I`ll never become tired telling how grateful to you I am! Huuuge thanks for putting so much effort, for being ”very specific”, for collecting all the information possible, while explaining a particular topic. I admire your passion, courage and involvement! I really do appreciate this kin of teaching. Even if the video is long, each part of the video is useful. He's not wasting our time because when he teaches us, he make sure that he imparted us a complete knowledge about the topic. He's not just reading a script, he's really illlustrating through his drawing which is very helpful in our Physiology classes.
I have subscribed recently and have watched dozens of these videos. Thank you thank you thank you Z, you have helped so many people! Got my t-shirt yesterday. Always looking for the next topic.. not to mention your lectures have helped me cruise through my classes so much. A true teacher is a gem.
I have thyroid disorder and just never quit making milk... drs acted like everything was normal and I was just super confused. This video was the best explanation of what I was experiencing not just your fine.
I can never thank you enough. After watching every video I'm like wow. How can he make it sound so easy and understandable. Thank you so much. Your videos are life savers. ❤️
Oh my gosh. Amazing. Thank you so much bud, especially clarifying estrogen’s effect on Prolactin. You have no idea how confused I was before. Now I see the light!!
Great video as always, thank you. Around minute 14 you say too much estrogen inhibits the action of prolactin (PRL) during pregnancy, but I believe it is progesterone during pregnancy that inhibits PRL's effects. Keep up the good work - you and your team are truly an inspiration.
Hi, I wish you made the distinction that estrogen and progesterone increase prolactin production, but they inhibit the effect of prolactin on the production of milk during pregnancy. Once the placenta is delivered, a drop in estrogen, progesterone, and dopamine, allow prolactin to stimulate lactation.
Sir you are too good! 😍 Much love and success to you in life! I am medical graduate and watching your videos makes me feel damn I should have watched this in UG days. 😆
The most common symptoms of high prolactin levels on men are : Low libido, erectile dysfunction, low dopamine, and not being able to achieve erections without touching yourself. At least that what i felt when i was on high prolactin level due to taking antidepressants for 2 years, had to take cabergoline to be back to normal again.
Awesome video! I have a question about the relationship among estradiol, prolactin, and dopamine. I understand that estrogen inhibits dopamine, which in turn leads to elevated prolactin. Why, then, is there so much research that shows that estrogen stimulates dopamine release? What is the mechanism of action? If estrogen stimulates dopamine, should it not inhibit prolactin? Yet, we know elevated estradiol leads to elevated prolactin, because estrogen inhibits dopamine. I can't seem to grasp how estradiol has both paradoxical effects: it inhibits dopamine to stimulate prolactin; yet studies show estradiol potentiates dopamine while simultaneously increasing prolactin. Any clarification is appreciated.
Estrogen has stimulating effects on prolactin secretion, independent of dopamine. In addition, while estrogen can increase dopamine, it also increases serotonin, which in turn lowers dopamine and increases prolactin. It's all rather complex but in practice, prolactin is actually a better marker for someone's estrogen levels than an actual estrogen blood test.
Maybe is a matter of estrogen level. Very high = prolactin release. Moderate = Dopamine release. I guess in males some estrogen is needed to release Dopamine because once I heard crashed estrogen makes prolactin spike up
Zach, dude, I've been leaving quite a few comments under a lot of your lecture. U don't feel like writing about it in depth at the moment but a 10x legal dosage overdose was deliberately administered to me late September 2007. It nearly killed me. Now I have a wide range of medical conditions-mainly seen in elderly people ( I'm 46) but my blood work done once I'd figured out what had happened to me I called on my uni biochemistry and pharmacology. As well as many other endorphin interference problems they caused were hyperprolactinemia. I was told normal Prolactin level for a male was one said 270, the other said 320 was maximum healthy for males. My level was 898, I was told that's the level of a breastfeeding mother. The alteration in mental state associated with this is to develop and display an unusual maternally protective aggression/ almost psychotic agitation and protectiveness and somewhat aggressive mannerism s. This, of course, is unusual for a male and open to misinterpretation by your average mental health professional. It's just a nasty extrapyramidal side effect, while one of the primary deliberate effects is to amplify all types of norepinephrine production and increasing reception of them while blocking all ~25 of the dopamines and all~15 types of serotonin. I was turned into one of the world's nastiest pasties. 46yo West Australia male Perth
When you talked about breastfeeding as being one of the ways that lead to prolactin release you said that it activates paraventricular nucleus to promote TRH production...Is it also ok to say that oxytocin by the paraventricular nucleus is the one that causes Milk Let down reflex?
Yes. My brother has very high Prolactin and it has destroyed his self esteem, high weight gain, loss of desire, and so on. I've found very little information for men but so much for woman. Id love to find a good source for men and what treatment works best
Is there such a thing as a dopamine deficiency & could it cause elevated levels of prolactin in a non pregnant/ breastfeeding female without triggering thyroid issues??
This question is pretty old, but in case this helps someone, I'll give the sliver of knowledge I have. SSRIs (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors) inhibit dopamine, which could result in an over-production of PRL and may then result in lack of menstrual cycle and milk secretion. Might be worth investigating.
As a bro science thing people on UA-cam say that there is. It's not so much of a deficiency I don't think. If you want to lower prolactin don't worry so much about increasing dopamine so much, lower the stress in your life by eating healthy foods and supplements. Stress and estrogen can increase prolactin
In short prolactin makes milk content. Also prolactin can make proteins which are aqua porins, ion channels, may make glut transporter because milk has water, calcium, lactose sugar, electrolytes, antibodies so forth
Hey you made a great video. The only thing that I missed was, I would like to know how prolactin works in male bodies. You only talked about milk production etc. which seems like Prolactin can be only found in female bodies. Can explain me, what prolaction does in male bodies or is in male bodies just a tiny bit of prolactin that has no effect?
Hello Doc. I was wandering as it pertains to prolactin in males,is it possible to have prolactinomas when the levels are in the normal but very high end of the range? To give a more complete picture of my question, the prolactin would be in the very high end of normal and testosterone would be in the very low end of normal. For example the free testosterone would be 300.00 nanograms per deciliter on a reference range chart of 205.00-781.00 and the prolactin would be 12.00 on a reference range chart of 2.64 -3.13 nanograms per milliliter.. These are roughly actual real numbers I've witnessed. Thanks for any info!

both progesterone and estrogen block the receptors to prevent PRL from acting on them
It's both

I heard that it is progesterone during pegnancy which inhibit action of prolactin. On alveolar cell not estrogen..
??????
I believe you are correct. Estrogen increases PRL production, but it is progesterone which inhibits its action during pregnancy.
@@fardadja please why does too much estrogen increases PRL production?
I thought estrogen decreases milk production which is why they give progestin only birth control to lactating mothers. Please explain.
When u have high progesterone does it lower prolactin ?

And the fact that estrogen inhibits prolactin [and dopamine] explains why women have mood swings, and possibly PPD
but as said in the video estrogen stimulates prolactin secretion...
