A couple things I failed to mention in this video (my bad):
    Self-Noise (aka: hiss):
I sequestered myself into the bathroom (hey, it's quiet there, don't judge me) and powered the speaker up. I had to be within about 1 foot away from the tweeter before I could hear any noise at all. In my office I had to have my ear right next to the tweeter to hear any noise from the speaker over my computer's fan noise. In other words, self-noise isn't an issue with this speaker.
    Compared to the KALI LP-6v2:
    Roughly the same size.
If you’re in the EU, then it looks like KALI would be about 100 Euro more.
If in the US then the KALI would be about $20 more after you factor in shipping from Thomann and IEC cords.
Going on memory I believe the KALI might be a little bit less linear in the upper midrange and treble area. The KALI is more linear in the midbass/midrange region.
Thomann has smoother directivity. Also had little compression while the KALI’s limiter kicks in at the 102dB @ 1m measurements so about 6dB less dynamic range.
    Either are still great speakers.

This speaker is configurable via Sigma Studio and now that we have a CEA2034, the response can be fully corrected. The eight DIP switches on the rear are also connected directly to the ADAU1701's GPIO, which offers 256 potential preset combinations to trigger any desired DSP function (subwoofer crossover, for example). Incredible value for money.

Encouraged by this review, went ahead and ordered them from Thomann here in Germany. Got them last Tuesday. Replacing my good “old" Edifier R1280Ts on my computer desk (have Wharfedale Lintons as main speakers). They’re pretty nice and neutral. -2 dB adjustment on treble good advise from Erin. Using them as monitors for playing piano through laptop and M-Audio 192 audio interface (balanced to XLR). Pianos are difficult to get right, as they usually hit a number of resonant frequencies on speakers/room modes. These are generally quite neutral but sound slightly “harsher" than the mid-fi Edifiers and in my setup have some pretty strong resonances playing E5 and A5 notes (directly compared them to the Edifiers at the same positions on my desk, just to rule out boundary resonances), which I needed to equalise to get to sound “palatable". They image of course way better than the Edifiers (which have almost 0 imaging properties), which is a nice pro. Other awkward issue is a loud popping sound they make (in my case, just the left channel speaker) when “switched” off using smart plugs. Did a lot of experimenting here; only solution I found is to simply let them permanently plugged, as they turn off automatically on no input after around 10 minutes (don’t quote me on that), power LEDs going red; this way speaker doesn’t “pop” every 90 seconds. Interestingly, Thomann has pulled the A306s and bundles out of their assortment. Not sure if the amplifier’s power supply (caps charging and discharging) has played a role here… Just my 2 cents. Anyway, good find! @ Erin: thanks! Really enjoy your reviews and videos!

I checked the prices on thomann's web store and it surprised me that the A306 and A308 (8 inch version) are currently priced the same. I wonder if the A308 is just as good while offering a bit more output due to the larger woofer.

    Hey Man,
Seems like a very, very competitive offering, especially for EU buyers. Can't really see any flaws here, even the compression and THD are more than OK. Honestly, I used to look down at these monitors : Not a name in the industry, probably no experience or background designing speakers, confidential distribution, branded by an online store... Many things could have gone wrong here. But I stand corrected ! Reliability aside (I do not have any feedback about it), this seems to be some really great budget monitors ! That is a pretty good deal for anyone who wants to build a Dolby Atmos rig. 7.4.4 system with four Swissonic Sub 10, plus eleven of these speakers would total less than 2700 USD in Europe calculated with the highest VAT of EU countries (Hungary). And this includes free shipping. 5-10% cheaper in other countries.
Now if you add an Audient EVO16 and a Behringer ADA8200 converters, plus a Sonarworks Multichannel correction software with their mic, you and up with 4000 USD. And you’ll have a very very good, time aligned and straight response Dolby Atmos mixing environment. Hard to beat.

Fantastic service, good prices, I've bought a fair bit of stuff from there - acoustic treatment and whatever, they're kind of leaning towards musicians and studios and DJs rather than home users, but plenty of great stuff for home users. The speaker runs on 100v-240v so you don't have to use the included EU cable (nor buy an adapter) if you're in the US.
It has an IEC-C14 slot but I believe a IEC-C13 fits since they're the same shape and the speaker doesn't draw more than 10A so it's fine. I'd think some folks here might have one or two (IEC-C13 cables) laying around if you're a cable hoarder like me. (Many computer monitors and desktop power supplies use that style of plug)
I like the fact these have built in DSP. I might have to recommend these to my friend. I could program the DSP for him and include a night mode toggle for one of the dip switches.

The US then the KALI would be about $20 more after you factor in shipping from Thomann and IEC cords.
Going on memory I believe the Callie might be a little bit less linear in the upper midrange and treble area. The KALI is more linear in the midbass/midrange region.
Thomann has smoother directivity. Also had little compression while the KALI’s limiter kicks in at the 102dB @ 1m measurements so about 6dB less dynamic range.

Do I understand this correctly, that they are 2 identical speakers, so that both need their own power cable and left and right channel separately? As I don't see any option to connect 2 speakers together from the pictures. Does that also mean, that it might be a bit difficult to balance the volume, if you need to set the volume separately on both speakers (so basically you can only use it as "set it and forget it" volume knob)?

    • @andr.3348

    • @ErinsAudioCorner
      @ErinsAudioCorner  5 місяців тому

It's hard to say for sure. I did review the A305 and the data is on my site if you want to check that. I mean, technically, they can't be the exact same because size of baffle, drivers, etc will all make a difference to some degree. Whether that's significant enough to matter is a different topic. But, I'd hazard a guess that the A308 is probably within family enough to have similar performance.
