I'm 72 (I was in my 30's in the 80's), and tried cutting it myself and ended up with a mullet instead. Still trying to get the sides caught up with the back. 🙄
I just turned 77 and remember the shag!! I love this haircut.!! Been trying to get my hair cut like that for years and nobody knew what I was talking about. thanks for the videos. Hope a lot of beauticians watch it!!
I am 44 but I always want a shag, only one girl could do it but she moved very far away from Budapest, where I live... and no one knows what I am talking about!!! I am going to a hairdresser tomorrow and Im gonna show this to him 😂
Yes, I use to get my hair cut like this when I lived in Ohio 35 years ago. This layering technique was taught in the schools and I have very wavy curly hair. This layering technique thinned my hair and all I had to do was use a diffuser and scrunch my hair as a dried it. Nothing else. It was called an inverted layer and they said the same words cut in pie sections and brought up the crown. Love, Love it and I've not gotten a good hair cut since I moved.
I’ve never stopped doing this cut in one way or another 😊 just cut my 13 year old granddaughters long locks to this shag,, only she calls it the Wolf cut 😂
Omg I’m am such a shag girl!! I’ve always loved this style and still do at “60” !! Favorite hair style of all time. Never grows old to me Great job Matt!!
Growing up I always wanted to be a Beautician. Here I am at 66 years old and never brought that dream into fruition. Just watch your video on Shag Cut. I now know where to go for instructional how to’s…what you need… explanation of different areas of the head…..Thank you! I am really looking forward to watching your videos.
Matt! these purple guides you have on the video are amazing, I'm often watching someone in person or on a video and can tell if they are holding the hair totally horizontal or slightly diagonal.. unless they say and then it also looks like finger position changes and I'm unsure of how they are moving through... so thank you for this added tool. Love it, and the quality and time you put into the video.
Thank you so much for this video. I have been talking to people about the shag cut for a while and nobody seems to get it. Your video gives me legitimacy. I have been trying for sometime to find somebody who can do a shag. It doesn’t matter how I describe it they all get it wrong. Having learned this cut in the 70s when I was hairdressing for a while, for most of my life I did my own cut. More recently I let my hair grow fairly long and a few months ago decided I would like to have a long shag. Again going to the salon they got it wrong and made a mess of it. Unable to find anybody else who can fix it, I ended up fixing it myself but because I can’t get the angles for a long shag on myself I had it up losing most of my length. I would love to see a video of a long shag cut. I’m thinking Farrah Fawcett length. Thanks very much 😊
Thank You Matt , you’re awesome Best Teacher, I’m debating in a shag now, my hair is curly so it’s easy . But thinking of going back to a Bob ,lob , but too much work ! blowing , straight iron , product on my tinted hair , making it dryer ! But will decide soon . Thank You again for inviting me . 👏👏👏👏
I was born in the early 60s and have always loved the shag haircut. So happy this is coming back in style. Going to have my daughter cut my hair into a shag.
I think this style would really suit me. My hair likes to fall forward and that's how this cut is. I had a shag when I was 11 yrs old (1971) and I've always remembered it as my favourite hair cut!
Love this video! Just got the tri razor and I am in LOVE! Would like to see more videos using that tool as your primary source and learn how to use it to it’s full potential.
Hello, already have fse ed tutorial & tri razor. Thank you. Please consider doing a few videos on Fine, Thin hair cut trendy styles. I think this us an under served skilled set. Ciao Johanna
I have wavy/semi-curly hair & opted for a low-maintenance shag that I don't have to style. I just wash (or wet down if I'm in a hurry) and spray in some "Milkshake" leave- in conditioner to give a little definition to my waves and GO.
You could leave a section at the bottom and do the layers ,then come back and cut the length to where you want it at the end, also as long as you're overdirecting the hair on the sides and back you won't be cutting off too much length. That's how I would do it anyway.
Thank you. Layered like a pro! Love layered cuts. I was wondering if you can show a video on layered cuts with wavy hair. Have a very difficult time finding hairdressers that can cut layered hair on waves. Thank you enjoyed the video very much. :)
Hi, On UA-cam I searched for how to cut a layered haircut of the 1970s & I saw you in this video. It's okay but not like in the 70s because the hair is not layered at the top but brought forward. If I find anyone who can do it I'll send it to you. You did a good haircut for people in these days. Thanks
Hi my name is Sharon I'm new on here .I'm from New Zealand 1st time on your channel love the cut I'm 62same I grew up with this style in the days awesome 👌
Been looking for a good tutorial for a home cut (used one in 2018 that ruled, but can't find it anymore) and this one worked great for me. Finally! Easy to follow and good angles to see what's happening. :)
I absolutely love this! Your videos are so helpful for me. Can't wait to get the Haircutting System education as well! Thank you for all that you do for us!
Not keen on the fringe, would love to see it with a longer, curtain fringe and how would I style that myself? It's gorgeous but I don't think I could replicate that and I'm pretty good at styling my hair!
I think you are amazing! And I really enjoy watching you work. My question is, how do you compensate or adjust what you do when you are working on an actual client who may have a strong hairline or cowlicks that may cause the hair to not cooperate so easily. Thank you, Debbi
Your movement is perfection. You have such a skilled hand! Subscribed instantly! I don’t practice anymore, but I do my daughter’s hair- and likely always will (perks of having a stylist as a mom). I’ll always have a passion for hair, but due to health complications- it’s just hard for me to stand for several hours on end unfortunately. Thanks for the excellent content!
Can you please do a video on all of the texturizing techniques not necessarily how to execute them, but how to use them. A visual of the results they produce would help? Sometimes it's so hard to know what to use.
I had a shag back in the day. Fortunately my hair loves it. Then I became a stylist in 1980. Training at Gene Juarez a high end salon in Seattle. I was blessed to get to hug Paul Mitchell & John Paul Dejoria. I met Irvin Rusk and Farouk Shami when he developed Sunglitz & no ammonia hair color. At beauty school of all places! Allan Benfield Bush ABBA. I was lucky to get small venues for classes which was cool. I love your cut & the detail you put into it as well as the finish work everyone else seems to zip through which I get but. Anyway I have had heart issues aortic anyurism but I would love to get back into hair. Color was my specialty Took some Micheal Cole classes worked daily with Paul Mitchell associates & platform artist. Which I had a chance to do for Farouk systems but I had 3 young children at the time I didn't feel right leaving to long. My oldest became an estititian. Your video inspires me & makes me miss our beautiful industry. thank you so much! Cindea
Every tutorial videos you have made are easy to understand and followable.🔥🔥 Love you Idol from Manipur, India. Please make sure about the colour techniques videos.
Great haircut and great tutorial. Question. How do you grow this cut out I have my cut in a shag and am ready to move on to another style So many layers. Any suggestions for a style while growing it out? Thanks
Matt, I am a 49 year old hairstylist and salon owner. I have wavy, curly hair with stick straight bangs. My hair feels like it grows quite slow because of the curl in it. I also have had some thinning since I’ve been in my 40’s. I’m wondering if there is a cut out there for people like me, like a curly bob or something that could make me feel younger and a little sassier. I don’t like to take a lot of time on my hair and with the curl i just let it air dry or diffuse and it looks fairly decent lol. Is there a way to zazz up a bob or a shorter styler on a person like me with curly hair? Thanks Matt. You’re videos are great. I like your humble personality and direct teaching. Thanks:)
Amazing artist, Thanks Matt you are an amazing, humble, professional and caring guy, your videos are so much fun and full of content, I'm studying Cosmetology but haven't learn a thing here but with your videos, I'm taking your clases yes or yes!!! Thanks again!! You are awesome!!

I’ve lived in New York for the last 40 years and for the life of me I cannot find anybody who understands a precision based shag haircut that starts at the crown and is cut at a 90° angle! Thank you for this video I love that you’re doing this I have dabbled in hair cutting and want to learn more. From this haircut, would you show how to fringe the bottom more maybe with your razor? I’m just curious if that’s how you do it.
I love that yellow hair colour and I was wondering how to get it thanks alot Matt for always doing the videos of the best haircut you do. It's been 3 years Im getting those classes and learned so much about the alignment, the sections, elevation and you know that all you taught about

I’m a huge fan of layered haircuts! I’m so tempted to cut mine like this again 😀 I’m 61 & grew up in the 70’s and 80’s
I am 67 and did it again
I'm 72 (I was in my 30's in the 80's), and tried cutting it myself and ended up with a mullet instead. Still trying to get the sides caught up with the back. 🙄
Me too..If there's a certain haircut or fashion you love do it..Life is short..😻🌹
I had a shag in my teens, 63 this year. I had waist length hair and had my hairdresser cut it off into a shoulder length shag. Love it!
@@srvntlilly I am62 thick hair might go for long shag
I just turned 77 and remember the shag!! I love this haircut.!! Been trying to get my hair cut like that for years and nobody knew what I was talking about.
thanks for the videos. Hope a lot of beauticians watch it!!
If you could have found me I would have shagged your hair. I’m 61 and it’s my favorite cut to do.
I am 44 but I always want a shag, only one girl could do it but she moved very far away from Budapest, where I live... and no one knows what I am talking about!!! I am going to a hairdresser tomorrow and Im gonna show this to him 😂
Me too! They give me a layered cut, but it's surely not my gypsy shag!
That's not the gypsy shag. Can't you find it in old photos and recreate it?
Yes, I use to get my hair cut like this when I lived in Ohio 35 years ago. This layering technique was taught in the schools and I have very wavy curly hair. Best haircut I’ve ever! Had it in the 70’s thrilled it’s back for all to enjoy. Works beautifully on my older thinner 60 something hair!
I’ve never stopped doing this cut in one way or another 😊 just cut my 13 year old granddaughters long locks to this shag,, only she calls it the Wolf cut 😂
This is how a real shag is cut. I am a hairstylist 42 years now. You nailed it. Love it
Love this cut just finding someone that can do it is a difficult mission
I asked the stylist for a medium shag cut and he gave me a medium Bob 🙄
Usually a more young and/or trendy stylist who looks edgy does shags like this if that helps
It would be really cool to see you do some old school sassoon haircuts. Loved this cut, oldie but goodie for sure.❤
I have always loved the old school Shag cut now I am old enough to try it❤❤❤❤
I Loved the shag haircut in the 70s !
As a barber I really appreciate you’re instruction aspects! So many forget to section for appropriate results. Much love
I love it will it work on things hair I love the shaggy haircut

Love it!!! Great haircut, the good old "shag". Always had my hair cut in a "shag"
I love your videos! I would love to see you explain how to avoid accidentally removing the length if the hair were longer😁

@Laura A agreed. I learned this cut in the 90's...but no one told me to drop out the perimeter....needless to say, it was shorter than planned 😁
