I would say I wouldn’t have a problem with taking another DT with our first Pick. After drafting Mazi, and the way his first year ended, I’m not sure if we have a DT who can shutdown the run.
As a casual who ignores highlights and PFF, I'm just not seeing it on film for this player. Good hands, eyes, leverage, quick too. Maybe I watched too much Carter film. Hope it works out for Seattle better than passing on Carter did. His sack @2:00 was the QB bumping into 2 of his linemen and falling down. Lots of film out where he gets moved vs 1 man too.
He's not big enough to be a NT in a 3-4, and he's not long enough to be a 5tech. He'd make a great under tackle/ 3tech in Minnesota's old defense, but KOC is obsessed with running a 3-4 because "it was hard to play against" for him. Now he has Flores who's remaking the defense into a blitzing 3-4. Murphy seems like more of a situational pass rusher in that scheme.
I WANT to love Murphy, but unless he's using that, "knee-down" technique against the run, he's getting washed in the run game. This guy is not the second coming of Casey Hampton. He's, unfortunately, not that stout. Unless he can become a true nose tackle, he's going to have to be a 3tech or a situational pass rusher in a 3-4 scheme. Only certain playoff contenders can afford to a "situational pass rusher if the FIRST round. I need more C.Hampton/M.Pierce, and less K.Klancey/ Grady Garret in Murphy's game to make him the anchor of a 3-4 defense. As it stands, a 4-3 team with a powerful stud NT will absolutely LOVE Murphy.
Anybody comparing this guy to Donald needs to go back and watch Donald play. Donald was obviously the best player on the field every time you saw him. This guy is just decent
