      I disagree with you, not friends but the family
      Sunohara , Kotomi, Tomoyo, Fujibayashi's twin
      They all did nothing for Tomoya in his distress
      Only Sanae and Akio endured the pressure and sadness and then planned and pushed Tomoya to move on with his life as if he were their real son.

      @@alex-carter In the VN, he never got close to them aside from Kyou and Sunohara, so it is hard to adapt it in the anime.
      Plus it's 2003, and it was said they all went away from the town aside from Kyou.

    I've watched Clannad 5 times. Once as a high school freshman, once as a senior (oof that was a rough rewatch I cried so many times that time), a couple times throughout college and once very recently just after getting my first real job, buying a house and getting married. This show speaks to me every time I watch it and in different ways every time. As my perspective and life has changed, my thoughts and feelings during a rewatch have too. I've never seen a show that shows the transition from kid to 'baby adult' so well, and the sentiments and themes are beautiful. Clannad changed my life and continues to every time I see it.

      Rewatching Clannad is rough. Once you know what's coming you start seeing other scenes in a different light and things hit even harder. There is a reason this is my favorite anime of all time haha. I've probably seen it 10+ times now, and it doesn't get any easier, ever! As a parent now too, Ushio's content just wrecks me.

      First time I saw this show was at my friends place where I was blessed to stay since I was homeless after being a year at conscrition and they fucked up my rent, or just straight up didn't pay it, and I lost my home and everything I had saved up to that point in my life.
      I had divorsed before I went there and got small daughter, everything was fucked up if you will, and my escape was anime, and I decided to take this little piece of drama. Well, I had to bite my underwear, so I would not run into the streets crying my brains out with this one.
      Now like +10 years after, everything is more than fine, I got well paying job with no quota on hours I do, but still fixed payment. I can do most of my work from home and so on, no worries at all. And still when I recently visited this anime, I cried like a little baby again.

    This was my first anime, and before watching it a friend of mine said to me "all you need to know is that everything will be OK". I'm a crybaby and hate stories with sad endings, so when she said that, it was to ensure that I would watch it all the way through. And I'm just so thankful I did.
    No other anime has made me feel so amazed and enamored with the mundane and the ordinary. Everytime I rewatch it, I find myself falling in love with life again.
    An unemployed 27 y/o still trying to find my way through life and accept the changes all around me. But still enamored with the beauty this show brought me and the hope that "everything will be OK."

    I remember watching Clannad and After Story in real time. When you said some other, better story may come along and it will push Clannad out of your top spot resonated with me. I will say that in 12+ years, I am still waiting. Anohana, Your lie in April, Angel Beats, etc have all come along and moved me as well, but they all still pale in comparison. Having read tons of science fiction, fantasy, and classical works, watched months worth of anime, and read months worth of manga in my 65+ years, I can say I have never found a more complete story in ANY genre or format that is as complete as Clannad and After Story. I can only wish you luck in finding one yourself, I have basically given up hope of ever finding anything better at this point.

    I just rewatched it and the rewatch is loaded. Theres tons of subtext that implies the theme of moving on and change in the second half
    I hate baseball but its a brilliant metaphor for stepping up to the plate and taking a swing at life at the risk of striking out vs catching what life throws at you
    Besides the god tier writing and soundtrack, the lighting and animation are imo the best stuff kyoto has done especially considering when it came out, the use of lighting is unmatched, the 60fps animation in the illusionary world along with the lighting work and the long hair design of the girl is chefs kiss, the way the hair flows is peak animation.
    2005-2012 was peak kyoto animation it just hits like nothing else
    Also the voice actor for the pig is a legend lmao

    Clannad After Story truly is the masterpiece everyone claims it is. I have never watched a piece of media ever (live action or anime) that emotionally moved me the way Clannad did. Just thinking about some of the heartwrenching scenes in this show can move me to tears. I even got a little weepy watching this video as well. This story and its execution is top notch and I'm not one to turn on the waterworks so easily. This series seems to accomplish this feat with ease, which is a testament to Kyoto Animation and their great storytelling abilities. I will definitely have to revisit Clannad and Clannad After Story again someday soon to see how time having a habit of changing one's perspective on life. I have a feeling Clannad is like Evangelion in that after every viewing one can walk away with totally different perspectives depending on what you are going through in life at the time of viewing. Bravo Kyo Ani. Well done! Congratulations!

    I'll admit. Going into highschool I was a depressed kid, who home schooled and was destined to fail. I was 2 years behind with no goals in life. This show showed me my path in life. It made me who I am today. After watching it I had some kind of epiphany. For the next 3 days I did nothing but lay down and think about the future. It inspired me to go back to a normal school, make friends, and find out what my goals are in life. I just graduated highschool at 20, with honors. With a certification in the field I know I want to work in. Whilst I may not have found the person I want to live my life with. I cannot deny the fact that this series truly saved me. I will forever love it, just for making me want to push forward and become who I am today.

    This video described Clannad perfectly, and I wish there were more videos like this. Clannad really changed my life and put a new lens on it, not only have I seen the importance of family, but through Tomoya and Nagisa's Relationship, I learned what it is to have someone you love, cherish, and couldn't live without. I learned what Marriage is all about, I learned to make memories, make friends, and as Tomoya says, “You shouldn’t hold back your tears. You should let it all out while you still can.. because when you get bigger sometimes you can’t cry even if you have something to cry about.” Before Clannad, I never cried and kept it together so people wouldn't worry about me, but when I watched Clannad, it made me cry like I never had before. I thank Clannad for how it has helped me this year and for all it has helped me realize and learn so far. I'm sure that Clannad will bring me tears every time I watch it, along with that, another lesson that I have to learn. Thank You for making this video, if your looking for another good thing that filled that void that Clannad left for me id definitely recommend Plastic Memories it reminded me a lot of Clannad. #Clannad

    I think another massive thing about clannad is perspective. Nagisa always wanting food and the diner popping up on the way to school, the school being revitalised, even the hospital being built on the hill where Akio prayed to be able to heal nagisa. In the eyes of the beholder, it could be change that's uncomfortable and difficult, but change that will ultimately do good. I think it's a big case and point for the series. Not only do our views change based on our experiences, but our experiences change how we perceive things as either a positive or a negative. I still think the biggest point for that is that watching the show at different points in our lives changes how we emotionally engage in the topics depicted.
    Overall, a special piece of media that will always have a reserved space in my heart.

  • @kettumusic
    @kettumusic 2 роки тому +5

    I think the ending wasn't a copout in the slightest either, simply due to the emotional weight carried by the scene of Ushio's birth in episode 16 brought back in a much more happy setting followed by the montage of their family spending time together.
    That combined with Nagisa's leitmotif arranged in such a grand way managed to wring out the strongest emotional reaction I've ever had to a piece of media, I know it's cliché but everything built up into such a beautiful end shook me up so viciously that I can call my perception of positivity and negativity as a whole altered forever.
    Fantastic exploration of this series, thank you.

    I just cant stop watchin clannad since 2016
    Clannad is about Ushio 'the result of true love story
    Clannad is about how we deal with difficulties in our life
    Clannad is about how we cant just deal with parents bad attitude and find another family "furokawa"
    Clannad is about how we can change our mindset thank to the people "nagisa" with us
    Clannad is about how little things have to be saved because they are so precious
    Clannad is about friendship and fools in our daily life from people "sunohara and the others"
    Clannad is about drama and redemption all these change in the lives of tomoya and his friends

    I kind of just realize the reason tomoya chooses to talk to nagisa again when he gets a second chance isn't just because he loves her ,but because he realizes despite the fact that yes nagisa might die if he talks to her and they start dating. Its the fact if he doesn't then he will never get to see his daughter ushio. He will never get to cherish those moments with her and give him the happy ending he seeks.
    His arch wasn't just about coming to terms with nagisa's death but learning to care and be able to live with his daughter. She is what their love created. And none of this will happen of he never gets to meet nagisa. He learns that just because nagisa is dead it doesn't mean she is gone forever as he still has ushio. Another person for him to love and care for.

    This is one of the best videos I've watched in my life. Clannad After Story is simply the best written story I've got to know. First watched it as a 14 years old teen just starting to have real problems in life. Rewatched later on my early 20'a and burst in tears much more than before. Now I'm rewatching it as a 26 years old man, married to a loving wife and just by watching your video I cried more than I remember crying for this whole year. Thank you. Thank you so much for making this. Clannad makes me remember that most things we complain about our lives are just trivial and shouldn't worry us at all. It's amazing how an anime can have such a power to invoke emotions of the highest degree and change our perception of the world completely. And yes, I agree with you: Clannad couldn't have ended in any other way. It doesn't feel cheap at all since it's foreshadowed in both seasons and explained a lot. I myself wasn't a great fan of the first arcs of AS but after your explanation I'm rewatching them as well. At last, what hits me the most nowadays is Tomoya's relationship with his father. And that's not only because of the story behind, but because 12 years ago it made me realize how easily we can judge someone poorly and make up your mind in the worst possible way. I'm the kind of person to think I'm always right. Watching Clannad made me really despise Tomoya's father as weak and useless and then... Those dialogues with his grandmother... They just destroyed me completely. I had grown to almost hate a character for what was shown to me, but I didn't know many things that needed to be considered in order to really have such a strong opinion. That changed me in a way that still the same even today. Clannad, Tomoya, Nagisa and specially Akio were somehow responsible for a part of who I am today. And that's why years can keep passing and I will still love this anime and have it as #1 on my every list. Again: thank you so much for this video.

    I like how you said that life experiences may change your perception of this show and I feel like after going 10ish years without watching it I experienced something similar. I became an older sibling, I moved out in with someone I loved and have been with for a decade, and I matured a lot, and I can remember my take on the first time viewing and appreciate parts of the story I didn’t understand or couldn’t relate to but now do.

    This is probably one of the best videos I've ever seen in UA-cam. The thing you've done with the show's soundtrack is just perfect. Yeah, this anime changes lives for sure. For me, it's the best piece of media i'm sure i'll ever have the opportunity to experience. It touched me in ways no other movie, book, song, manga, anime or any other kind of media was ever able to do, and it is kinda harsh to try and watch any other anime after Clannad, because it just doesn't feel right. Fumihiko Shimo and Tatsuya Ishihara (writer and director of the anime) decided to do an absolutely realistic picture of characters, unlike many other anime series.
    So from the first moment you face into a constant evolution with them, in a day by day of traumas, fears, problems, overcoming, death, ethics, redemption, forgiveness, suffering, fatherhood, dreams and friendship and love beyond life and death.
    Inherited from the best classic japanese cinema, Clannad's emotions are not only sentimental but deep to the heart, guts and soul...

    I finally understand the cultural differences that kept me from understanding this anime when I watched it as a teenager. I had zero idea how Tomoya's father being in jail would affect his own employment prospects. I think I was so upset by it back then that I straight up stopped watching it for a year before finishing the series.
    Knowing now that it's just part of Japan's culture makes it a lot sadder, that they know that they themselves will be judged for the actions of someone else. It made me realize that Tomoya probably already knew that this was a possibility in the back of his mind.

But it hurt more knowing that there was no "happy ending" or mirical world where we'd end up together like they did because the only person I love wouldn't watch this show and think of me, because were not family anymore

    I know you said in the video at 5:48 you're not gonna talk about themes and tone, but think it would have been really cool if you talked about the themes, imagery, tone, symbolism etc in a more explicit way since you had several moments that touched on these topics but in a more meandering way, when (imo) if you had set out to explicitly address these topics you could have said what you did in a more concise way, but also opens up a deeper dialogue on each. You did a great job summarizing it with a sprinkling of analysis, but I think a deeper analysis with summarizing citations as needed would have been a better video. Just my 2 cents. It was still a nice video

    • @Totaraum
      @Totaraum  2 роки тому

      I totally get where you’re coming from. When I make a video about something I really care about I find that I tend to spend a lot of time trying to cover all my bases content-wise, leaving analysis as a lesser percentage of the video. I wouldn’t mind revisiting this season with the explicit purpose of exploring its themes and symbolism. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    • @aaaakun
      @aaaakun 2 роки тому

      @@Totaraum That makes sense, I can see why you would make that decision. From my point of view, most people that are going to stick around through the entire video are people that have already seen the anime or people that just want to know what the story is without having to sit through the entire anime or play the VN. If I am being completely honest, I think that due to its age, most people (that would watch this video) have already seen it and don't need such a detailed summary that wouldn't get covered by analysis. In my opinion, I wouldn't be looking for someone to just retell the story as it was, and if I was, I wouldn't want to listen to a 40 minute summary when I can find something that accomplishes the same in 10 minute or less, via another video or a written summary. In contrast, everyone's opinions and analysis on what the events, symbolism, et al, actually means are going to be unique and there is an endless amount of variety in interpretations.
      I don't know if this is optimal, but a possible structure for the video could have been spending the first 30%-50% of the video recapping the anime as it is a nice refresher for people that haven't seen it in awhile, and spending the remaining 50%-70% offering your analysis on the things we talked about above. In this way, you might be able to provide the summary as you did, but in a more concise way - this leaves more time for analysis. You are allowed to make your videos as long as you want, but realistically you're only going to hold people's attention spans for 20-45 minutes, probably a lot closer to 20 unless you can change up the pace to keep people interested about halfway through.
      I apologize if anything above came off as rude - it was not my intent. Hopefully something gives you a good idea and you will be able to push something out that you spent more time thinking about than I did writing the above. I rarely leave such long-winded and well-thought out responses but given the nature of the discussion I think you are well deserving of it.

    • @Totaraum
      @Totaraum  2 роки тому

      @@aaaakun Watching back chunks of this video, I agree. There's too much summary with little substance attached to it. I've made one other video in a similar vein to this one about the disappearance of haruhi suzumiya, and I think I subconsciously learned a lot from this video. I like going through a special piece of work scene by scene because I enjoy taking the viewer through the same journey I went through. While this makes it very summary heavy, I think there are ways to weave substance into it. Watching back the disappearance video, I noticed I would weave jokes, personal stories, outside information, or analysis through almost every instance of summary to make the end product as uniquely mine as it can be. It's really helpful revisiting these two videos today, since I'm currently writing for a clannad visual novel video in the same style as these two.
      I've never tried to split summary and analysis up like that before, I'll give it a whirl if I see a good opportunity to do so! Also I wish I was guaranteed to hold people's attention for at least 20 minutes lmao. I didn't for a second think you were being rude, it's clear that you put a lot of thought into your critique and thank you for doing so! It's given me a lot to think about. Honestly Clannad After Story and Toradora have some of the best fights in anime. The fights in both aren't amazing spectacles, but the emotions behind them made them amazing to experience.

    I didn't watch clannad until I was an adult, but the show hit me from so many different angles. And I admit, when I started watching I was put off by the old art style and other unimportant details. But the fuko arc fully sold me and I binged the rest.

      Glad to hear it! The art style is a little odd when you see it for the first time, but I found that it’s super easy to get used to

    14 times ... 14 times I've watched Clannad i watched this show at the best moment imo to ever see such a tale in 2015 when i was a senior in high school and i didn't know what to do with myself I will always insert myself with tomoya because of the way my life was when i watched it the first time and ofc ive growned since then but i look at my past as a starting point to my future which is why clannad will always be the best anime ive ever watched
    your video of clannad has been by far the best representation of this show ive seen so far in a review maybe because it was longer than most which is fine shows that you care about it enough to do a deep dive
    im a critic at heart and i recognize you said that you only had a limited amount of time to bring up the motifs of the show fair enough but for me i feel people should consider the town inherently as a character that is worth mentioning and dissecting because it sets the stage in which this masterpiece can ever occur in
    take pride in this video its excellent and starting the video off with to the same heights as an ost is what kept me intrigued because thats my favorite ost youve earned the fuck out of my subscription

    • @Totaraum
      @Totaraum  2 роки тому

      Thanks so much! This comment really made my day. I agree, the town is just as important to the story as any of the characters, and it deserves a lot of time and respect. I'll make sure it gets it when I cover the visual novel

    It's been 9 years since I watched Clannad After Story.
    I stopped reminiscing about having watched it, I haven't rewatched it once (mostly fearing the initial sentiment would wear off from repeted experiencing), but as soon as I get reminded of it I still claim it's the best I've ever seen even if I scroll through the list of everything I've watched. No sentiment about this show has changed for me. Once again, 9 years on, and it's even embarrassing to tell how many times I cried watching this video.

    I remember I first heard of Clannad from my older sister back when I was around ten or so. She hated me back then and hated when I wanted to watch things she liked so I watched Clannad by myself. I didn’t know that Clannad had two seasons technically so I actually watched After Story first. I was confused for the first few episodes but just went along with it. Though I don’t remember connecting to much to the story at that time, I rewatched it at some point later in my life between middle school and freshmen year. Only then did I watch both seasons correctly and boy did everything click into place for me. Now that I’ve graduated Highschool and I’ve putting off doing adult things, Tomoya has become even more relatable. I already found Tomoya relatable because of his apathetic nature but as I get older I find I have more in common with him. I come back to this anime whenever I’m in a depressive state and it’s incredibly therapeutic to cry my eyes out to this show. This, Angel Beats and more recently Violet Evergarden will always and forever be my comfort and go to anime’s. Thank you Kyoto Animations❤️.
