- Can AI have a poker face? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-hosts Gary O’Reilly and Chuck Nice discuss poker and playing against...the machines. Joining them are former poker player and science communicator Liv Boeree and artificial intelligence expert Matt Ginsberg.
Is there a strategy behind a poker face? We break down strategy, game theory, and probability in poker. What is state space complexity? What does it have to do with AI? Learn about Nash Equilibrium and how it is used in games such as poker. How long would it take to become a perfect poker player? How have styles of game play changed over the years? Is playing online poker different than in person? How about playing against a computer? Find out about statistics, artificial intelligence, and Liv’s work in effective altruism.
Continuing with Matt, we go over his champion crossword-solving AI, Dr. Fill, and break down how it plays. We continue with the Nash Equilibrium and ask: can a computer bluff? Is using AI considered cheating? How do you enforce the use of computers in a game with breaks? Should competitions even allow computers to play? Do casinos have AI programs to tell if you are cheating?
Discover the future of AI in competition. What prevents people from using AI to win? Could it be used by casinos to catch cheaters? We philosophize on whether people care if humans win these competitions and what it would be like to have a chip in your brain. Does AI have the capacity to guess? All that, plus, find out what term fooled Dr. Fill’s vocabulary!

I am still waiting for this: I am your host Neil De grass Tyson you personal astrophysicist and I have Chuck Nice your personal Commedian.
I'm pretty sure Chuck addressed this in a previous (obvs) episode. Something about how it was great that NDT was everybody's *personal* astrophysicist, but that Chuck has bills or something, lol, and can't be everybody's personal comedian.
@@msshannonigans lol Oh I gotta check that out
He already did. I think you may have slipped into a parallel reality when it happened. 😆
Now I see why he isn’t funny.... he’s a “Commedian”

Famous last words, "I just taught AI to lie."
The end all way to avoid those being the "last words"... simply do not input any more data into the AI system.
Or simply add an extra 1 or 0 that should not be there.
Just as squeezing on a person's throat, the system becomes starved for input, begins to error, and eventually seizes, completely unable to correct the software conflict, then basically dies to borrow a term from biology.
ALL AI, regardless of cost or creator, demands human intervention or the systems crash.
It's a reality few either learn, or deny outright due to a misunderstanding of the very technology.
@@theduder2617 Not true, one of the first things any proper general AI would do is to stop any other agent, especially human, from changing, stopping or shutting it down. Search for "The stop button problem" even here on UA-cam. You'll have a blast.
@@theduder2617 The AI will recognize that erroneous 1 and 0 you added, and delete it by itself. You are underestimating the capability of future AI and technology.
@@jsmithers.
You are overestimating the technology. Quite a bit to be honest.
I am certain that you are unaware that AI can in fact be prevented from ever doing all sorts of things.
It's all in the coding. And yes, code can be altered without AI being able to correct.
That is the difference between actually studying the technology and believing something that "feels right".
I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey, if you stay, I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home
Wow! what a great episode. So glad you had Liv Boeree on. Always been a big fan of hers
Mr Tyson could you do a video explaining "Olbers' Paradox"?
My heavens, I love so much when I get to see Chuck correct Neil.
He really is a smart dude.
thanks, Neil...you are such a helpful science educator!
Olivia is absolutely awesome.
"It's ALL Google" - Chuck winning with *style* there 👏😂😂

Lets talk about the role AI plays in machine learning and automation technology and how that ties to terms like "universal income" 15-20 years from today, Moore's law indicates we will be in a very different world with many jobs being replaced with automated technology and in a world likely to lean toward universal income as a fix are we being realistic about the world our children will live in?. PS: Do we remember the political and social environment the last time, someone had the nerve to utter the phrase "learn to code" ?!
Liv so beautiful :]
Symmetry can really mess with state space, for instance in Tic Tac Toe, there are not 9 opening moves but 3 (corner, side, centre), since you can spin the board or mirror it.
Spinning or mirroring are other states themselves, aren't they?
Too bad the panel doesn't know a thing about chess and only base their discussions on a pop culture tv series desscribing like 60s or 70s. Nobody adjourns games anymore - it's a sit and go, no breaks for lunch etc. you can go to the toilet but if anyone discovers any electronic device on you, you're done. Moreover, they don't even discover anything but you play much above the level at which you are, this already raises a lot of suspicion and you are much more likely to get caught eventually.
Some people here think AI source code just magically happens in a computer system without human intervention or creation 🤣🤯
That's how AI reproduces... 41:30 Because they are aliens.
Exactly. They do not understand that software demands human input or there is no software to speak of.
Nor do they understand how easily and without effort AI can be fooled and/or rendered non-functional simply by not providing input.
I've told them to leave an AI system running with no human input whatsoever and watch how quickly it degrades.
There was even an old 80's movie which made fun of technology's need for human input. "Number 5 is alive" was the catch phrase.
@@theduder2617 Ummm...You're still early on in AI's lifespan bud....Computers themselves have only really been publicly available for 30ish years. In another 50 years, the ability of AI can be totally different...The way it WORKS can be totally different...Just because you think you understand how it works now in 2021 doesnt mean you know for sure what AI will be able to do in 2050....It will be able to repair itself, in coding and other facets. You do not have 100% knowledge on how things can possibly go in 50 years from now. So pipe down.
So , when AI becomes clever enough to withhold or change information that it gives us , to improve its own position , how would we know ?
Why would you program it do that in the first place?
@@ddpwe5269 .."AI becomes clever" insinuates that it's beyond it's initial programing . Programs are not clever , the people that write them are , but when AI writes its own code ...... and it's clever enough to poker face , how would you know ?
I'd say when people who ask that question or similar ones start disappearing...
@@ddpwe5269 There are always smart people who are more focused on what they can do than what they should do.
I remember first seeing Chuck on TruTV. It's amazing seeing how far he's come. He's (almost) an intellectual comedian now.
Was he on COPS?
@@twonumber22 Commentator on World's Dumbest Criminals
All comedians are intellectual though. Meaning to have that ability to be funny, and to be witty and clever, requires a lot of quick thinking brain activity and sometimes deep thinking activity. Humor is an area or subset of intelligence. Thus all comedians are technically smart people in some facet and thus intellectual.

Great episode! The Nash equilibrium / game theory optimal play that Liv was telling us about reminded me of that game played by Data and Kolrami: strategema. When Data realised he could tire Kolrami out by playing game theory optimal rather than trying to win.
Plz make a video on Quantum Computing!!
Can we have Gary more often?!!
And Neil actually had time to watch The Queen’s Gambit.
And I’m here think I don’t have enough time. 😂
@ThatOneDood yes It's same as watching 7 startalk videos 😲
Liv is gorgeous!
Great episode guys! I just saw that alpha go documentary about deep mind.. Really makes you think about A. I. these days! It was crazy.. I don’t know that much about go but I’d really like to play Neil in a game of chess!!
Gary's chair absolutely has leather wrist straps attached to the arms....just sayin'
I don’t play games; I just win without playing 🤷🏽♀️🤓✋🏻
Neil, he or she politely corrected you. What you were talking about was a quantified X Factor and what Chuck was talking about is commonly known as The X Factor as in the unknown factor...
Maybe it's just because I'm watching you more often however I'm seeing the lacking in your overall wisdom more and more.
And it's things that you should be smart enough to not f*** up. You know like correcting someone else while also being wrong at the same time.
Or claiming that Pluto is not a planet and instead it's something completely different a dwarf planet... That's right add a word to planet which is a descriptive word and somehow that means it's not a f****** planet because we live in a fantasy land apparently...
Right at the beginning I see a whole lovely person. Liv. Smart. Clued on. Pretty and pretty with a smile. Educated. Actually got some decent IQ and a professional in a number of ways. Communication. Linguistically and body language form. I dont know how to say all this. But I like her and I'm respectable enough to say she is a lovely and successful classy woman. My respect can't be expressed here. And it's a dogs breakfast my attempt here.

Pause we need a forensic test kit. All in metric measurements. Ok what color was the center an so on math rocks POKER FACE!
It's amazing how fluent is she to answer the attack of questions but the info Matt provides is pretty amazing

I mean it is utilitarian and objectively correct to use the most effective charities... but I donate my money to causes I personally care about. Example, the Make a Wish Foundation saves less lives than St. Jude's but I may donate to Make A Wish. Example, Alzheimer's research only benefits our oldest people who no longer contribute more to the economy. So is it better to focus on childcare and ignore Alzheimer's charities completely? Because we would net more lives and number of years per life saved.
Of course we have perfect synthetic random number generators. Quantum random number generators are perfect.

This make me think of the Star Trek TNG episode were Data was playing a chess like game against a master and kept losing. He then switched his game play up to just tie the other player. The other player just gives up out of frustration due to the length of the game.
The game was Strategema.
If you have set rules and only do what the rules say you should do within what is allowed in the game then you will lose some sure and even win some although much like flipping a coin or rolling a die, it will avrage out over 10 trillion games.
Wow, I've seen Liv play on TV before a while back, I knew she was smart but I never knew she was a physicist/astrophysicist.
007 refers to Queen Elizabeth's Alchemist John Dee - her secret agent...
Whenever you mention these calculations you always need to mention that go has several levels higher than chess I mean it's essentially the same kind of difference between go and chess as it is between chess and tic-tac-toe.
Thanks!
GTO is good when your playing the very top players, explorative play is the best against players at your local casino.
So glad this is more about AI and mathematics, but it's also making me miss playing poker and board game nights with friends
Soon ?
I improved my Algorithm “Singularity” by 100x in 3 Days
I just saw the episode of TNG where Data finally learned poker.
You are the best person ever Neil !! You are one of my favorite people
If you do account for probability in your daily life then you should keep in mind that the most unlikely thing is for nothing unlikely to happen at all.

I truly enjoyed this... just saying and not bluffing...
Let me know when you make an AI that can beat a human in a game of magic, or even just play one.

@07:54 Q: How do you know that Neil deGrasse Tyson went to Princeton? A: _Don't worry, he'll tell you_ . Liv Boeree: "Neil, when you were at school... *excuse me... **_PRINCETON_** ...* "

Hi Neil, I am from India and watching ur show regularly and like it very much. I have 2 questions for you, whose answers I am not getting. Request you to please answer. 1. When star like sun or bigger than it explodes then it's all fusion energy is consumed. Then how can stars is getting born from its remnants? Because no fusion is left in remnant(Nebulae).
2. How can stars can be born out explosion of single star, I mean from where they get matter to form stars from single star?
When I registered as a Republican voted:
2020 in advance at my home address on 1st Bay Street, -1035
I was told in response to registration application on line...
I received a voting location to mail in the enclosed ballot received. I also received a receipt by memo, not a registration card (used as a form of ID alternative
Name, address, citizenship status and state issued.
I was leaving on my trip but we were able to vote in person at the city Circuit Court before we left. I brought 2 of my children (who lived right across the street from my kitchen window) with me to learn how to vote their voice on paper. Both were born in the country, natural born citizens and were over 18 years old. Both were denied (that day) and given further instructions to follow up.
I brought my ballot as instructed and gave it to the lady sitting at the table who handed me a different registration form to check before I was led to the computer to vote again
After I voted, my form was scanned into another machine. I was given a nod, a sticker, and a folder with pen to throw away. (They weren't even considered worth keeping)
But at the beginning of the line, my original voting ballot was looked at, reviewed by the lady who gave me another form to register and destroyed my 1st vote by ripping it up in front of me.
If these processes aren't evidence of election meddling, by 3rd parties of interest AND organized volunteers to assist
I clearly cannot determine the fate of our nation before I left town to SAVE it.
So,
I destroyed my sticker.
That's just advertising
And I would do it again.
Even under pressure.
Even with other plans.
Even with someone elses kids
But, Im only ONE vote
And my 1st time voting
Was historic
If two copies of the world's smartest AI play against each other and one knows the opponent is a copy of itself could it come up with a winning strategy even if it is preforming random moves at key times or in general?
Kinda like a child can beat. Grand master if they don't go for the easy opening win/if the kid accidentally moves the right peaces.
Comedy.❤️
AI just when you can end capitalism..... the circles the elite go...
Want to always win at rock, paper, scissors? Then watch the opponent's hand as it raises from the second strike of the palm.
Most people plan their move on the second impact and their brain begins the transfer of hand position at that time.
When not informing someone of the above, I maintain a 96% win streak in rock, paper, scissors.
Important note: Texas holdem players have been harder to beat. They tend to hide rather well I have noticed.

Hi Neil, I have a question: Is it possible for a planet to form around a black hole? And if so, would it be possible for that planet to have life?
It is weird to me to consider it the "death of the human mind" for humans to use the results of analyzing a problem with a computer in playing poker, but not to treat it similarly when we use computers to analyze and understand physics and other scientific problems..
I know this is probably going to trigger some people but if math and science are soooo racist then how fo you explain this wonderful gentleman and his whole carreer?

So how about a game like Magic the Gathering?
