I am from China and being a South Park fan for more than 10 yrs, something might surprise you is that South Park has a huge and solid fan base in China even now. Band in China did change a lot of things, we knew something really bad would happen when we first saw the title of this episode. One hour after this episode came out, everything about South Park was wiped out of Chinese internet, and we were not allowed to post anything related to South Park on social media, or our account will be directly deleted. However we all love this episode, because nobody hates censorship more than us as we are living under censorship. South Park is the best.

I grew up watching South Park. In high school I remember you could watch every single episode on their website for free so I binged the entire catalog. Something I realized is that everyone is okay with South Park jokes until they’re about them. They make fun of everyone equally but people only realize it when they’re the ones being talked about. It’s an even playing field for everyone

Yes thank you. In prison I would hang a daily meme on the wall for 5 years straight, and they all stayed on the wall until it made fun of black people and then somebody would rip it down. So I hung up one saying "hey, I make fun of everyone up here, all colors and religions, even myself, so if you take these down you're being racist and racists people SUCK". agreed. It just speaks to the thing Matt and Trey spoke about with the whole Isaac Hayes situation. "How can you be offended by this one thing when we have done so much to offend everybody else?"Being offended is so subjective and arbitrary. And you literally cannot watch and like south park and be offended by some episodes and not other because that just makes you a huge hypocrite.

@@splinte111 I think it caused more criticism, because it was directed at the catholics believe in saints and wonders. Rather than a generalized attack on jesus. Like Christians are used to people making fun of jesus and jesus himself even said that they shouldn’t attack someone on his behalf and that people aren’t at fault for their own disbelief in him. But the Catholic Church values saints and mother marry, because they have suffered for their faith. An ideal Christians still to this day value. And they get defensive when someone is attacking martyrs, wich can’t defend themselves and often even died because they have been attacked for their beliefs.
In their head they defend fellow humans not god, who doesn’t need them defending people.

I think the main "issue" with South Park is that you have to watch an entire episode and actually think about it to understand the point they're trying to make. it's like blatant offensiveness stacked together to create a pretty nuanced take away. but watch any clip out of context or watch an episode without critical thinking skills and you come away thinking an entirely different message is being conveyed. I've met a lot of ppl who think South Park is siding with them when they're either against them or making an entirely separate point entirely.

My dad was an adult when the ginger episode aired. I was a child and watched it. Call it bad parenting if you want, but between the two of us, I was the one who understood the message was anti-hate while my dad decided ginger was a slur and always had been. We're both redheads. He used the episode as evidence of redhead hate despite neither of us ever being bullied for being redheads (quite the opposite, we both get regular compliments about how lovely our hair is). Foolish adults have often misinterpreted South Park because they don't understand what satire and sarcasm are.

I used to watch with my kids. Then we'd use whatever the topic to start a discussion. Kid friendly only applies to things that kids are going to watch without being prepared to discuss those things later. I wouldn't have appreciated the kids watching without those discussions.
Your dad seemed to miss the point entirely. I grew up with All In The Family, where they used humor every week, to tackle real world issues that were far from humorous.

There was this one part at the end of 201 where Kyle goes, "You know, I learned something today" and then there just proceeds to be a minute and a half long censor beep. I literally thought my TV was broke so I turned it on on my parent's TV and it was obviously censored there too. It never aired on TV again, and I was so lucky to see it when I did.

I gotta say something about the redhead Cartman episode, saying that it singlehandedly set off a worldwide thing. The ginger thing has been around for a very long time. As a kid with neon red hair, I got mad flak in the 80s and 90s. I went to multiple schools due to moving a lot, and it was the same at all places, so it wasn't just a one-off thing. As some form of an attempt at consolation, older people would tell me about other people they knew that were teased for having red hair. It's discussed in the book Anne of Green Gables (published in 1908), where Anne, a redhead, was teased at school for her red hair. I'm sure a plethora of examples exist for other places and times as well. I know there were jokes about teasing redheads and redheads not having souls in British comedy shows prior to this SP episode. The SP episode may have brought it to light somewhat, but it certainly didn't kick off a worldwide trend.

First of all, you had to have Comedy Central and essentially no one had Comedy Central back then…so you’d have to go to a friend’s house. The show was unlike anything that came before it…not necessarily in its offensiveness but just that it rang totally true. The kids talked like we did, the situations were ridiculous and the entire adult cast was almost impossibly stupid. For 13 year old me, it was a *total* revelation. After Steve explains he's the real Steve Irwin, Satan tells him he has to leave because it's a costume party lol. I vaguely remember people judging the way the Irwin handled animals and many comedians made fun of him for it. So to see people flip to his side entirely after his death was weird. HOWEVER I can kinda see how ppl get the idea that the show kinda paints transgender ppl as "phonies" bc in cases like Garrison, Heather Swanson, Cartman, etc, basically any time the show brings them up, the "trans" character has an ulterior motive for transitioning or smth. As stereotypical as some depictions of homosexuality are in this show a la Big Gay Al and Mr. Slave, there are also many good organic depictions such as Tweek, Craig and Satan. I'm sure if the show had at least 1 genuinely trans character like them, ppl wouldn't claim the show is transphobic so much bc that sounds like bullcrap to me. Just my 2 cents

I agree, I think the representation in the past for trans character in South Park (and basically everything) was far worse than more recent attempts. South Park is interesting since you get to watch the views of the creators become more nuanced and even empathic as the series progresses. Such as how they use to make fun of global warming warners with Man Bear Pig but eventually doubled down on that admitting that the vicious mutant pig was real. With satire there is a sense of responsibility that a lot of people understate, so it's nice to see the show acknowledging it's past faults in some ways, but I feel they need to go further with acknowledging their past history of transphobia even if it's just indirect through making fun of transphobic individuals

The thing you forgot to mention about the movie was, They got pissed off at the demands of the MPAA so they started submitting even worse cuts as a "fuck you" to them and they ended up getting approved. Trey even went on record as saying the movie was MORE offensive than they had originally planned as a result of them messing with the MPAA and a lot of scenes were added that never even meant to be there like the Brian Boytano song.

    • @JediMastr80
      @JediMastr80 2 роки тому +12

Not only that, but the MPAA tried the EXACT same shit when they made Team America: World Police.
However, I heard that Matt and Trey were 5 steps ahead of the MPAA. They made the "sex scene" in Team America extremely long and uncomfortable from what I heard (I don't remember, but I think it was like 3 to 5 minutes long). The scene was edited 9 times before it was given an R rating.
Funny thing, all the things "cut" were things they didn't even want in the movie anyway, so made the MPAA "think" they won by censoring the movie, when in reality, in the end, Matt and Trey won.
I think this is one reason why Matt and Trey haven't released any more movies to theaters as the MPAA would probably slap an NC-17 right away just because they are pissed at them. Seriously, fuck the MPAA. They are nothing but a censorship organization anyway.

My dad just sat with me and explained things that i didn't get and he didn't show me episodes that had concepts that would go over my head--overly political episodes and such we would wait a bit on, he'd show me episodes like Towelie, Christian Rock Hard, and Make Love, Not Warcraft, because they are objectively lighter episodes and still some of my favorites

As someone in the LGBT community (I understand I dont speak for everyone but like, idrc) I don't think the strong woman thing was transphobic, it was literally just a device to get the plot moving while mentioning that it was a touchy topic. I believe the show had transphobic themes in the first few season but like, that was the late 90s and 2000s and matt and trey say they do learn and grow and dont always agree with their previous episodes. And at the end of the day its just south park, not to be taken seriously and it makes fun of everyone for everything equally
