    I just installed a new headunit in my car and have been trying to learn how to tune the sound output. I was looking for a good explanation of the theory behind slopes relating to crossovers and the whole dB/octave concept. I am not a musician, I just enjoy listening to music when it sounds pleasing to my ears. After watching a bunch of other videos I stumbled onto yours and now I finally understand the concept. Thank you 🙏

    I thought this was a very good tutorial, the mysterious slopes explained in depth. So many tutorials don’t go this far or in a way I can get my head around it. I have subscribed to replace some tutorials that were bad advice. Many thanks.

      No problem! I'm glad this video helped. Just a little tip...whenever you make EQ moves, A/B as much as possible. This will keep you from being too aggressive as you'll immediately hear if you went too far or not far enough. ONLY use aggressive moves if you really need to. If something is so problematic that you have to get crazy with it, don't be afraid to either make the move or to just re-record the part.

      @@TLAudioMixingMastering helped A lot, slope 6/12/24/48db is huge unknown territory for me that i was not aware of, i was cutting everything like mad, what is the worst, high freq too.. many of my tracks lost energy for " no reason"
      Your video saved the day.

    Can you explain what happens when the Q value is less than 1 and you are doing a low-cut (high pass) VS when doing the same with a Q value of 1. (also with varying db/oct factor).
    Its that when 24 db/oct is cut at 200hz with Q value 0.5 it cuts less futher up the freq (and freq just after 200hz is louder (say 300hz) , but 400hz is 100%)
    VS
    when 12db/oct is cut at 200hz with Q value 0.5, it cuts more further up the octave (and freq just after 200hz is less loud(say 300hz) , but 400hz is 100%)
    why is that?

    So basically, If the manufacturer says my midbass/midrange frequency response is from 50hz to whatever...with a 24db slope, I need to set my xover at about 110hz to still get that 50hz without damaging the speaker???

      John Booker Yup. If you want 50Hz to come in 24db quieter, then you would set up your HP filter at 110Hz with a 24db slope.

      @@TLAudioMixingMastering cool thanks. Just got this little PRV DSP, trying to figure it out.it has 1 set of inputs. So I've been trying to find out...so use the front input on my head unit or do I use Y connectors at the head unit and use the front AND rear inputs. I know left and right will be automatica....but how do you get a rear signal if the rear inputs of the head unit is not being used??

      @@carlitot5388 If you want 80Hz to come in 24dB quieter, then the crossover needs to be set at 160Hz.
