Joe Alt vs. Troy Fautanu: let's analyze who is better. The NFL has struggled to develop quality offensive lineman in the last decade, which is why it is crucial for teams to nail their first round offensive lineman evaluation in the 2024 NFL draft. There are some incredible prospects projected to go near the top of the first round, but every prospect has strengths and weaknesses that need to be analyzed. Should teams take Notre Dame’s Joe Alt? Or University of Washington’s Troy Fautanu? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze Notre Dame’s Left Tackle Joe Alt and University of Washington’s Left Tackle Troy Fautanu as they prepare for the 2024 NFL draft.

I like Alt a lot, I think his frame/length makes him a very intriguing prospect. He’s built to handle power & has the length to push speed rushers off their path to the QB. He can be coached into an elite OT in the NFL with the physical tools he has. I think that’s why he’s so high on boards.
My only knock on him that you already mentioned is he can lean too much. I also noticed he’s a top heavy guy which can be a hard habit to kick. But with the right coaching he can adjust.

That was my only knock on Fautanu. It was his ability to handle power rushers. It’s pretty clear from his film & combine he has the footwork to play tackle. He has tackle length too but I still believe he’s better off moving inside & putting on another 10-15 lbs to play guard. He’d be elite on the inside with his agility & scrappy nature.

If you wish you could spend 3 min on WAS and then add several other teams. IMO If WAS drafts a QB at 2 it is pointless since the QB will be running for his life just like Howell last year. Do we need TWO from Alt, Fashanu, Fautanu, Latham, Fuaga?

Fuaga, Fashanu, and Fautanu all look like quality ready to plug and play OTs in the NFL. Also Jackson Powers-Johnson in the 20-25 range looks like a nice upper level center add for somebody. I’m hoping Bears will trade down from 9 if Odunze and Fashanu are gone and get a LV or New Orleans 14-16 and 44-46 for their 9 and 75. I’d take Fautanu and a Keon Coleman or Bralen Trice at 44 though both may be off the board by then.

Was hoping you were gonna touch on some more players in the class, Alex.
Alt’s a good player. I think you’re overselling the pop in the run game a bit. He’s good there. He’s effective. But he’s not gonna be mistaken for a Fuaga or Latham in that department, just chucking dudes out the club on a consistent basis. You talked a little about some of his tendency to overextend but I don’t think you really delved into why it happens as often as it does. The way Alt is built, with that high waist and those long legs, make it difficult for him to really bend and sit down in the way you see a more flexible lineman like a Latham or a Fautanu do. His build and some of his lower body tightness forces him into a less than ideal choice of either playing too high or overextending. Alt’s has made the choice to lean more on the side of overextending but can often get away with it in college because of the natural agility, body control and felicity with his hands. I think in the league it will be an issue that will give him more problems than it did in college. I still think he’s gonna be a good, effective pro, but I think there’s a good chance that it will limit his upside in a way that it wouldn’t if he were a bendier athlete.
Fautanu, I don’t think you really talked about the best thing about him, which is the special lateral movement skills he has. He’s the best, most fluid, purest mover in this O line class. One thing that does concern me is not so much the size but something else: his relatively flat ass. He just doesn’t have that ideal bubble that you want, which goes directly to his anchoring ability. I think he’s such a good athlete and so technically sound that he’ll be able to still be very effective in most instances, but when he does have trouble I think it will be because of trouble with his anchor.

And you always say that doesn't matter how big they are how strong they are if they don't have technique and foot work they're not gonna amount to anything because we're not gonna know how to beat big fast DE... Hey Alex, I just caught your show for the first time, if I can, ask a question off topic from 3 years ago , it's a video about Zach Wilson rise,, being a jet fan, idk I didn't like the way everyone destroyed Zach Wilson in 2023, Joe Douglas picked him for a reason, and watching your breakdown , why wouldn't you, the question is, coming from a professional Anilyst like yourself, besides the obvious, no QB in the NFL could've played with the injuries and different combos the OL had, Do you have a reason or not, about why Wilson couldn't run the jets offense in 2023? An athlete with that amount of talent and hype should get a second chance, in my eyes. ok, ty , if you have a minute to give me what you're thinking .

    • @michaelicious
      @michaelicious Місяць тому +1

Contrary to popular belief, the New York Jets made the right decision drafting Zach Wilson since there was no other way they could have proactively addressed their quarterback concerns. The common retort you’ll often hear from critics is they should have drafted Ja’Marr Chase or Micah Parsons. My counter argument to that is their value as positional players would have diminished if Sam Darnold kept playing the way he did. The bottom line is Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh were not interested in mortgaging their livelihoods on a quarterback they did not evaluate, draft or see play well.
In 2022 the New York Jets benched Zach Wilson for saying he did not let the defense down which was the wrong decision since they were 5 and 2. Critics will argue that quarterback was not the reason they won which quite frankly doesn’t matter. In the National Football League wins are measured by the scoreboard, not how clean the game was played or locker room likability points. If a team has a winning record they’re gonna continue starting the quarterback who contributes to that regardless of how he plays.
The second reason why benching Zach Wilson was the wrong decision was because it robbed him of the opportunity to reclaim his role as a leader. If you’re a head coach and you’re too much of a wuss to play your starting quarterback when the weight of the world is on his shoulders then you don’t deserve the job. If Zach Wilson rises to the challenge and keeps this team in the playoff mix, then it actually makes sense for the New York Jets to keep him into 2023 where they actually are justified in their hope of him developing behind Aaron Rodgers.

This should be Alt vs Fashanu. Fautanu is at best the 5th best tackle in the draft. Alt, Olu, Mims, and Latham are all better.

Hot take: Troy Fautanu won't transition very well to the NFL, too vulnerable to power rusher that currently dominate the NFL at the edge position

Fautanu was never in a top 5 ot for me or a top 3 iol. He legitimately cannot block anyone. Horrific in the run game and gets absolutely dusted by inside moves. Kinda suprised youd compare a high upside low floor guy to ot1 by miles

Joe Alt is too stiff, have a meh anchor compared to the other tackles in the 1st round and can't bend nearly as well. He'll get dominated by the top edge players in the NFL. I think he's a mid 1st round pick, not a top 10.

    • @t4d0W

Recent team building tactics has shown an elite receiver to go with a very strong QB can make up for a few weaknesses in the O-line. Besides GM Hortiz/Harbaugh have to hit on the interior O-linemen too which have been a weakness for the Chargers under Staley/Telesco's regime. Especially if OC Roman wants to run with Gus.
