@@patrickbecker4473 Shostakovich, Dmitri (1981). Grigoryev, L.; Platek, Ya. (eds.). Dmitry Shostakovich: About Himself and his Times. Moscow: Progress Publishers. p. 316. Many excellent symphonic works have appeared recently. I should like to mention, for example, Sergei Prokofiev, Benjamin Britten, or the Bulgarian composer Lyubomir Pipkov.
This is very impressive from the start. 9:50 slow 2nd mov is this like EJ Moeran's 1st Sym ? at all... it doesn't sound much like RVW so perhaps not 17:27 frisky 3rd mov (now there is a bit of RVW) 19:24 probably "trio" of scherzo (cf Paul Creston ?) 21:50 might be start of Finale (better than Walton) 26:1
Pipkov dedicated this composition to the Republican fighters of the Spanish Civil War, which had ended the previous year in their defeat and post-war persecution. No pasaran! (I have an International Brigades replica flag hanging in my home office/hobby room)
You hooked me with the Leonora Carrington painting.
Thanks to D. Shostakovitch for mentioning this composer in one of his interviews. Loved the symphony.
Can you remember, where he mentions them?

This Symphony is lush and beautiful throughout ! Playful sections have great, colorful orchestration (e.g. starting at 21:50 - )! Loved this work!
