Agreed. I was audibly confused and then visibly relaxed when the prevideo commercial was missing. And, who knew a dethatching soundtrack could slap so hard?
You got that right. It did not take me long to figure out why my Dad always turned this project over to my brother and me. I would rake my arms off for what seemed like hours and only cover a small section.
I am a senior, and have been using one of these rakes for about 3 springs now. It is super easy to use, removes a ton of thatch, and I can do it for hours without getting sore muscles.
I was skeptical about thatching my lawn, but after watching this video I immediately went down to Home Depot and bought a thatching rake and I also picked up one of those guys in the parking lot looking for work. Thatching my lawn was easier than I thought.
Great voice on the video. Thank you for not yelling at me. I love videos where people just talk softly and provide good info. I can tell you have a great camera too.
Thanks for the video, I had made the decision/mistake to rake dethatch my yard I didn't realize how labor intensive it was and have about a half a football field to take care of. I've always had a lot of respect for people who do professional yard work and have even more as I slowly work over my own yard.
I bought a Craftsman one from Lowe's to remove overgrown weeds and roots from my yard. So far it's done its job. Tedious work and a good workout to say the least.
Thank you for this clear explanation about the use of rakes. My lawn has become kind of spongy so I need to dethatch it. Found this video and solved my question on how to do it. Cheers!
I did my 10000 sq ft with that rake and it took me around 2 weeks. Quite the workout! I used it when i was killing off my bermuda last year to pull up the surface runners and make it easier to scalp. That was minimal levels of fun.
Funky Dunky 1 spent $80 and rented a power rake, detached 10ksqft in 40mins, then a couple hours to hand rake and pick up the piles. Best $80 I spent all summer!
Great video! I bought a thatching rake years ago but never liked using it because I wasn't doing it right! Can't wait to get out there and do my lawn! Thank you!
Great info, thank you. I've been spending a ton of time cleaning my rake with the old clippings every couple of feet. I never thought to just keep going back and forth and let it clean itself out. I also never knew that you could adjust the de-thatching rake for how deep you want to go into the lawn.
Knowledge is king. I've had this rake for 20 years handed down and never knew what it was for. Now I'm using it to touch up where the power rake missed some low spots and it works amazingly well and without really putting any real muscle into it. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. My lawn is full of dead grass blades this Spring and I was trying to remove it by pressing really hard with a normal leaf ake, which was hardly working. I had heard of thatching rakes, but thought they woold pull out the grass by the roots. I'm not looking forward to doing it, buyt I see that many people commented that they enjoyed doing it.
This is actually helpful. I purchased a thatch rake last week to do a leveling project and was using it completely wrong. Lol still worked pretty good though.
thanks, I just get one and I used it and because my grass has runners it took a lot of the grass up. but I did some more and I think I had it and it seemed better but now I'll be dethatching like a pro now.
Hi, I've only got a small lawn, not big enough to justify an electric scarifier, this looks ideal for my needs, my local B&Q store has one in stock, I'm on my way. Great video, thanks.
Fall or Spring if you're on a routine. But really if it hasn't been done for a long time, do it now. You don't want to do it more than once a year though because it can be a bit tough on the grass. Also, buildup shouldn't be bad enough to need to do it more than yearly.
Will this cut up my bermuda grass? My lawn is bermuda and I'd like to keep it. Does lawn need to be dry or wet when doing this? And how often should we dethatch?
How much pressure do we use when using these? A lot of not much? I used mine today and ripped out some grass, although it was arguably bad grass anyway.
I wouldn't say it's good for that, but it's a necessary step to exposing the vines. Creeping Charlies seem to be one of these easiest vine plant to get rid of but they sprawl fast.
I should’ve watched this before trying it for the first time. First, I didn’t adjust the rake and second I definitely tried to muscle it. I’m hurting lol
Front lawn is a hill and also like 50% moss now. Moss is dying thanks to moss-b-gone. I really hope this'll help pull the dead moss and spongy thatch layer out. I can't really get a mechanized tool because hill, a walk behind mower is sketchy enough as it is.
would you recommend using this on a st aug lawn? im just a bit scared of ripping up the stolons but at the same time i know theres quite a bit of thatch on my lawn
I just buyed the same tool two days ago but no idea to use it. So Thank you for posting this! BTW I subbed to you too. My yard is pretty and won Yard of Month on May but I don't know everything about my yard. Now you are my new teacher...
Hi, at 2:50 you started raking and then sped the camera to show the after picture you're done. How long did you rake back and forth just that spot that you speed?
While I enjoy taking care of my lawn and garden, that is just crazy! I rent a "power rake" to dethatch. It's so much faster and less back breaking. 80$ for a full day, or 40$ for half day, it's money well spent. Then, run the mower over it to pick up the thatch and done. I couldn't imagine doing that to your whole property. Great demo though and video! It will definitely work.
Yeah this video was more for those who just wanted to understand what the rake does and to demonstrate that. I'm not planning on doing my whole yard! :)
Renting one is kind of silly. You can buy a decent one for a little over $100. Considering a day rental is usually $70-$80, just makes more sense to buy one so you always have it available.
SpencerFcp, that's true if those ones for 150$ work decently. The ones for rent are usually commercial units with 6.0hp Honda engines that retail between 1000$ - 1500$. That is a bit for most homeowners who dethatch the lawn once, maybe twice a year. However, I would like to look into one of these cheaper units to see if it would be worthwhile. Thanks for the tip!
Yes, but this type of rake gives you a lot more ability to fine tune your approach than the power rake. Use on the whole yard depends on how much time you have for it, the condition and size of your yard, and your overall general health. Frankly, I see this and other yard work as an attractive alternative to paying a gym membership to work out on machines that produce nothing. Other reasons for working out, I know, but just sayin'...
Thank you, I have a rake and I didn't know that it could be adjusted. I think once I adjust it, It will be easier to thatch. When is the best season to thatch?
Super helpful. Just got one of these at Lowe's. Planning up clean up before Fall reseeding. I think it would be helpful if you could elaborate on how to determine which thatching tine angle is the best for what situation.
Hi Ryan - when I use the thatch rake (first time ever on my lawn), should it be hard in some areas to pull the thatch out? I am pulling up very little green grass, but some areas are so full of thatch I am afraid I may damage the lawn if I go at it too hard.

Any danger of pulling roots out? Seems aggressive.
Any reason to set to dig deeper? Can this rake scarify safely
Sometimes I think, 30s isn't old yet. Then I find myself enjoying a lawn dethatching video
I'm in the same boat
RIGHT?!?! fml hahaha
This shit just hit home too hard
My exact thoughts right now...
Story of my life.
No ads. No begging for likes. Just a man sharing his passion.. this is how UA-cam should be!! Huge thumbs up!
Agreed. I was audibly confused and then visibly relaxed when the prevideo commercial was missing. And, who knew a dethatching soundtrack could slap so hard?
This is how it was when it first came out for years
When I was a kid we didn't get supper till we did this to our lawn. That was 30 years ago and I still haven't eaten
You got that right. It did not take me long to figure out why my Dad always turned this project over to my brother and me. I would rake my arms off for what seemed like hours and only cover a small section.
Lol!
You had to dethatch your lawn every night!!!
😂😂
🤣🤣
I am a senior, and have been using one of these rakes for about 3 springs now. It is super easy to use, removes a ton of thatch, and I can do it for hours without getting sore muscles.

Great voice on the video. Thank you for not yelling at me. I love videos where people just talk softly and provide good info. I can tell you have a great camera too.
Found one at an estate sale. My friends and I refer to it as the “Death Rake.” I have designated it my preferred zombie apocalypse melee weapon
It's all about the Pulaski tool or battery pole saw :))
I found one of these and I walk around the hood with it. Im safe now and no one bothers me. Thanks.
Just got one of these and tried it in random parts of my yard. Pretty sure 98% of my lawn is thatch 😂
Thanks for the video, I had made the decision/mistake to rake dethatch my yard I didn't realize how labor intensive it was and have about a half a football field to take care of. I've always had a lot of respect for people who do professional yard work and have even more as I slowly work over my own yard.
Best music I have heard on the majority of other UA-cam videos. The video was also brief and informative. Thank you for sharing.
I bought a Craftsman one from Lowe's to remove overgrown weeds and roots from my yard. So far it's done its job. Tedious work and a good workout to say the least.
Best "101" video on thatch rake education.
Thanks! I always wondered what the weird shaped rake in my garage was for. Now I know.. time to get to work.
Thank you for this clear explanation about the use of rakes. My lawn has become kind of spongy so I need to dethatch it. Found this video and solved my question on how to do it. Cheers!
Thank you for this video. I almost tore up my lawn, but your video saved it!
I did my 10000 sq ft with that rake and it took me around 2 weeks. Quite the workout! I used it when i was killing off my bermuda last year to pull up the surface runners and make it easier to scalp. That was minimal levels of fun.
That sounds like a ton of work for sure.
I just did 10k sq ft in 12 hours. Never again.
Thank you!
Bought one of these rakes and did half the yard today. This thing is great. Thanks for the awesome video.
Ace harware 36 dollars.
i was gonna buy an electric one. but considering i have a smaller yard and enjoy the physical work. (and cheaper) i bought one of these. love it!
Great info, thank you. I've been spending a ton of time cleaning my rake with the old clippings every couple of feet. I never thought to just keep going back and forth and let it clean itself out. I also never knew that you could adjust the de-thatching rake for how deep you want to go into the lawn.
Glad the video could help out! Thanks for watching.
I just bought one in preparation of the upcoming fall overseeding. I can’t wait to try it.
Thanks for not having commercials!
Knowledge is king. I've had this rake for 20 years handed down and never knew what it was for. Now I'm using it to touch up where the power rake missed some low spots and it works amazingly well and without really putting any real muscle into it. Thanks!
Awesome vid! Concise yet full of information about adjustment, design, technique and before and after. Well done.
You've convinced me to spend the $40 dollars for the dethatching rake, good explanation, thanks for posting.
Just got the same rake. Thanks for taking the time to show how to use it properly.
Thanks for the demo. I went to Home Depot and got the same thatching rake; I can't believe the amount of thatch I've removed from my lawn.
Really useful video. Thanks. I’ve just bought one of these for some ‘lockdown’ garden maintenance so looking forward to giving it a go.
When is it a good time to thatch? I put winterize on already. I was wondering can I do it before or during the leaves on the grass.
Thanks for showing how the two sides of the rake differ for different uses!
You are welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. I have never owned a lawn and saw a lot of overlapping dead grass. Used your technique and it has helped my lawn !
Thanks. Just bought one today and wasn’t quite sure how to use it. Amazing the amount of thatch I’m pulling out of my yard.
Didn't know why my grass was so yello even with alot of watering and fertilizing. Then i realized that the dead grass underneath was choking my lawn.
Thank you just picked one up, now off to do some lawn care.
This is actually helpful. I purchased a thatch rake last week to do a leveling project and was using it completely wrong. Lol still worked pretty good though.
Simple and useful video. I especially like the before and after close ups. Thanks!
Just bought me one cant wait to wear my arms out
And back... just did my 2,500 sq ft front yard lol
Thanks for the instructions. Just what I was looking for. Great job too!
Great for small lawns and hard to reach area's but electric or petrol scarifier will save you so much time it's the bagging that takes time, great vid
Absolutely correct. I love my greenworks electric machine
Always wondered how to use the thatcher rake. Thank you for your great video
Great video. I'm gonna buy one tomorrow for my lawn. Can't wait to use it.
Very nice presentation. He would do well in television.
Fantastic video. Thank you!
thanks, I just get one and I used it and because my grass has runners it took a lot of the grass up. but I did some more and I think I had it and it seemed better but now I'll be dethatching like a pro now.
Fantastic video, very clear and thorough. Thank you!
Great job and explanation! Real down to earth! Nice kid!
Great simple video. I plan on buying one and wearing myself out this weekend while prepping for seed. Thanks for the tips on the adjustments.
Hi, I've only got a small lawn, not big enough to justify an electric scarifier, this looks ideal for my needs, my local B&Q store has one in stock, I'm on my way.
Great video, thanks.
What time of year are you supposed to dethatch the lawn, and how often should it be done? Thanks!

Does it matter whether the grass is wet or dry when doing this? Thanks.
I
Kinda therapeutic task, good arm workout. Sure helps with pesky creeping Charlie weeds.
Is it good dethatch it during winter or leave it as it is?
Just did my backyard, about 2000sqft. Will be renting a machine for my front.
I was standing in line at home depot after 500sqft
You did better than me lol. I had at it for 30 minutes and that was enough. Just purchased an electric thatcher online.
Dude! never give up renting.
@@Komiopa I am a cheap bastard
Will this cut up my bermuda grass? My lawn is bermuda and I'd like to keep it. Does lawn need to be dry or wet when doing this? And how often should we dethatch?
Brilliant vid, exactly what i was looking for !
Really helpful tips, thanks so much. God bless
I knew there would be a youtube video for this! Thanks so much. Nicely explained and visualized.
Ryan your the goat
Good informative video
Well done! This guy is good!
I have around 80sq ft. The UK has small gardens however I found a regular rake does the job just as good
what angle should i be dethatching at? The rake cam in the full aggressive angle.
Excellently Done!
Any thoughts on dethatching lawnmower blades? Trying to weigh out a power option without buying a new machine.
Can we do this anytime when grass is growing?
How much pressure do we use when using these? A lot of not much? I used mine today and ripped out some grass, although it was arguably bad grass anyway.
Thank you!!!!! I am so glad for your explanation!!!!
The thatch rake is great to take care of Creeping Charlies or other ground ivies
Good to know!
I wouldn't say it's good for that, but it's a necessary step to exposing the vines. Creeping Charlies seem to be one of these easiest vine plant to get rid of but they sprawl fast.
Great video just got the rack it was pulling to much stuff up the adjustment helped.
I should’ve watched this before trying it for the first time. First, I didn’t adjust the rake and second I definitely tried to muscle it. I’m hurting lol

good demonstration thanks for sharing.
I used a standard fan rake and it did a good job, but good lord it took a while.
would you recommend using this on a st aug lawn? im just a bit scared of ripping up the stolons but at the same time i know theres quite a bit of thatch on my lawn
It would probably do some damage to St. Aug - how much as I don't know exactly as I've never worked with that lawn type directly
I just buyed the same tool two days ago but no idea to use it. So Thank you for posting this! BTW I subbed to you too. My yard is pretty and won Yard of Month on May but I don't know everything about my yard. Now you are my new teacher...
Its "I just bought". Grammar is a skill and a skill well worth investing time into.
Thanks for the help!
This kind off tool is good to rake the Moss too ?
Great tips
Hoping to remove Creeping Charlie after soaking rain - looks like it will work w/thatching rake.
Would this rake be useful in removing thick crabgrass?
Hi, at 2:50 you started raking and then sped the camera to show the after picture you're done. How long did you rake back and forth just that spot that you speed?

The $100 greenworks electric dethatcher from Amazon works great! It truly is a back saver. Then like you said, pick up the thatch with the lawnmower.
Yes, but this type of rake gives you a lot more ability to fine tune your approach than the power rake. Use on the whole yard depends on how much time you have for it, the condition and size of your yard, and your overall general health. What side of the rake do i use? Theres two different side one is steight one has slight curve to it. 😅
Thanks. I had no idea how to use it
Damn, I had an old rake like that from my Grandfather. Didn’t know what it was and got rid of it!
I have this rake. The key is to push and pull the rake like you're vacuuming a carpet. It 'glides' along the ground.
Great video! Very helpful.
As always, a very simple and informative video. Thanks!
it's fun watching you work but my back would be dead for a week. I just rent a dethatcher and aerator and done in an hour.
Do you recommend detaching while grass is wet?
Thank you, I have a rake and I didn't know that it could be adjusted. I think once I adjust it, It will be easier to thatch. When is the best season to thatch?
Such a proper unpacking, when I got mine I just ripped it off.
Thank you for sharing your video,Ryan👍🏼✌🏼
Super helpful. Just got one of these at Lowe's. Planning up clean up before Fall reseeding.
I think it would be helpful if you could elaborate on how to determine which thatching tine angle is the best for what situation.
I'm in the same boat. Picked mine up yesterday and will be seeding next week.
That is the thickest lawn I've ever seen. THICK
What color paints are on your shed that's what I would like to know. Also thanks for showing the how-to.
Hi Ryan - when I use the thatch rake (first time ever on my lawn), should it be hard in some areas to pull the thatch out? I am pulling up very little green grass, but some areas are so full of thatch I am afraid I may damage the lawn if I go at it too hard.
It will definitely be a workout if it hasn't been done before
