    I really did enjoy this game. But about halfway through I adopted the mindset of a pest exterminator.
    "Yes, yes how terrifying you are. Now allow me to allevaite you of your legs."

      +Matthew “The Hoodless Hunter” Hunter I honestly don't think Just Cause can really fuck up its third installment. If you think about it, 2 was basically a fuckaround sandbox hayday with a story tacked to the end, so as long as 3 has even MORE ways to fuck around and do crazy things, and improves on the few shortcomings of 2, then I don't see how it could be considered any worse, because its more of the same formula that works but with more bells and whistles. (NOT saying that Just Cause is bad, by the way, just realized the last sentence could be taken way outta context)

      Halo 1/Dead Space 1: Oh crap, space zombies are trying to parasitize my corpse!
      Halo 2/Dead Space 2: Oh crap, space zombies are actually being directed by a diabolical sentient intelligence!
      Halo 3/Dead Space 3: Oh crap, I killed all the space zombies (I think?) but I'm now marooned millions of lightyears from civilization!
      Halo 4/Dead Space 3: Awakened DLC: Oh crap, I've unwittingly unleashed an ancient evil from its eternal slumber!
      Halo 5/Avengers: Age of Ultron: Oh crap, the AI I thought was going to save humanity has gone rouge and is trying to cheat death by raising an army of expendable robot bodies! Wait... What were we talking about again?

    Pretty much covers my thinking on Call of Dead Space. The first Dead Space scared me out of my skin at times because necros didn't just jump out and run at you. There were times I was standing at a bench doing something, and when I exited out I saw something pointy on the top of my screen. I turn around and a guy is just standing a foot from my back staring at me. That shit is just gone now, but it was genuinely freaky, you kept sweeping every corner to try to spot them first.

    • @morgatron4639
      @morgatron4639 11 років тому +2

      Ikr, Dead space 1 is one of my favorite games of all time. The necros would actually sneak up behind you quietly. Also I liked having fun with cute minigame just to be reminded about the horrific environment once you stepped out of the room. As for dead space 2, it was awesome. I loved how they made it baddass with the transforming helmets and the space flight. (advanced suit has the coolest helmet in the history of ever) But they still kept it pretty damn scary. I also really enjoyed the competitive multiplayer. It was an awesome feeling to be stomping down the hallways with your friends as a badass security team and then gunning down monsters from all directions once you got to an open room, forming a shield around the guy on a console, and escorting someone to victory as you halt executions and call out targets. Necro gamplay was awesome too, waiting for the human to round the corner before you leap out and start an execution with your friends cutting them down. It's so sad no one plays it anymore. DS3 was good. The co op was very well done, and the customizable weapons was an amazing upgrade, along with the combat roll. I was disappointed by the lack of a competitive multiplayer mode, a refined version of DS2's with more necros and customizable weapons would be amazing. They could even use it to tell the story of the sovereign colonies on tau volantis as shit was hitting the fan 300 years before isaac gets there. Also, NO ADVANCED SUIT?!?!? T.T

    So, what's funny is the fact that I actually like the first couple of chapters. The ones leading up to crash landing on Hoth and then, like, 1 or 2 chapters after that, because it tries to maintain the atmosphere. I loved the bit when you first crash land on Hoth and you're at risk of freezing to death, but Necromorphs keep popping up out of the snow to moider you. Its tense because you instinctively going slow because A) you don't know where or when they're going to pop up, and B) because you don't want to be jump scared. But you have to keep moving because you'll freeze otherwise. It was tense as hell. Then it just got over-the-top dumb.

      i think he hit the nail on the head in the video in saying that it's an adventure in making the product as unoffensive to as many palettes as possible. this just generally has the result of making a more "tolerable" experience for a wider audience while reducing how many people outright dislike it, but also how many people can outright enjoy it.

    Micro transactions i never really minded that much, people that are lazy or stupid can make it easier on themselves or buy skins and fancy hats but ONLY IF ITS FUCKING FREE TO PLAY!!!
    If you make a game, pay 60$ on a half assed piece of crap someone scrubbed off the toilet and put it in a DVD case, then you don't ask the person to cough up 10$ bucks to unlock god mode
    Back in the day there use to be something called "Cheat Codes", its like they make the games a pain in the ass on purpose, so people buy weapons just to get the bloody nightmare over with sooner

  • @SajirouPlays

    Been through 5 play-throughs of Dead Space 3, one Co-Op and I still go back to play it. Despite having iffy story elements and not being a full on horror game, it's at least a lot of fun to take down Necromorphs with whatever crazy weapon you've decided to duct tape together.
    There are moments in co-op that can be scary, like the Carver missions where at times, Carver is actually separated from the Co-Op partner and brought into his own inner world full of scary demon children and a dead wife whose all too happy for you to "Make Us Whole." Course, the partner has to defend his real body as he's doing a little booty shaking dance of crazy in the corner (or rather, the NPC version of the co-op partner) which is brilliantly done.
    The "Horror" aspect is mostly brought in during the co-op missions, for the other player, while the other just defends the former from endless waves of enemies.

  • @LordTyph
    @LordTyph 11 років тому +4

    What I'd think would be a good idea for a co-op horror game would be the idea of having the characters getting separated being something that could happen either at fixed points and/or randomly, with some encounter with a monster causing a cave in, or the floor giving way under the leading player, or needing to go down separate roads in order to pull something off simultaniously and having to support each other throughout. The idea behind it being that, despite the fun you're having, it can all be cut off in an instant, leaving you and your partner both stranded, alone, unable to help each other, and very much in danger of getting fisted on their own, leaving both of you scrambling to find each other again before the super zombie death muncher finds either of you.

    The transformation from survival horror to action game actually makes a lot of sense. In the first game, Isaac was a useless, terrified, scrawny, relatively young engineer with literally no combat experience. As the series progressed he got more and more used to seeing necromorphs and fighting Unitologists, not to mention slowly becoming gradually more insane. He became stronger, faster, more experienced with weapons, more willing to kill, and a lot stronger-willed. He made the transformation from damsel in distress to serious badass action hero, and the game's followed his character progression. I enjoy all of the DS games, 3 included, because the gameplay perfectly matches the character progression.

      The only reason why co-op horror games don't usually work is because no-one knows how to be scary(horror is a lost art) and devs only want to appeal to people who have attention span of a gnat. Modern devs think the action part in "action survival horror" means give the players enough weapons and ammo to conquer several small nations.Throwing a second player in just kills the scariness further.

The co op was actually single player with AI THAT ACTUALLY WORKED!!! and the crap your pants scares came from the trandoshan levels where you and your squad mates were forced to separate. It was a brilliant blend because even though you are in a group of 4 badasses you where still saying oh crap when trandoshans came. the ammo was common but scarce enough to leave you sweating.

    Forgetting the fact that the only true horror element of any of the three games was almost dying, I had no quarrels with the game. I enjoyed the repetitive gameplay especially considering that I crafted every single gun ever invented under the sun and slightly modified it ever know and then. Repetitive? Yes. Boring? Not quite... I did want a continuation for dead space 2 story and I wasn't disappointed especially since I didn't expect much. Bad game? No. Recommend? Maybe, but only so that I can co-op. Good game? Eh, sure...

      to be fair, they borrowed from John Carpenter's The Thing ever since the beginning; the game's story more closely follows H.P Lovecraft's "at the mountains of madness" in the 2ed and 3rd act. You should read it, it's pretty good.

    Yeah, I don't think it's exactly fair that anyone living in Australia gets to be the defnitive judge of horror. It just raises the bar too high. They're already living in Earth's little death-world microcosm.
    Seriously though, I'm perhaps the only person not scared by the parts of Silent Hill 2 that I should have been scared by. I need some tension and jump scares. Constant overbearing pressure from a nebulously existing enitity is fine, but after a while it's like get on with it. At some point I actually have to feel like my person is in danger. There's also the fear that the person whose headspace you're subletting won't actually resonate with you. I mean sure you analyze them, "The nurses are the manifestation of his psychosexual manifestations!" However, looking at horror clinically is not scary. Horror touches a primal nerve. Fire. Darkness. Failure. A fucking guy with a bag on his head taking shotgun blasts to the face before lopping your bean off with a chainsaw. You know, primal elemental stuff.
    There are some genuinely scary parts in Dead Space 3. Walking across snow for instance.

      RobertAniFreak Yeah, I think the issue with EA is that everything released under their label feels crammed full of market research insights. Survey says people think games with multiple settings feel more epic? Stick that shit in there. Crafting system? Yeah, why not? People like love stories. Gotta have one and damn the rest of the plot. And be sure to give the protagonist a self-sacrificial attitude. People idolize that shit these days.
      They seem to pour a ton of resources into mechanics and presentation devices and story elements that people have loved forever, but they rush the part where they assemble those things into something that means something interesting. For example, why on Earth did this game need a love triangle? How does that possibly advance or strengthen the game's message?
      The first game (and even the second) hinted at the trilogy's message being something interesting about the infectiousness of religious zealotry. That message played water boy to this series' slurpy, explosive, hard-knock protagonist quarterback.

      There's no justification for the protagonist not being scared of the monsters in a horror game. Give Isaac PTSD, or more hallucinations, or something. Or at least make it so he's not constantly in contact with friends and allies, or you're actually in danger of running out of ammo or health kits. But none of that is feasible when you have to weave a Co-op partner into the story, I suppose.

    Did everyone just forget about Co-op mode in DS3? If you've ever actually tried it, it's pretty incredible. The character development between the two characters is fun and new, the shooter gameplay, though not the scariest, is still fun and becomes incredible not because of the creatures, though they are disturbing, but because the new missions. You get the basic gameplay and the amazing psycological horror, where SPOILER you get to see the two characters deal with one slowly losing his mind, and having to deal with scenes like fighting an endless amount of shadow demons and being able to witness things the other character can't, questioning reality and making the situation super tense. Having to protect others from steadily increasing waves of enemies while having to finish hard-to-make-out shape puzzles breeds a whole new kind of tension, never knowing when your unprotected self will get your spine ripped out by a speedy necromorph who slipped by....

    • @Gryphonvibes
      @Gryphonvibes 11 років тому +1

      Two reasons why that's false: One, tension can be created by one player being helpless while another has to save them. High stakes combined with total reliance on someone else is a great source. Second, psychological horror is better when one doesn't fully understand what's going on. When two characters are there, a barrier forms between what they perceive, which can increase tension as well.

    • @grandmaster1200
      @grandmaster1200 11 років тому +1

      While psychological horror relies on not being able to understand it, the main focus is providing tension by not actually showing the mosnter or by having the monster be symbolic. Dead Space 3 has the mosters in clear daylight that just look like malformed clay people with leprosy. Compare that to, say, Silent Hill, you have creatures with coherent shapes (humanoids, dogs, religious depictions, etc.) that have a form of symbolism, one example being Pyramid Head. Silent Hill also does a good job of not having jumpscares, but instead prolong the monster's reveal by having clear sound effects showing something is off, then refusing to show the monster, making you think of what it could be, getting more and more scared until it reveals itself and you have no other thoughts but "Run!"

    They should go the rout of alien isolation, and take the survival horror back to a point where it's actually scary, enemies are a serrious threat, ammunition, and maybe even weapons are scarce, and so is health. You should be alone, or partnered with someone you can't trust to keep you safe as far as you'd throw them. The monster should be at least partially hidden, or hard to see under. Most circumstances, cueing it's arrival with either a noise that is out of place, or a muted monster noise and a slam as something falls, creating tension before it ever apperes on screen,

What Dead Space 3 is is no longer a horror game, but almost a third person shooter with a huge amount of weapon customization. When I play it, it''s not for the terror or walking around a corner to find 3 necromorphs right after I ran out of ammo, but more to have fun blowing them to little giblets.

  • @DarkHypernova

    If they ever plan to make another sequel, they could try to make it a little scary again in some ways.
    First, I think it would be best if they'd dropped Isaac as the main character (though they could still have him arround as a supporting one). Playing a character who survived three major calamities really kills the feeling of vulnerability. Personally, I think it would have played out better if Isaac had died at the end of DS 2.
    Secondly; they should take a good look at how DS Extraction and mobile handled the hallucination aspect. Fleshing those out could create some real tension. In fact, at the end of the first chapter in Extraction after fighting off insane attackers, it turns out you were mad all allong and spent the whole time slaughtering innocents. The mobile game on the other really fucks with your perception of reality, making you question if certain events are even real.

    while cover shooting was part of crysis 2's gameplay, I don't remember using it much heavily on even the hardest settings. and it wasn't you constantly running to chest high walls and and taking pot shots. you had to keep moving out into the open for proper firefights and it heavily relied on flanking and ambush tactics. and even in mass effect, though the primary gameplay mechanic was cover, It did encourage you to use close combat tactics.

    I don't get why people can't like DS3 because it has the natural progression of any person who goes through a horror scenario.
    Horror works when the protag doesn't know what's happening, is ill-prepared and are up against insurmountable odds.
    If that protag survives and chooses to go back into the fray, then horror doesn't work as effectively.

      That's no excuse. This isn't an RPG, fans don't give a shit about character development. They just want it to be scary! Moreover plenty of excellent horror games have characters willingly returning to a bad situation and having it be just as scary(Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Corpse Party, Clock Tower, ect.).
      Plus I somehow doubt one can be overly prepared for creatures that dynamically change with every situation.

    In the first game, Isaac is a civilian engineer with basic combat training who navigates a ghost ship of horrors through a combination of jury-rigged weapons, technical knowhow, incompetant villain cliches, and frankly insane amounts of dumb luck that was proof the fates had decided Isaac deserved to suffer but not necessarily die.
    EVERY other game is the same formula except we get more of humanity's backstory, the marker's influence is introduced, and Isaac develops as a character.

    Yes, most developers usually want to make games the way they usually have, 1 price to buy, maybe some addons later that are not required; or a f2p system where you could purchase upgrades at your choice.
    EA's hire ups were the one that tried the hybrid bastardization between free to play and AAA price steam which effectively killed Dead Space. And I believe its from one of the voiceboxes the company uses to say "now you will really enjoy this game, just need some more money."

    I actually quite enjoyed Dead Space 3, though that’s because I never played Dead Space to be scared and because I wasn’t at point in time where I was smart enough to understand why microtransactions in a pay-upfront game like this was so hilariously greedy. Had I actually stopped to think about it, I’m sure I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much, but I do think it’s very telling that since the Awakened DLC came out, I haven’t touched the game at all.
    I do however think the Build-A-Bear weapons were a missed opportunity. So many things to try out and in the end, the best two guns for me were the standard Plasma Cutter and a hybrid rifle-shotgun. Not even a rifle stand-in or a shotgun stand-in, the way the Plasma Cutter is pretending to NOT be a generic handgun, these weapons are the “new” weapons in this game and rather than being mining tools that operate in a similar way to other weapons in games but at least have a reason to be mining tools instead of military weapons, they’re just actual, bullet-firing weapons. What a load of bollocks...
