Well you did it again, Mike. What a great video!!! Your crafting skills are over the top. Thank you for allowing us into your workshop and following your wonderful journey into the endless possibilities in drum creativity.
Inspiring, Mike! I love it. I have quite a few drums and shells in need of some TLC. I've been experimenting/practicing routing my own edges and I'm thinking it may be time to repurpose some of those shells to make something of my own!
Would love to see that! I don’t want to minimize the importance or skill of cutting edges, but once you get it down it’s a very quick/simple process. Just takes practice on some donor shells.
Following this kit from the beginning. What a journey! Love the glossy blue finishes with natural wooden hoop. Accessibility wise, it seems my only option for a similarly kit setup is Yamaha SC Hip which you've reviewed long ago. Thank you.
Enjoy your DIY drummer content, basses look and sound nice. I second hand obtained a Side Kick Drums (local to St. Louis) Skinny Bass 6x22 from a guitarist which I think got some popularity during the Stomp-Clap-Yeah Mumford and Son days. I made shallow 12" and 16" concert/nesting toms (stand mounted) from the other half of shells used for a suitcase set project. Having a kit that it suited to a gig really helps with getting to the right mental space and vibe.
Great video as always, Mike! After following you, Reverie Drums and Nordic Shells for a while, and seeing this awesome set of videos for your small kit and other small builds like the concert toms, I'm really interested in doing something like this myself. I've had an idea to do 12x7, 14x10 (or 14x11) and 18x12, matching the finish of the custom snare I built about 6 years back. The one thing that's getting me caught up for this is figuring out measuring holes for the lug layout- not just the circumference around the drums, but the depth of the holes from the bearing edge, and then figuring out what size lugs to use. How do you figure out what size lugs to use and how deep down to drill for the lugs? Of course it may be a bit different with double sided lugs vs single sided lugs, which I'm still figuring out as well, how do you recommend approaching this part?
This will get you started with layout stuff. As for depth stuff, it's a lot simpler for measuring, all depends on what lugs you buy and where you want them placed and buying appropriate length tension rods. www.drummaker.net/partsguide/FMPro?-token=3760313162&-DB=DM_Products&-LAY=CGI&-format=showcase-layout-mats.htm&-error=advanced-search.htm&-view
Great video! Very useful for me as i have a 20" kick thats water damaged and ive been thinking about cutting it down from 14 to 12" to remove a large part of the damage, so good to know 11" deep is a good option too
@malonedrum well im always using two bassdrums so i wont have a choice when i start giging eventually, i might even put a third bassdrum on my kit for slower parts on some songs
I think this is the same kit you used in your "5 Days In The Studio" video, which sounded absolutely fantastic on tape. To me, that's the litmus test: if it can hold up in the studio, it can pretty much hold its own anywhere. It's great that you've built gear you can trust to deliver what you require from it. Kudos!
Does anyone know watching this channel, if lacquering the inside of the shell of the drum makes it sound better? For those drums with a raw sanded inside shell would it be beneficial sound wise to lacquer the inside of the drum? Can't find videos on this. Ty so much
Looks and sounds great! Was hoping to see you playing both 18" and 20" - in a double kick setup! Probably not your style, but just for fun and to be able to compare them - quick A/B and then "BRRRR" double kick :D
Toms sound great but 20" kick is too controlled for my taste and lacks punch... did you try it maybe with smaller front hole and mic on the front head instead?
I mean, if I didn’t like how it sounded, I could easily swap the heads/tuning to dial it in more, but I like the sound. Of course you’re welcome to your tastes and I hope you find it on your drum!
@@malonedrum I’m getting ready to build a 12” natural tom and appreciate the response. My 10” custom tom was nitro cellulose and I wish I had ordered the 12” long ago. Thanks for the cool videos.

Wow! Not only are you an accomplished drummer, but you're a handy woodwork craftsman! Great video.
Thanks!
Love the colors Mike The blue and wood grain, look awesome together.
Its definitely a pretty look.
Time to drop you a few. Didn't realize there was a super thanks until now. You're my Disney+ ;-)
Extremely kind of you! Means a lot.

Love the way the kits looks and sounds. Good one mike!
Right on!
Love your videos. It's both entertaining and informative to watch.
Thank you!
I think it is a fabulous small kit. Love the idea of the 3 different size bass drums. The look fabulous.
I only have two now, but it’s nice to be able to piece things together for different gigs.

@@malonedrum Yeah, I've been practicing on some uber cheap, orphan shells and have been pleasantly surprised how nice the finished edges are.

Love the wood hoops, puts me in mind of Ayotte drums. Awesome job as always Mike
Love those old Ayotte drums!
I love the kit, Mike. I've been following Reverie for a while and lusting after their smaller kits.
Same here! I love their stuff, and it's been a huge inspiration on my designs for the drums I've put together myself.

Any size is an option, good, up to the player!
I like it a lot, Mike! I’ve always been a fan of 20” kicks
The most versatile size in my opinion!
Id use the 18“ as a remote bassdrum for some more variation in sounds

It would make the surface harder, and my guess would be maybe reflect sound more, but I really don't think it'll make it sound better.

Thank you so much. Yeah, that makes sense.
Beautiful
Thank you

Somehow I missed the new drum diameter. It seems to always be referred to as Bigger or Larger. And what is the new drum shell thickness?
It’s 20” diameter x 11” depth. Sorry! 6 ply thickness.
Awesome! The same size as my old Slingerland. Thanks!@@malonedrum
Please build matching 8 and 10" toms!
I doubt I’ll get there. I think I’d be most likely to build a whole new kit.
Sounds good!

Do you put these drums in cases or take them out on the road raw?
