    Take note that this situation with the sub is pretty much standard in the studio industry, you will also get subwoofers with integrated speaker management systems from Genelec, Neumann, and yes even subs from companies like Presonus will have inputs and internally apply crossovers to separate outputs that would go to your "satelite" speakers. I like Genelec's system a lot since it allows for many speakers to be managed by a single subwoofer, just, it's quite expensive...

    I noticed this when it came out. Erin you are dead on. Here is the issue. These $300 speaker with a sub with a crossover built in... properly set up of courrse will walk all over most multi K studio monitors at moderate volume. Att studio engineers.....THIS is the new NS-10 only it actually sounds great too. Pass this speaker up at your peril. Erin you have big ones. I am impressed once again with your honesty. Given their pedigree I am not suprized. The era of speaker BS is over thanks to you.

    Kali keep knocking out great performance speakers for very little money. I know a lot of people use desktop sized speakers as main speakers that do not take a lot of space. Some of the better ones are worthy of placement on stands in a good room. The close driver spacing ensures better xover integration than a 6" 2-way. In fact I'm listening to a pair with 4" woofers now as mains, no problem for my usual listening levels.
    Thanks for another informative review Erin!

    Excellent. Right now I have a pair of Swan M200MKII speakers on my desk; I actually have two pairs because some of the IO didn't work on the first pair so they sent me another pair for free, which was nice. The first pair is now a Bluetooth speaker in the kitchen. They were also $300 per pair (not counting the freebies). I'm fairly satisfied with them, but am curious to explore other options... they are slightly large, even with my large desk, especially since I have a multimonitor setup. One of my monitors blocks the tweeter, and there's no good way to remedy that.
    Maybe I'll do a size comparison and pick these up. $300 is about the limit for what I'll spend on desktop speakers, since I greatly prefer headphones, and already have my HD800s for that.

    Trying to decide on these vs other 5in monitors like the Yamaha HS5s or even the Lp 6s. I have a small room/desk setup and won't be far away from the speakers. I was leaning towards the Lp 6s since they had better reviews than the Yamahas, but was concerned about the size. These seem like the perfect answer!

    Question: I see the specs say the Total System Power is 160 Watts (40W to HF, 40W to LF, x 2 channels). I just received my speakers last night, and when I opened it, I see the DC switching power supply for the amp is only 72 Watts (24V, 3A). My questions are: 1) How is the 160 Watt rating derived? 2) Would there be any benefit to upgrading the power supply?

    • @KillerB101
      @KillerB101 Місяць тому

      No one has answered my question, but I thought I would add that the back of speaker specifically says not to exceed 72 watts of input power, making me further question how the 160 watt rating is derived. Don't get me wrong, the speakers sound great and I'm totally satisfied with my purchase. It just seems questionable to say an amp with 72 watts of input can provide 160 watts of output.

    Nice speakers. A couple of design choices I'm not sold on though, first the cable connecting the speakers looks quite rigid, which could make placement near a rear wall problematic. Also a volume knob might have been better and quicker for adjusting. Other than that though they look like a winner.

    Is difference between these and iLoud Micro's big?
    I want small desktop speakers, these are already kinda big and I would prefer iLoud's, but... if there is big difference in sound... I may go with Kali's.
    Maybe you could make small, cheap desktop speaker comparison? And please take a look at Edifier T5, its very cheap and looks promising as sub for these small speakers.

    • @PileOfEmptyTapes
      @PileOfEmptyTapes 11 місяців тому

      That would depend on how loud you're listening, I guess. Keep in mind that the iLoud Micros will progressively throttle back the low end at higher levels in order to keep the little 3" woofer within safe limits (Hoffmann's Iron Law: small - deep - loud, pick any two). One guy who had them said he found that a bit irritating for music, while gaming was generally fine.

    • @AXYZE
      @AXYZE 11 місяців тому

      @@PileOfEmptyTapes quiet - medium levels. Never louder than typical $50 bluetooth speaker.
      Thats why Im wondering, because I dont see how these two are different, especially if I fill lows with sub so low frequency extension on mains wouldnt really matter

    • @PileOfEmptyTapes
      @PileOfEmptyTapes 11 місяців тому

      @@AXYZE If you have an external sub+crossover to reduce low-frequency loading on your mains, the iLouds should be just about perfect. (There's always bodgery like EQing down the bass on the source and turning up the sub in return, too.) Assuming you can deal with a bit of hiss, that is. They might even work out for you without a sub, as almost fullrange extension at low levels basically is their most notable party trick.
      Note that iLoud Micros have unbalanced inputs only, while the Kalis can also accept balanced signals e.g. from an audio interface (and given that the power-supply seems to have a 3-pin IEC power connector, that may also be the better choice if you want to stay out of trouble with ground loops).

    • @AXYZE
      @AXYZE 11 місяців тому

      @@PileOfEmptyTapes I saw that Presonus Sub 8 BT has regulated high pass filter instead of just passthrough so I could make crossover on like 90hz and iLouds would have a lot easier job to do.
      Do you think that high pass filter would help just a little or a lot? Or maybe it wont help and I should save 50% by going with Edifier T5 that has just passthrough and low pass filter? Low-medium listening levels. I know for high volumes it would help a lot.

    • @PileOfEmptyTapes
      @PileOfEmptyTapes 11 місяців тому

      @@AXYZE Speaking of Edifier, have you seen the measurements of a newer sample of their MR4s? Those looked much closer to spec. These would be another good candidate if you're getting a sub anyway, and it looks like they should integrate fairly well with a LPF + passthrough sub like their T5 (as one would hope).
      Note that in case of the Sub8 BT, I'd want to have a balanced connection between on the input side at least.
      In any setup with a sub, budget on a measurement mic if you don't have already one, and if it's just a UMIK-1.
      So...
      MR4 $100
      T5 $150ish if memory serves?
      UMIK-1 $79
      Desk stands if required for ear height $?? (I've never had speakers standing directly on a desk sound particularly good; in the office I've actually taken the $0 approach by recruiting some old cardboard boxes, stacks of fleamarket grade paperback books would also work)
      REW $FREE
      Measurement experience $PRICELESS
      Sounds like a killer budget 2.1 setup to me.

      Unless the hiss from the JBLs is bothering you, that would rather be a downgrade. LSR305s play deeper and go louder. If you have the space for those, you don't need LP-UNFs. I understand their strong point is desktop mixing - (0.8m away) and have seen folks online say that studio monitors are not what you want for just jamming tunes in hifi... but the descriptions of these make them sound perfect for listening to records and apple music in bed (other than the fact that it's 9 ft away). The title is ".. Perfect Desktop Speaker?", I know.. is the dropoff in quality that dramatic? Would something else be more immersive?

      @@canarinis Hey. I bought kanto ora because of its smaller size and in my opinion more pleasing design. I currently use it without an additional subwoofer and despite that they play very well. Which is surprising because they are tiny. For comparison, my old Edifier MR4 play much worse, and they are 2.5 times bigger than Ora. Very good speakers whether for use with or without a sub, if you like their minimalist look and you care about small size buy them asap. I also listened to Kali, the sound is great but a bit too flat for me, ora just sounds more fun to me, the kali design is also definitely worse than Ora, and the quality of the used materials is average at least. They are also noticeably bigger.

    How do these compare to the Neumann KH80? Is there a massive difference or are they both good?

    • @PileOfEmptyTapes
      @PileOfEmptyTapes 5 місяців тому

      Erin has measured both, so you can compare the data for yourself. But in a nutshell, the KH80 is the substantially better speaker in almost every respect except deep bass (the Neumanns are smaller and it shows) - response flatness, horizontal and vertical dispersion, level handling and distortion. So you definitely get something more when you're spending more than twice as much (plus the requisite audio interface or DAC or at least line isolator needed to connect a computer to them).
      If the LP-UNF had been available last time I bought speakers for the office PC, I would have picked up a pair - going for KH80s or Genelec 8010s / 8020s would have seemed awfully decadent there, not to mention the lack of a convenient front volume control and power switch. This is basically the target market for a system like the LP-UNF, smallish multimedia speakers that are actually good while remaining somewhat affordable. We're not exactly drowning in those. If you have space for some 5" class monitors, things suddenly get a lot more crowded.

      @PileOfEmptyTapes the 3 way will be able to play louder while remaining low in distortion due to the music being split between 3 drivers. There will also be a better off-axis response. If you're going for cheap and loud, get something like a pair of Alto TS408's for $500. They can put out 130db with 1000w rms each. If you're not throwing a party or trying to project beyond the garage, the Kali's are an excellent choice for quality sound that goes deep

    • @PileOfEmptyTapes
      @PileOfEmptyTapes 5 місяців тому +1

      That's a complete no-brainer - used LP8v2s all the way! Those will go substantially louder and play deeper bass. A 4.5" system is personal / desktop audio and a far cry from PA, an 8" gets a lot closer. Per Erin's results, the LP-UNF will top out at about 91 dB SPL, while the LP8v2s will manage about 102 dB... not exactly happily, but they'll do it. As the saying goes, there is no replacement for displacement, and an 8" has a lot more Sd and Xmax so will have physics on its side. If you want it loud, size matters.
      Do keep the different cabling requirements in mind, as well as the need for an external volume control of sorts.
