My old Captains brother took his 42 foot Bruno to George's Banks(George's Banks is 300 miles offshore) that's a place for 70 foot and up, he got caught in storm on way home and a wave blew out 2 windows in the boat.. 42 ft that far out is frickin nutso crazy..

I never ever would go on a cruise , a ship with I do not know how many floors. I have sailed 50 years and more the ATLANTIC ( IRISH SEA, PENTLAND FIRTH, THE CHANNEL ETC), gailforce 10 was the highest. I am still alive , but nowadays I would leave the ship and wait for good weather.
The level of ignorance expressed in so many comments is comical! While ships do have very sofisticated equipment informing them of the weather on board. Storms often increase in intensity, quickly and without much warning. What makes situations like this 100% unavoidable, no matter how hard that captain struggles to avoid it. Consider a ship out at sea, destination from point A to point B. A storm shows up out of no where as they often do. Most are small posing minimal inconvenience. However, there are those storms that come together quickly, their intensity climbing by the minute. Rarely if ever are those storms small! An intense storm generating those 50' waves can be 200 miles wide! How fast can large ships move? Especially during a storm when to diminish impact they must slow down. Ships must be directed into the waves. Broad side waves can flip the ship! When those storms hit, the captain has no choice but to slow way down and turn that ship facing the waves and wind. Ideally the storm will pass within an hour or two. The alternative would be for the ship to make a hard left or right at the sight of every storm cloud. A 5 day cruise could turn into a 8 day cruise as the ship navigates through the minefields of thunder clouds out at sea The cost of cruises would triple, the money needed to cover fuel and food during the detours. At it stands now, ship hits a hard storm. Slows down, face the wind, until storm passes, never traveling far from the planned straight route.
