Thanks to years of supply side/trickle down economics and free trade agreements, this is the end result. Toledo is not alone in this malaise. Most older northern US cities and smaller towns are all in the exact same boat. The problem with all these rust belt locales is that they just keep doing the same damned things over and over again plus re-electing the same entrenched career politicians over and over again expecting different and more positive results.
Left Toledo in '86' at the beginning of its decline. It sure has gone down. When I think about returning after all these years and then I see it's deterioration I can't do it!
Sometimes you just have to take a chance on the old hometown by moving back and reestablishing yourself. Especially if you are in a locale that is getting very expensive and unlivable. I did back in mid 2001 when I got fed up with high rents, low wages, and overburdened infrastructure of Austin Texas. I packed up my belongings moved out of my expensive one bedroom apartment and moved back to Buffalo New York.
