prior to humans arrival to the Engineer planet, or some combination of all? .. that's what I think, for now, anyways .. now to watch the video ;)

    Rumour on the film set is that the new Alien wasn't meant to be so aggressive but someone accidently let it see Alien vs Predator requiem and it went on a rampage.

    As you say, there is a difference in aggressiveness between the two :
    - The protomorph from Covenant attacks relentlessly without trying to hide or think it through,
    - The Xenomorph of Alien 1 is much more of a thinker, and was hiding for most of the movie.
    The BIG difference is revealed in one of the cut scenes of Alien 1, when Ripley finds Brett and Dallas trapped in glue. We therefore can assume that the xenomorph is more of a worker (just like an ant), meaning they don't ALWAYS kill their preys and instead keep them warm in case a bunch of eggs would knock them up.
    The protomorph is just a killer and doesn't seem to want anything else than emptying every organism out of their blood.
    The Xeno is a GATHERER the Proto is a HUNTER/WARRIOR/exterminator.

  • @MrMartechi

    I do believe that the original xenomorph is the "proper" weaponized version that has been more "constructed" rather than evolving on its own. Both the Deacon and the specimen from the Covenant Trailer appear to be less controlled versions of the same thing, maybe a more natural form, maybe just an imperfect experiment.
    I believe the biomechanical parts of the original xenomorph might have included some kind of control mechanism, something that enables the "user" of the weapon to actually achieve certain goals or hunt specific targets. It doesn't make sense to just unleash feral monstrosities on an enemy. If you just want carnage and destruction, there's easier ways to do it. The xenomorphs must have had something that made them a better weapon than just a giant energy blast. Something that made them a viable weapon that we have not yet seen.

      great theory there man! really great theory

    • @MrMartechi
      @MrMartechi 7 років тому +6

      In addition to that, I still feel like we are missing a big part of the puzzle: The enemy. If the xenomorph is a weapon - what was it designed to be used against? In canon, we only know about the engineers but it doesn't look like they created the original xenomorph and even if they did, both for infighting or for use against humans it seems like a bit overkill.
      The way that xenomorphs are able to adapt to different species always led me to believe that whoever made these things anticipated to use them against a lot of different species. Why else would you need them to be able to adapt?
      In any case, it feels like we have yet to learn about the original purpose of the xenomorph.

    • @rogert151
      @rogert151 7 років тому +5

      MrMartechi I think the xenos were meant to be used as a weapon to clean planets of life, they were meant to adapt to the planets environment by taking on DNA from native species, also I believe that the engineers have some sort of a kill switch/antidote in the xeno DNA so that they can be stoped/ controlled, some sort of safeguard in case of outbreak, but no evidence of that in the movie yet, lots of good theories in the comment section ! thanks

    • @MrMartechi
      @MrMartechi 7 років тому +9

      It would make sense to have them as a weapon that kills *sentient* life, I assume. The movies are not quite coherent with this but at least in "Alien", the xenomorph specifically attack humans, not the cat. So maybe, they are meant to kill off civilizations but not the rest of the ecosystem.

    • @vanwolf2
      @vanwolf2 7 років тому

      yes rogert151, about the kill switch/antidote, I've thought that myself. it would seem dumb to use a weapon that turned out to be worse than the thing you use it against unless you had a pretty watertight solution against the weapon itself. An alternative is that a mad group of scientific engineers got carried away with experimentation, but that doesn't seem likely given the impression is they have birthed worlds, are highly tech advanced and seem to have distinct purpose. I hope in trying to explain it all they don't create a clusterfuck story full of holes. I'd have been happy with a straightforward alien horror series, but this is now full on sci-fi and there are standards against which a poorly explained story will be judged. so, no pressure lol. seems that David has contributed to this particular creature in some way though.

      During SXSW they showed that David is creating Xenomorphs through breeding.
      The alien shown here is a protomorph. I guess 2000 frozen colonists will give David ample resources to perfect the species, and since he's on Paradise he'll be able to send Engineer ships out to planets marked by WY for colonization.

    I think the difference between the original xenomorph and the one from the covenant (protomorph) is similar to the difference between the two races of engineers, the engineers from the Prometheus and the ones from the covenant (from planet 4).
    The original xenomorph is more biomechanical, and the engineers from the Prometheus wear biomechanical suits and seem stronger and more advanced. The xenomorph from the covenant is more "organic" and the engineers from the covenant look more human and primitive, and don't have biomechanical suits.
    Since the protomorph was created by David using the engineers from the covenant as their lab rats, maybe the original xenomorph was designed using the engineers similar to the engineers from the prometheus movie as labrats.

    The classic Xenomorph could be arrived at through one of two ways...
    ONE: We can presume by the precursor of its name, and due to its appearance in the first of three planned films, that the Protomorph is indeed a progenitor of the more familiar alien type. However, we can also presume that this is David's most 'successful' species to date leading up to the emergence of the "perfect organism." Now, due to the aesthetic differences between the proto and xeno types, we could say that the inclusion of a biomechanical element (and perhaps and augmentation in intelligence?) is due to the inclusion of another catalyst in the experimental process: Walter. I think that we might see David use Walter's technology as an ingredient in the evolutionary process building up to the black goo/synthetic hybrid of the xenomorph. That, or David finds a way to impregnate synthetics with a special facehugger (like the one shown at sxsw recently) and use it as an incubator for the first xenomorph strain to emerge.
    TWO: It seems as though a catastrophic event has befallen the engineer homeworld. The trailer shows thousands of petrified corpses around a temple site that proves this. Also, David has been experimenting with the black goo and doing autopsies on engineer bodies for a decade by now; I doubt this would have been even possible with engineers still living on the planet.
    The planet seems not to be an engineer homeworld but rather a religious site for the alien race. It would not make sense for a species of intergalactic "gardeners" to exist on one planet only, and I very much doubt that Ridley Scott would simply axe the entire engineer race since they are integral to the dna of these new movies. How did this catastrophe occur? I think our best bet is David and his experiments with the highly dualistic black goo substance. On the one hand, this can be the catalyst for life with a willing host, or it can be the harbinger of species genocide depending on how it is used. It is a bioweapon and a life giver simultaneously. So, with this in mind, it was probably a contamination of this element that led to the catastrophe on the planet.
    If the engineers find out about this, they are unlikely to be very happy; let alone the fact that a foreign agent is harnessing their sciento-religious construct to create destructive organisms that could potentially be a threat to their own species! Now, we know that the engineers are aware of these types of organisms due to their portrayal on the religious structures of their temples as seen in Prometheus. So what is to say that the engineers, upon discovering the genocide of their people by this imposter machine, do not unleash their own weapon of mass destruction on to David and his creations: the greater xenomorph itself.

    It's already established that the xenomorph absorbs DNA from host prior to gestation. We would have to see what the host was before knowing if this is a xenomorph or a protomorph. As of now the "on all fours" design would indicated the host was a four legged animal and warrant comparison to the xenomorph in Alien 3 which gestated from a dog.

    Awesome video. I didn't even think about some of the things you took note on. Good eye.
    I personally think it's David's version of his own Alien. I personally think that the Xenomorph was created
    by the Engineers to be put on planets that failed to meet their purpose and the Xenomorphs would invade the planet
    kill the humanoids and return the planet to neutral state to start life over again. The Xenomorphs look more weaponized than the protomorph in Covenant. You see the Alien Queen in the mural in the first movie and you see the Space Jockey in Alien fossilized with millions of eggs. So you know immediately that these aliens have been around for a long time.

We didn't see the original Xeno move to its full capabilities because it simply couldn't due to enviroment. However it still managed stay well away and ahead of the crew with speed and finesse.

    I truly believe it's a protomorph. There are just things that stand out on it that doesn't make it seem xenomorph. The head looks see through but the skull inside really doesn't look human at all so that really made me wonder, the body isn't shiny and biomechemoid-like it's actually pretty fleshy and grayish, the teeth seem more human like and lacks the canines like you explained and it's not metallic, it's lacking that Spine tube above the dorsal tubes which was present in the big chap alien and even the Warriors in aliens(only reason it wasn't on alien3 and resurrection is because the dog alien is a different sub species and the resurrection aliens have DNA altercations), it's limbs are longer than previous incarnations and it's fingers are long and flat which it most likely because it's more animal like than the xenomorph, and last but not least it's stance position in the final shot of the trailer looked animal like as well.

    Has anyone read 'Alien:Engineers' the first draft of the Prometheus script? It is fantastic, huge shame they messed around with it so much, it would have been a far better film. It shows the engineers create several types of xeno biowepons to suit different tasks. The black Xenos have hard ridged exoskeletons for armour and perhaps vacuum protection. It also had a semi transparent whitish 'squishy' xeno that could squeeze itself through very small gaps, like an octopus, great for infiltration. It also showed a fight between a hard and a squishy. That would have been a sight to behold.

    Geiger basically made Alien as we know it, Scott added plot and made a movie out of it. The original concept is of a androgyne with a phallus for a head. You can't rationalize that. You can't. It's a wild sexual fantasy. The franchise evolves as it goes but not the iconic "alien" creature.

    Do you think David is perhaps trying to recreate the already (but perhaps extinct) version of the bioweapon Xenomorph from the original movie.
    Perhaps covenants Xenomorph is a prototype in that sense. An unfinished attempt for David to rebirth the original design of the alien.
    We see on prometheus that these creatures obviously existed. Perhaps the black goo is the remnants of them or a weaponised version of their DNA.
    If so, this is like the darkest version of Jurassic park.

    Awesome video! The Xeno variant we see here is much scarier! I didn't think Ridley could top the Big Chap, which was scary, but almost beautiful as well. Big Chap feels "alien" to me (meaning alien in general like as not of the earth), while this creature feels more insect like. With an alien, you are thinking "what is it thinking?", but with an insect, its more primal, and just acting.....that is wild. The craziest part, is talking with friends of the series throughout my life joking how the original Xenomorph is so scary, could never get on earth and be stopped (this was b4 avgr....lol) and you could never see one and survive it. Now, here's one that if given chance, I'd rather see the original in a dark alley....but I know I'm dead either way!

It is meant to be an earlier version of the 1979 Xenomorph we all know and fear (I assume that's what the story was implying anyway, it could have also been a different variety), but I think this one was actually far more deadly and skilled than the one from Alien.

    I have a theory. Perhaps Xenomorphs do have normal blood. I think that the acidic fluid that comes out when their flesh is damaged is most likely a defense mechanism. What I think is that the actual acid come from glands and the acid is stored inside the dorsal fins, since they appear tube-like structures that seem to be used as storage. I think there is most likely an artery like structure that runs through the body back to the dorsal fins. When the body is damaged the artery has a way of secreting the acid out from the artery into the wounded area. The Dorsal fins serve as like a pump and reservoir that pumps the acid to the area that is damaged. That is most likely what the tubes are most likely there for.

    probably just due to it's environment. every other pure alien movie was set in closed spaces, this leaner body is probably because the setting is more open. it's also probably more aggressive on the assault due to needing to track down prey faster. it seems much more set on kill than capture in the trailer.

    Love the content H, I've just come across this now as a more recent subscriber. For what it's worth now that covenant has been out for over a year, I think maybe somewhere down the line after these events, the classic design has come from one of the embryos that Walter had stored in his body gestated over a period of time as a result of him forgetting he still had one in his body. Definitely plausible and would explain the bio-mechanical integration more

  • @RayGerena

    I recall reading somewhere, perhaps an interview with Gieger or Scott, that the environment the creature was in was a modifying factor in the appearance of the Xenomorph in the original Alien which is why it had bio-mechanical characteristics. Those bio-mechanical characteristic helped it blend in with it's surroundings making it a more effective killer.
    This, in addition to the host DNA could explain all the variety we see in creatures resulting from human hosts.

    Well, the trailer shows Billy Cruddup's character on the ground in the throes of a chestburster coming out his chest. It's very brief, but screen captures i've seen reveal this to be the case. David presumably lures him into whatever room/cave/part of the engineer ship that has the eggs and from there we know what happens to him. I really wish they hadn't put that part in the trailer. They could have shown the leaping facehugger closeup, the eggs without seeing his character etc.

    The filmmaker's visualization abilities together with the concepts changed over time. The screenwriters come up with new sub-worlds which get their own design - even though attempted to adhere to the original as closely as possible - but including quite some artistic freedom still - on top of it all. And that's as simple as that.

    We do know that Xenomorph takes traits of their hosts...We don't know how much those traits are important on the final apearance. (except for Aliens where they're all quite the same, but considering the lack of budget they only had 6 suits....soooooo). What we see is that the Alien from the original Alien has 6 "fingers" (0:43) and this one has 5 (2:37). I don't think if one can know if a slight change in apearance is a real hint or just a comodity to make the Alien look better or more aressive...to much speculation is to much sometimes.... Anyway, thanks for sharng your thoughts

    Something needs to be kept in mind, in regard to "The Big Chap.' It was a suit, and it was the late 70s. Their ability to create and display the concept designs of the Original Alien, were limited. The reason there is more bulk, webbing between the fingers and less prominence in its see through dome is the fact that "The Big Chap' had to be worn and was a suit with an actual person inside it. That alone accounts for the difference in standing upright or being on all fours. The see through dome was to allow the guy to see, explained in the making of Alien, and Ripley Scott also explains their limitations in presenting the concept Xenomorph were due to present day advances in on screen technology. The only concept design changes from this Xenomorph from the original Alien are the lack of biomechanical augmentations. I would imagine that is merely an oversight or Ripley Scott simply didn't want the Xenomorphs to appear more biomechanical after their designs in the following movies seemed better.

    Great video and good theories. My theory behind the Protomorph seen in the trailer is that this could potentially be a mutated/altered strain that David has been experimenting with on the Engineer home planet. More than likely David discovered the original Xenomorph strains and after some testing and seeing the life cycle of the creature, he believed he could make it better, superior even.
    Doing more research into the Engineer's own work, what he saw on LV-223, and even Humanities own work on biological organisms, David has successfully created this new strain of Xenomorph; the Protomorph; a more aggressive and potentially more powerful creature compared to the original, but one that appears less biomechanical and more organic like the Deacon or in his mind, like Humans.
    He is unable to test the strain due to not having any subjects, as more than likely by this time or beforehand, Dr Shaw has discovered David's work and his own purpose and has gone into hiding somewhere on the planet.
    Unable to test his work, David continues into other fields of work in the Xenomorph species and the spores seen in the second trailer, are a result and with the arrival of the Covenant, David now has many subject to test his progress with both the Neomorph and the Protomorph, and see how they compare to the original Xenomorph.
    A sound theory?

    Firstly I'd like to say the content on hybrid network, this channel and alien theory is great. I can see why you guys recently collaborated. Second I'd like to say that Nicholas Hostetter also produces some great fan service to the alien franchise and makes some great theory videos. I'd like to see one of the aforementioned tackle the subject of the alien eggs on the juggernaut on Paradise. I think there are only 2 options here. They were there already, or David put them there. if it's the latter... then where did he get the eggs from? and what could this mean for Shaw? seen as the planet is indeed, lifeless. Shaw could likely be David's source for eggs. Which to me, kind of explains why Scott makes a point of showing us Shaw's dogtags. To make the viewer think she is dead so when her fate is revealed the shock value is higher. If she is a progenitor, imagine the state her body is in. I came across a comment saying David gets to Shaw and puts her in hypersleep so he can harvest eggs ready for the covenants arrival. Although I don't believe it fully, it's certainly possible. Fan fiction or close to the mark, it doesn't matter. The theory is part of the fun.

    Naturally you're going to have variations in what the Xenomorphs look like from film to film just based on the art department and effects technologies available to the film makers at the time of production. However, I think this plays well into the nature of the Xenomorph nicely since they take on the characteristics of the host that births them. And now it seems even more so with variations in larval stage as well. It's one of the few instances where a lack of continuity in character design between productions can really add to the story.

    If this story is headed in the direction I think it's going (if we even get another movie); I think David got one of the Engineer created eggs and experimented with it. Who knows, maybe somewhere on the juggernaut that David and Elizabeth left LV-223 in, there were already some Enginner eggs in an unexplored area and David found and utilized one of those for his experiments?

  • @Nga_Babaye

    Still think Shaw is going end up being the big bad queen, and this comes from her want to be a mother but could not. It only makes sense for this, and one of two things I have been speculating could happen: 1.) Being the way she was introduced the black goo, we were left with the impression she gave birth to squid thing and Scott made us think that was all that happened to her. However, I think we all missed it with her. She could still have been changing and by the time David and her arrive to LV-whatever she is a large fucking queen protomorph and she kills every last engineer, and the few stragglers get faced hugged and become deacons who the crew stumbles on. The deacon-esque ones shouldn't come from humans. 2.) Shaw becomes a willing sacrifice and mother to something new, the protomorph, which seems more likely, though I am not ready to discredit either.

    • @Nga_Babaye
      @Nga_Babaye 7 років тому

      Going back to post-birth Shaw, you can look at it that for a woman who just had surgery and is pumped up on a downers (pain medicine) she seems more fit than Vickers and more agile than the engineer. Maybe she is because she her body is slowly changing into something else and she doesn't realize it. As ridiculous as it was for her to accomplish what she did, maybe there was a reason Scott left it out.

    I would also point out that the protomorp is new in comparison to the xenomorph. You see in the clip of Aliens VS Predators that the xenomorphs were around far beyond human technology to be used as game making it newer. I believe that the link between human genetics and the xenomorph's are similar because the 'baby' Shaw ripped from her was a facehugger of sort that acted in the same way as the original though it has human dna mixed in making it a hybrid. If this makes sense, please let me know lol.

    what do you think of this, in covenant , the alien has no acid blood and is light and nimble. the alien is then picked up and its DNA is modified by predators to make it a super weapon worth hunting, adding acidity to its blood and giving it a sort of armour(the metallic appearance we all know and love). This shows us how it came to be and why the predators hunt this creature so often.

  • @mwc2k

    I remember in a previous video you talk about how the type of alien is dependent on the host it comes out of, meaning an alien coming out of a dog, human, or predator are all different. could a difference between the original alien and the covenant one be dependent on the personality of the host it came out of. This might explain why the original alien was more calculating because he came out of a scientist and the Aliens in the second movie seemed more militarian because they came out of soldiers. just a little thought.

    The idea of this being the natural state of a Xenomorph appeals to me, and makes sense as well. To me, anyway. It makes sense because when you actually take a close look at Xenomorphs as we've seen them up until now, you can tell they've clearly been engineered into an even more efficient killing "machine" (don't even need 3 guesses to understand by who). I'd imagine samples of the strongest and smartest specimens were taken off their homeworld, Xenomorph Prime, by the Engineers.
    So I myself would class it as more of a primal xeno than a proto/primordial xeno.

    I believe it's just a simple design refresh. From Bugattis to comic book characters to coins and notes... everything gets a design refresh from time to time.
    H.R. Geiger's original design was beautifully horrifying and visceral but, in the end, what a xenomorph looks like will depend on the director, the story and how the xenomorph has to perform therein.
