- This is a re-edit of a video I did shortly after the first MAVEN Filters Kickstarter but never released. While that Kickstarter is over, the filters I talk about here - CPL and ND filters are available on their website (links below). I purchased these filters with my own money and they were not provided to me by MAVEN.
I do an in-the-field review of the MAVEN Filters for landscape photographers, talking about the benefits of magnetic filters, what features MAVEN has in their filter line, and the basics of using magnetic filters.
I also perform two field tests that people frequently ask me about - an in-the-field color accuracy test of the CPL and ND filters. And a vignetting test of stacking two filters. These results are reviewed back in the office more closely.

I had the original Kase magnetic filters and the weakness of the magnets became a problem over time. So much so that I didn't trust them. So I invested in the Maven filters. They have been great except when taking a lens hood off of a Sony lens. It is very "finicky" to try to do that with out the magnetic filter coming loose as the lens cap comes off and then the filter can drop on the ground. Especially when using gloves. Kase has come out with their "Revolution" magnetic filters. I also have those. The copied a lot of the features that Maven introduced. Color coding in particular. And the magnets are strong than the original Kase but I haven't found them to be better than the Maven. What Kate does offer is a magnetic mounting ring that is very slim and can actually screw into the inside of the lens. This makes vignetting less of a problem and it works better with lens caps. But, that slimmer, "internal" mounting ring is not as magnetically strong. So after playing around with both I have continued to use the Maven filters. I just need to be careful when using a lens hood.
I occasionally pop a filter or lens cap off when taking a lens in or out of the camera bag (I keep my lens in there pretty snug though) - but I’ve had that happen with Kase Wolverines, Revolutions, and the MAVENs. The convenience of the magnetic though makes it worth it for me.
MAVEN is working on a new ring that helps with vignetting as well. They’ve mentioned it in their 2nd Kickstarter. They have a Low Rider ring in that Kickstarter, but from the sounds of it they are still refining it, so maybe a v2 of it in the future. (They also have a Dark CPL in their 2nd Kickstarter that combines a CPL with an ND that helped significantly with vignetting, even with the standard magnetic adapter.

Have you heard anything about magnetic systems, not having strong enough magnets. Great video!
I have heard of those issues with some magnet systems, specifically some earlier ones. i.e. Kase had an issue with their early Wolverine filters, but I think they must have made some changes, as the Kase Wolverines I used did pretty good. My MAVEN's do well too.
In my experience, I can typically knock any brand filter off when taking a lens in and out of the camera bag, I keep my lenses and camera body pretty snug in there, so the pressure of removing it from the camera bag and dislodge a filter. But once the lens is out of the bag, I have no issue with filters staying on securely. It is only when moving things in or out of the camera bag.

Kase Vs Maven you say but the issues is not about if Kase is better than maven or Maven is better. It’s all about who is listening to the photographer/ filmmaker when it really comes to the feedback. Maven filters also stands out because they have a design for all their filters for the disability of the blind photographer need. No filters on the market has this design. Yes, I’m in favorite of the Maven Filters because my filters can help someone else in the process, therefore I want the versatility of a filter.
MAVEN definitely listens and supports photographers more actively from what I have seen! And I appreciate their innovative designs and attention to the details in their products. I've still been using my MAVEN filters regularly!
Good review and great location, Jeffrey! What is that on your lens, @ 08:30? Could be a reflection, or it looks like a piece of fabric, or something? Just curious?
Yeah, vignetting is always going to be an issue, either with or without filters on ultra wide lenses. It is hard to find a good screw on filter that is thin enough to prevent this. I have been curious and have been looking into these type of filter systems, mainly non magnetic, but this system looks so slick. Your use of it and how it was presented in this video clearly demonstrated their advantage. Stay safe and Happy Shooting! 👍🤝

As for that thing on the lens, it is definitely a reflection, but I’ve watched, rewatched, looked at the original video and I have no idea what it is a reflection of! I’ve tried to think what might have been on my video camera tripod, but nothing red that I can think of! And I was standing in a pretty open spot during this recording, so not like I had some tree or other object super close to me, and I was there early enough before many other people arrived. Crazy!
Yeah - a bit of a trade off going with filter sizes fit for the wide-angle instead of stepping up. I prefer not to have the bulk, so I live with a bit of vignetting - I don’t shoot at 14mm *that* often that it is an issue.
I’m a huge fan of magnetic filters. They just make swapping filters, stacking filters, all so easy. I feel like it makes me more efficient in the field.

Why not use a larger filter size to eliminate the vignette? Would a 95 mm filter size eliminate vignetting using an 82 mm lens or would I be better off going to a 105 mm diameter?
Using a larger filter size is the recommended way filter manufacturers recommend going to avoid any vignetting. Usually, just the next filter size up will be all you need, so bumping up to a 95mm filter for an 82mm lens filter size should be fine.
For me, I always check for vignetting because I know people are curious, but it really isn't a huge issue for me, I don't shoot at the full 14mm (i.e. on my 14-30mm lens) very often. I prefer my filters to be no bigger than they have to be because of that just to keep size in the pack down and keep the step-up rings on my lenses a little smaller for packability.
But for photographers that want no vignetting, the one filter size larger is the better approach.
Oh - and MAVEN did release DarkCPL filters with their most recent Kickstarter - those combine an ND filter with a CPL filter reducing the need to stack two filters and then reduces the vignetting impact. I did a video on those filters as well, with a sample I did at 14mm focal length.

Very informative! Will the Maven adapter interfere with a lens hood?
I have the filter set and they interfere when using the step-up rings (at least for my lenses, 77 -> 82mm). On my "native" 82mm I have no issues using my lens hood!
Thanks @LongSpear ! And I agree with him, if you are just using the magnetic adapter, not step-up rings then the hood should still fit on. But if you are using a step-up ring on the lens the lens hood does not fit on. I do believe MAVEN is working on a magnetic lens hood for situations you might want to use one. I don’t know specifics on it.
How do the Maven filters compare to the Kase filters? I made the switch to Maven after having problems with the Kase filters falling off, have noticed Maven filters have stronger magnets than the Kase filters. Have you noticed any difference in your use of the 2 brands?
The MAVEN magnets have been strong for me. To be fair, my Kase filter magnets never really caused me much trouble either though. The only time I knock a filter or lens cap off is sometimes when I am taking a lens in or out of my camera bag, but I keep my dividers pretty snug which contributes to that. And that happens with both Kase and MAVEN.
I like the color coding more on the MAVEN filters, it is more visible to me. The ND color accuracy of the MAVENs does seem to be very, very good. I was quite pleased based on the test in the video.

Kase vs Maven? Are you going to do a review?
I do have plans to do an in-the-field color accuracy test between Kase Wolverine, Kase Revolution, and the MAVEN CPL and ND Filters.
Once I get some more time in with the MAVEN filters, I will likely do a ‘which filter system is my favorite and why?’ video as well, that one is likely a little further out.

Thanks for your patience! First, it seems I have misplaced my inlaid adapter ring... :(
But, a MAVEN filter will attach to a normal Kase Magnetic Adapter ring, that seemed fine.
A Revolution filter will stack on top of a MAVEN filter - *But* a MAVEN filter sits just a little misaligned when stacked on a Revolution filter. It is very slight, the magenetic attachment is still there, just sits a little misaligned.
This was all just in office trying the different combinations - so I did not test for any vignetting concerns or anything.

@@JeffreyTadlockPhotography This helps a great deal! Thank you for doing this. Sounds like I can use my Kase magnetic rings, and as long as I start my stack with a Maven, I can then stack Kase Revos. Your testing sounds a lot like how the Wolverines interact with the Revolutions. This is really good news and thank you again for testing for me (us).
