- I actually bought this Kawasaki KLX230 for my daughter a few months ago, but it hasn't really made its way to the channel yet because I was hoping to have her do this KLX230 mods video herself. She's been busy so I decided to just hop on and introduce you to the new Kawasaki KLX230 I'll be testing and riding and slap on a few of the new mods I've picked up for it so far. In this video, we'll revisit the whole KLX230 new bike day experience and then install new DoubleTake dual sport mirrors, a new Tusk air filter, Tusk skidplate, and a hugely upgraded KLX230 headlight from our friends at Cyclops Adventure Sports.

Hey can you try more flooded experiment with the 2002 aprillia pegaso 650 cause I live in a 3rd world country and wanted to know if the aprillia pegaso can survive massive amounts of water and if it is easy to drive in between huge traffic
Hey Ben, Is your motorcycle stand permanent or mobile? If permanent, when all the way down, could a standard car park over it?
Gotta give credit went it is due. Getting your child into dirtbikes, endorsed and excited about motocamping is what its all about.
Well done.
Every teenager's dream hang out with there dad and his friends....... having kids of my own love it. And glad to see she has a new bike !
As a relatively new dual sport rider with a 6 month old daughter this shit is so wholesome 🥲
Mate, cut a bit off the edge of the bash plate near the oil filter so that it is not necessary to remove the bash plate in order to access the oil filter. Use a sharpie to mark the location of the cut-away before removing the bash plate. It's aluminum so should be easy to cut a bit off with a hack saw and then file the cut edge smooth. Easy peasy.
It's a good reason to go buy a Dremel set if you don't already have one
I was on my way to buy a used WR250. Me and my buddy stopped at a Kawi dealer (I forget what for) and I took a test ride on a 230. I bought it. I loved it. I later traded it for a Honda Rally 300. I regret trading it in. I don't regret buying the Rally. But I should have kept the 230 as well. It was just so easy and fun to ride.
This man will literally do anything to avoid recommending the klx300 over the cfr300.
As a KLX230 owner who has been modding the bike out for his spouse I'll say I love this video. I've got a CRF300l for myself so between the 2 bikes I really get a lot of knowledge from Ben.
KLX230 was my intro to dual sport been an adv rider for years. Moved to a Rally this year but miss my 230. Excellent bike.
Hi Ben! Giant Loop went great but missed seeing you there. Grace did a great job with her videos she shared. They where fantastic. The last two GL rides I came alone but this year my son came with me and we had a great time. I think he was looking forward to meeting you but thing happen and we are glad you are feeling better. I have a Honda 230 and I agree with you that they are under rated. They are great little bikes especially for riding in the woods.
Cheers! Looking forward to the KLX vids! Great little bikes :)
Liking the smash into pieces in the background.
Glad you are feeling better.
Welcome back Ben and welcome back to The Point ! EXCELLENT !
Cool, love the KLX. Just curious, I know you had the Yamaha XT for her; did you just want something newer? And finally, did you consider a newer XT250 and if so, why the KLX over it? I do remember when she rode your CRF250L and it seemed to big (to her at least). Anyway, just wondering; I have a 21 y/o daughter that's looking to get her endorsement next month so we can do some moto camping also and was trying myself to see what will be best for her. She's vertically challenged at 5 feet. Glad you are feeling better!
Congratulations to your daughter and her great dad for this wonderful purchase! I seriously considered it for my first true dual sport, aside from my behemoth KLR650. Instead, I purchased 2024 KLX300 though I really wish the seat was as low as the 230! Look forward to following your daughter's adventures on her new ride and you two together sharing Father/Daughter experiences as I did with my twin sons when they first started riding. My one son just purchased a DRZ400 so he can teach me how to properly ride off road when I visit him in NC.. Cheers to you for helping your daughter experience your passion!
Awesome, looking forward to content about this bike.
Glad you’re feeling better
Awesome Dork.
Happy for you and her.
Great choice.
Enjoy!
🏍️💨
Thanks, Ben. Awesome video on the small bikeLil dork will have a blast
Glad to see you feeling better. Your older videos got me to pick up a leftover DRZ last year, what a machine.
Thank you for this video. As a father of a daughter, the opening video is is so on point.
Great dadding. Great video.
I have owned two of these and they are very fun even though the 300 rally is my primary. Think about another pretty often. Just so compact and fun
More wholesome dad/daughter content. You remember what it's like to be a noob, so you'll be a great riding buddy for her. Life-long memories coming up! On the skid plate - just mark where you need to modify it, use your grinding wheel and shape it down. I had to do that with my KTM 640 Adventure when I added crash bars. No big deal. BTW, excellent headlight upgrade. I need to contact Cyclops to see if they have an upgrade for the weak headlight on my 640 -- or add auxiliary lights to it.
Bought a KLX 230s in March. Like it a lot more than I thought I would! Good bike (especially for a short person)
Just take your dremel and customize your skid plate for oil filter access. Keep up the work dork!!
glad you're feeling better, father n son trips are great, my son and I just did a Moab (4 wheel drive trip), Grand Canyon, Zion, Vegas, all in one go from BC...its a great way to spend time with your kids !
You just make everyone want to ride a motorcycle, Ben! Awesome to see the offspring interested.
Also, wanted to say thank you for the gaint loop info through the years. I just ordered the Mototrekk Paniers, mounts, and a 1 gal. Armadillo bag and the DORKINTHEROAD discount code still works!
Awesome!!! A buddy and I just rode up over from Lebanon to Green Peter to Detroit and back!
New bike day is the best day!
I look forward to a father - daughter moto-adventure-camping trip. Happy New Bike Day 🏍️🎉
Got a KLX230S ABS for my wife who has never ridden. It has been a perfect, non-intimidating bike. Plenty of power on and off road for her. We do lots of paved roads and a few service/dirt roads.
Perfect bike for that.
Is it tall tho ?
@@leeinwisthe klx230s (s=short) I purchased is not tall.
Great video
I love the KLX, and hope there are more accessories in the future made for it
Great to see you're back! I'd take an angle grinder to that skid plate to make room to remove the oil filter bolt
good tunes in the air filter timezone seen them live in toronto they rock !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got thet 230r and love it. I'm 220lb and it handles me fine. when I want to go extreemly fast I take my 500exc but this 230r handles amazing at low speeds and technical terrain. I added the Pro Cuicut T6 (you need to order your own gasket for the join) and did the idle fix (20min part switch). new exhaust slip makes a big difference!
I thought it really cool and vulnerable to have brought your daughter along with you in this video. I feel like I trust you more as a content creator. Something I want to do with my daughter!
Great video ❤️
Smash Into Pieces!! Nice, I thought I was the only American that listened to them
Missed you at Giant Loop. Glad you’re better. On the last day I went down on Stinkwater trail: contusions on multiple ribs and separated my shoulders. Maybe an episode on what to carry for first aid and protective gear. Just a thought.
Thanks, Ben. GREAT video of some basic maintenance and mods. Real confidence builder for us new to dual sport, and moto in general. Have been considering this 230 klx and the 300 crf L (actually, the “s” version of both - got short legs. LOL)
Wondering if you would please consider including a little comparing/contrasting of 230 vs 300 “sizes”/capabilities as just a minor component to all your upcoming content with these two bikes/ size ranges. I am looking to get something in this general range of dual sports for learning, developing and honing off-road/adventure skills, but would be nice if had the potential for doing a BDR or at least backroad camping tour.
Again, thanks for your great content, mindset and community building efforts. 🤗
The ‘24 models are very slick
I was just looking at a KLX 230 to put around on local dirt roads through the national forests with. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience with the bike.
Great bike for that and so cheap!
Glad you're feeling better! I just recently found your channel and got back into motorcycles myself. I'm super excited to get my XR600R out and do some riding soon!
That's a great bike.
@@DorkintheRoad For sure! I just have to get it jetted right and it'll be ready to go!
That skid plate that blocks the filter screw, .. take a small hole saw and drill out a circle to allow you access to the screw or bolt in the future. . Happy riding with your daughter.👌👍🏼
How about a rat tail file. Al files easy.
I have 3 230's they are great for tooling around in the woods.
My 8 year old has ridden our ‘73 Honda z50 but that’s about as far as I e gotten her into riding yet. My 5 year old is nuts and if she could just keep the bars straight, she’d be one to fear on a track! When I grow up, I want to be more like you, Ben… 😉
Can't wait to see the Dork and Lil Dork bike camping video!
No way just got my first bike and it's a 21 klx230 having a lot of fun on it! I learned about moto camping from you! So pumped to see you have one as well I look forward to seeing how you kit it out ,thanks for the video. I also saw you and Joe Robinson are friends, do you plan on doing a video together sometime?
Good job, nice bike. I don’t care who you are, small bikes are a blast to ride!
I have 3 different types of saws that would trim that part of the skid plate that’s in the way of removing the oil filter. And all 3 cut through aluminum like butter.
not a terrible idea
Something you gotta watch out for with these KLX230's is that theyre green, and you gotta refuel em when the gas tanks empty. Some pretty known issues with them.
Damn.. beat me to it. I was about to buy this exact bike for my daughter lmao.
I didn't know you had a KLX230! I had the low suspension KLX230S as my first bike. Wish I hadn't gotten rid of it, but if I ever get another dual sport it's going to be a DR650 or something else with more power for the road.
Hey Dork, I have a Klx 230 and highly suggest getting a KLX230 Gear Shifter Rod Saver, from Hivolt spares. When your daughter drops her bike the shifter will bend and render the bike inoperable. Good luck!
Thanks for this suggestion. I need to look this up. I just fixed this problem.
Solid video. I would think you have a dremil tool or grinder to take away a bit of that material in the way of the screw.
My wife picked up a klx230 and she loves it. HiVolt Spares is the KLX place, they have a manual idle screw if you do not care for the high idle. Check them out....they have a 14L gas tank. =) This in on the "wish list"
I wish I could get my daughter interested in the idea of motorcycle riding.
Very cool.
As far as the skid plate covering the one bolt, drill a hole as big as you 8 mm socket, (15/32” - 1/2”) In the skid plate. (Assuming it’s an 8 mm)
Okay I like that idea. That's easy and simple.
I would definitely be modding that skid plate to be able to change the oil filter.
'Lil has the coolest dad!
Dorks new riding buddy. NO MUTE button
I love this. I hope my daughter and I can have a relationship like you two
I have one. An if you Dad/Pops say change the tires do it. Be safe an enjoy.
I wish my daughter took a liking to bikes. She did give it a try. Maybe she'll come around.
Love everything about the subject here - especially the daughter involvement. My son has a Yamaha XT-225 which I rode for a day in the woods with a significant amount of extra girth than he. I found it to be possibly the smoothest riding dual sport I have ever encountered, wonder if the KLX 230 will be a similar experience for you? Yep, the oil change challenge with the filter is annoying - what are the thoughts here on only changing the filter every OTHER oil change?
You can probably cut the skid plate yourself to give you access to that screw. Or maybe even just drill a hole so you can get a socket through, and still maintain the protection the skid plate provides.
I think a dremel would fix that oil filter cover bolt issue. Aluminum is soft enough it wouldn't take long.
Thats totally awesome that you are passing it down to your daughter. I am sure she will have a great time. Nice work
Get the Seat Concepts cover kit (not the low profile) NOW!
You could drill a hole for tool access for the filter fastener; drill a small pilot hole then enlarge to a size appropriate completely retract/reinstall the fastener. close guess at alignment is fine as I have seen some factory access openings quite out alignment,. HAY if they can do it you can too.
Otherwise, I follow your chanel, checking every day and you are to blame for getting me interested in Motocamping once again,,btw I'm pretty close to 78yrs. young
My son has one and it's a great bike. What size d sport did you put on the back?
I wouldn't mind having a KLX300
I tested the motard version and I felt it was under-powered, but I was also riding with the sales guy so I couldn't go to town, I wanted to use this as a 2nd bike.
I have so much fun on my KLX300, so much less physical and mental fatigue than the Pan America once it gets more than forest service roads.
"I'm not so good with the electrical..." Proceeds to go after the a nut with an adjustable wrench as mechanics flinch.
LOL
You rock, Ben. Any suggestions for how to get the young'nes into riding? Mine like to 2-up on the cruiser, but they're not really into riding themselves.
I only use those on mirrors I'm getting rid of anyway. Also I'm not so good with the mechanical. ;)
Off road is more fun than on road. Maybe get them on a small quad or a CRF50 or 110 depending on their age?
Every young lady should be begging to hang out with their dad and his friends. Safest place she could ever be!
I've got a buddy who had a KLX230R and a couple buddies with CRF250Fs. I got to ride both of those bikes back to back. I liked the CRF250F a bit more, but I was strictly trail riding, and never at really high speed. I'd buy either one, whichever I could get the best deal on, they were so close. I've thought about buying either a KLX230R or CRF250F to have on hand as a buddy bike. If so, I'd like to put a dual sport kit on it for connecting trails. How about testing the KLX230 against your CRF250F? How do they compare off road? I wonder how much off road capability is lost by it being a dual sport.
Great stuff mate! Quick question: D-Sports or Waypoints for my CRF Rally? I use this bike for everything but enduro… appreciate your .02!
Cheers
I have Dsports on mine. They're great even on the highway in my opinion.
I'm about to put the Waypoints on my Transalp so that opinion might change.
Ta very much! I will keep my eyes on your channel for some beta! I had Mitas E07s that are shite on anything but dry pavement or the mildest of dry gravel... :(
What about DSport front, Waypoint rear??? 🤷♂
Hit me up if your going to get rid of those stock mirrors, look like they would be better than the crappy ones I have on my xt225 lol
Hey! How tall is she or I guess what's her inseam? I'm a shorter dude (5'5" 28" inseam) and have been eyeballing this bike for a proper dirt oriented bike since we can plate them in CO. I'd love to know if this is a good one to consider! Thanks, I love all your videos!
The 230 is a great bike, little dork will love it. Double take mirrors are sooooo ugly
Unsure if it's been asked or said. What size rear tire did you end up putting on?
What music were you listening to in the shop? I'd love to know the name of the band!!
What happened to the Yamaha? Wasn't the XT street legal too?
Why did you choose the 230 over the 300? Not being overly familiar with either, it seems a bit odd to me that Kawasaki offers both, with a price difference that is not huge.
I am interested in that hitch bike carrier. I got one from cycle gear on sale but, my vehicle tongue weight limit 350 Lbs.can't hold my bike. I am still interested in the capabilities of that carrier.
What happened to the xt225???
L'il Dork isn't so little anymore.
Yer lucky, my teen daughter fears all things not scary but no things actually dangerous. Oh well, oh well....
Will you be on the ORBDR this summer?
Sections of it for sure. I might try to do a big chunk of it on the 300 at some point.
@@DorkintheRoad I’ll be going again the week after the Fourth of July. Last year we did it on memorial weekend and was stopped by too much snow in spots
Did you give up on the XT250?
It was an XT225. It just sat for over a year so I sold it back to the original owner. I bought this one because I can at least make content on it if she doesn't end up riding.
Did she get a chance to ride it before you threw a bunch of junk on it? How'd she know the bars suck? I think its yours not hers.
Why not the SM version?
Because we're riding off road.
Did you miss giant loop being sick??
Sadly, yes.
@@DorkintheRoad awe man that’s no fun. Glad you’re feeling better!
What ever happened to Lil dorks xt225?
It just sat for a year so I sold it back to the original owner.
I'd be afraid to ride with you everyone that does gets hurt
You should be careful about Playing music that UA-cam could flag 😉 I wish there was a way around that crap because it's not like it's a direct copy of whatever song and or a studio quality version of it...
It's why the cuts aren't any longer than 3-5 seconds. No issues so far.
The forks are absurdly weak .
Cut the skid plate yourself.
